When I was still attending university, learning ND Graphic Design... my lecturers would sometimes give a warning or two about the grim realities of the designing field...

Being young and naive, I would ignore these warnings...

"That won't happen to me..."
"They won't be able to resist my designs..."
"Why wouldn't they accept my designs... I AM a full-fledged graphic designer, after all..."

Man.... was I wrong....

The graphic designer faced a new challenge, one they didn't teach him at the university...

Keeping everyone happy.

But not because of the graphic designer lacking the appropriate skills, oh no no no no... they use what they have learned through study, perception and countless hours of experience.... the problem lies with the ever-so-"knowledgeable"... client.

Some clients are too "knowledgeable" for their own good.
You wouldn't go to a mechanic and spent hours at his side, telling him to put the doo-hicky in the doo-dad, nor enter a docters office and start suggesting what he should cut off or presribe to fix the problem.
It just doesn't work that way with any other situation, so why would graphic design be any different.
Graphic designers use the best options for the right reasons to come up with the final design. Changing it because it doesn't look "flashy" or "pretty" doesn't make the client the best designer in the room.
In the end, we as graphic designers are merely trying to help.
We don't give a rats-ass if a clients "upgrades" to our design runs his business into the ground. In the end, all we have to do is keep the client happy to get paid.

So to make sure the client is getting his money's worth, it wouldn't kill him to listen to the graphic designers opinions first, would it?

To sum it up for any client who needs to use a graphic designer, here is a list of 20 things they need to understand beforehand.

#1 - Listen to the graphic designer. He knows what he's doing, at least more than you do. Listen to him and he'll listen to you.

#2 - A graphic designer has nothing against constructive input from a client. In fact, it's this communication between graphic designer and client is what produces the best designs.
When asking a client what he's looking for in his design, there's nothing a graphic designer hates more, than hearing a client say "you're the designer... YOU figure it out!"
We are not mind-readers.

#3 - On the other hand, don't be too demanding for your design. Let the designer explore his creativity. I mean, that IS why you went to one, isn't it?

#4 - Be nice to a designer, being nice costs nothing.
The nicer you are to the designer, the more effort he'll probably put into your design.
Be mean, however... and your company logo might end up subliminally resembling a male reproductive organ.

#5 - 'Eye-candy' is a term used by graphic designers.
As a client, you would want 'eye-candy', and a graphic designer would try to avoid the 'eye-candy'.
What is 'eye-candy' you ask?
All you need to know is, 'eye-candy' makes people go "Ohhhhh" for your design... then walk away, forgetting about it completely.

#6 - A graphic designer CAN design. Bringing in something you scribbled one morning in MS Paint and thought it looked cool isn't going to make our job easier, but thank you for the thought.
In fact, we will spend more time trying to SAVE your design more than anything else.

#7 - Even after this, if you still want to use your own design, bring them in a format that most graphic design application can recognize. A PDF is a great example of one such graphic design application format.
Microsoft Word, on the other hand, is NOT a great example of a graphic design application format, nor is Microsoft Powerpoint or Microsoft Excel. Using the various borders and wingdings provided by these programs do NOT make you a graphic designer.

#8 - Do not bring your designs on a stiffy disc... the stiffy is dead... let it go...

#9 - If you find a nice image you want in your design off the internet, chances are it's about as big as a matchbook when printed.
Vectors are, in most cases, better than jpegs... for obvious reasons
While your jpeg design looked great on the PC screen, the end result on your A0 printout is pixels the size of hubcaps.

#10 - You can assist a graphic designer by giving him notes of your ideas or information that's required on the design.
If these 'notes' happen to be a J.K. Rowling napkin note, that looked like it was written by a spastic doctor writing with his eyeballs, then it won't help at all.
Even spell-checkers have their limits.

#11 - Graphic designers can only do so m...

Yeah... I've been gone quite a while....

It all started when the work laptop one of my family members use suddenly decided it didn't like it's hard-drive anymore..... so it *poofed*

It took frikkin 2 months for them to replace it...

And when I could finally use it... it had so many admin locks on it... I couldn't do jack!

