Some night ago I was working with the TV on the background. I catch this film on Netflix, The Secret of NIMH. It was one of my favorite movies when i was a kid. I remember the awesome animation, the fantastic work in backgrounds and the nice characters, Don Bluth is a genius and one of my heroes. I remember to spent a lot of time as a kid with the VHS watching this movies and drawing. I love the dark tone of 80´s films for kids.

Oh, well, I cant avoid do a quick 5 minutes sketch of the lovely Mrs Brisby. I hope to do a full color image of this sometime

This is the first completed PRE-commission ordered for HEROES con. I make no secret that one of the MAIN inspirations for my current comic, The Wellkeeper, is the classic animated film, "The Secret of NIMH". This is one of my single favorite films period, and this is the first time in my adult life that I've tried drawing anything from... it.

One of the nicest parts of taking commissions BEFORE the show is that I can actually scan them in for myself.

This is my cover illustration for the book "Mrs. Frisby & the Rats of NIMH." I'm sure that many of you remember the Don Bluth animated film with the title "The Secret of NIMH." Ever wonder what NIMH was? Read the book, it rocks and then you'll know. This scene depicts the clever lab-tested and super-genius rats discovering how to unlock their cages and escape to freedom. I used the Mahurin Technique on this piece. The continuous layers of oil glazes, oil washes, and crystal clear. All of these elements are toxic, especially when used indoors. Living dangerously! I used a bit of Sharpie permanent marker in some places to get distinct lines and shapes, but the majority of this piece is all oil glazes. Wipe out those glazes for the lights, and leave it in for the darks. Gives it a nice, dark moody feeling. For the fur texture, I went in with a tiny brush and painted individual strokes of the hair with light oil glazes.

Children of NIMH Dragon Slayer

Here is another random picked scene from Children of NIMH. Teresa appears to still be controlled by something uknown as her powers seem to grow. She acts on her own. Martin with his Mother track down Teresa in a burning field fighting Dragon, the Farmer Fitzgibbon's cat. From what Martin has realized, Teresa appears to battle Dragon in attempts to avenge her Father, Johnathan.

It is then later realized Teresa can start fires at will! (I've been watching too much Witch Hunter Robin) Dragon appears to have the upper hand, but our Firestarter has him right where she wants him.

My Brother decided to have Teresa as the main focus of the Children of NIMH story. According to the original book, Teresa is the first born and Timothy the last child. Also he based this fact on the animated movie of Teresa's greater resemblence to Johnathan.

This time I did the cels and background. I was doing a study on anime fires and I got this. Again I had to tone down Teresa's look. I took out the pulsating viens and oozing blood. If you would also note, the cels are done according to the animated movie and does not use anime cel shading.

Cougari in NIMH

Over the past week I've been rolling the idea of Cougari as a character in the Secret of NIMH. Those who don't know me well should know that The Secret of NIMH made me look at animation totally differently. The Effects, the story, the characters, all of them were present for this. I downloaded the score from iTunes and am just enamored with this film.

Jennifer Brisby of N.I.M.H.

I had originally intended to redesign young Timothy Brisby as he appeared in the second Secret of N.I.M.H. movie, but after Googling for screen captures from the aforementioned animated feature for reference and subsequently coming across several pictures and fan videos in which Timothy and Jennifer were frequently depicted standing side by side, it suddenly dawned on me that both of their character designs - save for wardrobe, gender, eye colour and hair length - were precisely, utterly, wholly and completely one-hundred-and-one percent identical to one another, right down to the the shade of their pelts!

Upon further examination, I had also come to the realization that even their personalities mimicked each other. As is turns out, they were both cheeky, adventuresome, dare-devilish, and somewhat sarcastic. Even their nicknames for pities sake (Jenny and Timmy) closely matched!

