Aug. 20 – 26, 2009 - By: Wasel Safwan
</sup>
To go and buy a ticket to perform Umrah and visit the city of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) is just a great step in ones life. During my trip to Makkah and Madinah, I learnt a lot and turned out to be, a memorable trip that won’t be forgotten in my life time.
On 20th Aug 09, my neighbour Dr. Deen Mirza and I, started our journey towards Makkah, flying from Sharjah to Jeddah. At this moment of time, we have three things to do before performing Umrah, these being:

To wear the ihram, this is a two-piece white seamless garment, that covers the upper and lower parts of your body. It makes us all equal, rich or poor from any nationality or from any part of the world – with this garment accompanied with a pair of simple sandals, all are gathered as equals with single purpose in mindÂ

Reaching Miqat , one of six stations that the Prophet Mohammed (PBUH) have set up around Makkah, so that anyone coming from anywhere in the world will pass one of these stations . In our case as we were flying we had to be ready in our ihram as the plane flew over one of the Miqats.

At the point when one passes the Miqat we do the Niyyah (make intention) which is, saying “Here I am, O Allah, for Umrah”. When we do the Niyyah, while wearing ihram, we are not allowed to do many things, such as: not allow cutting our hair, trim our nails, use soap or shampoo, no sex with your wife, no perfumes and no killing of animals or insects. At that moment forget about your business and studies, and just focus about your relationship with God. Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) used to have shower and put the best perfumes he has before doing the wearing of the ihram. When we gave the intention (Niyyah), we have to keep raising our voices in saying: “Here I am, O Allah, here I am. Here I am, You have no partner, here I am. Verily all praise and blessings are Yours, and all sovereignty, You have no partner”. And many words from your heart such as “Here I am, O God of Truth”, we keep raising the voices till we see Ka’aba.

In our case we did all of the above at the announcement from the pilot. We arrived at Jeddah about midnight. We stayed in Jeddah at Dr. Taqwa, a friend of Dr. Deen, waiting for Dr. Deen’s parents to be arrived from London, also to perform Umrah.
After a good night sleep and a breakfast we said goodbye to Dr. Taqwa and his family for their kind hospitality and made our way to Makkah. After checking in at a hotel, we left for our Friday prayer in Ka’aba. Entering Ka’aba is like entering any mosque, which is to enter by your right foot first and saying: “In the name of Allah, and blessings and peace be upon the Messenger of Allah. O Allah, forgive me my sins and open to me the gates of Your mercy. I seek refuge with Allah the Almighty and in His noble Countenance and His eternal power from the accursed Satan”, the feeling was amazing, to see the Ka’aba in front of your eyes is a big mercy from God. It is a totally different experience compared to watching it on TV or seeing it on a big photo in an art exhibition. Now to continue the process of Umrah, I had to go to the ‘Black stone’, which is in the eastern corner of the Ka’aba – Ka’aba was the house of Adam (PBUH) and then rebuilt by Prophet Ibrahim (PBUH) & his son Ismail (PBUH), the four corners of the Ka’aba roughly face the four cardinal directions of the compass, Ka’aba means cube - scientists believe the black stone’s material is not available on this planet and so they discovered it is a star from the universe, and Prophet Muhammad (PBUH ) said that the stone was white like snow, but people’s sins made it black. Black stone is always crowded, I had to kiss it to go ahead but if one is unable to reach there one is to point to it by right hand toward it and saying: Allah is The Biggest. Before I start this point I have to change the position of my ihram, which means I have to uncover the right shoulder and then I go ahead to the Black Stone. After that I have to do seven circumambulate around Ka’aba which is called Tawaaf, when we reach the third corner, which is before the Black Stone corner called Yemeni corner, I have to say: “Our Lord! Give us in this world that which is good and in the Hereafter that which is good, and save us from the torment of the Fire” then I will approach the Black Stone, and kiss it or point at it, I do this step for seven times then I recover my right shoulder. During my walk, I can recite any prayers and ask anything from Allah, for the first...

Jalal Luqman and I stayed in Brioni Hotel, Stodolni Street. Jalal was great companion on this trip, we shared and discovered a lot of things together. We are young but felt even younger; we wanted to enjoy our days and we did.

