Wow- I'm finally getting caught up on notes, thank-yous, checking out art etc. on DA.
Really going at it finding people- or trying to!- on Facebook.
Keeping the blog up.
Updating my photo galleries on my web site.
Going full bore on scanning REALLY old family photos and sorting out the vast collection of negatives from a lifetime of photography.
Cleaning up the accumulated stuff one collects over the years to give to thriftstore/yardsale- still have to fix up my Craigslisting and Kijii accounts for this.
Trying to draw more, paint more, and establish myself on different sites; Redbubble for instance.

All in all this was a good year and I have a lot to be thankful for. I hope everyone is having a great time finishing off 2009!

Well I guess this business with my eyes is related to the weather. Seems skin condition worsens in the cold months. I won't complain about this again because I can actually treat it- and I'm not blind yet thank God.
Been drawing a lot the last little while and taking the odd photos...just finished reinstalling my entire operating system due to having a virus in my e-mail program.
Now some people will say in a whiny voice: "You should find the root of the problem rather than reinstall" often forgetting ( or ignoring ) the fact that reformatting a hard drive and reinstalling the O.S. cleans out the entire system. It's lots of work backing stuff up and then putting all the programs and hardware back in but I'm rather well experienced with that and the only thing I forgot to do was back up a week of calender dates- not that there was tons to say!

I might/most likely have a job starting next week- I will wait a bit before commenting further on that. Hope folks are doing well.

On Saturday my eyes felt strange in the evening- like sleep clogged but worse- like lumpy...I had to go to bed early.
Sunday evening I felt a pain in the right eye and found that the skin was cracked in the right corner.
Tonight the same thing is starting to happen in the eye lid of the left eye.

I'm too pissed off to really cry about this. I think I will have to see a skin specialist soon- I can't have this psoriasis/eczema shit blinding me...I had just got on top of the usual break out spots with an herbal remedy but dealing with the eyes is a different matter. I suppose I will treat it like I treat the rest till I find a doctor. Utter bullshit. I apologize for venting but I really need to vent about this.
A year or two ago I was conversing with someone else who has the condition on his eyes...I was so glad that that wasn't where I had skin issues.

Idon't even know why such a thing must exist in this day and age...but that comedian on t.v. today said something ironic: the company that makes the delicious chocolate cakes that he is addicted to is owned by the same parent company that owns the pharmaceutical company that manufactures his diabetes medicine. The medication for his sugar issues is owned by the same people whose product contributes to his sugar issues. ha ha. not funny at all.

It was such a bother having 3 sites in an attempt to focus on specialties and not appear cluttered but I think it's better now.
Simple links to all the things I do: photography, traditional art, digital art, photo manips, tutorials etc. Out on the internet there is so much room to put all your stuff- unlike the real world where my identity of Artemis Graphics And Design has now been usurped by my photography identity.
I've just done up new business cards based on the same design I made up for my magnetic car sign...focusing on local subject matters for the most part yet open to all types of photography.
I'm drawing a bit more again and trying the water colour again on the side...I might actually post that painting of Damar ( Star Trek character ) if it turns out reasonably well- lol. We shall see- water colour and me are not good friends.
There will be a community art show in a few months so I want to have something ready for it- traditional art. Maybe I'll startle people by submitting alien portraits!

Anyways, fall is beautiful out here even if there are not red maple trees and I better get started on selecting some pictures to post. Hope everyone is having a good ( long ) weekend.

]]> *12monthsOFwinter Default friending is not cool http://12monthsOFwinter.deviantart.com/journal/27367490/ http://12monthsOFwinter.deviantart.com/journal/27367490/ Tue, 22 Sep 2009 23:55:22 PDT I've said it before and I will say it again: IT IS NOT COOL FOR DA TO AUTOMATICALLY "FRIEND" EVERY PERSON YOU CHOOSE TO "WATCH".
Why even put check boxes there when they try to force the decision on you in the first place. I don't know how many times I've had to clear checks off the list because changes didn't stick and now almost every category is checked by default except for scraps.

I 'watch' just under a hundred people and I don't appreciate this system at all.
Some people I have been friends with for a few years and I (want to ) watch their artwork ( deviations ) and journals- I would even watch their scraps but the decisions I make in those check boxes don't always stick so the less I watch the better.

Other people I only want to see their artwork- nothing more and still other people aren't artists but they have interesting journals and that's what I would like to read.

And NO, I don't want to see ANYONE'S critique of another's work. That's checked by default too. The way it works it seems as if DA has been trying to force the world into accepting an automatic 'friending' as perfectly acceptable social networking. They could learn a lesson from Facebook which takes the opposite approach. This is one of the reasons why I loose track of people because I have to unclear all the boxes in frustration that got checked when I hit the 'watch' button which to me still means I want to watch this person by the most obvious means- via their artwork and not from all the other stuff that clutters up the inbox.
It annoys me coming to this site.

The fall fair in Merritt has come and gone and the photographs I put in got quite a few ribbons. Needless to say I'm pretty happy with that!

We also had a rodeo on the same weekend which was exciting as usual- I will have to post some photos once I get them sorted out...
I have my main site which contains photos I'm marketing as stock as well as local events photography...then I have my art based site which contains tutorials as well as showcased personal favorite of mine...then the new site which is supposed to archive my film based photography and market myself as a photographer but it's getting to be too much.
I simply have to streamline the packaging of the content because it's becoming too massive and the web host for the images doesn't let you change names so...blah blah blah boring you!

Anyways, here it is Artemis Graphics And Design in it's bare-bones format.

I've shut off all art that I watch because Devs aren't updating correctly and they're all mixed up which I hate having to deal with...just staying on top of thank you's takes a lot of time and I don't want to be in a frazzled mood when I look thru people's galleries which I will do when I've got proper time.
I've also got something wrong with this computer- I swear, hackers should be rounded up, have all their clothes ripped off, and thrown on the shores of a mosquito infested lake.

June 15th: well I did what I don't normally do which is chuck all the journal messages that have accumulated in the past month...I will still go thru the arts however.
My hubby was in 2 different hospitals over the past 5 days with a nosebleed that lasted over a hundred hours- horrible. Finally a specialist cauterized the blood vessel and removed some bone splinters from an old accident which is probably what contributed to the non-stop gushing.

I've revamped my photography web site and have some issues to deal with locally - hope everyone is enjoying this start to summer.

