REPKA!!! Only with a slight hint of that word alone comes to mind of one of metal’s most intricate cover artists. Edward J. Repka is perhaps as some would respectably call him “The overlord of thrash metal cover art”. Which, he wears that title ever so proudly that very few cover artists within the vast realm of one of the most dedicated forms of music that is metal (with Dan Seagrave (the vicious mastermind of old school death metal cover art such as Entombed “Left Hand Path” (1989), Nocturnus “The Key” (1990), Dismember “Like An Ever Flowing Stream” (1991), and Malevolent Creation “Retribution” (1992) coming in at a close second). He’s been to Hell and back or to better put it, “To thrash and back!”

Ablest or most of the time when the average old school headbanger from hell thinks of Edward J. Repka, the glory days of Bay Area (Sanfrancisco, California) thrash metal (circa 1985-1989) come to mind. Well, I’m sure long hair, beer, Reebok or Nike hi tops, bullet belts, denim jackets with the sleeves ripped off of them, patches, pins, fingerless leather gloves, leather jackets, Venom “Welcome To Hell” t-shirts one size too small, stove pipe denim jeans, stage diving, and insane brutal beatings from being in the pit come to mind too. Anyway, Edward J. Repka has brought forth many famous creations such as for the highly and worldly renowned Megadeth (as created by Megadeth front man/guitarist Dave Mustaine) mascot known as Vic Rattlehead and he has done two versions of the Dark Angel logo. He also does work for Universal Studios and has appeared at several comic book art conventions. As far as place of birth, date of birth, pictures of Repka, and family history, that information is completely unknown and kept secret due to artist’s rights. Trust me, I have a book on Repka and still do not know what he looks like. Only those that have met him, know him, and worked with him knows what he looks like!

As far as what this man of great artistic proportions has created, the list is endless. Cover art that Repka has created are works such as Death “Scream Bloody Gore” (1987 Combat Records/Under One Flag), Death “Leprosy” (1988 Combat Records/Under One Flag), Death “Spiritual Healing” (Combat Records/Under One Flag), the Dark Angel logo for “Darkness Descends” (1986 Combat Records), the Dark Angel logo for “Leave Scars” (1989 Combat Records), the Dark Angel logo for “Live Scars” (1990 Combat Records), the Dark Angel logo for “Time Does Not Heal” (1991 Combat Records), Massacre “From Beyond” (1991 Earache Records), Massacre “Inhuman Condition EP” (1992 Earache Records), Evildead “Annihilation Of Civilization” (1989 Steamhammer Records), Evildead “The Underworld” (1991 Steamhammer Records), Merciless Death (U.S.) “Evil In The Night” (2007 Heavy Artillery Records), Eliminator “Breaking The Wheel” (2008 Suffering Jesus Records), Municipal Waste “Hazardous Mutation” (2005 Earache Records), Toxik “World Circus” (1988 Roadrunner Records), and Toxik “Think This” (1989 Roadrunner Records). The list could go on and on but for the record, the results are longer than the alphabet.

As much of the previous aforementioned Dark Angel talk, it’s time to hit the gears into thrash overdrive! For the legendary old school Downey, California thrashers Dark Angel (nicknamed “The L.A. Caffeine Machine” for their crushing/in your face power and speed (hence their motto “Too Fast My Ass!!!” that was used during the era of Don Doty (DFA’s first vocalist) and more highly referred to as Dark ‘fuckin Angel by their fans), Repka designed their logo for their now critically acclaimed 1986 sophomore effort “Darkness Descends”. He then later revamped the logo as requested by the band. The revamped Dark Angel logo was used on their third record “Leave Scars” (1989), their first and only live album “Live Scars” (1990), and for their final, most successful, and most musically complex record “Time Does Not Heal” (1991). Many of their long time fans and younger fans hold the DFA logo in high respects due to its originality. Many bands over the decade have tried to emulate the logo but none can come as close to what Repka designed for DFA: an excellent piece of true metal art.

