Not a lot to say about this shot, it was an impulsive one. Walking up the path above Bachalpsee I stopped and turned around, and loved how the light was falling across the lake.

This was the location I most wanted to shoot while in Switzerland, and luckily I got the chance twice. This is the very first shot I took upon arriving at the lake, having had something like it in my head for quite some time. This is one of only a very few shots of mine that were pre-planned

Once I arrived I looked around for a while to find the best angle, and this rock presented itself as some nice foreground interest. I spent another couple of minutes lining up the shot, positioning my tripod exactly where I wanted, then removed my camera and used it to meter the foreground and background separately. The difference was roughly two stops, so I put the camera back on my tripod and lined up a grad ND4 with the horizon. I then removed the entire filter holder, screwed in my ND400 and reattached the grad filter in its holder. I didn't use a polariser in this case because of the angle to the sun, almost straight on, and because I wanted to preserve the reflection on the water.
It was then a simple matter of stopping down to get the exposure length I wanted and taking the shot.

Post processing was light; I removed the slight colour cast the ND400 tends to give, bumped the contrast a tiny bit with curves, then my standard resizing, sharpening and titling for the web. ]]>

When we were in Switzerland on holidays she said to me: "I would love it if you could make something 'the way you do' with the pictures from the holidays." and I said "sure" and was planning on doing it right when we got back. But you know the way inspiration comes and goes on its own terms, so it got finished in early December instead.

I've come to realize that with my own photos, I need to get some distance from the actual picture taking before I can manipulate them into something new - if I try right away I always think "but it was beautiful the way it was" and nothing seems to do it justice

Some technical stuff at last: as I said above, the original is 60x25cm at 300dpi and I used pictures taken by myself during the holidays in Switzerland in September (including the marmot - it was the only one I even saw because they were shy... hunting season will do that) - the only pics not taken in Switzerland are the clouds (they're from around here) as it just was not cloudy in the least hehe. You may even recognize one part or other from my gallery

My second visit to Bachalpsee. Since I had no clear ideas in my head about what to shoot, I just wandered around waiting for inspiration to strike. I found this patch of flowers growing in a relatively calm inlet of the upper lake - Bachalpsee has two parts, a large upper lake about 10m above the smaller lower lake, separated by a natural dam.
Again no polariser was used in order to preserve the reflection, and in setting up the shot I followed the same routine as for Switzerland IV; metering foreground and sky, aligning the grad filter (ND4 in this case), removing the filter in its holder, screwing in the ND400 and finally replacing the filter and holder. I like the movement of the clouds in this shot, and almost wish I had used a longer exposure.
The shallow water to the right of the flowers was absolutely teeming with small fish, that all shot away as I approached...

The most time consuming part of processing this shot was removing the two people standing on the hill to the right. The lake was fairly busy, and I decided that two people were easier to remove from the shot than the coach load of Japanese tourists that would surely have replaced them!
After that it was a simple process to remove the colour cast from the ND400, resize, sharpen and title for submission. ]]>

I went to.. eeh.. brunnen, glacier 3000 [link] and genf (and the picture there is brunnen, i dont have any idea what's the name of the place, but i'm pretty sure it's in front of somekind of a chapel -shot- [link]
so anyway..

I realized they speak english very well, i still heard some french-german-italian accent, but i could say so far they're the best english speaker compared to the other countries I've had visit

things in switzerland are.. pretty expensive -U-;; but it's not THAT expensive -u-;;

the people are very organized, just like the germans, but if someone's late or being a trouble maker, they could get angry easily -u-;; ....ok, maybe not angry, but pissed. and when they pissed.. it's the best not to talk to them for a while ;;

it's pretty... weird to see snow for the first time -u-; *we dont have 4 seasons in indonesia* especially in summer.

It probably wasn't the best time to go as the wind was very strong, and was at least -11, so my camera, lens, and tripod kept getting covered in ice, making taking photos hard as it was almost impossible to keep the front of the lens clear.

By the end my bag was coated in ice which I couldn't get open for about an hour, and the back of my jacket and trousers were frozen solid, but I came out with a few decent shots. Hopefully I'll be going back in a few days when the wind dies down. ]]>