I was going to write an update but I happen to have seen a picture on the front of DA that caught my eye- a painting of two prostitutes - the type of subject matter that was popular with the impressionist 100 years ago- I really thought the artist was revisiting that genre until I read the description of the piece and then went to his page.
The prostitutes and the last picture he submitted- child prostitutes - are illustrations for a book called Erotica.
That last picture has received nearly 1500 favs or collects in just over half a day of it's existence on this site.
There is no way the administrators of this site could be unaware of this- I really hope the decision makers are on holiday and that's why it's still up because that picture should not be on this site.
Not only does it violate what is considered as acceptable for art on this site it is admittedly for a book called Erotica.
That should tell people something yet of course there are countless idiots defending this piece of child porn.
I will spell it out to these idiots: the artist thinks it's acceptable to market images of naked child prostitutes for erotica- the artist has gone so far as to offer the image as a print for sale.
I've put up with a lot of personally distasteful stuff on this site- things that are twisted and perverted- because I believe in freedom of expression but that expression has moral and ethical limits.

Edit: I also want to add ( for the sake of the simple-minded ) that child prostitutes lives are already so entirely devoid of dignity and decency that even photographic documentation of their lives is a questionable matter and most people understand that depicting them naked or in a near naked state is COMPLETELY UNNECESSARY . All it does is further degrade them for the so-called sake of 'art' which this most obviously is not- anyone who buys prints of such work is condoning pedophilia.

I don't want to associate myself with a site that can't comprehend the most obvious violations even when it's spelled out in black and white nor a site that can't adhere to it's own written standards:

I've started on John Locke ( I'm on my second attempt actually ) and it looking promising. A few weeks ago I did studies for Sahid but they weren't going anywhere so I stuck with Star Trek till the Du-cut incident.
2 days ago I went to visit my sis and watch a tattoo artist emblazon a large and beautifully rendered portrait on her shoulder. I will post pictures of this soon- I had always been very curious about how tattoos were done so this was quite an interesting experience for me.
My sister is quite the tough customer I have to say- she sat for over 3 hours while that needle filled gun poked inky holes in her skin.
That's about it for now but I would like to mention that some of my work is being featured in the journal of BrigetteMora ( ) The reason for the feature can be found at her FAQ page and my own specific interest is in helping out Sara Baker.

Well it finally happened. I deleted a folder that I shouldn't have- permanently. Must have happened about 2 days ago when I started to file 3 months worth of digital photos. Theres a lesson in this kiddys: don't bite off more than you can chew in one night.
I must have been tired and dumped the category folder for the Olympus camera that held all my recent trip photos from April- all the homes we looked at in Vernon, Salmon Arm, Armstrong, and of course, Merritt.
I haven't checked the equivalent Sony folder properly yet to see what else might have been lost- that's the scary thing. Maybe animal pictures and scenics as well. Poop.
The one saving grace is that I had a few of our new house photos embedded in a Corel file because we were planning our landscaping ideas in it.
Last Friday I also lost a sketchbook somewhere in Langley. Theres a very remote possibility that it's in this house somewhere but since I've packed up 3/4ths of our things and it hasn't turned up yet its becoming less likely...'Tiger Pencils' was in that one among a few others that fortunately I did scan a few months ago.
Another frustrating thing is DA- about a quarter of the pictures in any given gallery don't show up- either my own, people's pictures on my watch list, favorites, etc. Highly annoying.
Not much else to say as I'm in a 'hurry up and wait' mode- have to learn not to do that when it comes to file management- and not be so lazy and burn my files to disc again.

Ya, it's official. We are now homeowners! I'm having wine in 2 minutes!
Down payment is in, subjects removed and theres no turning back!!! Of course, sitting at home all day, it was just me acting like a maniac as I hit the 'send' button which hurtled the final pdf file down the digital highway of mail servers and then almost chewing my nails for the next 4 hours hoping no one else would freakishly come up with a new offer. But it's all good now.

We can finally arrange to move, dig up the plants I want to keep, maybe have a garage sale, get our new address officialized, etc. I never said this before but the whole process was interesting in that I must have wanted this more than anything else (I knew I did) but I wasn't expecting to loose weight and have my psoriasis practically vanish...15 pounds lighter out of sheer happiness and clear skin. wow.
I won't bore anyone any longer

In other news: I'm resubmitting all my old patterns. Ya- I'm nuts in a way. I like making them and I really regretted having taken them down but I needed time to assess the worthiness of leaving them up for thieves. But I would rather loads of people paint with them, make whatever project turns their crank- whatever- instead of worrying about every ass-hat out there who steals because he or she isn't civilized enough to ask permission. (their time will come in the end :lol)

I've thought a lot about the proposed/pending Orphan Works legislation and am in the middle of writing an editorial about it. I'm torn on what I see as ominous implications and at the same time an expansion of artistic freedom when this comes to pass. And it will come to pass- because thats the American way.
Sorry, theres no way around it- America is well known as a capable bully within its own borders as well as overseas. I do not say this as a criticism of American's themselves- simply pointing out that the systems that are regularly employed to gain an advantageous position in technology, entertainment, and financial gains, inevitably move swiftly to push out or aside the little guys.
You see this very clearly with the development of software and bio-technology for example, or the exporting of licensed television and video products, and of course the IRS! It's very fortunate that the protection of artistic and literary works were internationally formalized via the Bern Convention which essentially forced the U.S.A. to get in line with the rest of the world on this matter. Nowadays it's how well and how swiftly people react and/or adapt to new rules which will determine if we can be happy with them or not.

Regarding the Orphan Works Legislation

There is a lot of information out there about this subject. Essentially that information seeks to analyze the ramifications of proposed legislation that would allow people to use 'orphan works' ( a definition from online: 'An orphan work is a copyrighted work where it is difficult or impossible to contact the copyright holder.' To my mind there is only one way of looking at this issue: The pending/proposed legislation will come to pass sooner or later- I suspect it will come to pass sooner for reasons that are apparent if a person does a little research on corporate giants. The next step we, as artists, (and non artists for that matter) will have to do, is decide how we can prevent our works from ever becoming 'orphaned'.

This isn't the old days anymore. We live in a world where reality has become abstracted- seriously so- and how can you keep your name attached to an abstraction? This observation is directly aimed at artists who work in digital media of all kinds. It is also aimed at real world artists: painters, film makers, photographers, musicians and writers to name a few who make use of modern technology to digitize their works.

We got the house!

Later: guess I should have elaborated a bit!
We've been negotiating for a particular house since last Friday; offer (us), counter offer (them), counter the counter offer (us), the counter-counter offer was countered (them), followed by a counter to the countered counter-offer which was the FINAL offer we were giving. We had had enough all things considered so today I was prepared for the worst but hoping for the best! It seemed so long and nerve wracking but it all took place in just under a week- the miracle of modern technology with printers, scanners, cel phones and e-mail!
Now its time to find a building inspector, check the home over, get insurance on it, remove conditions of purchase, and have all this go thru the lawyers.
Then arrange to move which will probably take a full two days given the truck rental system and distances involved.
We should be in our new home by early summer. It's on a lot about as big as the one we're on now but has a full basement and is completely fenced! Rah Rah!
On another pleasant note I got Corel Draw Graphics Suite X4 in the mail yesterday- beta testing has its rewards!
And my featured photo 'White' got it's 100th fave!

