Hey.

So at this point I think it's been well over a year since my last update (yup, make that 15 months or so). That'd because I've been busy as all hell and most of my work is in web development now, nothing that is really suited to DA unfortunately.

Anyways, I have a brush request. Not a request that somebody create what I'm looking for, but that somebody link me to some similar ones should you happen to know of some - I've been searching for a while in all the usual places but I seem to be stuck.

What I'm looking or is a brush pack (or packs) of what I'd call retro floral patterns/elements, for lack of a better description - there are several web projects I'm working on that would benefit from this touch. One great example would be this Wordpress theme's imagery: [link]

That decorative line across the top is pretty much exactly what I'm looking for in a package with several others like it.

I'd love your help on this if you know of any packages of this type of brush - any suggestions would be awesome.

Maybe once I get this out of the way I can finally develop those six rolls of film that have been in my fridge for over a year, some back as far as Ireland that I never got around to developing.

I ordered the thing on ebay, in case I didn't mention that in my last entry/you haven't read it. It's a Minolta Scan Dual IV. It's taken my an hour or so to do the setup, installation, and to figure out the settings and such, but now I'm getting the hang of it.

Its maximum output is about 3200DPI, or 3120x4680. Outputs in TIFF for those large ones, or JPG for smaller ones. The largest output produces a file of about 80MB - I'm going to need another hard disk for sure.

Anyways, my point is - I have about 100 negatives to scan. A few of those will definitely be hitting my gallery, including some past ones that I only had 1500x1200 copies of (Kodak CD).

I'm heading into a busy few weeks with this scanning, building the website for this business, etc.

I've been busy and haven't been getting any film developed digitally - I ahve a bunch of stuff in negative sleeves, though, from the ICV program I'm in currently [and greatly enjoying]. I have a few quick things to say..

My neighbors, my very generous neighbors, have given me a Ricoh Multi-Program XR-P out of the blue with a 200mm Macro/zoom lense. It's georgous and works beautifully. That's the end of my problems operating my camera in the cold. Anyways, I'll be sure to get a roll of film I shoot in it developed soon. It might be developed without a CD, however, but that brings me to my next point.

The same people who gave me the camera have given me an idea for a small business. A lot of people, and I mean a lot, used film cameras (even if just point-and-shoot cameras) before digital and have hundreds, maybe thousands of negatives still left in the fronts of dozens of photo envelopes. Most don't know and ahve never thought of the possibility of digitalizing those negatives. My plan is to, basically, purchase a professional film scanner and make it possible for them - for a cost. Of course the scanner could run me anything between $200 and $1000, so there's an investment to be made. I think I'll be going for it, though, and I'll let you guys know how it goes.

So I probably won't be putting up too many pictures over the next few weeks just as I haven't for the past little bit. When I do get this scanner, though, I'll be scanning in hundreds of negatives and submitting the decent ones. I'll keep you posted.

Anyways.. While I was taking a break from my 'studying' today, out on my bike with my camera for the first time in a while, I think I got quite a few decent shots. It's been unseasonably warm for a while now - normally we'd be in 1/2 foot of snow or more by now, but it's rained far more than it's snowed this winter. Whatever. Anyways, today it was really mild and almost perfectly still. The local park was busier than I've ever seen it.. which doesn't mean mush, I suppose, it's usually soulless. So on the way into the park I noticed a woman on one of the small beaches with a camera shooting pictures of four swans right in front of her, drawn in by the presence os a human I suppose. I jealously moved along - maybe I'd get them later. I proceeded to take a few pictures of abnormally still water and suck, glistening due to the cloudless sky. I couldn't help but notice how many other photographers there were there - I must have seen at least ten in the hour I was there. Two, apparently an older couple, were sporting large tripods and at least $10,000 worth of equipment each (telefocals, digital SLRs, the works - plus whatever was in their bags).

On the way back home through the park, I came accross the four swans again - this time swimming along the shore to a couple in their early 20's. I decided to put my bike down and wait for them to come to me - and sure enough they did. I got as close as possible (which was surprisingly close) and got a good 5-8 shots in before the roll ran out. I didn't feel like messing with the rolls then and there, so I got back on my bike and went home.

I'll drop the film off tomorrow or Monday and, as usual, post them when I get them back.

I ran into exams. They're at the end of the month, and they're not going to allow me to do much of anything but study. Greeeat. I jsut remembered the last roll I shot, though, so I'll go revise the images right now and hopefully post one. Again, hopefully. Knowing me I'll get distracted by something shiny.