Deciding that enough was enough, I made the decision that it was Jenny and not Timothy who needed that makeover more urgently. The first problem which I felt needed to be addressed was the pelt dilemma; in terms colouration, the only difference between Jenny and her male carbon copy counterpart is the fact that she is only a few barely noticeable shades lighter. Her new spots and icy-blue irises ought to aid in the clearing up process of all this colour confusion!

One other fact which has never ceased to gnaw away at the roots of mind like a teeny neurological Níðhöggr is the issue of personality. Timothy was a young field mouse who was coddled by his mother Mrs. Brisby during the first half of his life and groomed to be a prophesied future legend and hero by the rats of N.I.M.H during the second half of his life. In all likelihood, it is entirely possible that by far the most stressful situation Timmy has ever been exposed to was the threat of being grounded by Mr. Ages for failing to complete a certain chore. Despite all this, he actually appears to be the more timid character in the JennyXTimmy relationship for no logical reason.

Jennifer was one of the children of the lost mice of N.I.M.H, and was no doubt subjected to inhumane treatment and cramped living quarters as well as painful scientific experimentation (such as the shots and electrically wired rat mazes which Nicodemus describes to the widowed Mrs. Brisby in the original book) every other day of her life. Also The Secret of N.I.M.H 2's Dr. Valentine seemed significantly nuttier than the original Dr. Schultz who at least was a traditionally minded scientist who found no particular enjoyment in causing his lab animals physical pain, unlike his replacement who seemed to be playing god while also allowing N.I.M.H. to fall into filth and disrepair, making me wonder precisely how much worse his treatment of Jenny and the other mice would've been when compared with the treatment which Nicodemus' group received during their imprisonment there. All of these facts makes it much too difficult for me to believe that they would have identical temperaments given their vastly different upbringings.

Where the traditional Jenny was brazen, assertive, and self-confident, my remastered Jenny is hesitant, cautious, and understandably prone to worry and anxiety as a result of her past experiences at N.I.M.H.

The Children of NIMH - The One

This is a colaboration with my Brother. This is his idea of a Secret of NIMH sequel. That Timmy to the Rescue sequel was just a travesty. He also is a fan of Ken Singshow's Unofficial Sequel to Secret of NIHM which can be found on the web.

Here Timothy is defending his Mother against his sibligs (Teresa, Cynthia, & Martin) which the NIMH DNA mutagen has reawaken very terrible powers. Mrs. Brisby is in constant attack by their psychic force! Some other force is making his siblings act violently without being aware of what they're doing. For now only Timothy is in control as he tries to save his Mother and hopefully bring his siblings to their senses.

My Brother did the initial background. I'm amazed of how he did it. That cel drawn drape doorway really made it look official. And some inspirations from other DeviantARTists, I did the WIDESCREEN format!

Please note this was pretty much a dark themed pic, but I decided to make it not so dark. There was supposed to be blood and pulsating veins on the children! My Brother said it was okay to tone it done to this. I just hope my Brother does not submit the proposed following scenes because it is very graphic and mature contact galore!

Another Illustration assignment. I chose to do an illustration for Robert C. O'Brien's Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH because I've always loved that book and movie since I was a kid. The movie has hardly anything to do with the book, but both have their nice moments.

So. For those of you who are familiar with the story, this is Jeremy taking Mrs. Frisby to see the Great Owl at sunset. And that's the garden patch with the stone in it down there.

The Children of NIMH - Say my name again...

Sort of what I really wanted to see from the NIMH storyline: the love between Jonathan and his wife as newly weds Mr. and Mrs. Brisby. In honor of Elizabeth Hartman, the original voice of Mrs. Brisby, and like many fans who agree as well, I have chosen the name Elizabeth as her name. A name given to her by her husband Jonathan. As picture here, Brisby loves her new name. Especially how Jonathan says it... before/during/and after their love making!

The wheat grass was added for that "after sex" cigarette. I had to change the design of the grass a few times because it looked like they were smoking weed at some point.

Well, never mind that. I'm rarely at a real farm to know real wheat. Well, thanks for looking.