On the next day we wore our national dress to attend the press conference at the Vitkovice building, and on the following day we were on the first page of the local newspaper, I guess no one wore UAE national dress in Ostrava before. Ostrava is an industrial city which was full of smoke and hard place for living, but for the last 20 years, they have closed 85% of the factories and today they have plans to stand for the European Capital of Culture in 2015. Mr. Jan Svĕtlík, chairman of Vitkovice, was so kind to us, his main single floor office was full of artworks from Czech, Japan, China, and many more, testimony to his passion for art.

Each morning Lukaš Ryška come to the hotel to pick us up to go to the factory, we had to paint by enamel on steel sheets for a week, even in the factory we had great time, I still can hear the laughter of artist Aleš Lamr. Marcella Kubalova worked hard in introducing us to her country, without her we would not have discovered those places. Marcela introduced us to the people of the city, her friends, and there is nothing in her dictionary called impossible, she always had solutions and great ideas. When we first arrived in Vienna, going through the green to Ostrava, we were enjoying such a lovely greenery, beautiful designs of farmhouses, big farms colored yellow, dark green and sometimes white trees, some places the houses were tied to each other; for me this was a big difference between where I live in Al Ain and here. I came from a dry region, desert dunes by God and here it is green by God, but have completely different aesthetics. They filled windows with flower boxes to avoid the insects coming into the houses and we use fly-net on windows to avoid the insects coming into the houses too. We have dunes of soft sands in the edges of the road, but there I saw snow and some of it is melting on the edges of the road. It was my first time to see snow at Pustevny.

Next we went to Štramberk, this city is full of love and peace, about 3000 people live here. We were walking on a road that was level with the roof of the timbered houses to one side. Where ever you looked, you saw mountains and green farms with small unique collection of timbered houses. Watching the sunset from Trúba tower was amazing, you saw pink to purple colors over the roofs of the timbered houses, a wide horizontal view from the top where the farms, the mountains and the houses were visible and all looked like getting ready to go to sleep at the sunset soon after another beautiful day.

April 30, we went to Wallachia region (Valašsko) the name is exonym from Romanian shephered migrants from 14th C. The houses had small doors similar to what we have in heritage houses of Al Ain, white interior walls too, these houses were about 200 to 500 years old, such as the Mayor’s house from 17th century. I had a delicious Wallachian sweet dish where I sat to create my first drawing in Wallachia. The new timbered houses, take about two years to completely dry, because when you finish building the houses, the wood is still alive, which means the whole house is growing which leaves gaps at windows and the door areas.

First of May, morning at Ostrava in Vitkovice factory, we went to the top of the factory mine tower, Hollywood once made movies here. It is an 180 years old factory, 400 hectare in area with some 8000 people working there.

At 1:27pm, the train moved to Prague, the Bohemian region. In UAE we always hear about the good things that Sh. Zayed did for the community, similarly, there I could hear about King Charles VI having done things for his people. He built the fundamental forms during his era in the 14th century that people still use. It was due to him that Prague now has the oldest university, the Charles University founded in 1347. This city is totally different than any other place I have seen till now, in Ostrava you only see local people, but here it is more multi cultural and you hear many languages being spoken too. We stayed at Crystal Palace hotel, and spent all our time walking and discovering the city, I was inspired by the buildings they have, each building had a story to tell, very beautiful. The gothic ar...

UAE – Syria - Turkey
June 1 – 22

Today I am posting another story, which I title Al ‘ain to Istanbul.

All of a sudden, I have decided to make a journey to a travel agency office and plan what would be an all-inspiring trip from June 1st till 22nd, visiting Syria , to Damascus and finally setting camp in Turkey, a overall distance of more than 8500 km.

