So the end of a rather interesting summer vacation is at hand once more.
I was able to go out of the country and accomplish some art, so that makes it one of the better vacations.

There are some reasons why this vacation was nasty, but eh, you don't want to hear that.

My laptop is mostly fixed. It still BSODs, but I've been able to narrow down the culprits, and its overheating problem has been fixed. To those with laptops---VACUUM your air intakes and exhaust vents. Thank God for a dad who knows how to fix things the easy way.

Anyway, I've been running a Dungeons & Dragons campaign over the summer. Needless to say it's been a lot more rewarding to have 6-hour sessions compared to the pathetic 1.5 hour sessions I used to have during the school year. At this rate, I don't suffer from withdrawal when I go for a week or two without it.

Anyway, as I've been drawing female humans a lot lately, I've decided to try my hand at illustrating the hobgoblins that figure so prominently in the Red Hand of Doom adventure I'm running.

D&D hobgoblins are typically slightly taller and more muscular than humans, have skin ranging from a deep yellow tan to red, have flat, dark noses (think dog noses but without the long snout), and wide mouths. They also have mobile, canine ears. Most of the depictions thus make them look like people with bulldog-like heads.
[link]

Their bigger cousins, the bugbears, are 7.5-8 feet tall, with massive, burly frames, large, stiffer ears, and black noses that add up to an overall ursine appearace.
[link]

Finally, the classic D&D goblins. They're half the height of humans, have almost no noses, and are small and skinny.
[link]

Of the five Wyrmlords of the Red Hand Horde, three are hobgoblins, one is a goblin, and one is a bugbear. All of them except the goblin have charisma higher than the average human's (the goblin has Charisma equal to that of a human). This might mean that they at least have the ability to make themselves look presentable, and that they shouldn't be hideous by any stretch of the imagination.

As such, I made the following embellishments to the designs when I drew them:
Hobgoblins:
-Taller and burlier than humans, and prone to have more body hair. They have thick, flaring eyebrows in both genders.
-While they have wide mouths, sharp teeth and protruding tusks, their jaws are not underslung (that's an orc trait). They have prominent cheekbones and high foreheads, because they're at least as smart as humans.
-They like braids and dreadlocks, or at least tie their long hair in one way or another.
-Clothing is functional, protective, and almost always incorporates armor plates in one way or another.
-As omnivores who lean toward meat, they slaughter a lot of animals for food. This leaves them a lot of leather. Which they like wearing.
-There's a lot of variety in weaponry. Grunts typically hold curved, bladed weapons similar to the Japanese wakizashi, katana and nodachi, but generals sometimes wield enormous straight greatswords with jagged edges and notched tips. Those who prefer blunt weapons avoid the stereotypically dwarf warhammer and go for large, two-handed flails.

Goblins:
-For creatures that spend a lot of time in subterranean areas, I'd think noses are at least important. Having giant holes on your face seems to me like a very unsafe physical trait for goblins. As such, I draw them now with the same black nose that hobgoblins and bugbears have.
-They like wearing their hair long and loose, unlike their larger cousins. At most they're going to tie them into ponytails, but dreadlocks and braids are too time-consuming for them.
-Their heads look a bit squashed and flat and have large, triangular ears. The overall look is slightly short of a gremlin.
-Flaring eyebrows too.
-They typically move in a hunched posture and tend to walk on the balls of their feet instead of their heels. While hobgoblins like being completely covered, goblins at the very least keep their feet bare. This is representative of their natural stealth ability.
-Since they're usually not front-line warriors, goblins use their natural riding ability and their natural bond with the wolflike Worgs to quickly skirmish with composite bows.

Bugbears:
-Pretty much the same. They're the most barbaric of the three major goblinoid races and have naturally tough hides, so they tend to dispense with armor.
-Typically being unskilled in t...

The PSHS fair is coming up at the end of this month, and since the fair council is planning a cosplay, I decided to join.

My original plan was Cthulhu for President, which is technically easy--all I have to make is the head. I would recruit a female student or teacher to cosplay as Sarah Palin with me. However, since the US election fever is over and Philippine politics is boring, Cthulhu really wouldn't run for office here.

I quickly searched for something else, and I found none other than Ryoma Nagare. (Shin Getter Armageddon version)
[link]
He's the guy in the lower left, in the tattered trench coat.
The other choice was Zengar Zombolt (same picture, red coat, white hair, katana), but I figured the costume would utterly fail without hair dye and a decent katana, so I decided against it.

Besides, I can more accurately cosplay Ryoma due to my resemblance to him.

My costume is almost complete. Here are the costs so far:
-Trench coat: Php 500
-faded jeans: Php 400
-chains: Php 200
-gauze bandages: Php 22
-hair: growing it out. (+ P 150, since that's the cost of a haircut)
-eyebrows: natural. Php 0.00
-Maniacal grin: working on it. Natural. Php 0.00

All I need now is the tattered scarf.