And while I was cursing the great beyond, my mom suggested I get my own PC... brand spanking new...

So yeah... that what I'm busy typing on here....

Some updates from when I last posted....

By birthday was great.... I got hit in the eye with a piece of ice....

Holidays was cool.... was never in one place very long.... very adventurous

Got a job straight outta the holidays.... I now work at a cozy little business card company.... it's very chill... but they work me to the bone for next to nothing...

I got pretty addicted to games recently.... now that I have a PC that can handle most modern ones and money to buy them...

I failed to do any of the art projects I listed.... sorry...

In the past couple of months... I've drawn absolutely nothing for myself!.... nada!... siltch!
I just don't have the time anymore...

I'm so tired after work.... all I wanna do when I get home is play a little bit of games and rest...

So yeah.... the bottom line is.... I'm all outta motivation when it comes to art.... and I need help getting some more...

Anybody interested to help me...?

Okay... so moving along...

Uni has officially ended for me... this week is prolly my last week there... and it doesn't involve any work actually... just a training course in Adobe Illustrator... so I'm just going in there for a free lesson (Illustrator has it's cool points )
But after that, I'm done...

I've had so much free time lately, it's wierd...
A few weeks ago I was rushing like hell to get my last project done... it was INTENSE! (People cried... honest to God!, they cried from the stress!!!)

But now I'm sitting here... wasting the time away...
Which... after some thinking while I wasted time... made me remember why I was so excited about the holidays...

It gave me a chance to catch up on some MUST NEEDED drawing!
It feels like I haven't had a chance to draw something personally for ages... and hundreds of new ideas have been keeping me up at night... so this holiday got me really psyked!

I've got and artistic holiday planned out for myself... now... if I'm only as energetic as I hope to be I can achieve most of what I want to draw...

Here's whats on the drawing/creating/doing list...
CONGRATS JACOBUS!!! HAPPY BIRTDAY MAN!!!

*does the "it's your birthday... it's your birthday... you're another year older... you're closer to death..." dance*

Please wish him a happy b-day people...

His party was awesome!!!
It was a medievil themed party and man... was it great!
His parents arranged everything... and not even he knew what immense amount of effort they did until we saw it a day before the party...
There was:

Costumes for those who didn't have any
Weapons and shields on the walls
A banquet table with medievil cutlery
A throne (for him... the 'king' )
Banners, emblems, torches est.
A gazelle on a spit (we call it springbok here )
A whole bunch of chickens on another spit
Enough vegetables, bread and desserts to feed an army
Gazelle skins as floor mats
Bardic music in the background
And my personal favourite... LOTS OF BOOZE! (I especially like the giant jugs of wine and punch they had )

I went as a crazy barbarian... complete with fake chainmail, leather tunic, custom made pauldron, heavy boots, braided hair, mean-ass beard, warpaint, pewter mug and DOUBLE-EDGED AXE AS BIG AS I AM!!!

Yeah... it was a crazy night...
Thanx once again for the great time, Jacobus!!!

On another note... I'll be unable to post, comment, crit or discuss anything for the next week or two...
(This is so crap... I haven't even been on DA for a full week and already I have to ask for some away time...)

It'a because I'm currently busy with a hecticly tough project... were ordered to make a flash-based portfolio... aaaand... I kinda wasted too much time before jumping head-long into doing it...

Not to mention some other things that keep me from drawing...

Like a project I have to touch up...
A couple of redo's...
A bussiness project...
And touching up a little project that's going to Tokyo for a storybook illustration compotition.

So yeah... sorry about that in advanced...
I'll see if I can get back on track as soon as possible...

But I'll leave you with a little something I saw on 's journal, entitled "HOW BAD ARE YOU" (reffering to me, though)
I found this really funny and interresting...

Now I can finally see how IMMENSLY TOUGH AND RUGGED I AM!!! YAY!

Here we go!

1) Smoked weed or cigs: Nope... and never will
2) Consumed alcohol: Heh... yeah...
3) Slept in the same bed with someone of the opposite sex: After puberty... no...