I'm really honored to be featured by such diverse people amongst so many unique individuals. People who do regular features like Sandi and Deb just to name a few are the finest assets to this art community- they inspire the individual to produce work that pushes them beyond their boundries. Having your work featured in this way shows that someone else not only liked the art but thought enough of it show it to as many other people as possible.
On that note I would like to encourage people to take the time to do a feature of their favorite art works, artists, resource providers- whatever turns your crank, even if its only to put a list together with a short description to point others in directions that inspire artistic passion. It can be as easy as filling out one of those 'tag' things where you use the search engine to pull up some art- or cruising through a particular catagory of galleries on the main site, or as involved as the examples set by

Seems I missed a lot of journals so apologies if I'm blanking a bit. I'm still catching up on all the artworks however!

My husband and I are looking to buy our first house in a town about 3 hours from here. We looked at 7 houses last weekend, bounced an offer back and forth on one place but didn't sign anything because of certain issues, then I learned about vermiculite attic insulation.
This issue ended our interest in the house we were considering, and came up again in the alternate house with even worse results- confirmed presence of Zonolite in the attic.
Over last week I studied everything I could about house buying from our particular perspective- suspecting I should make myself aware of all the possible pitfalls- and have actually committed to keeping a written diary/log of what we're doing and what we have to watch out for. I'm slowly packing stuff up as well in preparation for the the move because we should be able to find something within the next month and probably even finalize the deal before the end of April. It's actually been nerve wracking as well as exciting because I get the feeling the Realtor we are dealing with doesn't really understand what a big deal this is for us- he's far too laid back but at least he's willing to pre-scout the homes before we make another trip out there.

Anyways, hope everyone is doing well, had a good Easter or *insert holiday here:____________*end of insert

I'm going to be off the radar for a little while for the rest of the month- the house hunting is moving into high gear and this involves research, planning, another long road trip, psyching up etc...
I did my bit in the DA collab project, answered most of my notes, comments etc., but really don't have time for much else even tho I had a ton of stuff I wanted to submit...I'm regretting that I haven't visited some of my other forums but riding through a month long depression leaves a lot of stuff by the wayside.

I had a bad dream last night. Not horrid- just sad and frightening till I woke up an realized what it was all about. I wanted to get up at 3:00am and write it down but then I figured I would probably remember it since it made so much sense to me.

I was in a gymnasium sitting on one of the chairs near the the main doors as people started to arrive for what looked like a play - there was a stage and the main seating area was all neatly set out with folding chairs. I wondered what I was doing there.
Lots of older people started to arrive and milled around the entrance conversing in German. I attempted some conversation with some of the women but it was as if I wasn't even there- an invisible spirit- or I was being ignored. I gave up and sat down in a back row when the lights started to dim to watch the show which turned out to be a humorous opera spoof with Bavarian yodeling.
When it was finished I walked out and found myself in the middle of a dilapidated shed in a yard - there was no sign of the building from which I had come which I had thought was a school or the downstairs of a modern church.
I looked around me and thought that the structure that I was standing in looked awfully like the carport at my mother's house (now sold). I started finding loose papers laying around in the old clutter that looked familiar; scraps of this and that that I attempted to collect them as a wind started up and a faint rain began.
I was aware of someone or some people calling me but I ignored them as I chased after flying bits and pieces feeling a desperate sense of urgency, trying to collect every little thing that struck at a heart string or memory.
The grass around the building was getting wetter as the rain picked up and the shed began to deteriorate quickly in front of me and I felt panicky as I was getting soaked and so were the papers that I had scrambled around so hard to collect. I knew I was crying because rain drops aren't hot and I was getting dirty from the muddy grass and brushing against the mouldering walls of the shed and still I heard voices calling me.
It was like I was trapped in a time loop yet I had very limited time to fulfill some imperative and impossible task and I thought: this is what drug addicts and homeless people must feel like. That was the strongest impression from my dream- the dread and desperation I felt.
But then as I raced back around to the front of the building I saw my sister's car parked in the dirt lane- she was yelling something at me from the driver's seat about hurrying up; my brother was in the back seat and my husband was sitting in the front passenger side with the door open, smiling and smoking a cigarette.

I realized that there was my whole family waiting for me, patiently for the most part, as I went through whatever crazy motions I had to get through at that point in my life.

My husband and I drove out to Vernon (450km from here) and did some house hunting. We decided to overnight it to check out some other places in the nearby towns (Armstrong and Enderby which are really small). Vernon is probably our best bet- its the northernmost town of the Okanogan stretch- lots of work, beautiful countryside, dryer climate and not as expensive as the lower mainland (Vancouver suburbs). We started our trip back around noon on Sunday and came home via Merritt with a brief tour of the Nicola valley and then jumped onto the Coquihalla hwy. where the last 20 km or so before the town of Hope we passed through a massively building snow storm. *shudder*
We had the dog with us on the trip which wasn't too bad- although of course there was a lot of shouting to the back end "SIT DOWN GAZU"!!! (he's big). Coming back through Merritt was cute- the girls in Tim Hortins were crowded at the drive-thru window ooh-ing and aw-ing over him. I have no idea why one of them had dog biscuits which she offered him and surprisingly, he ate. (he's fussy too)
Pictures on top of pictures and I haven't even sorted through the first lot. I don't know when I will ever get finished because theres so much else to be doing.

Anyways, hope everyone had a good weekend.

I finally made a decision to leave my mark in this little corner of Maple Ridge in a horticultural kind of way.
I distributed 2/3rds of the blue bell seeds I collected in strategic locations on the property.
Did the same with the California and Red poppy's.
And the Rose Campion.
I'm holding off on the lupin (because it's kind of a weed plant) and the foxglove (which takes two years to reach maturity and this place may be torn down and built over by then), and the columbines because I'm terribly sentimental about them as well.

I've got loads of photos to post now that I've sorted out my illustration files which went crazy messy with all the new patterns I made and experimenting with Corel's latest version of their software.

Now I've decided to do one of those tag things since it's quicker than writing a feature!

EDIT: I foolishly forgot to include thumbs of my own artwork that has been inspired by stock artists. Fixed that!

There are a million tulips coming up in the flower beds and I was perplexed by this for a little while until I remembered: Last year a woman let her child pull tulips from my garden through the fence and after yelling at her and then waiting a month or so I dug up all the tulips that grew close to the fence and replanted them as far from the edge as possible.
Later on in the summer I dug up more tulip bulbs which I moved as well but it's only now that I see where the first set are coming up- there are so many because the original tulips were pretty mature plants and had lots of extra bulb off sets. It's going to look so beautiful here again.
( the woman who let her child steal flowers actually stopped by and apologized one day out of the blue)

While getting changed after swimming this morning I heard the voice of an older woman saying to the young son of another woman "are you all ready for your swim?" in the cheerful way that older people speak to little kids.I couldn't hear the answer from inside my changing cubicle but the boy's mother was speaking with the older woman and it seemed that the boy was was quite the adorable little charmer.
I then heard the first woman say to the boy's mother "I wish I had a son like yours". And then in a conspiratorial kind of voice to the child: "My son is 60 years old." I wasn't the only one in the change room who laughed!