Children of NIMH - Awakening the Stone

WARNING!! NUDITY!! IMPLIED MATURE THEMES!!

Nicodemus: "Courage of the heart is very rare... the stone has a power when it's there."

This is part of me and my sister's colab on a Secret of NIMH sequel "The Children of NIMH" The story of the Brisby children having paranormal kenetic powers because of their mutant DNA inherited from their Father Johnathan. This is an old cel I used to recreate this scene.

Here is a memory/flashback that Mrs. Brisby begins to remember when Cynthia heals her after the eldest sister Teresa dissappeared. Timothy, Martin, and Jeremy the Crow has long since searching for her. Mrs. Brisby is horrified and sickened of what Nicodemus has done to her. Nicodemus has erased this assualt from Mrs. Brisby mind. In truth it was to awaken the Stone which is infact a vessel of Johnathan's mutated blood. This assault on Brisby has caused the "rage" within the Blood Stone to awaken. In turn help protect the Brisby home later on in the actual movie. More secrets of NIMH will be revealed as Teresa finds her way back to the Institute, leaving a trail of death behind her.

Again most of my early work are basically the same, same poses, so don't expect much. At least I'm trying to be as good as my sister, subject wise and creativity that is.

Here's some artworks for school!
One of my courses involved an assignment in which we needed to produce 6 artworks adapting scenes from a novel, movie, etc, etc. I debated for a long time doing something nerdier (Majora's Mask would've been so much fun *A*) but in the end I decided to do something a bit more, err.... academically friendly? Just in case.

"Mrs Frisby and the Rats of NIMH" by Robert O’Brien was a childhood favourite of mine, so I went with that~ I remember disliking the movie adaptation with as a kid because they completely altered my favourite character (Nicodemus - the one with the eyepatch) into a more Flanderized version of himself that really upset me. Haha... XD
I haven't watched the movie since then and not objectively as a feat of animation as opposed to a book adaptation, so it's probably a crap-tonne better than I remember it, though.

Haha... Anyway, here's the book excerpts I printed out to go with the individual A3 prints for the final assessment:

“The Sickness of Timothy Frisby”

Mrs Frisby, the head of a family of field mice, lived in an underground house in the vegetable garden of a farmer…

Although she was a widow …. Mrs Frisby was able, through luck and hard work, to keep her family – there were four children – happy and well fed.

Then, one day at the very end of February, Mrs Frisby’s younger son, Timothy, fell sick.

“The Crow and the Cat”

She looked down at the fence and saw it was no hen at all, but a young crow, flapping in the grass, acting most oddly … Then he spread his wings, flapped hard and took off – but after flying four feet he stopped with a snap and crashed to the ground again …

… He was tied to the fence. A piece of something silvery – it looked like wire – was tangled around one of his legs; the other end was caught on the fence. Mrs Frisby walked closer, and then she could see it was not wire at all, but a length of silver-coloured string ….

…

He looked embarrassed and stared at his feet, “I picked up the string. It got tangled with my foot” …

“Why did you pick up the string?”

The crow, who was very young indeed … said wearily “Because it was shiny.”

…Birdbrain, though Mrs Firsby, and then recalled what her husband used to say: The size of the brain is no measure of its capacity. And well she might recall it, for the crow’s head was double the size of her own.

“Come down here,” she said, “I’ll get the string off.”

“Go to the Rats”

Mrs Frisby hesitated. She knew something of the dietary habits of owls…

The chamber into which she stepped was spacious ... At the back the walls narrowed into a corner, and there she saw that the owl had built himself a nest….

She stopped and faced the owl … who was peering at her with his great yellow eyes …

“Now,” said the owl, “you may state your problem”.

“A Lesson in Reading”

For the first time they used sounds along with shapes, and pictures, real pictures we could recognise. For example, one of the first and simplest of these exercises was a picture, a clear photograph, of a rat. I suppose they felt sure we would know what it was. This picture was shown on a screen, with a light behind it. Then, after I had looked at the picture and recognised it, a shape flashed on the screen under it – a sort of half circle and two straight lines ….
The voice began:
“Are.”
“Are.”
“Are.”

