I've been very busy with work on a 3D animated "Ten Commandments" feature. It's straight to DVD, and is a collaboration between us, another singaporean company, and a new zealand animation studio. My job involves mostly modeling and texturing right now. Schedule's really hectic, so it means overtime work for me every week. 4- (instead of 6) character parties, too many meaningless filler characters (yeah, much more than the previous games), boring story, ugly main character who loves to wear shorts, LINEAR (as in one straight path) levels, overpowered runes (coughFalconcough), unrelated end-boss (where the hell did THAT come from??), poor opening sequence (I so missed Suiko 3's gorgeous animated opening, done by Studio Gonzo)...the list goes on and on.

Oh well...I think part of the fault lies in the producer, Junko Kawano. Much as I respect her taking on so many roles in the production of Suiko 4 (she's producer, chara designer, lead scriptwriter and even the friggin' motion-capture director ), I think more specialized people in some of her roles will improve the end result. I'm also a bit sad that she took over the role of chara designer from Fumi Ishikawa, who designed the characters for Suiko 2 & 3. Ishikawa is a stronger illustrator, and I certainly feel that her chara designs have much more charisma.

Bah..., now I'll try out Xenosaga 2. Possibly another disappointment, due to the absence of the previous composer, Yasunori Mitsuda, and also, the severe changes done to the original script co-writtened by Soraya Saga. Xeno fans may like to take a look at her homepage, Fridge [link] , where she talked a bit about leaving the production team of the Xenosaga series. Surprisingly, she's an accomplished artist too! I feel so sorry that she's not included in the new Xeno team. Damn Monolith Soft's management .

Fans of her writings may want to send her their encouragements (Saga is the co-writer of Xenosaga 1 and the great Xenogears). And experts predict dire after-effects. The amount of rotting corpses may cause severe outbreaks of disease that can affect people directly and also indirectly through livestock and fishes. Some fishermen near the affected regions are starting to be hurt by this, as many people, fearing contamination, aren't buying fishes for food anymore, thus threatening the livelihood of these already poor villagers.

The orphaned children and homeless women caused by this catastrophe are facing yet another danger. There have been reports of exploitation of these children and women; some of them sold to vice trades and even pedophiles. It seems unbelievable that there would be those who will add more misery to the survivors in order to feed their own perverted greed. But there are...

...I hope I can comment on even 10% of that.

Anyhows, I've been playing this PS2 RPG, Shin Megami Tensei 3: Nocturne (roughly translates to "Reincarnation of the True Goddess", and no, I don't know what "Nocturne" means...), and I find it quite refreshing. It's a hard RPG. That alone makes it worth playing when compared with most modern RPGs that you can complete with one eye closed and one leg tied to your neck.

The story premise is rather unusual too. Instead of the typical saving-the-world plot, the world here gets destroyed 30 minutes into the game. As you play, your hero will then learn about different characters trying to create a new world based on different "Reasons", i.e. philosophies. And your ending is supposed to reflect which of those philosophies your hero sides with as he goes through the game.

The art direction and designs are impressive as well. Characters have that distinctive Megaten look, and there are hundreds of monsters and demons that are visual coolness that you can recruit to fight on your side. I've nearly completed it, and will probably play a second time (on Hard mode, gasp!).

Just watched "I, Robot" recently. Really enjoyed the show. Hadn't expected that, because I can't quite imagine Will Smith (action star) in a movie based on Isaac Asimov's stories (little action).

Casual movie goer point-of-view:
Wow, a summer blockbuster Hollywood movie with (some) brains. Actually has interesting twists and turns. Great CG. Cool depiction of a future city and carpark (you'll get what I mean when you see it ) I didn't like the robot design at first, but the believable facial expressions saved it. I also love some of its imagery, especially the very last scene...I was actually touched(!). Some of the plotlines could have been handled better, though. The flashback scene and final revelation comes to mind.

Asimov fan point-of-view:
A bit of a disappointment. Asimov has a masterful grasp of logic and his robot stories tend to revolve around unexpected yet reasonable (on hindsight) interpretations of the deceptively straightforward robot laws. This film has very little of that. Another big disappointment is its depiction of Dr. Susan Calvin. She is the main character of the I, Robot book of short stories. A physically plain, but very intelligent robopsychologist, her original character is quite the opposite of the film's version. In the book, she is someone who has an indepth understanding of not just the Three Laws, but also of how the Laws can be bent or misinterpreted. In the movie, she's just another "dumb smart" scientist, who seems clueless 80% of the time. -_-#

Seeing how well "I, Robot" is doing in the box office, I suspect Hollywood producers will be thinking of making more Asimov books into films. The famous Foundation series would be an obvious choice. On one hand, i'll be very excited about a Foundation movie . On the other hand, I've a nagging feeling they might screw that up badly...

Right now, besides churning out 3D character models at work, I've to finished a digital painting by the end of this month. And I haven't even began painting it. Hmm, at least most of the penciling has been done...

I've still need to do the gift-paintings for and for the 200-view and 300-view hit respectively. I can only start on them after the end of April; my apologies for not been able to do them sooner. Gomen Nasai!!