Yes its true you gain weight after you quite smoking. Frightening how quickly in my case.
I went to the pool this morning with my sis and was shocked at how out of shape I was. I used to be able to swim 2.5 pool lengths underwater.
I couldn't do a quarter of 1 length. Sadness. Sobbery.
I've also cut cream out of my coffee which should help matters since I drink a lot of coffee. That has gone surprisingly easy as well. ( it's day 3 of no cream).
Not much else to say other than I'm posting whatever art works I get done, trying to stay on top of comments, journals etc., and writing bits and bobs to use Znow's phrase.

Well I've finally got around to cleaning up my collected resources from DA. I did toss a lot of stock pics that no longer interested me last year and am just finishing off the patterns and brushes. It's amazing the quantity of stuff we can feel compelled to save to our hard drives. And yet much of it becomes stale after only a short time and most often before it ever gets put to use!

Just for the hell of it I downloaded the top patterns of all time from DA and I was stunned. Some of the so called patterns are utter crap- a scanned or cropped graphic that doesn't even pretend to seamlessly tile. Whats the point?! There is some real garbage up at the top. I wonder if it's permissible to leave a comment on someones page that consists of the definition of a seamless pattern?
I've got a new folder structure for patterns:
Design Pretty which is quite nice stuff
Design Tiny which is cleverly or prettily compact
Works but Ugly is not pretty or original but tile-able
and finally DRECK! which is utter garbage that cannot tile
( I'm planning on tossing the last two folders- just trying to commit the names of the providers to memory so I can avoid their stuff )

And brushes! I thought it would be a nightmare to go through them but Photoshop is quite flexible about letting you delete things while the program is in operation!
More crap, and by crap I am talking about stamps that are all of 25 pixels across. Completely useless for anything except the tiniest web graphics. I know some who may read this and be thinking "she only has 25 pixel square patterns!". Well, thats true enough, and a pattern will fill an entire page if you don't stop it. I also have most of my stuff available larger to people who are prepared to ask for it. I doubt that many of the tiny brushes I've downloaded could be made available to me larger- and legitimately. That last point will make the subject of an article I definitely plan to write about pretty soon.

But rather than bother to much with wondering I'm simply tossing a lot of brushes. The folder structure for brushes is presently:
High Res., Med. Res., and of course: Web Crap (for some useful things which simply shouldn't be thrown away such as bit-mapped foreign language characters).
And a bit of good news...believe it or not there are actually people on this site who scan and/or photograph their own resources to chop up for digital fodder- people who unquestioningly have the right to post resources that they generously make available to the rest of us- those people deserve more than just a tip of the hat. I would love to do a write up on truly original brush makers. May yet do it.

...smoking, that is.

Yup. I done did it.
I told myself that on the fifth day I would consider it a done deal although I was questioning it on day 4 when a craving hit...and of course I will probably continue to question it but for now I am a non-smoker.

I will share this for anyone who might be wondering about quitting in the early stages- because it may not be what some people expect...

I have never broke a bone in my body or been seriously sick in my life. (except for that bout of food poisoning but that was kind of beyond my control) I have come to the conclusion that because I never suffered a bone fracture or serious illness that I have taken the health of my body very much for granted. It has been pretty easy to kid myself despite the fact that I have a raspy voice, a hack in my throat, and out of control psoriasis.

I had never felt the touch of mortality- and I really don't care if that sounds over-dramatized - until the dentist began to loosen that upper canine of mine that was beyond repair. I could literally feel the sensation of that tooth knocking against my upper jaw bone just below and outward from my nasal cavity. No pain- just felt that I had bones that were getting jerked around.

After this extraction (my second one) I had to keep the blasted cotton over the hole so the clot could form quickly and cleanly. Unlike the first extraction which was further back in my mouth and easier to hold the cotton in place, the canine position is up front and took more effort to hold the pad in place - which would have allowed me to smoke. But the pain of the pad just touching the gums was such that I had to remove it within the hour and hope for the best. (You shouldn't be smoking without the cotton pad because the suction could dislodge and/or infect the clot which could lead to bigger problems).

I was scared of screwing things up and having to go to the dentist again so I was very careful. By the end of the day it occurred to me that I hadn't had a cigarette craving and on the second day of carrying on as if I had never had a cigarette in my life I thought consciously of taking advantage of this unplanned little bonus. The third day was good as well and I made a lot of resources for my software- just threw myself into it. The last two days had the odd craving but I got past them. My taste buds seem to have become more sensitive and I'm hungrier because of it. But beyond that it has been no effort to give up the tobacco.

The only thing I can add to this is that I think I had one of those moments where I became "ready to quit" and it was nothing like I expected. No feeling of determination. No strength of resolve. No feeling of triumph. It's just become a simple fact- what drama there was became internalized early on after the tooth extraction and now it's time to get on with other things.

Dentist again- extraction. I have not had a cigarette for 12 hours. This might be my year.
ouch ouch ouch
I ate half a round of brie cheese- it was soft. And bacon that was not crispy. And eggs. And this extraction was a breeze compared to last week...
We are due for 5 days of snow according to our weather people. Phooey.
I hope everyone is in good health or at the very least warm.

Wow. It's been over 2 weeks since I posted anything...thats a pretty long time for me.
I've been getting my photos cataloged and set up into proper galleries on my web pages which does take some time; to some extent I always despised those sites that had photo galleries full of pictures with no names beyond what the (digital) camera assigned them. I like things to have names- proper names where possible and I want my galleries to reflect that. Plus some descriptive text.

I've got a few other things keeping me busy too not the least of which is getting out and visiting my brother and sister...family becomes increasingly more important the less of them that you have...

Tooth ache...theres a whole lot of dental work in my very near future which has already begun- I'm grumpy about the pains I'm feeling and it gets in the way of creativity so thats why I haven't got any art or patterns done recently although the resolve to take care of the problem is obviously helping- that and finishing another photo gallery. lol

The weather in Vancouver/Maple Ridge has been ungodly miserable with the exception of the last two days and the garden is frozen in it's tentative progress towards spring blooming. I have to drive further out to get new views or variations on old views and my timing has not been good to try for retakes of some of my favorite scenes and this all adds up to another version of nothing.

A little bit of an update- well actually a big one...

I will no longer be providing free stock imagery on DA. and will soon be removing the current ones from this account. There appears to be more interest in my photographs outside of DA so I will begin licensing them though my web page. Given that relatively few people use my stock honestly compared to the sheer amount of stock I have on this site convinced me that the current situation is a bit foolish.