Repka’s most famous and most known work (or works) would be that of the cover art for once highly thought of (they’re kind of overrated now days but not as overly overrated as Metallica in my view) old school thrashers Megadeth. Repka’s span with Megadeth starts from their 1985 debut (the re-issued version) of “Killing Is My Business…And Business is good!” to their 1990 and most successful record “Rust in Peace”. I have an online college course and sent my teacher the wrong document. First, Word erased my original paper that I spent eighteen hours on. I ended up getting the right document to my teacher though. The funny thing was the document I accidentally sent was one of my stories for English that had a lot of homosexual scenes in it (you can write about that stuff in college). That was so embarrassing it's like sending your teacher your porn stash by mistake.

Well, ever since I injured my index finger and my middle finger on my right hand, I just can't play as good as I used to. It hurts to play now. I could use a pick but I get crap from "professional know it all douchbags" for doing so. Back in the day, 4 strings where primarily all that existed and no one cared if you used a pick as long as you knew how to play. Bass guitars originally had pick guards back in the late 50's and early 60's. THEY WHERE THERE FOR A REASON YOU MUSICALLY PICKY ASSHOLES (referring to so called "music critics"!) Hell, I get crap for "not having big enough hands or calluses" and "being too skinny". Jeff Becerra of Possessed was skinny as hell back in the day and he played bass with his fingers. What has happened to the bass world? I'm sticking to what I know best and that's vocals. Ok, play your classical mainline shit but I bet you can't do a loud as can be Chuck Billy (TestAmenT) growl, do a high pitched falsetto scream at about F4 or F5 or even sing at all! Yes, I took music classes in high school and took them very seriously but I'm sick of these so called "music experts" that have something negative to say about every playing style of every musical instrument on God's green earth!

I've tried going to several churches (yes, I said church...it's my life so fuck off!). Father Pat at out local Catholic Church was very accepting of me but I dropped out because everytime I went, all I could think of is "thou shoult not slep with another man" over and over. My mother and my sisters all support me but I refuse to accept myself. If I could go back in time and take that part out of Leveticus, I would do so. I don't know. Sometimes I blame my mother for the way I am and sometimes I blame yaoi (FUCKING JAPAN ARRRGH!!). My other fear besides going to hell is that someone in the metal community will murder me or kick my ass just for being gay. Look what Emperor's drummer did to one of their fans that was homosexual. I'd give anything to be like the rest of you guys. I would even give up my music and my life of metal forever just to be a breeder(straight). I just hope to one day run into someone that can change my veiws. I can't do it on my own (I've reall tried). Well, I gotta get to sleep guys.

Cannibal Corpse 1989 demo. "Skull Full Of Maggotts" is what got them their record deal. Just ask Brian Slagel and he'll tell ya. Chris Barnes voice sounds very Jeff Becerra (Possessed) like (or like the vocal styles of Sadus, Kreator, or The Accused) and that's a good thing. Long gone are the glory days of CC but not to be forgotten in the hearts and minds of many. For me, an icon of the past. Don't get me wrong, George is good but as far as vocals on CC stuff from their 1990 debut "Eaten Back to Life" to "The Bleeding" (1994), I prefer Barnes vocals. For me, George sounded better in Monstrosity ("Imperial Doom" (1992) and "Millennium" (1996). That's my opinion though. I feel I'm one of the few young fans that's mature and intellegent when comparing vocalists. Everybody else likes to go on pointless and rediculous arguments about who sucks and who dosn't. I should have been born in 1970. This is not my time period. More than half of the metallers I hang out with are in their 30's or older. I've seen and gotten some cool shit that you won't get with kids my age. Jimmpan and a few others are the only metallers I've seen on the internet that's around my age that know's what they're talking about when it comes to metal. Cannibal Corpse "Eats Mosscow Alive" (live in Mosscow 1993). I transferred this from my VHS copy. Very few of the vhs copys are left. A must for old school Death Metal enthuseists and collectors alike. This is during their "Tomb Of The Mutilated" tour which included 40 dates with Obituary and their "The End Complete" tour. Ahh...the early 90's. Enjoy!

Also, check out their 1988 debut "Malleus Maleficarum". Pestilence has also reformed this year. Damn, this sure is a good year for metal. First Toxik reforms then Pestilence. I wonder if Sarcofago will reform? Sometimes, you can never know.