The trip started from Al ‘ain city, moved to Dubai where I took a flight to Damascus, from there I moved to Emessa “Hims city” by bus. The next day I went back to Damascus and we had nice tour discovering the old city, the mosque of Ommayed. There I saw tombs of Prophet Yihya PBUH and I discovered that the area was inhabitated mostly by Persian people. Even when I went to the bazaar around the mosque the Arabs spoke Persian. At the old bazzar “Hamidiya” I saw tomb of companion Abu Hurayra – radiya allahu anhu – where I prayed Duhur+Asr . This was a very small mosque.
Few days later I moved to Aleppo, where I met my friend and brother Bashar. I stayed at his house for one night and it was pleasure to see his sons. I had a delicious Aleppo’s lunch and dinner; I won’t forget these days, also there I could saw the tomb of Zakariya PBUH.

On the morning of June 6th, 2008, I moved to Antakya in Turkey by bus, I had my first Friday prayer in Turkey. I started moving to Istanbul which is about 800 km northwards. As the journey progressed northwards the scenery became greener with beautiful green and yellow colours. The journey took me through the Taurus mountains , the views were amazing, the clouds in close proximity around you with mountain peaks and minarets of the mosques stood in sharp contrast to the natural background – the view seemed like as if one was in an airplane.

The weather was amazing and I kept meeting new friends on each place I moved to. On next day, I reached Bolu, which is before Istanbul and the temperature here was 13 degrees. Few hours later I reached Istanbul early in the morning, it was raining. I left my bag at the hotel and went out for a walk in the city without a map. I had not come across anyone who could speak English or Arabic. It all seemed unfamiliar, passing by old houses, till I reached Eminönü. I saw the Marmara Sea and there were people fishing from the bridge. This district’s population rises to 2 million during the day time and at night it becomes a very quite area with around 30 thousand residents.

Eminönü means “in front of justice”, I guess it is the heart and soul of Istanbul city. In Istanbul I had amazing times; I visited the Istanbul Modern Art Museum, this had nice artworks to look at. I also visited many of the mosques & heritage buildings that belonged to the Byzantine and Ottoman age, such as Aya Sophia. This is a huge building formed from intricate domed geometrical elements and I wondered how they were able to build these elements above each other rising to the dome at the top. The Diameter of this is 31.2 meter and height from floor level is 55.6 meter.

Architect Sinan resorted to use of pendentives with massive piers at the corners for transferring of the load of the dome to the ground. This allowed for formation of large space at the same time gave the space weightless aesthetical quality. There is more to see and learn by eyes than any words can describe. Sultan Ahmad Mosque which competes with Aya Sophia took 17 years to be build starting from August 1609 by architect Sedefhar Aga. The emperor Sultan Ahmad could not see it built fully during his period and his reign did not lead to any noble victories and this failure reminds me of recent times where we build huge but remain dis-united.

Eminönü Mosque which is close to Marmara Sea faces a large open space where people gather and walk. I met a gentleman called Abdul Jaleel at this mosque, he took me to Fatih area where I was surprised to meet people who were so gentle and were very good Muslims mashallah, they give respect to women in the street and they all appreciated each other. All the youth had a beard, they slept after Eisha prayer and woke up for Fajr to pray to start a new day, in the path of the Prophet Muhammed PBUH. I guess it is more Islamic than some of the other areas I have seen on this trip. I took Meswak from ADNOC station in Al Ain and decided that for every mosque I prayed in I will give the Imam a Meswak from UAE.

I loved eating the fresh fish they hunted in front of you at the Mermara, and eating the Shells, Kastana and Cherry. Also I went to Istiklal street which is busy 24/7 visited by many tourists. It is full of cafes, bookstores and restaurants.
Gum. A sticky liquid exuded by certain tress and shrubs, various types of which have been used as painting media from ancient times.

Gum is the normal medium of watercolour paints and pastel, and since it readily emulsifies with oil it had long been a medium in *tempera.

Gum arabic, obatained from a species of acacia, the best from Sudan and Senegal, is the variety most favoured.

Tempera. Term originally applied to any paint in which the pigment is dissolved in water and mixed (tempered) with an organic gum or glue, but now generally confined to the most common form of medium - egg tempera.

Egg tempera, was the most important technique for panel painting in Europe from the beginning of 13th cent. to the end of the 15th cent., when it began to give way to oil painting.

