SETI

SETI is the acronym for Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence, organized efforts by humans to detect intelligent aliens. A number of efforts with "SETI" in the project name have been organized, including projects funded by the United States Government. The generic approach of SETI projects is to survey the sky to detect the existence of transmissions from a civilization on a distant planet. (This approach is not science fiction.)

There are great challenges in searching across the sky to detect a first transmission that can be characterised as intelligent, since its direction, spectrum and method of communication are all unknown beforehand. SETI projects necessarily make assumptions to narrow the search, and thus no exhaustive search has so far been conducted.

SETI@home is a highly successful distributed computing project that was launched by U.C. Berkeley in May 1999, and is heavily sponsored by The Planetary Society. Any individual can become involved with SETI research by downloading and running the SETI@home software package, which then runs signal analysis on a "work unit" of data recorded from the central 2.5 MHz wide band of the SERENDIP IV instrument. The results are then automatically reported back to UC Berkeley. Over 5 million computer users in more than 200 countries have signed up for SETI@home and have collectively contributed over 19 billion hours of computer processing time.

In distant and magical territories of Peru, inhabits the tribe of chamas. Like other primitive tribes, Chamas have old and wonderful legend to explain the phenomena of the Nature and the reason of the Universe. One of those legends explains the origin of the day and night.

According to Chamas, the God Habi had two children: Bari, God of the Sun, and Use, Goddess of the Moon.

Bari was young a strong one, of blond curly hair and skin golden like the honey. He was glad and rebellious and he had an overflowing vitality. He always walked inventing pranks and it enjoyed like a boy doing to rage to his sister.

On the contrary, Use was a fragile, languid girl, of an extraordinary pallor, and beautiful and delicate like a beautiful white rose.

A warm day of summer, the beautiful Use went to bathe to a calm transparent water lake. To the dusk, the white goddess seated to the border of the lake and she was entertained contemplating the divine image of her face that reflected crystalline waters. Use enjoyed, finally, of moments of peace in the burning day but of that implacable summer.

Bari, that meanwhile was taking a walk by the environs, discovered to his dear sister watching herself in waters of the lake and, at that precise moment, he decided to spend one of his frequent jokes to her. Grease the hands with the dark resin of a tree and went away secretly approaching to Use, that, backs to Bari, continued engrossed before waters. When he arrives until her, Bari rub the black palms of his hands in the white face of Use. The face of the goddess stayed as stained by soot and, to borders of the lake, between the amused outbursts of laughter of her brother, the waters gave back an ugly image and dull of the face of Use.

When seeing herself thus, the beautiful goddess broke to cry very eartbrokenly. The God Bari regreted immediately of which he had done.

- Pardon me, loved Use, myself will wash your precious face - ashamed Bari stammered.

- Out from me! You have offended me as nobody has done it!! Leave me! - said Use while she rejected all offers of her brother.

- Don't cry. I beg that you excuse to me. - Bari insisted.

- You will not return to see me! - shouted Use.

And the goddess, in a fleeting flight, ascended to skies between the stupor of his afflicted brother.

Since then, Use, the goddess of the Moon, goes out always at night, when Bari, the God of the Sun, already has been hidden.

It also counts the legend that Use feels desires sometimes to see her brother and, for that reason, some very clear days, we can see the Moon and the Sun together in the sky, although only during moments.

Margarita, is beautiful the sea, and the wind
brings subtle essence of orange blossom;
I feel in my heart a skylark sing.
Margarita, I am going to tell you a story.

"There was a king who had a palace of diamonds,
a shop made of the day and a herd of elephants.

A kiosk of malachite, a large cloak of material,
and a charming/graceful little princess,
as pretty, Margarita, as pretty as you.

One afternoon the princess saw a star appear;
the princess was naughty and wanted to go and
collect it.

She wanted it to have it decorate a brooch,
with a poem and a pearl, a feather and a flower.

The adorable princesses
Much resemble you:
they cut lilies, they cut roses, they cut asters.
So it is.

Then went the beautiful little girl
below the sky and over the sea,
to cut the white star that made her sigh.

And followed the way above,
past the moon and more there more than bad for
her to go without the permission of papa.

Once she had returned from the parks of the Lord,
was seen all around a sweet/soft brilliance.

And the king said,"What have you done?
I searched for you and did not find you.
And what do you have in your breast
that we see lit up in you?'

The princess did not lie
And so she spoke the truth:
I went to cut my star of the blue immensity.

And the king cried" "Have I not told you
That in the blue there are things not touch?
What an error! what a caprice!
The Lord is going to be angry.

And said she: "I did not mean to,
I went, I don't know why,
through the waves and the wind
I went to the star and I cut it.

And the father said, angered:
"A punishment you have to undergo;
return to the sky and what you stole
you are now going to return."

The princess grows sad for her sweet flower of light
when there appears smiling the good Jesus.

And so says, "In my fields that rose I offered to you;
they are my flowers of the children
that in sleeping they think of me.

Dressed the king in brilliant clothes,
and then has parade four hundred elephants
on the shores of the sea.

The little princess is beautiful
Now that she already has the brooch
In which shines, with the star,
Poem, pearl, feather and flower.

Margarita, beautiful is the sea, and the wind
carries a subtle essence of orange blossom:
your breath.

Since far from me you are going to be,
keep, little girl, a gentle thought
that one day I wanted to tell you
a story.
