First of all there are 3 major things that I learned from this. 1. Have more respect for the handicapped. 2. Sometimes you need to think outside the box to solve a task. And last but not least make the best of a bad situation. You can’t sit around forever and feel sorry for yourself, or at least in my case 8 weeks. If people want to do stuff for you let them, after all it is nice to not have to do anything for a while.


Ok so more about my first point. Because my crutches are hard to use, when I go out I use a wheelchair, and let me tell you it’s not fun. However people can make it better, or worse. Sometimes it’s hard to get around stores and stuff so employee’s move stuff to help me get around. Also people stand in my way and won’t move, now that is frustrating. Also if you meet someone who wants to talk to you let them, because you never know what wisdom you can learn from them. If you are not in a cast and reading this then make sure you remember this, offer handicapped people help, just not too much. If they don’t want to take it, don’t take offence to it. Their may be underlying reasons that you don’t know about.



Now answer me this question have you ever had a problem that you needed to solve, but when you tried to you had to do it a different way then you normally would. Well that is was it is like all the time for me when I am in my cast. You can’t just go about your normal life, you have to do things differently. Like for instance when I take a shower I have to sit down on a lawn chair in the tub talk about thinking outside the box, or when want to go swimming I have to go on the side instead of just climbing down the latter. I must admit that it is a chagellen but after a while you do get used to it. Also on the bright side (if there is one lol), this is a skill that will help you along the way after you come out of this cast.

You can sit around moping for the next 6 or 8 weeks or you can make the best of it. Try to do some things and have a little fun. I know that it may be hard, but you will feel a whole lot better if you get out and do something. I even regret this sometimes, because I did have some oppertunites that I passed up. Although you need to be strong during this, allow you self time to be sad. After all you are in a cast and it’s not gonna be fun and games all the time. making the best of a bad situation doesn’t just have to be about being in a cast, it can apply to all sorts of different situations throughout your life. Like if you have plans and it rains that day, try something indoors, or if you want something really bad but when you go to get it there is a problem. Try to come up with a clever solution.


As I near the end of my cast time I now think that this wasn’t as bad as it could’ve been. I often find myself thinking of the people in the world who are far worse than I am. I must admit that this helps you to cope with such a hardship. Just remember the things that I said to you and 8 weeks will go by fast. I know that it’s not fun but you can make it better. Also if you read this and say oh that’s never gonna happen to me, you never know because it just might. To all in a cast out there good luck, and those who are not consider yourself VERY lucky.


Don’t take something for granted, because you never know what you have until it’s gone.