I'm going to be going to Queens University on a one-week program in May - I have to select one course to follow for that week, while staying on campus and stuff. I'm between computer sciences and photography. I'd really like to take photography, but it's digital as far as I know - not ideal for me, but then again selecting and preparing a subject is the same no matter what the camera. I'd also get to use lighting techniques and a huge array of equipment that I don't have access to otherwise.

Computer programming, on the other hand, is my near certain future - that next to web development and graphic design.

Actually, that brings me to another point (the chances of me getting to those photos is getting slimmer... haha). I've been talking to a lot of teachers and professionals about web and graphic design next to programming. As much as I love programming with Java and such, I also love creating websites. I love being able to get creative with coloring and graphics. Most programmers focus on the hard-core stuff, not the surphace. There are far too many web developers out there that are fluent in PHP, ASP, .NET, etc. but haven't got a solid base when it comes to design. For the designer, it's ideal to be able to develop the inner workings as well as the interface - that way they can have full control over the way things turn out, cosmetics-wise. I think the bottom line is that I have to be fully fluent in both - tThe problem is that it's rare that designa nd programming are fully laid out in university courses.

I guess I've got some searching to do.

If you're in the field of graphic and web design or programming or know somebody who is, please leave a comment (or email me at airborne_cow[+at+]sympatico.ca)! I'd really love to hear about your educational experience, even if you're still in college/university. It'd be greatly appreciated.
I'm working on a couple little brush sets right now.

Finally. I finished up the newest edition of my site last night, this time aiming for a portfolio appeal rather than a larger 'general' site. I'm looking into encorperating a rating system and fixing a couple of small Javascript bugs, but other than that it's pretty public.

It can be seen here. I'd greatly appreciate any comments/suggestions you may have.

Note: I'll be re-uploading the 'large' photos later today pre-fit to size so that they don't look grainy like they do now.

Note 2: If you see an image in my gallery that you would be interested in as a print, please either email me or leave a comment. I'll gladly make it available for you.

Once again, thank you everybody for your views and comments.

I've read up on exactly why we can't edit or delete our own comments on here, and it's a good explanation and reason (FAQ #160: Can I remove or delete comments on my userpage or deviations?) - But it still annoys me that I can't go back and correct errors in a previous comment of mine.

Listening to: Anatomy of your Enemy - Anti-Flag
Reading: The Creek - Jennifer Holm

I have a bad habbit of failing to read over comments before posting them, and another habbit of - well - caring when I make typos that aren't correctable. I'm just that kinda guy in some respects, given the way I hate it when people tipe lyke thsi.

I guess that's just my little rant, and I have to say, my only real problem with this site. That's pretty damn good, because I'm a little bit too picky when it comes to websites for my own good.

Anyways, I'm working on another brush pack and am sending some film in for processing tomorrow or Tuesday, you should see some more Devitations soon. Thanks, as usual, for the comments and favorites.

.. and fell off my chair.

*Edit: I don't mean the Nano. Check the link below, Apple has released a brand new iPod - The Fifth Generation.

Well I just happened to open up the apple.com/ipod page today while upgrading my iTunes version when I came accross.. Well. In all beauty, the fifth generation iPod. Call the video support unnecessary, as I micht sometime as well, but shit - it it ever awesome.

Now here's my plan. Having purchased my iPod about two months ago with a three-year extended warrenty, I've replaced the unit twice just because the headphones keep going. Apparently they can't give you only the headphones, so I'm fine with that. Anyways, soon after seeing the new unit, I called Best Buy of Canada and got my way into the extended warrenty line. The representative, after listening to my little situation, said that once the Best Buy location was out of stock of the old iPods, chances are they'd just give me a new model since they cost the same. So there it is - My impatience was redeemable. I can't wait to get my fingers on yet another beauty from Apple.

So there's my story. Bored yet? I go on.

I'm beginning to gain an interest in creating brush packages, as may be seen in my gallery (by the first package produced). I can't say whether or not I'll stick to this one or not, but we'll see. It's a bit tedious to make the type of brushes I enjoy using. When I'm bored, though, I do stupid things in Photoshop.

So there it is, my update for now.
Thanks for your continued support through comments.

Well I created this account ages ago.. Over a year ago, actually. Back then I wasn't really into photography, though, just graphic design in Photoshop. Now I've gained a huge appreciation for 35mm Photography. I still do a huge amount of graphic and web design along with photography. Soon I'll be releasing a new version of my site, including my devitations and raw photos along with my graphic work.

So anyways, now that I have the means of putting my prints into digital format, I hope to be posting new Devitations on here relatively daily. Your comments are appreciated.
