Summer '09:
After graduating in May I went straight into an internship at the “Oceans of Fun” facility located in the Milwaukee County Zoo. “Oceans of Fun” is a year-round seal and sea lion facility. Over the summer it was home to one Atlantic harbor seal and four California sea lions. I stayed as a volunteer until the end of September. I also got scuba certified over the summer.

Fall '09:
In November I attended a week-long conference for the International Marine Animal Trainers’ Association (IMATA). It was in Atlanta, Georgia, it was a blast. I got to spend one of those days with the wonderful at the Georgia Aquarium. She’s awesome person and photographer, go check out her gallery if you are not familiar with her!

Winter/Spring '10:
I applied for the winter/spring marine mammal internship at the Shedd Aquarium in Chicago and I did get accepted! The internship lasts from January to mid-June.

Second of all, an update on life.

I'm am in my senior year of college, I will be graduating in May, I can't believe that is coming up so soon. I spent last summer doing research on copepods in Newport, Oregon and I presented my research a tri-beta (BBB) regional conference. BBB is a biology honors society. I won first place for oral presentations, and my friend Kat won third place. I get a grant to present at the national conference next May in Colorado.

Thirdly I HAVE AN INTERNSHIP THIS SUMMER!!!

I'm really excited about interning at the Oceans of Fun in the Milwaukee County Zoo this summer. It's unpaid, but of course there aren't many paying opportunities that give you animal experience. My friend and I both got it, so we are pretty excited to be spending our time working around sea lions this summer. Hopefully this is my foot into the door for what I want to do with my life. Some of my professors have expressed that they feel I'm selling myself short, they want to see me go to graduate school. I may go eventually, I don't see why I have to go right now. I don't quite understand why they aren't happy for me because this internship is giving me the opportunity to do what I've been wanting since I started college, and why I chose to get a Biology degree. Anyway, in the end, it is my life, and I'm excited about the internship.

I'm happy to be done with Genetics and Human Anatomy & Physiology classes-not easy, and I've still manged to keep a 4.0 somehow.

This semester I'll be taking an Animal Behavior course, I'm very excited about taking that class. I will also be taking Ecology, Organic Chemistry II to start on picking up a chemistry minor, and I have a research class where I will have to write a proposal for a research project by the end of the semester...yikes.

This past November I made a trip to Indianapolis with my friend Ashley to attend a one day seminar on animal training by Ken Ramirez for the IMATA conference. Yeah, that was awesome and exhausting.

Over break I saw Phantom of the Opera in Chicago at the Cadillac Palace...very cool.

As far as artwork, well I had hoped to get a lot of stuff started/done over Christmas break, but I didn't. I guess I'm more inspired when I'm busy and don't have time to be artistic . I did start another digital painting in Photoshop. I chose one of OrcaAmbition's pictures (I have permission). I hope to surprise her, unless she really wants to know which one I chose . I'm probably halfway done with it. Currently I'm just working on details, shading, background and stuff .

Funny how things change, I was suppose to be going to Tennessee for college, but it turns out I'm staying right here in Illinois. I'm going to Monmouth College, it's a private college about 3 hours from me. I'm planning to go for a Biology Degree, however, when I played my flute for the music director suggested a double-major. I love playing my flute, but I don't know if I'm good enough to go for a Major. I'll just have to wait and see what happens.

I'm working on a group orca drawing. It's probably gonna take a while for me to finish. I'm also working a people drawing Oo yea, I know. I have one person done, and I need to start the other one. And I still have to do a drawing for Tillikum.

1-I did an IMEA audition on my flute for the state band...

2-Marching band season is almost at end. One more game and one big competition to go!

3-Still don't know for sure if I'll be making another trip back to SWF, but good news; mom got her good camera fixed

4-I almost got the boxed cd soundtrack set for the
Star Wars Trilogy .....we ordered it through Borders and when it arrived, the box was all smashed up
... so we made them order another one. It should be in w/in the next week.

5- To Tillikum: I have finally picked the picture of Tilly I'm going to do for you. And have started an out line of it. Art I, yes, my 1st high school art class. Please don't wonder why I've waited so long to take an art class. Let's just say I'm stubborn. The teachers seems really nice though, and I showed her a few of my drawings and she said she sees me getting an easy A+ in her class. And for the next 3 months I'll have 3 intense months of marching band. So I tried to submit a few new things. One thing I still haven't figured out is why my deviations get so big. The Wed. the week before we left my brother's friend, who's a pilot, came over. Mom asked him if it was possible for us to get some stand-by tickets to Orlando for the week of June 21. We didn't hear from him until Mon. the 21 and then he called and told us we were set to go on the 1st flight out on Wed. June 23. Well, on Tues. I went to lunch w/my aunt and Mom calls us saying that only one stand-by went through, and to purchase a ticket for the next day to Orlando would cost about $300. I left the decision up to her, she bought it and we ended up going. We bought a fun card and we spent Wed. Thurs. and Friday at Sea World. I hadn't been there since July of 1999. I wish I could have stayed longer. We did a 4:45pm Dine w/Shamu on Thursday. The "Shamu" they used for our dinner was Tilly. He's so beautiful. We got a seat right next to the slide-out, so I got 2 nice pictures of Tilly. Sea World was so much fun though. The Shamu night show was awesome. Actually the show sort of got cancelled for us Friday night. You could tell the trainers were communicating to each other and trying to get all the cool water tricks done, but it was lightning and thundering and it didn't pass, so they had to cancel it. Takara and Kohana were so cute, they're so playful! I saw them at the close-up on Wed. I didn't get any pictures of that though because Mom's good camera wasn't working. Actually, we didn't get to use it at all. It's sort of a long story, but Dad mistakened the battery thing for something else and he exposed the film that was in there. Mom wasn't too happy, but anyway when we went to use the camera, it just didn't work. It didn't let us take pictures and we couldn't figure out what was wrong w/it. We ended up buying 3 highly overpriced outdoor disposable cameras. I get my pictures back tomorrow; I'm praying especially that the pictures I took at the close-up turned out. ]]> ~AquaOrca