I just went over some statistics and at least 2000 people have downloaded full resolution images of my most popular stocks and textures- and I sure haven't seen anywhere near that number of artistic creations. So, to those of you who still have high res. files from my account that you downloaded previously- or even recently- the same rules apply- that hasn't changed.

I am simply going back to being an artist on this site and probably still a pattern maker. I might make brushes and cutouts as well but I imagine none of the resources will be too high res. on account of the stealing that goes on by people who grab things from my page and don't respect my wishes. I know I suggested against such a move in an article I wrote but that hardly applies if there is an opportunity to make money that I would be denying myself by providing stock for free.

I hope no one is too disappointed- no, actually I would like to hear from those people who might be disappointed and downloaded all the time without saying or doing anything about or with the photographs.

My only regret is not being able to provide stock the way I used to to the people who did consistently use and credit properly, and who provided a lot of motivation and creativity - Sandi in particular.
Of course now I will be marketing my stock on my web site- it's already in the works- and a new artist's license still needs to be hammered out not to mention prices which will be pretty cheap. But enough of this! Back to our regularly scheduled programming!

I had a quiet new year but it was nice.
There was a bit of a ruckus on the street but not much although there is glass at the end of the street which would explain why my car is starting the year off with a tire that leaks air...*sigh* And the old Dodge won't start either but it's probably a matter of dirty spark plugs since the engine is trying to turn over...
Husband is still sick so he won't go to work tomorrow- poor guy, I will haul him off to the car dealership and then to the doctors for a flu shot if he doesn't get better.

I updated my web site quite a bit gallery wise. I still have to write in my blog and repost the last patterns as well as a new pano and a tutorial for making panos.

Here's hoping that 2008 is the good year for all my watchers!.

...and it seemed that I really shouldn't be farting around on a computer but what the hell- it's not like theres tons of family left to spend time with. Old habits die hard so I told myself that it's o.k. to carry on and post a journal during the so-called holidays.

Christmas dinner I am looking forward to since my siblings should all be present and it's at my sister's best friends place- she is a real sweetheart I must say.

I did all of my Christmas shopping and gave out the gifts already so really theres very little left to do except go to the cemetery tomorrow. I think my mother would be pleased that I finally splurged on a few clothes- 2 pairs of boots (town and country lol ) and a nice long black sweater plus 2 new dressy tops and two pairs of black slacks.

I also coloured my hair black and it looks really nice. It was like a kick in the ass for the psoriasis. I always found that after colouring my hair I got some relief from this condition for a short while afterwards- now I have to work with it to keep it from getting worse. The struggle goes on!

As an artist who is primarily a photographer, and secondarily a stock provider, I 'got on the net' to firstly promote my own work.
I'm pretty sure thats the same reason why the majority of stock photography providers do what they do! But specifically, Deviant Art is where I really began to get involved in cyber-communications and networking, and it's from that point of view that I write this article.

Posting one's own work is an attempt to show the world what it is we love so much- in photography it's usually very apparent what our tastes run toward; landscapes, animals, macro, and portraiture are just a few examples. Whatever self-consciousness we may have in the real world has no bearing on our internet lives and we are free to express our visions and art in almost any way we see fit. But as a provider of stock and resources there is additionally a desire to contribute to the creativity and artistic intentions of others - which brings me to my next observation- the photo-manipulators who use stock to create their own art works.

I wasn't really to aware of this category of art in the beginning but eventually started to realize that a lot of the art they posted was essentially sophisticated digital collage. Once I realized there was a demand for 'raw material' in the way of stock photography for the sake of art ( and profit - lets not kid ourselves! ) I recognized a potential niche for a particular kind of photography I enjoy indulging in: textures. I don't collage to much except when putting together panoramas so I never even knew about things like 'overlays' until I started looking at works of popular DA photo-manipulators.
Consequently, I opened up a new account on DA to put my stock and texture shots in but eventually moved them over to my main account since it was getting awkward to manage due to the rapidly increasing amounts of photographs I found I was taking. This brings me to a very important point about what is stock and what is art: I know many photographers will take a series of photographs, choose the best ones for 'art', and set aside some for stock.

I'm not at this point in my photographic career yet.

When I originally opened up the stock account I started taking photos specifically as stock shots since I have a strong affinity for the macro/texture type of shot. I also started to branch out to more 'object' oriented shots that could be 'cut out' for the photo-manipulator crowd and lastly, started submitting the odd landscape as stock. The point of all this is that my personal photography is still quite personal to me- even when I take a series of photos of the same subject for my own pleasure. I had an awesome Saturday! My husband and I I drove to Hope at about 4:30am and parted ways- he went deer hunting with my cousin and I went house hunting out in Merritt- wheeeeeeeeeee!!!!!!!!!! in the new car!!!
Couldn't have asked for a better day- sun was shining, snow was off the roads, and NO TRAFFIC on the highways- un-funking believable.
I got all nostalgic in Merritt and Lower Nicola from my very first year on the carnival circuit...I had a great talk with the local realtor but have to admit that old Merritt has gone downhill- the new part of 'town' is actually just off the main highway where there are 4 big box stores. We accidentally found out how Merritt got a Walmart from a Maple Ridge realtor but I digress....

The car handled beautifully- I can see why it's classified as an SUV. There was no difference between taking on a hill and driving on the flats. The car really made the trip a great experience- I would never have enjoyed it so much in the old Dodge.

Anyways, I took the Coquihalla Hwy (No.5) from Hope to Merritt, to Lower Nicola, then to Logan Lake (don't ever bother unless you have family out there ), then on to Ashcroft and Spence's Bridge from where I came home on the No.1 Highway (Trans Canada).

The only sour thing about the whole trip was the last hour where the poor design of the head rest made it extremely uncomfortable. I have to see about getting this changed because it forced me into a slight hunch for the whole trip which didn't affect me till the evening.

I just finished posting my best shots from the trip- hope everyone had a great weekend too!

Going to Merritt this weekend- check out the neighborhoods for houses and do some photography! The weather is good these days so there shouldn't be to much snow- it's a 4 to 5 hour drive one way so that means I will only want to spend 2-3 hours one way - I'm checking out the town- might drive to Kamloops as well- we shall see.
Hubby is going hunting with my cousin on the same day and hopefully one of them will get a deer this time. Speaking of which, I got a really nice shot of a mule buck today coming home from Langley- an 8 point with two does wandering amongst the horses and old trucks in the field of the now derelict home where the police busted a marijuana grow op earlier this year. I will post that shot a bit later after the trip...I hope to get a shot of coyotes and possibly bighorn sheep although I don't know if the season is right for sheep- who knows!

I haven't been on line much other than the odd rant on the forum...

