The practical gesture of moving the brush upon the blank surface of canvas recalls that one of tattoing the pale skin of a dead body. Visions to me are so cruelly concrete that painting them has the same value of giving life to their spiritual flesh. Now the cyber space, the high definition technology, the virtual realities, the digital film-making, the 3D and 5.1 audiovisual experience, the web streaming are announcing the end of the “Multimedia Era” and the beginning of the “Multimedianic Age”. Therefore, even when I just paint or direct a movie, what I unleashed on the canvas or on the screen is nothing but the “imprinting” of these medianic visions which contain all the high definition realities of the Invisible. Visions mean listening to the images and watching the sound. Over the years I applied this concept to everything I managed to create in order to stay faithful to the source of my irrational and biological pulsions, since I never considered my art as a simple activity separated by my daily life. Many of my short movies, art videos and novels such as "The Rain Frames", "Endometria", "Amnihollow", "aVoid", "Body Locked" deal with the recurrent theme of the transmogrification of matter and of human body, often signifing the substantial ambiguity of being, where illusions, hallucinations and dreams are made of the same tissue of our so-called reality and sometime are able to unveil realms more concrete than our own world. In my new feature movie "NEPENTE"that will be premiered in the next weeks, I developed these themes linking them to the new existential crisis of human identity in the era of the social networks, forums, blogs and chat rooms where the massive proliferation of imaginary personalities has dramatically increased the fragmentation and the distortion of our Ego.

Features

Afan's Lulu storefront: [link]
Alessandro Fantini's paintings
[link]
Alessandro Fantini's graphic art
[link]
Alessandro Fantini's miscellanea
[link]
AFAN ATHANOR: Alessandro Fantini's art blog [link]
Member of:

The book depicts the progression of Fantini's quest for the medianic rendition of his most inner pulsions and visions. Since the early 90s, with the discovery of the oil painting and the surrealist concepts, his artworks higlight a turbulent tension towards the cinematic and narrative syntaxes that will soon led him to deal with shortmovies, novels, comics, videoart and music languages. The book is structured into three sections which explore chronologically the pictorial and graphic dimensions of his visionary craftmanship.

Among the featured artworks there are the David Lynch's portrait displayed at the London Brick Lane Gallery, the erotic oil on wood board "O.B.E" featured in the Fantini's selfportrait printed on the Jean Michel Jarre's AERO album booklet, the celebrative painting of the Jarre's "Oxygene" 30th anniversary, and the tribute to Stanley Kubrick personally donated to his wife Christiane Kubrick. Comments and notes by the artist himself, Jean Michel Jarre, Charles de Lauzirika, Claudio Castellini, Lorenzo Fantini.

“Alessandro’s devotion to oil and canvas has rewarded us we with enough medianic meditations on the nature of the human mind to keep us transfixed for many years to come. His discipline and persistence from early childhood through his teens and now into his adulthood has taken the viewer on an incredible journey through an isolated landscape that invites dialogue, challenges preconceptions of existence, and teases us with sexual imagery that writhes through both foreground and background”. Lorenzo Fantini – excerpt from the foreword

Afan's Lulu storefront: [link]
Alessandro Fantini's paintings
[link]
Alessandro Fantini's graphic art
[link]
Alessandro Fantini's miscellanea
[link]
AFAN ATHANOR: Alessandro Fantini's art blog [link]
Member of:

Il Varco Semilunare - The Semilunar Passage

Alessandro Fantini releases his first art book devoted to documenting 15 years of graphic enquiries and preliminary medianic sketches, flamboyant apparently illustrative pencil and black ink drawings and portraits spreaded over 130 pages with one hundred black and white plates. Commentaries, poems and memories by the author himself support this intense journey through the AFAN's ambiguous and everlasting creative anamnesis. Available at [link] in the italian language soft-cover edition.

I found this article on CourrierInternational.com and I suddenly recognized the same concepts I explained many time also on this journal and in my diaries. Many italian galleries still keep to write me inviting me to exhibit or join group exhibitions and art fairs requesting crazy prices for the submissions.
My preference to exhibit mostly outside the italian boundaries isn't a conseguence of my hate and loathing for italian culture, but a natural result of a deep putrefaction of the contemporary italian culture, completely rotten and intoxicated by the television and mass-media post-fascist pseudo-culture.

Contemporary art does not interest Italians

"Italy is backward-looking and ignores contemporary art", complains Monique Veaute, the new director of the Palazzo Grassi in Venice, the property of the French François Pinault. "We are a country without leadership, even in the field of the arts. ... It is clear that the conservation of artistic heritage is fundamental. But we can no longer ignore the contemporary. Italy panders to the glorification of its artistic past. It does not exhibit contemporary artists who have to go to Paris or New York to become known ... . Today's Italy is going through a series of identity crises: other than the political crisis it is experiencing an artistic crisis where gallery owners have been transformed into mere shopkeepers."