The egg-yolk was used chiefly for painting executed on wood panels. The panel was first prepared with a ground and priming. The whole design was then drawn in with charcoal, the excess charcoal was dusted away, and the outlines and parts of the shading were painted with watercolour. If the background was to be in gold, its outlines were incised in the gesso ground, and some of the contours of the design were incised also. Ang gilding was completed first; next came the painting of the drapery, architecture, and other parts. The flesh parts were painted last and often had an under-painting of green earth pigment called terre verte. Other parts too might be under-painted in order to enhance or subdue the colour.

The grinding of the pigments in egg-yolk was ofcourse done beforehand. The yellowness of the egg had little effect on the colours. The paint was not easy to handle, and the colours were few and difficult to blend. So the variety and subtlety that were so often attained depended on a slow building-up process.

___________________

The Oxford Dictionary of Art, Pages: 252 & 552

This is one of the nicest mails I have recieved.
<sub>
What Happens in Heaven...........
I dreamt that I went to Heaven and an angel was showing me around. We walked side-by-side inside a large workroom filled with angels. My angel guide stopped in front of the first section and said, "This is the Receiving Section. Here, all petitions to God said in prayer are
received." I looked around in this area, and it was terribly busy with so many angels sorting out petitions written on voluminous paper sheets and scraps from people all over the world.

Then we moved on down a long corridor until we reached the second section. The angel then said to me, "This is the Packaging and Delivery Section. Here, the graces and blessings the people asked for are processed and delivered to the living persons who asked for them."
I noticed again how busy it was there. There were many angels working hard at that station, since so many blessings had been requested and were being packaged for delivery to Earth.

Finally at the farthest end of the long corridor we stopped at the door of a very small station. To my great surprise, only one angel was seated there, idly doing nothing. "This is the Acknowledgment Section," my angel friend quietly admitted to me. He seemed embarrassed "How is it that? There's no work going on here?" I asked. "So sad," the angel sighed. "After people receive the blessings that they asked for, very few send back acknowledgments.

"How does one acknowledge God's blessings?" I asked. "Simple," the angel answered. "Just say, "Thank you, God." "What blessings should they acknowledge?" I asked. "If you have food in the refrigerator, clothes on your back, a roof overhead and a place to sleep you are richer than 75% of this world. "If you have money in the
bank, in your wallet, and spare change in a dish, you are among the top 8% of the world's wealthy.

"And if you get this on your own computer, you are part of the 1% in the world who has that opportunity." Also ..... "If you woke up this morning
with more health than illness ........ you are more blessed than the many who will not even survive this day.
"If you have never experienced the fear in battle, the loneliness of imprisonment, the agony of torture, or the pangs of starvation ...... you are ahead of 700 million people in the world.

"If you can attend a prayer meeting without the fear of harassment, arrest, torture or death you are envied by, and more blessed than, three billion people in the world.
"If your parents are still alive and still married .. you are very rare.

If you can hold your head up and smile, you are not the norm, you're unique to all those in doubt and despair."
Ok, what now? How can I start?

During Eid, me and family have stayed in Sharjah and later passed by Dubai then back home to Al Ain.

Sometimes you need the brush to not paint on boards, you need to look at people and see how they live, what they need, and respect everyone who you face. If you did not have free mind to analyze things by your own, then how can you develop your mind, typing quotes is good only when it does produce actions.

When I buy book to read, would I do what it says or just look into myself again and say: "oh woow .. ohh woow" and would that develop my brain to score up actions or to produce similar ideas again? I was picturing the sunset view, and I told my brother to have a look at what I shot, he replied: "Why it does look nicer on the screen?"

If you kept talking about the same thing all the times, you will be surrounded by the same thing later. As if you like Rap you will have friends who like Rap too, and if you like politics you will have friends who like politics and so on as love, cars, religion, poems, dance, food, perfumes, etc. Have a walk at any mall, look around you, they all have same talent "lips speaking" but all have different idea "eyes staring" and all have stories behind them "backgrounds", but does it happen to you once that you look at someone and say "How is it like to live like what they do?".

It is true we share the same planet, but we do not live same world. There is a lot of worlds living together now, you and me here reading this journal and thinking together to judge of its positive and nigative views.. that is world. Another world .. can be anywhere else, maybe those who are praying to Allah at snow mountains and follow their own believes, that is another world. Somewhere else like China, they live and work hard and they dunno about you and me now, and the snow mountain, that is another world. The "Country of world" can get bigger and smaller, depends on its brain.