Real life is chugging along briskly and there's plenty of stuff outside that needs to get done before it freezes up here...also making plans for the future and what not.

Now that some online issues seem to be taken care of- or at least can be ignored for a bit-I will try to finish up a couple of off site projects and then will try to post some stuff this week and catch up on messages...I actually took some photos today as the sun was out in force for the first time in weeks. I also waxed the new car- something I have never done before!

Sunday, Nov 25.

I got some photos posted from the past week and today. We went to Grant Narrows Park kind of on a whim- it was pretty nice weather and driving these days is a total joy in the new car.
I saw an otter for the first time in my life on the marsh.

The morning started out strangely- a tow truck driver was guarding the pickup truck that was perched on a cement barrier, straddling a railing running along the sidewalk of a ravine wedged between the barrier and a small tree (broken) and just hanging over the ravine. After I looked the truck over I walked back to the house and grabbed my camera and took some pictures- but looking at the smashed glass of the drivers side made me feel a bit bad...I asked the tow truck driver if he knew if the guy who had been driving was o.k.
The driver didn't know or care- he said the truck had been stolen from a woman garage in Maple Ridge. Oopsie.
My husband and I had seen the driver at 4:30 in the morning walking up the street and hollering into his cell phone for his friend to pick him up: "Dude, I've fucked up my truck!"
Neither one of us felt like going out since he was probably drunk but at least had a friend who was going to pick him up- we had no idea that the truck was that 'fucked'. Now that I think about it I should have called 911 anyway.
Instead I called the police this morning but couldn't give much of a description since it was dark- I talked with my neighbor who had heard most of what we had heard- now I suspect the guy who totaled the truck was the cousin of our other neighbor who I thought it might have been in the first place because what woke me originally was the sound of yelling across the street and the sound of tires spinning out in front of that house.
I don't know if I should call the police again to share the suspicion or not. Dilemma.

On another note: I can't see how this new Gallery thing at DA is supposed to benefit us. My previously lovely html links are now useless. I don't mind the odd bug in the gallery (like scraps showing!) but I am disgusted that the our access to the rankings of our gallery content has been disable. Actually, it's more like the fourth rat...
Nothing to be done about it except keep catching them!
I almost forgot! We had a cat for a day- a kitten actually. It just showed up on our back deck and wanted to play Since it was a friendly beast and quite clean we decided it could spend the night. It gratefully ate the tuna and bread and drank the water we gave it but complained about wanting to go back outside. We actually walked to the nearby apartment complex with it and left it there as it was no doubt someones beloved pet but it followed us back home. We took it back in and let it out twice more but since it didn't seem to want to leave and it was getting cold out we whisked it back inside where it complained some more and I imagine it prowled the house for most of the night afterwards. (We locked Gazu in my office overnight just to be safe.)

Morning came and kitty was let out and never returned. Damn.

I see my subby has finally kicked in- hurrah!
I've been kind of busy with my writing and the web site so haven't posted much. I tried to get more involved in the resources community but something is always calling me away- thats life I suppose.
On the subject of resources: I collected quite a few colourful leaves from the trees and scanned them and hopefully soon can post them as transparent .png files. Also some hand painted stuff if the scans turn out all right. I'm still getting requests from people with absolutely nothing in their galleries for large files- I'm polite but I really have to wonder about people who know enough to use this site to formulate a request but don't have anything to show for themselves.
I've also finished writing an article that I want to send to the local paper seeing as they have an open invitation for submissions. I think it's pretty good - the encounter with the bear on the Alouette River and obviously I have photos to go with it...

Yesterday my husband and I were coming back from the shooting range and were stopped at the scene of an accident- the tow truck driver was in the middle of pulling a car out of the bush- literally. It must have flipped over as the rear driver's side passenger seat had the hood all caved in. The car was quite deep into the woods - there was a wide bushy ditch and then cedars and pine trees...I can't imagine how the car went straight in from a flat, straight road. Just 2 days earlier we literally saw a truck drive into a pedestrian on a turn signal- the pedestrian did not have right-of-way but I'm sure the driver will be penalized. It's nuts how many accidents happen on the roads.

Hopefully next month we will be buying a truck as the old beast is starting to show it's age- I doubt an old K-car is worth much as a trade so we will probably keep it as the second car. We are looking for a 4 wheel drive or 4x4 and theres no shorta... ]]> *12monthsOFwinter Death of a rat http://12monthsOFwinter.deviantart.com/journal/15096188/ http://12monthsOFwinter.deviantart.com/journal/15096188/ Sun, 21 Oct 2007 22:38:10 PDT I was watching television after dinner this evening when I heard it- the little scampering of clawed feet - a rat that got into our home has been in residence for about 4 days. My husband had already gone to bed and I debated doing the same but decided to look under the fridge with the flashlight instead.

There it sat, complacently staring at me in all it's beady eyed glory. This was the second time we had stared each other in the eye and the rat knew it had nothing to fear because in this old house there were many passages behind the walls for it to hide in.
I decided I would catch up on messages and went to my little office to carry on with it- it had actually occurred to me to put the dogs uneaten food back inside the sealed plastic bin where it normally gets served out of. It was, after all, most likely the dogs food which was sustaining the rat as we don't generally leave any other edibles out over night. At about 1:00 I heard the trap snap and the skittering sound of the rats feet on the kitchen floor and spent about 3 seconds looking for a flashlight before giving up and running for the living room lamp.

I peered under the shoe shelf where the cheese baited trap sat empty but could still hear scratching noises. I bent further down and saw that the rat was in the far corner attempting to crawl into or around the heating vent. I didn't know for sure what had happened but I knew that it was injured because it could have easily escaped if it wasn't. Still not too certain of it's abilities of escape I frantically looked for something to attempt to catch it with that would keep my flesh well away from it's teeth. By the time I settled on the clear plastic cake cover with the handle on top the rat had made it around the vent and the shoe shelf and shuffled around dropping blood everywhere. It was grotesque.

I awoke my husband to complete the dirty deed and supplied him with leather gloves and the hard plastic sheet which I usually slide under the clear plastic tub I use to capture big spiders with. (that particular tub would have been to small and risky to use on this rat which had turned out to be surprisingly large- about the length of my hand with a tail of about 7 inches in length.)

Half asleep (poor guy) he slid the plastic under the rat under the cover and transported it outdoors into the night and completed the task which I will not detail any further. In fact, I had to walk away when I heard the sound.
The bloody cake cover now sits on the deck outside and I will probably throw it away rather than attempt to clean it. (Yuk).

So ends the story of the rat.

On a somewhat related note I don't intend to molly coddle people who just come out and ask me to e-mail them patterns or stock. Unbelievably there are people who just do this with no explanation of why or what they want to use it for and when I look in their galleries I find they don't even use resources (or if they have you sure can't tell) or, as in another case, their gallery is full of stuff that is totally resource driven with NO credits.