The italian painter, writer and moviemaker Alessandro Fantini will display a selection of his best oil paintings in the group exhibition organized by the Brick Lane Gallery. He will present for the first time to the public also a new artwork dedicated to the 25th anniversary of "Blade Runner". Among the artworks it will be exhibited the portrait of David Lynch and a recent tribute to the Jean Michel Jarre's masterwork "Oxygene".

"Alessandro is an artist. He’s always been an artist. He never decided to become an artist, he just was. Others may take up the pen or the brush or the camera late in life and make a choice to become one. Not Alessandro – he was born one. This isn’t hyperbole just a statement of fact. You see I watched Alessandro grow as a writer, a painter and most recently as a filmmaker over two decades. I saw how he turned a family house into a Renaissance like gallery with a plethora of exquisitely painted visions, single handedly creating a new reality with its own vocabulary of recurring motifs and symbolism. If Alessandro was just a painter, that would be an impressive enough accomplishment, however Alessandro has attempted to transcend a variety of medias. His attention to details and single-mindedness often made me envious and spurred me to challenge my own creative skills.
You see whenever you watch an Alessandro short film or stare into one of his paintings you’ll be confronted with a dialogue with a Madonna of unearthly ethereal beauty. You’ll see transmogrifications of form into surrealistic shapes often with Lovecraftian overtones and Gigeresque undertones. You won't feel very comfortable staring into these worlds and one can only wonder at the dreams that Alessandro dreams. But you will go away thinking about this; even though they are impossible things that only Alice could try to believe before breakfast why do they look so real?"
I'm using this transitional time to shoot my new music video whose storyboard I prepared on the last weeks of 2006. This time I chosen to develop more the pure emotional impact of single still images, like a vivid phosphenic showreel of distant memories photos generated by the metaphysical source of my song. Like always I use to modify little by little the editing sequence inserting brief animations and irrational glimpses of hallucinatory details I perceived during the video-production itself.
I'm also planning to animate the cover of my new book as soon as I will receive the "imprimatur" from my publisher. I hope this time there will be also the chance to translate it in english.

ALESSANDRO FANTINI - The Orgonic Poem exhibition - 10 november 2006 Muse Art Gallery - Muse Village - Secondlife.com

The concrete unreality of Second Life is the result of a mixture of visible and invisible, ethereal fantasy and high craftmanship of creative minds powered by the need to eliminate the limits of human life.
In the same way the texture of our flesh and desires is animated by mysterious streams of energy, the same ones which permeate the organic structure of animal and astral beings. A scientist and follower of freudian theories, Wilhelm Reich, defined this one with the name of “Orgonic Energy”, the attraction of free electrons to life itself, an astounding force that human people can experience at their highest intensity during their orgasm. But this is more than a simple perception of pleasure or the mechanical conseguence of sexual arousal. In the artistic vision of the italian “multi-medianic” painter Alessandro Fantini, the Orgonic power manifests itself in the most shocking convulsion of flesh, in the most spasmodic acrobacies of erotic delirum, in the hallucinations of desires which conjure to elevate the human spirit to the heights of ecstasy and mystical revelation.
These oil paintings of Alessandro Fantini showed in the “Orgonic Poem” collection, aren’t intended just to be an easy way to attract the attention of people towards an eerie concept of eroticism and perversion. The artist didn’t paint them simply focusing on illustrating the Orgonic Theory. He discovered all by himself the influence of this eroto-mystical vision of chemistry and physics just after he painted these images, like someone who has been able to intepretate his dreams after reading the books of Freud. They offer, instead, another visual key useful to open the gates of the cosmic mistery that envelopes us, as in the so-called Real Life as well in this Second Life. ‘Cause we know, in both dimensions the most terrifying and seductive entities for our human identity are always SEX and DEATH. It remains the unique path towards the spiritual discovering of a truth we cannot reach here, neither in the Real nor in Second Life.