…That particular shape disappeared and another one came on the screen… It was a triangle, with legs on it…

“Aiee.”
“Aiee.”
“Aiee.”

When that shaped disappeared a third one came on the screen. This one was a cross.
…
“Tea.”
“Tea.”
“Tea.”

Then all three shapes appeared at once, and the record said:

“Are.”
“Aiee.”
“Tea.”
“Rat.”

“Captured”

The cat: He was called Dragon. Farmer Fitzgibbon’s wife had given him the name as a joke… But when he grew up, the name turned out to be an apt one. He was enormous, with a huge, broad head full of curving fangs, needle sharp… with glaring yellow eyes; and when he leapt to kill, he gave a high, strangled scream that froze his victims where they stood.

“Epilogue”

So on a day in May as warm as summer, early in the morning, Mrs Frisby and her children… walked to their summer house, taking half a day to do it, strolling slowly and enjoying the fine weather …

As they approached the brook, towards the big tree in the hollow of whose roots they would make their summer home, the children ran ahead, shouting and lighting. Timothy ran with them, and Mrs Frisby was glad to see her showed no trace of his sickness

…

“Children, I have a story to tell you. A long one…. About your father, and about the Rats.”

….

The sun had set. They went into the house and lay down…. Outside, the brook swam quietly through the woods, and up above them the warm wind blew through the newly opened leaves of the big oak tree. They went to sleep.

If this didn't sit around on my computer for two weeks ... it would have been done two weeks sooner. Once again, I was pulled into the vortex of a black background. I swear I'll never learn. Appreciate me, I just pulled a 3-hour shift finishing this one off.

And for the record, The Secret of NIMH 2 was my favorite movie ever when I was younger. I wasn't able to rewatch the movie while I was working on this (so I'm not even sure if I got the characters right. Eep! ), but I know I've seen it over 5 times.

Mrs Brisby of the Secret of NIMH sculpture I made for a friend for Christmas 2007.

The figure is made from "Transparent" Sculpey which was then painted with acrylic paints. The "Stone" is made from a round Mozaic stone I painted the back and side gold and it is hung from metalic gold thread.

You can see more photos of the creation of this in my "scraps" along with comments of how I made her.

Finally finished this, the hardest part being the background fitted for this. Got it from google.

Tis my little tribute for the first and yet best movie Don Bluth ever created.

And to why I humanized the main heroine Mrs. Brisby is because humanization is one of my many perks in fanart. Though I kinda modeled her after her voice actress, who's just as timid and meek.

Hope you enjoy, it took me around a whole month to get it finished.

I'd watched the old cartoon movie "The Secret of NIMH" since many people are talking about it. It was great movie, has lovely and touching feelings, good music, and a fantasy touch and others that is too hard or too long to explain, it is so great that I have to watch it twice to ease my addiction! Since her have no official first name, some fans call Mrs. Brisby "Elizabeth" after her late voice actress. She is so brave and strong as well cute and loving for a mother.

Now that I have become a Secret of NIMH fan, my first thing is draw Mr. Jonathan Brisby and Mrs. Brisby.
I uses Mrs. Brisby's facial fur structure onto my drawing style to be certain that she is her, it took my a while. I gave her clothes other than her cloak, like I did to all my drawn Redwall characters, just to show some modesty.
Mice and Rats in the movie said that Jonathan was their greatest hero who freed them in the end of their escape from the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), so since there is a sword fight in the movie NIMH, I gave Jonathan a sword and armor.
And there I have them, and I changed the background's color show its an old cartoon. I think I'll draw more of NIMH as well as Redwall characters and perhaps together; its fun.