I don't have the patience for that kind of thing so will link them to my e.u.l.a. or the news article I posted earlier today- if they still want to use my stuff they will have to read it and figure it out or just forget it. I've got too many plans and projects to worry about baby walking people thru all this- and it's not the resource providers job anyway. The resource providers job is to create and protect and manage her assets. In light of all that I will probably post the last of my old pattern sets in the next week and focus on stocks again- all the stuff that I was hesitating about posting on DA because I hadn't firmly defined how I want to handle issues that might have come along but now they have and this is the path I'm taking.

Anyway, it's time to go to bed!

Oct 18.

Finally got the last of the 'old' and new patterns up. What a chore. That will be it for the foreseeable future as far as they go.

It's raining heavily now in Vancouver; can't do any photography which sucks since I'm not feeling artistic lately. This business with the rat doesn't help- I found the origami crane I've had for over 15 years chewed on in at least 3 places- this thing sat near the top of bookshelf!
I know there is at least one more rat in the house because I saw yesterday morning running between the washer and dryer- it probably got in through the dryer vent. I heard it under the floor about an hour ago and just have to grit my teeth till it's bed time and the trap gets set. Hopefully it will take the bait and have a cleaner death than the last one. *shudder*

I shall have to update my subscription I see. Anyone who checks out the latest resources I've posted will see how I'm dealing with the recent rip off issue from outside sites.
To those of you who don't know me: don't be shy about noting to use larger stuff but use your common sense; read the rules and understand why they exist. Understand what 'crediting' actually means and use the correct code for peoples names or avatars to show up.
I will check out your galleries/websites and blogs and if I like what I see all is cool and I will e-mail or link you to a larger res file, but, if I see you just opened an account I will probably not bother answering your note because I have plenty of things to keep me busy and don't want my time wasted. I don't want to sound like a mean person, this is just life.

I'm experimenting a lot digitally lately but at the same time want so much to work on my traditional drawing skills and get back into water colours. There really isn't enough time to do both AND keep up with the photography that I love! I have the attention span of a gnat when it comes to art- the only thing that really was easy to stay focussed on was the resources I provided but that has now turned into more work than pleasure .

But a good piece of news is that Corel is going to use one of my art works in the newest ed. of it's software so YAY! This makes me happy- I've used their software for a long time and I'm looking forward to buying the latest release once the beta testing phase is over and they market it to the public.

My sister has moved to Surrey from Abbotsford so she's a bit closer to where I live which is nice. My brother has a new place in Langley city- I'm looking forward to seeing it and taking stock shots of his odd assortment of knives and gadgets.

It's getting colder in this part of the world, the leaves are going brown and falling and the spawning of the salmon is in full swing- I have a few pictures of some pinks and chums but what I really would love is to get out to the Fraser Canyon for a shot of the sockeye heading upriver. It's an unbelievable site of animal migration...ah well, maybe next year. Hope everyone has a nice weekend.

A little update on what I've been up to

I have been spending quite a bit of time cataloging my photo collection and have found a good site full of knowledgeable people to help me with some of the stumpers.
Then of course the IPTC data which I won't bore anyone with except to say I have lately put this info to good use.

And I got some stuff featured lately!

But on a more sombre note regarding pattern resources and stock/textures: I spent a fair amount of time contacting people whose work has been ripped by the typical internet thief who posts artists works on his site with no permission and refuses to contact people who e-mail him.

I don't want people to lose faith in Deviant Art because it is not the fault of this site when someone else takes from it without first asking. I am encouraging people to get more technologically savy about this reality, use watermarks, and CARE about this issue because it will not go away.

On another subject that I will only bring up this once: I suffer depression- I have since childhood and it has it's ups and downs- when I don't post for a long time or take part in forums I'm supposed to be part of it's because of that. I have to force myself to care about things. Like now. But it certainly was uplifting to find that people like my work to acknowledge it with so many other wonderful artists- it balanced out the crappiness of the theft issues and the grueling task of editing the photo collection I have.

And I miss writing. And painting. And drawing. These are all things I can't do when I'm down- things I convince my self aren't worth the time and become subordinated to other tasks. Losing focus and the ability to balance my feelings with the reality that my life is actually pretty good. Anyway, I thought I should mention it at least once.

Here's how it is.
Lately my stuff is getting ripped off of this site- I don't care if eventually people right their wrongs because I'm tired of trying to contact people who should be capable of reading- even people who don't speak English have no excuse. My manners around foreigners are better than around my own kind and I expect the same from others. What I'm saying is that people who I can't communicate with language wise are more frustrating to deal with than English speakers. What I'm also saying is that I expected this at some point but didn't quite know how I would deal with it when it happened- getting ripped is not a question of 'if' but rather 'when'.

So the solution is a drastic one: no more full res. files. surprise, surprise. Really thats about all a person can do. I already did this with stock but now I'm forced to do it with my patterns which are really being taken advantage of. People don't have to be members to download from this site which would explain why so many resources get downloaded with no comments. It's just take, take, take. Frankly, I wouldn't mind if you want to use my patterns to beef up your web pages AS LONG AS YOU DID THE POLITE THING AND ASK and then GIVE CREDIT. It's not like I plan on ever charging money for them (unless you wanted an actual vector file of a pattern! ) But some people aren't asking and it's still in the early stages so I'm not putting up with it anymore.

So- if you really want something in a bigger resolution you have to - gasp!- contact me. Write a note or an e-mail and I will most likely link you to a copy of a high res file- this obviously applies to serious people only. My patterns were meant to be fun stuff - fit for farting around in Photoshop or whatever graphics program you use- but also large enough to be able to get some texture showing if you did decide to print with them- and some of them were actually designed to look decent in print form (the ones that had higher numbers like 200, 400, 500 tacked onto the end.) I was even considering making seriously printable ones now that the vector patterns are getting easier to make but no cigarillo. All my old patterns are now 25 pixels square and I'm sorry if that upsets people who regularly downloaded my stuff and commented. But understand that it's very frustrating and insulting to be stolen from by total strangers who won't even answer e-mails or allow you into their sites. The latest incident has somehow got solved by I have no clue what changed the thief's mind.

For the record, all bit mapped patterns are generally available (by request) at 100 pixels square but if they have numbers like 200, 400, or 500 in front of the 25 that means the originals are that size- you may only see these numbers on a downloaded file as I did not change the original names.
Any pattern set that is followed by an XXX is actually infinite in size because it was originally made in vector software.
But seriously, I'm not gonna make the file available bigger unless I see you as a seriously productive artist or unless I know you really well.

As for new stuff: I may do as I'm doing with the stocks/textures: temporarily available at full res. (whatever it may be) and then put up a smaller file later. I don't know. I'm really annoyed as I enjoy making these things and seeing what other people do with them. I really regret this but despite copyrights, limited file sizes, watermarks, and now foreign language warnings I will still get ripped off...but if people are going to steal then at least it will only be these tiny res. files.