When I went to pray laylatu el-qadr at the mosque, I was shocked that the mosque was more than full from both genders, that even felt someothers who were praying with us too. I was thankful to Allah, me personally prayed at the open-corridor and sub7ana Allah, He give beauty and relaxation from any place u find! Coz when the heart got an aim, aesthetics will turn on.

When I turn t.v. to watch prayers at Mecca or Madina, and watch the huge number of prayers praying at the same time, same line, same aim, same move... look from far when they all do one sojood, they look like snow clouds, like white river. The artistic touch from million prayers done by one touch!

That even no one told them to go, no one obligate them to do, but they all go coz they fear who created the clouds without colums; the One.

A reminder that we are now in the last 10 nights of Ramadan. A a short reminder of Laylut il Qadr and an extract of a translation of a lecture by Amr Khalid:

Firstly, why was it called Laylat al Qadr? Qadr is something which has high
value. When the Arabs say that such and such has the level of Qadr,
then they mean that he is of a very high degree. As the verse says "Do just
estimate of Allah" [Qur'an: A'raf]. Look at how important its value is
that it is repeated 3 times in the chapter "We have indeed revealed this
(message) in the Night of Power"

Where did the night get this high degree from? From the revelation of
the Qur'an to the Prophet (PBUH) which happened on this day. The light came
down on this night, and this is one of the 10 days we are in now. Another
thing is that everything which describes the Qur'an is a characteristic of
this night. The Qur'an is an enlightenment and mercy on the believers. This
Qur'an is light, then so is this night. The Qur'an is a remedy, then in
this night people will be cured, they will be affected by the light of this
night, and they will be enlightened and forgiven. So whoever reaches
this night will get these characteristics, as if you will be an embodiment
of the Qur'an.

"And what will explain to thee what the Night of Power is?" The reward
and the importance of this day, is above your mind's capability to
understand! I want you to feel this night; do you know what this night is all about?

Why else? Because this is the night that everyone's blessings are
valued.
All these people's blessings will be valued based on this night. So if
you spend this night in worshipping Allah, then this is a good sign for
your blessings. The blessings are sent down on this night, so the angels
write them down and then start going through the world on this night. Your
future blessings, your heaven, your hell, everything is decided for the next
year on this night. "We sent it down during a blessed night for We (ever)
wish to warn (against Evil)" [Qur'an: Dukhan] what is "Affair of wisdom"? His
wise choice in the management from year to year is in this night. See how
valued it is?

I wonder how the angels will find you on this night. Will they find you
on your way to the mosque or will you be in a daze? What will they be
doing? They will be walking around the people praying for their forgiveness.
All of this for this poor nation who don't realize how valuable it is to
Allah! When you know that these angels are coming down to pray for your
forgiveness, do you not feel shame, wanting Allah to choose you?
Imagine these angels coming down. Will they also pray for forgiveness for those
who are sinning? Yes, even them!

Not just the angels but Gabriel will come down again, because his main
responsibility is to come down because it's his anniversary of this day
when he came down to the Prophet. I wonder who the happiest of Allah's
creations will be on this night! So Allah will honour him with his coming down on
this night to look for the Qur'an on this earth. Beware you don't forget the
Qur'an in these 10 days for the whole point is about it.

The Rewards

We've started now in the last 10 days. Look at the reward in it:

 - " The Night of Power is better than a thousand Months " . Look
how important this verse is! Better than 1000 months i.e. more than 84
years, so around the life-span of a human. So it's as if your 2 prostrations on
this night means your link to Allah is as if it has been like this for your
whole life. Imagine how many rewards! So as if the kiss on your parent's hand
tonight, or the tear from your eye, or the money you are giving to
charity on this day, the religious lessons, it's as if you were doing this all
of your whole life.

As said in a Prophetic saying, whoever prays on this night out of
faith, will have his sins erased. Another Prophetic saying states that whoever
prays on this night, remembering Allah, Allah (SWT) will forgive the
believer and erase all his sins.

Your supplications and prayers will surely be answered.
