When he first came to us he was shy, tending to avoid the other dogs as well as us. Eventually he opened up more, even playing with the other dogs!

Finally, another golden retriever owner (whom also takes their dog to our daycare) decided to adopt Gold. Things looked great, Gold was an awesome dog and it seemed finally would get a good home.

When the new owner came to take home Gold, as they were loading him into the car, Gold managed to jump out and run away. He can be a bit finicky, so when he ran, he didn't come back. As most of you know, chasing would be futile, it would make him run even further.

I felt bad for Gold but hoped for the best. He's a golden retriever after all, maybe someone would find him and if they don't return him maybe they'd keep him for a Christmas present. Sadly, this was not to be the case.

Gold was found today on PCH, a busy street. He was not all in one piece anymore, parts of his body looked like they had been dragged for several feet. His eyes were not completely in their sockets anymore, he was gone. Adding insult to injury, as fellow staff members were getting ready to pick up his body, a pickup truck came by and just ran over him again.

Gold was a great dog who was about to go home...but it seems that wasn't meant to be so. I feel so bad for him, he was so close to having a home again. He was at our daycare for 1-2 months and was a pleasure to have around, he didn't bother anybody. The rest of the staff and I are really saddened by this...I just can't believe that he's gone, and what cruel and stupid bastards there are in the world.

We miss and love you, Gold.

In the evening we set up the traps, went to dinner then came back and checked them at night. We got around 2 kangaroo rats and some other various pocket mice, kept each species in a different hampster type cage, then re-set the traps for the night. We checked them again in the morning and got a few more.

I had a really great time and got closer to people in my class, the crazy bunch.

I'm not sure if I'll have much photos up lately, I'll be unable to make most adoption events now that I'm working on Saturdays. I would take pictures at work but I'd be doing exactly that, working. Plus I don't think they would be too happy that I'm not keeping an eye on all the dogs. =P

Other then that I've been pretty much playing Fallout 3 and trying to keep up with the Animals Rule Facebook, its gotten pretty popular =P. I have a Flickr and RedBubble account, but its hard to juggle so many. Plus I get lazy and distracted.

I REALLY need to play Guild Wars more often and work on my titles, GW2 OMG!

Sorry to bombard your inboxes with pictures of cute puppies. Oh, what ever shall I do to make up to you! =P Oh wait...that's what you get for watching me. Bwahahaha...

Anyway, the puppies (Rex and Paris) are not on the website yet because the person who usually uploads them is on vacation, but another volunteer is supposed to have them on sometime this week (hopefully). That's right, the puppies are up for grabs! Or pre-adoption at least, and they'll go home with you when they turn of age.

Vegas was HOT. Like 110F hot. Turning 18 in vegas was nice, I could look around at all the hot guys and think, "Woohoo, I'm legal now!" Vegas makes you think strange thoughts, yes. :nod:

I couldn't help it...I bought my dog a shirt that said, "Someone who loves me bought this shirt in Las Vegas" or something cheesy like that. I kept looking for things to buy for her since I felt bad for having to leave her with my grandparents for 4 days =X

Kinda sucks now though, I had fun in Vegas and was away from all the normal stresses of life, but now its all back again. But at least I have mah doggie!

A Letter from a Shelter Manager:

As a shelter manager, I am going to share a little insight with you all ...a view from the inside, if you will.

First off, all of you breeders/sellers should be made to work in the "back" of an animal shelter for just one day. ONE DAY!

Maybe if you saw the life drain from these sad, lost, & confused eyes, you would change your mind about breeding and selling to people you don't even know. That puppy you just sold will most likely end up in my shelter when it's not a cute little puppy anymore.

So how would you feel if you knew that there's a 90% chance that dog will never walk out of the shelter where it's going to be dumped? Purebred or not ...about 50% of all of the dogs that are "owner surrenders" or "strays" are purebred dogs!

"We're moving and can't take our dog (or cat)." Really?!

"The dog got bigger than we thought it would." How big did you think a German Shepherd would get?

They always tell me, "we just don't want to have to stress about finding a place for her. We know she'll get adopted, she's a good dog."

Odds are your pet won't get adopted. How stressful do you think it is to be dumped at a shelter? Well, let me tell you, your pet has 72 hours to find a new family from the moment you drop it off. Sometimes a little longer if the shelter isn't full and your dog manages to stay completely healthy. If it sniffles, it dies.

Your pet will be confined to a small run/kennel in a room with about 25 other barking or crying animals. It will have to relieve itself where it eats and sleeps. It will be depressed and it will cry constantly for the family that abandoned it.

If your pet is lucky, I will have enough volunteers in that day to take him/her for a walk. If I don't, your pet won't get any attention besides having a bowl of food slid under the kennel door and the waste sprayed out of it's pen with a high-powered hose.

If your dog is big, black or any of the "Bully" breeds (Pit Bull, Rottie, Mastiff, etc) it was pretty much dead when you walked through the front door. Those dogs just don't get adopted. It doesn't matter how 'sweet' or 'well behaved' they are. If your dog doesn't get adopted within it's 72 hours and the shelter is full, it will be destroyed. If the shelter isn't full and your dog is good enough, and of a desirable enough breed it may get a stay of execution, but not for long. Most dogs get very kennel protective after about a week and are destroyed for showing aggression. Even the sweetest dogs will turn in this environment.

Here's a little Euthanasia 101 for those of you that have never witnessed a perfectly healthy, scared animal being "put-down." First, your pet will be taken from its kennel on a leash. They always look like they think they are going for a walk ...happy, wagging their tails ...until they get to "The Room." Every one of them freaks out and puts the brakes on when they get to the door. It must smell like death or they can feel the sad souls that are left in there. It's strange, but it happens with every one of them. Your dog or cat will be restrained, held down by 1 or 2 vet techs depending on their size and how freaked out they are. Then a euthanasia tech or a vet will start the process. They will find a vein in the front leg and inject a lethal dose of the "pink stuff". Hopefully your pet doesn't panic from being restrained and jerk. I've seen needles tear out of a leg and been covered with the resulting blood & deafened by the yelps and screams. They all don't just "go to sleep," sometimes they spasm for a while, gasp for air and defecate on themselves. When it all ends, your pet's corpse will be stacked like firewood in a large freezer in the back ...with all of the other animals killed that day ...waiting to be picked up like garbage.

Between 9 and 11 MILLION animals die every year in shelters and only you can stop it. I do my best to save every life I can but rescues are always full, and there are more animals coming in everyday than there are homes.

My point to all of this: DON'T BREED OR BUY WHILE SHELTER PETS DIE.

I hope someone will walk into my shelter and say "I saw this and it made me want to adopt."

Thanks goes to my Aunty Verna for driving us everywhere on the big island, and to my Uncle Dave for showing me a last tree of its kind in the wild, and for educating me on the native wildlife. I also thank my grandparents Amantiad for letting me stay with them and for letting me take pictures of their Azaleas, and a big thank you to the rest of my family that constantly asked me about my pictures and encouraged me.

I hope everyone viewing enjoys these photographs as much as I did while shooting them. I will try to upload all ASAP, but I'll be multi-tasking since I'm re-connecting with people again. Mahalo!