I wrote a small editorial last week that got a really nice response [link] . To all those people that had something to say I want to reply thank you. I'm still reading all the comments.
DA really spoils a person for informing me of notes and comments but evidently it isn't the same for news articles; If I hadn't faved my own article I probably would have lost track of it for much longer!
I've been a bit stressed this week and trying to keep really busy.

I went thru all my old bookmarks and brutally edited them and wrote down all my sites and passwords by hand. There are about 28 'keeper' sites and about 24 secondary sites that I find important enough to keep.

I wrote 3 tutorials/guides on editing IPTC data which was a lot of digging around in freeware and Windows- and they are still not as comprehensive as I would have liked but- oh well- the info is there for people who are in the process of tagging their photos and need to figure out what not to waste time with!

I've uploaded a few more prints (LARGE dimmensions because my new camera has a lovely resolution ) and have actually updated my website. (gasp)

I am about to step into the beta testing program for Corel Draw which should be fun- I will finally feel entitled to be nit-picker!

I read some things yesterday that disgusted me. I was looking at some of the current contests and one particular one was open to club members and non club members but the club members, it was shamelessly stated, would have a 1 point advantage in the voting results.
I kind of just blinked at that. I wondered if the people who run that contest would give their members a 100 yard head start in a marathon that they organized. I can see no justified reason for giving members of any club winning advantages- it sounds like shear snobbery not to mention unfair and unethical. If you can't compete on the same field as all the other people you shouldn't play- and you shouldn't be hosting a contes in my opinion. If someone can give me a good reason why he or she should participate in a contest like that I would love to hear it.

Another thing I read today was in a journal- it looked like an advertisement for junk food wrapped up in a sincere and well written lament about avoiding temptation in a grocery store.
It's not that I'm against advertising or looking for sponsors, it's simply that I believe people should be more selective in what types of products they choose to pimp. I understand that people sometimes can't be too choosy but I don't think this was the case...considering that the west- particularly Americans- have a huge obesity problem telling them that you are in love with a particularly fatty and sugary garbage food just helps a company sell more of that product.
Which wouldn't be that bad by itself but to describe the product in detail, it's affects on your taste buds, and posting a picture of it in your journal just for good measure tells me you may already have been contacted by an advertiser and really need money.

Still another thing in journals thats been bugging me for awhile- certain people who talk about their temperamental (spoiled) kids and make excuses for their behavior. I don't care how gifted, good looking, or intelligent your kids appear to be- if you describe scenarios of out-of-control little savages that is telling me you are failing as a parent even as you make excuses for it. I wish you could read what you have written coming from someone else's journal.

Anyways, I had some of the weekend to myself as my hubby headed off to the wilderness with my cousin's husband to check out the state of their secret hunting camp. I went to the Langley Cruise In (a MASSIVE classic car show in my home town that takes over the entire old downtown core) and took lots of pics. Still have to see which ones turned out as I never hit the end of the memory card so took more photos yesterday. A gorgeous day but I kind of had to rush home during the sunset since my husband got back early and was locked out of the house! He and my cousin's hubby said Merritt was very beautiful (which I already knew) and teaming with wildlife. They found loads of scat, rubs, hair snarls etc from many animals- only didn't see a bear although it was most likely a young bear that had done some damage to their camp over the winter.

I've also been tackling the tedious task of editing all my photos so that the iptc. and comment section of the photos are filled in with appropriate descriptions and copyright. Good thing the files are organized by date and subject already which makes it easier (I have something like 20000 pictures to go thru). I will probably write another tutorial on this subject or maybe redo the current one- I use another program in conjunction with Irfanview to handle this task and that program deserves mention.

Anyway, that about it for now...

Sept. 1

And I thought this would be a quiet day of fishing and farting around on the computer... Well it started that way!
My husband wanted to try his luck salmon fishing on the Fraser River and actually did catch 2 salmon- one of which was a keeper. We went to Timmie's for lunch after the first catch and then came back where a tug on the line resulted in a nice foot long salmon which was gutted and then put on ice and then later one more bite on the line which broke it resulting in the loss of the new lure my husband had just purchased.
I had practically fallen asleep cradled between two large logs on the boom from which we had set up out little camp - it was perfect weather- really warm but the breeze was cool and constant but did rouse myself enough to scribble what amounted to abstract art in my sketchbook. (that part of the day was actually scary! )
I did see a kingfisher for the first time in my life, and later was able to identify another bird I had never seen here before from the photo I took- a cormorant.
Didn't see any harbor seals today but we know they're there from our first visit to this part of the river. Since the luck was gone we decided to head home but since my husband wanted to go fishing again tomorrow we had to find a tackle shop to get some more lures. After a brief (but quite educational) visit to one of the local shops I suggested we stop at one of the two small rivers to see if any of the salmon had made it upstream yet.

This is where it got interesting for me. On our way towards Maple Ridge Park ( the road crosses both the N. Alouette and S. Alouette rivers in a very short space as they are only about 100 meters or so apart at this point) we came up to Fern Avenue at the 232nd intersection and we could already see the deer crossing the road. First 2 then 3 crossed from one side of the street to the next as I made my way thru the 4-way stop and pulled onto the shoulder of the road. I dug the camera out of the back seat as the third deer appeared and fired away. 2 spike bucks and a doe- black tailed deer obviously quite used to people. I'm pretty sure they have been getting fed by the locals since they acted like cattle more than wild animals.
They trotted off to the intersection I had just gone thru and headed down the dead end lane- all the cars were going really slow and carefully so I u-turned and headed down the dead end road to try for more pictures.
Unbelievable a guy in a huge truck who had been observing the deer from the dead-end road pulled up beside us and started to yak with me from his truck about 'not taking pictures' and just 'remembering them'. Idiot was drunk/stoned as hell and I put on this nice face and attitude because 1. He is big and drunk with more drunk/stoned people in the back of his car 2. I thought he was a hunter at first and the hippy talk kind of stunned me and finally 3. I didn't want him to get ignorant and gun his engine or hit the horn and scare off the deer.
Anyway, I finally started to pull away and the deer in the mean time were sampling all the different plant s growing on the edge of someones garden. I actually pulled into the home's driveway, got about 10 more shots of the deer and backed out as they headed right into the property! What a hoot!

After than I said to my husband "Now we can check out the river real quick" and got back on the road and stopped literally and geographically 1 block from where we had left the deer but on the other side of the N. Alouette. I hopped out of the car wanting to make it quick since I knew my hubby was hoping to get back out to the Fraser River during the tidal up-wash. I got to the edge of the river bank and was debating going down to the water and as my eyes traced out the easiest route down they lan... ]]> *12monthsOFwinter
