Hey guys,

My old SBux store is taking part in the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life. [link]

They could really, really use a boost in donations, so I'm putting out a call for original art cards ( [link] ) to use as giveaways. I haven't worked out all the logistics quite yet, but I'm thinking that every donation of $5 (or more) will get the donor a randomly chosen art card. Maybe with a $50 donation and they can choose a specific artist.

All they have to do is email me a screencap/confirmation of their donation and I'll pick one of you guys to send them a card.

Are any of you interested in helping out? Do you know anyone else who might be interested? On the altruistic side, it's all for a good cause. On a slightly less altruistic note, it will help us beat a certain rival store, the manager of which has reputedly been "encouraging" her baristas to give up their tips as donations.

Please, email me and let me know if you can spare a little Bristol and do up a card or two.

Thank you!

I just wasted an entire (and not inexpensive) pack of inkjet printable shrinky-dink sheets. For the benefit of others, my findings:

-The colors aren't reliable. You have to lighten them up dramatically because the shrinking process concentrates them. And the testing process to get the right balance wastes a lot.

-It won't hold regular shapes. You can cut them into a regular shape (say, a rectangle) but you will still end with a distinctly irregular finished product.

-Printing displacement was a problem. I stacked my images six up on a sheet (landscape oriented.) I did my print preview and checked my margins. That should have been sufficient. However, if I didn't remember to choose "center image on page" every time, the whole thing would not only skew to one corner, but would crop the entire group so that NONE of the images were viable.

All in all, WASTE OF MONEY.

Better to do my two dozen keychains individually. Yes, it will take more time, but it will also be a whole lot less frustrating.

For a limited time, submissions are now open at GirlAMatic. [link]

GAM Submission Guidelines This submission window is open from October 6th through November 5th, 2007. (Not to be open again until April 2008.)

1. Look at what's already on GAM.
There’s plenty to see that will give you an idea of what we’re looking for and what we usually publish. GAM is kindly disposed towards good manga and Oni-like comics, but we’re not tied to a single visual style. We are looking for comics with well-defined characters, a good story to tell and with appeal to either young adult or adult women.

2. BEFORE YOU SEND ME YOUR PITCH, read How To Write a Book Proposal, by Michael Larsen.
While it is geared towards non-fiction proposals, it does teach everything you need to know about crafting a readable proposal. I can't say for sure I'd know if someone HASN'T read this when they pitch, but I sure can tell who HAS. What I DON’T want to see is your entire story written out in a single-spaced block in email. Have mercy. Write your proposal and put it up as a web page, or send it as an attached .rtf or Word file.

3. Email me at gam.editor@gmail.com, subject line "GAM: (title)", otherwise my spam filters will eat it. To this address, send me the URL of your comic or sample pages and proposal.

4. Do NOT tell me your proposal isn't your best work.
If it isn’t, why should I look at it? If you usually do things like use "u" for "you", "4" for "four" and "LOL" for punctuation, DO NOT when you write me. I expect to see a command of conventional English. Also, sell yourself without resorting to emoticons. They are for casual correspondence, which a professional proposal most certainly is not.

5. Show me that you already know how to put a comic/images online.
I want to see clean presentation (which means learning how to use an image editing program to take out grays from scans), good lettering (many decent free fonts available at blambot.com, so there's no excuse for lettering in Times New Roman).

6. You MUST be at least 18 years old to work for GirlAMatic.

7. It might take a while to look at your comic and write a response. Please be patient.

8. It's alright to feel disappointed if I decide your comic isn't right for GAM.
Honestly, no one enjoys rejection. But being bitter about it in public will not dispose me kindly to future submissions, and there’s no reason not to submit again.

9. I thank you for submitting, whatever my final answer.

10. Only a bribe big enough to send my kids to private school will be considered, and you can set yourself up for that.

And finally, please note that GAM is changing its format.
GAM is free and non-exclusive, giving the creators the freedom to publish elsewhere online and the ability (for now) to sell banner ads on their pages and manage their own income from same. The Salon is soon to be extinct. Eventually, we will have a new business model that will do away with the need for ads entirely, while still allowing creators to earn money from their work.

All members of GirlAMatic are expected to maintain a level of professionalism.
This means updating when you are scheduled to and keeping your readers (and editor) apprised of any changes and down time.

GirlAMatic is also a community, a family. We talk to each other online and meet up at conventions whenever possible. We have fun with each other’s series during crossover events and ride to the rescue when one of our number needs assistance. If that sounds like something you’d enjoy being a part of, then send us your work!

I look forward to reading it.

Thinking of dumping my DA page.

I've already let my subscription lapse and I haven't put anything up here in months. I have the Women's Work gallery, my personal website and (if it comes down to it) my WebComics Nation account, so this empty ol' page seems kind of superfluous. And it's not like I can't track my friends on LJ and their various websites anyway.

Hmm... Methinks it's time to clear out some rubbish.

The ToS is still an issue with me, the possibility of one's work making money for DA when it isn't making money for you still looms. But thanks to DivaLea, there is a way around all that: WATERMARK EVERYTHING.

Simple yet brilliant!

Armed with this idea I will now contemplate what to do with this here gallery. It is, after all, a valuable resource for getting one's work seen, questionable ToS notwithstanding. Hmm... ponder...

I've just re-read Deviant Art's Terms of Service. I don't like them. Maybe I just missed it when I signed up, or maybe it's new, but there are some pretty broad liberties in there. Liberties that benefit DA entirely and allow them MORE than fair use of YOUR artwork.

It stinks, especially when one considers what they're already getting in terms of subscription income. But subscription or free account, no one, NO ONE should ever have free reign to use, alter and/or sublicense work that does not belong to them.

This is bullshit and should not go unchallenged. I have, therefore, purged my gallery. I will be telling anybody and everybody not to tolerate DA's ToS, until DA either changes them or kicks me to the virtual curb.

I've spent so much time writing, editing and conducting sculpting experiments that I've had no time to draw. I feel kinda naked.