Lewis Carroll was not only a great story teller for children: he was a brilliant visionary prophet of what the humankind powers to trespass our limited reality could reach within the next centuries. When he wrote "Through the looking glass" he was showing the enormous potential of human imagination to penetrate the laws of the physics and mathematics in order to control them and to blend them to satisfy the most improbable desires. Jorge Luis Borges said in his prologue to Carrroll's works that the english novelist has to be reminded basically for his virtue to create reasonable paradoxes, those ones we can experience only in the dreams realm. That one of Second Life, probably the most challenging mixture of role-playing game, sim multiplayer and fantasy e-commerce, has demonstrated finally that now every one could dream about his "alter-ego", a doppelganger or an alternative paradoxical reality where it's up to us to decide the amount of paradoxes and the depth and complexity of concrete unreality.
So why not project the collection of real oil on canvas of a real artist in a totally unreal dimension where art galleries are located inside esotic gardens and villages and people can met each other for an unreal vernissage? This is the attempt of my new exhibition. The irrational desires become virtual realities, a delightful paradox that express the essence of my art.
Join my next exhibition on Second Life inside The Muse Village in the Muse Art Gallery on 10 november.
More news very soon.

I'm writing this new romance since this july (even though I created its concept and the first lines of plot during springtime). Sometime new idea grows and floats out of my brain like a venomous butterlfy and the fingers were obliged to follow the hypnotic movements of its translucid and lisergic wings, translating their magical code in words and phrases which I never thought to write at that point of the narration. So when I read again and again the chapters I discovered that the plot is developing in something completely different from what I have imagined during the first vision of the world and its characters. Something more mystical, bizarre and thrilling that sometime I believe I'm just writing words like I'm painting on my canvases.
Despite the fear that the publisher house could refuse to publish it or that its deal will be just a cheaty mode to stole my idea without paying me, the weird power of my muse keep up my creativity.
This muse now lies very far from my native place: she has red, gentle hair like cold flames of an icelandic volcano, and her name means an unknown flower.

Every day I wonder how Italy could yet provide artists proud to create and to live here with its silly and tricky web of gallerists, editors, false promoters who are looking just for earning money without real interest in supporting art. Very distant are the times of great gallerists like Dalmau or Pierre Loeb, or collectors like Edward James, Caresse Crosby, Peggy Guggenheim, who promoted the avant-garde art at the beginning of 20th century.
They used to offer a deal to the artists for displaying and selling their artworks in their exhibitions, investing in publishing catalogue and organize press and art critics meetings. Nowadays the situation is totally distorted (at least in Italy). I received every day insane proposals to waste my money in exhibiting just one or two artworks in local art fair of city like Padova or Ferrara, paying 200 or more euro for each canvas displayed without no deal to sign and promising to the organization also a percentual of the potential selling. Often certain galleries located in Bologna and in Rome call me to offer a one week solo exhibition for the fool price of 2000 euro, without providing catalogues (they accept only artist with an already published port-folio with an art critic review, a paradox inside the paradox!).
I knew in person some of these greedy characters, enigmatic business-men with expensive cars and devilish smiles printed on their greasy faces who are able just to trick you with empty promises of solo display evaluating your artworks just according the size of canvases! The owner of a famous italian art magazine wrotes me that my art was without quality and my art will never be published or exhibited nowhere, but when I asked to his secretary if I could publish my advertising on its journal she answered that every artist could pay 9000 euro and be reviewed on its pages.
Nowadays, after all these frightening experiences, I can realize better the reason of the escaping of many great artists from Italy such as Tanino Liberatore, who was born in a small town near my house and moved to France more than twenty years ago. He said me he never regrets such decision.
If you want to survive in Italy with art it's better to you to try to become a beggar or an idiot or a guy with some esotic desease or be kidnapped hoping to attract the media attention: it's less expensive than try to exhibit somewhere.
Luckily I'm not a beggar, nor an idiot or a sick man, but an artist who believes in the value of his own idea and their power to pass over the boundaries of a single nation.
Good morning and keep up the nice work

Since the first time I was able to use a video cam about 10 years ago I tried to convert the cinematic idea I was developing in the pictorial codes always attempting to preserve the original "moral atmosphere" and the hallucinatory qualities of my paintings and writings.
Over the last few years I directed and produced a saga of shorts and movies based often on my own visionary realm, a parallel universe moulded on the real places and landscape of my birthplace where temporal warps, metamorphosis and supernatural events are the the unique rules of life.
A selection of trailers and video can be seen on my new and constantly updated channel called "The Atman Journey" you can visit to this link

I spent all this afternoon staring at my new canvas, painting the lapislazuline arches which will embrace the growing morphologies of two human entities. One of these bodies is already appeared on my large skecth book sheet like a flesh morbid plant, gazing at me with a silver eye floating between a thin space bewteen the architectonical gaps. Tomorrow morning I will try to define the other figure and to keep up the writing of my new romance, the sequel to the novel published this year by the italian publisher house liberodiscrivere.
I don't remember a summer more gloomy and desolated than this one. Road outside my studio is becoming a black river crowded by spectral arrows and ghosts of cats killed by cars.
Where is she now, the melancholic shadow fallen by the ancient hill during a windy twilight of september?