I wish there is of more of NIMH and Redwall. And I also wish there are more cartoons like NIMH have hand-drawn parts and not entirely computerized like now. *Sigh*

It's been so many years since I've watched this movie, I hardly remember anything about it... All I can recall was that Dom De Luise played the crow. And I can slightly remember the sequel better *gets bricked* I guess I'm going to have to pull out the VHS... or buy the dvd XD

1152x864 Anthro-fanart of one of my favorite movies of all time. The Secret of NIMH was released in 1982 by Don Bluth, and I remember reading it as a kid so I rushed out and saw it. I did some sketches of Mrs. Brisby, the mousey heroine of the Secret of NIMH and mostly forgot them until three years ago when a girlfriend I had wanted a NIMH wallpaper for her machine and this is the one I had done. The projection is from "Flight to Thorn Valley" a sequel, that never got off the ground.

Children of NIMH - Rage of the Stone

CENSORED VERSION

Nicodemus: "Courage of the heart is very rare... the stone has a power when it's there."

This is a much more intimate scene from fan sequel by me and my sister called the Secret of NIMH "The Children of NIMH" The story of the Brisby children having paranormal kenetic powers because of their mutant DNA inherited from their Father Johnathan.

Again Mrs Brisby remembers flashback with the help of Timoty of what more happened in the past when she was introduced to Nicodemus. After reading the book, Nicodemus mind controls Brisby to be submissive to him.

After the lengthy assault, Nicodemus has erased this rape from Mrs. Brisby mind. In truth it was to awaken the Stone. The Stone is not a jewel at all. It is in fact a vessel of Johnathan's mutated blood, extracted by the Rats after Johnathan's death! With the "rage" within the Blood Stone to awaken in turn help protect the Brisby home later on in the actual movie.

However, it did more than awaken the Stone's power, as the children have been awaken to very dangerous supernatural powers from their inherited genes. Nicodemus succeeded as he feels Johnathan's anger within the stone. However, given his own human-like desires from the injections, his own animal lusts took over within him. He ravaged Brisby, ejaculating over and over. Despite still being in a submissive state, he actually mind forced her to enjoy it. Finally regaining his senses, he releases his crime outweighed the outcome to save her and her children. Saddened that he betrayed his friend further despite it was to save his widow and children. He continued with the session and erased her mind.

Okay, I'm sorry for all those Nicodemus fan's that I seem to make him demonic. I'm just fleshing out the character in certain ways that indicate not all is all good within the ranks of the Rats. Also, I changed the Nicodemus's cum load from the usual white to a more blackish ooze. This is illustrate Nicodemus's own unique mutations to the injections with adverse effects to his physical being.

The Secret of NIMH Great Owl ATC

This is an Art Trading Card/ATC Trade request with *MansonHeartagram. We went with the theme of Don Bluth films, so I ended up creating this bit of fan art of Mrs. Brisby when she meets the Great Owl from The Secret of NIMH. This measures just 2.5x3.5 inches. Colored with a mix of Prismacolor markers and pencils on some laser printer paper.

The Secret of NIMH was 1982 film by renowned animator Don Bluth, and his first film after leaving the Walt Disney Company. It's based upon the 1971 Children's Novel, 'Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH.' Don Bluth set out with the explicit goal in mind of returning feature animation to its 'golden era', concentrating on strong characters and story, and experimenting with unusual and often more labor-intensive animation techniques, despite his very limited budget. Don Bluth Productions was initially based out of Bluth's own house and garage. The film is credited with helping to kick off what would become known as 'The Renaissance Age of Animation'.

Darkened the panels to make sure you could see him. He was originally drawn smaller, but he was completely covered up and looked tiny compared to the pillar of rock I used in the screencap I used. I also kinda had to improvise with the colors again, but I hope it's kinda there... still, god bless color picker button on Flash.

And that wraps up Secret of NIMH. I've heard the fandom for the original film is relatively tame, but then again, I've heard a lot of funny stories about the MUCK. :V

Sigh... I miss role-playing as Justin on myspace, lol. Good times. I wish there was a casual forum where I can be him again.
