I've been on DA for 3 years... and never really encountered any assholes. But then, I never really put myself out there. I only thumbshare in forum threads that look appropriate for my material and I rarely watch random deviants.

But I did. Just once. Very recently. I added someone new and she asked a question about Japan.

Japan, you say?! Well, I've got the low down on *that*.

Then I went and disagreed with one stereotypical opinion (that the Japanese are generally smarter and have more common sense than the rest of the world... absolutely not) and it sparked an explosion!

I wouldn't have cared about the Japan arguments. At all. You really can't tell me anything that I'm going to believe, seeing as I've been here for nearly five years.

However, calling my work "campy tourist photos" was a bit too much. Especially coming from someone with a load of abstract hipster art in their gallery. No thanks.

Maybe it's time for a scan through the watch list (I have far too many deviations to look at anyway) and a thinning of the herd. *sigh* I am just so annoyed right now. I don't think there's a single website out there that I can use anymore without it elevating my blood pressure.

(Translation: Long time no see, DA...)

I had been doing so well... so very well!

I had a college friend come and visit a few weeks back (well, a month ago, now, really) and before that, I was planning our travel like a mad woman. I am a plan-a-holic when it comes to traveling. I like to have a plan in mind for every hour of the day. Once we get to where we're going, if the plan changes according to mood, whim, fancy, etc, that's fine, but I like to have a plan, anyway, even if it's not followed to the letter.

SO, I was mad-planning, then mad-traveling, and since I got back, I've been mad-working. They gave me yet another school to go to this year (so now I visit four schools in a week and work with 18 teachers instead of three schools a week and a dozen teachers), I am teaching an adult class twice a week, and I'm looking into an online certificate course for Tourism Destination Management.

All in all, this means I have had NO time to get around to my photos from my trip with my friend (all 1,200 of them). I edited and framed three of them over the weekend, just as an exercise in Zen and relaxation, because adjusting contrast and levels is quite calming, but other than that, I've had no time to do anything!

I am doing my best to catch up on deviations (I watch too many people... or you are all far too prolific in posting... nearly 400 deviations on my watch page!) and I will comment when I can, favorite if I like, and try to be constructive where possible.

2008 may not be shaping up to be the best year ever, but it sure is a busy one.

It seems like I've been on DA for an absurdly long time to have less than 2,000 views, but my times of activity vs. inactivity are wide and varied (and mostly of the INactivity sort). Recently is the first time I've been really active on DA for more than a week or so at a time perhaps since I started here.

In other news, I recently got an email from a Japanese NPO that wants to use my photos as reward "goodies" in the form of wallpapers for people who donate to their organization. I would get nothing out of the deal other than credit, of course, but it still seems like a good thing, yes?

I've never had anyone ask to use my photography for anything before... so I'm being really weird about giving the okay for the whole thing. What do you think?

I finally decided that I like the look of matted photos better than unmatted, so I'm going through and matting all of my previous Deviations, as well as cleaning up my Gallery and getting rid of stuff that I don't find as appealing as I apparently must have when I first uploaded it.

Also... I've discovered the wonders of the Saturation and Contrast settings in PhotoShop. As I'm matting, I'm also editing all of my photos with little tweaks to make them more appealing to me. I am attracted to all things bright and contrasty, therefore I'm making my pics BRIGHTER and more CONTRASTY. Duh. :-P Seriously, though, my closet looks like someone ate a Skittles factory and then vomited, this is how much I adore the bright colors in life...

So, if you have a few free seconds in your time online... cruise around and check out the ones I've managed to finish and drop me a new comment or find a new favorite.

PS - The most popular pic in my gallery? Garden Bridge? I don't get it!!! :-P I love the picture, too, but I would never have pegged it to be the most popular. WEIRD. (Not that 6 people favoriting it is a huge deal, but still...)

Now, it seems that blockage has extended into my photographic life. I just looked through my photo folders from the last four months and found about four pictures (all from the same day) that are worthwhile as "artistic" things.

It's like I'm living a life high in creativity blocking cholesterol. Wouldn't surprise me, really.

There's also the fact that the lens on my digital camera ended up with a scratch on it back in June (at a beach BBQ, I think) and now the majority of my shots have an annoying out of focus black scar on them in one corner or another.
I definitely can't afford another new camera.

I was feeling artsy today... the weather put me in a good mood and the sun was gorgeous as it was setting... so I grabbed my film camera and drove to Lover's Point and took some old fashioned manual shots.

I always consider these my "artsy" shots. I LOVE some of the stuff I do with my digital.... and sometimes it turns out amazingly (at least in my mind).... but there's just something about my film camera that makes me deem it the artsy format, whereas my digi is my reliable point and shoot snapshot friend.

Does anyone else have that mental distinction? I think part of it is that I don't have a digital camera that gives me full manual control (over focus or aperture), so it sort of feels like there's less work involved in the whole process. Maybe if I had one of those $800 digital cameras, my files would feel as artsy as my film canisters.
