I'M SO SICK OF THE FRICKIN' ROMANCE MOVIES.

I just came home from one, and dammit.

I just had a hunk of dough, and the weather (a continuos, foggy clump of cloud that is breaching the sunlight and is pissing me the hell off) has left me in a broody discontent- I'm afraid I don't feel much like ranting. Perhaps this is best for you- but I'm going to post the rant to accompany this in a following journal.

ANYWAY!

More to the point, I'm going to have to wtach some sort of action movie, and, since I dunno where my copy of Live Free or Die Hard is- a more direct, head-tearing, skin-searing, bloody take on action, I'm going to watch LOTR [I am, of course, obsessed with LOTR, but I need some action RIGHT AWAY- I guess I'll just skip to Pelennor Fields or something, eh? ^^]

It's the only thing that helps in this sort of situation- I need a heartless adrenaline rush to get out the froofiness.

Essentially: Cyrano de Bergerac is about the perfect man: Honorable, daring, brave, radical, a genius in poetry and plays and philosophy and science, with one tragic flaw:

And guess what? Lucky for him, he's in love with Roxanna.

The most beautiful (Cyrano also makes other cases for her virtues, but I don't like her, so that's all I'm listing here) women in court (she's also his cousin, but Cyrano was a man of just-before-the-renaissance! So... yeah.).

Poor Obi-Wan. Episode I must have SUCKED for him.

I mean, not only is he nearly not-there, but he gets to be neglected by Qui-Gon the whole frickin' movie.

Imagine that you're ripped from your family at a supreamly young age for Jedi training; you've got to be extreamly close to your master, right? Obi-wan is basically raised by Qui-Gon, and then what does he do?

The whole movie he was OBSESSED with Anakin, no WONDER Obi-Wan was pissed when Jin wanted him in the order. His ONLY FATHER FIGURE is trading him in for a boy who is not only too old, but much more powerful then Obi-wan (he is, after all, the chosen one).

And THEN?

When Qui-Gon's dying, does he tell Obi-Wan that he was like his son? That he cared about him and is proud to be his master?

"Train the boy, Obi-Wan. You must train the boy."

WHAT?!?!?!

...

But he trains to boy anyway, and has to put up with THIS for all of episode II:

And then, finally, here comes Episode III, and you think "Oh, well, Obi-Wan and Ani are bestfriends now! Surley, NOW he can be happy."

Errr.

Because just after him and his ex-padawan start getting along, he has to go and kill him.

And wait 17 years for Luke to grow up and, before he can do anything cool, DIE. With only ONE lightsaber swing.

But, don't worry, Obi-wan! You still get to stalk LUKE the rest of your life!

Alright, kids! Can you tell me what Christmas is about?

Well, it really depends on who you're asking.

For example:

The media: PRESENTS. BUY THINGS, CHILDREN! CONSUME, CONSUME!
The decencies: Family! And Friends! And warm toasty things on spits!
Dictionary: The birth of Jesus Christ.
Fact: It's confusing.

I'm not saying that Christmas isn't about Jesus or family or- yes- presents. I'm saying that it didn't happen the way we all see on our nifty little Hallmark Cards.

For one thing, assuming that you're Christian, Catholic, et cetera, and go for this kind of thing, Jesus was probably born in the summer or spring- the time most likely thousands of people would trek somewhere else to pay taxes. Because, let's face it: the monarch who says "Pick up, mortals, and go to where you where born NOW. Even though it's freezing." is going to get walloped by the people. And even if he was born in the winter, there was probably little to no snow involved. 1 AD Bethlehem wasn't big on the whole "mass amounts of snow thing." I don't pretend to be an expert in ancient climates, but from what I've heard, it's pretty hot, even in the winter. And huge pines? I don't think so.

So how did all this stuff get jumbled together? Well, basically: the church mutilated the actual facts to get more followers. The whole "lights on a Christmas tree" is actually a Pagan thing, and that's where we get the whole "winter" thing from. The same thing goes for Easter- a Pagan sun God. They did this to ease the Pagans into their religion, since fighting a war over God with them wasn't the first thing they felt like trying.

And Santa? Saint Nicholas was indeed a saint, but as for the whole "riding around in sleighs and perusing about the world (even though that legend is AWESOME and I love it)"- it's frankly not Church material. In fact, if some saint said that he was flying around on deer and breaking into the houses of small children with little non-human workers, he'd be thrown out of the order. If not burned at the stake.

But yeah. I just felt like spading out that information to everybody. Because I'm a spaz.

Oh! And another thing.

I hate what the media's doing to poor Christmas.

Like I said before, today Christmas isn't really a religious holiday- some people go to mass, but I've got jewish and atheist friends who celebrate it anyway. I'm totally behind this notion: embracing other religions and spending time with your family can never go astray (and what kind of person says "no" to presents?), but I don't like what other people are making of it.

Today I went to Forever 21 (against my free will, might I add), and they were playing Christmas music. But not your "We Three Kings" or "God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen," but a rapper's version of... something. I couldn't even tell which song it was supposed to be.

But here's the chorus:

"Cars, diamonds, shopping for things-
that's what Christmas means to me
A new X-boxx and a some gold bling-

And the next song? Destiny Child's version of 12 days of Christmas. IT was basically the same, except it had nothing to do with true love and it was- eh... let's just say I wouldn't want my little cousins listening to it. Dirty.

And it kept up this trend, the only relief an alternative band's 12 Days of Christmas, which, at least, wasn't totally disgusting.

Now, I know that a lot of modern musicians make a Christmas song like this and think "Oh, nobody will take this bad-message seriously. Because what kind of person is that materialistic based off a song? They'll all know Christmas is really about family and stuff."

But a lot of them don't figure this out. Because music, television, movies, in other words, pop culture, is a lot of kids' world, you know? Lots of kids listen to the media instead of their parents, and even though they say that they know it's wrong and that they're not that materialistic, it's still the world they have to live in and it's still the law they live bye. It's no coincidence that more and more kids get pregnant too young: it's society, and it shows that it's got an effect on us.

Well... yeah. Poor Christmas.