Ernest Gary Gygax, the creator of the original Dungeons & Dragons game, has passed away at the age of 69. None of our RPGs, no matter how far removed they were from the classic medieval fantasy genre, would be the way they are without this. Final Fantasy would not have its Malboros, O-Chus, Sahuagin and many other monsters if it were not for D&D. RPGs have long since taken divergent paths, but roleplaying games would not have become what they are without D&D's initial popularity.

GG, Mr. G.G. Although I'm only a newcomer to D&D, I owe you hours of fun I had with my students and Creative Writing Club members whom I otherwise wouldn't know what to do with.

Thus I offer this brief Order of the Stick tribute for all of us whom at one point or another touched an RPG.
[link]

So, a whole week of no work really lets your mind wander.

I've finished reading R.A. Salvatore's Icewind Dale trilogy. Now I know why so many people fanboy/fangirl over Drizzt Do'Urden. He may be a Mary Sue, but he really isn't a detestable character in my book. (The D&D players who copy him, however...)
I wonder what would happen if I introduce his character to my female students. Would they lust for him in the same way that they lust over Edward Cullen?

I can't fail to mention that his rivalry with Artemis Entreri is terrifyingly rich yaoi bait. Especially with lines like "Entreri wanted Drizzt Do'Urden." I'm sure that in some dark corner of the female fantasy geek subconscious, the specter of Entreri/Drizzt fanfics lurks. May it stay buried.

My favorite character, though?

Catti-brie. Hands down. Her Cockney accent, her general attitude, and how easily she reads into Drizzt really endear her to me. Not to mention that she can overpower the ego of a bloodthirsty adamantine sword (though Khazid'hea doesn't appear in the Icewind Dale trilogy yet) and has a Heartseeker bow. Don't mess with Catti.

***

I burned through half of Khaled Hosseini's The Kiterunner this morning. Man, the first 1/3 is so depressing. I'm glad it picks itself up towards the middle, because I was afraid that it would leave me with a heavy heart.

***

So I got around to writing part of the story for the Eberron D&D adventure we've been playing. Since it's just a single adventure, we're more likely to finish it within the year, unlike The Black and the Purple (our Forgotten Realms campaign), which might take another year at least. I might post some scraps from it tonight. It's far from complete.

So it's been a hell of a year.
Baptisms of fire never seem to end when one's a newbie teacher, even if one has been teaching for three years already.

Shifting schedules, going to the province to be a chief examiner, dealing with ever-worsening time tables, and facing the grim prospect of next year's boss no longer being the same person.

The coming year terrifies me.

Add to that the feeling that I'm really not getting what I'm working for. I'm helping build the nation's future, for crying out loud, and they don't pay me enough to live comfortably. The only way I can live like I do is because my dad provides for a lot of my needs and wants. The only obligations I have at home are paying the broadband internet bill and paying for my own (often unused) gym membership.

At 24, I'm still a parental parasite, and I don't like it. I feel like a teenager at my age, and I need to get going. I'm sick of this. I want out of the government service. Thanks a lot, GMA.

I used to tell my students to stay in the country and to help it improve. But nothing seems to be working. Now I feel like turning my back on all that optimistic rhetoric and leaving the country. Sure, I'll probably feel like a hypocrite doing so, but at least I'll be alive. I now feel like I want the brain drain to hemorrhage the country so badly until these Satan-worshiping morons who run the country just run out of patsies to run the country for them. I'm tired of being a patsy.

I thought I could be a hero. Right now I feel more like a rat on a treadmill.

While I might be starting to take my master's degree this summer, I've still got a lot of time to work on my art again. Yay. Projects are still mostly fantasy-based as per the previous entry, in light of my growing fondness for Dungeons & Dragons. Here's a sample of D&D art by my one of my favorite fantasy artists, Wayne Reynolds.

[link]

He's got a gritty style, dynamic poses, and awesome designs. Worth a look if you draw fantasy.

Anyway, I hope to finish my Casavir piece soon. I had to stop drawing him and draw a female character instead, because really. Although I am admittedly poorer at drawing women, working on a guy's physique for so long is tiring.

Again. The school year is about to end, which means I'll be able to post more art.

I hope.

I'm not really sure what this summer holds in store for me. I might take my master's degree, I might go to Singapore again, or I might just stay here and gain weight. Or go to the gym more often. Anyway, here are my current art projects:

-Casavir from Neverwinter Nights 2. Keeping the Shirtless Girls happy is fun.
-Bishop from Neverwinter Nights 2. See above.
-Terazel Ras'Algethi, my Aasimar Paladin/Duelist PC from NWN2.
-The NWN2 girls. Hey, drawing guys gets tiring.
-Viletta Vadim from Super Robot Wars. I think I've scanned her already, but I took a break from SRW and sci-fi in general.
-Various other drawings, probably something from Code Geass.

Speaking of which.
Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion. (26 eps, 18 have been aired so far)
It fits under the mecha genre, but in my opinion it's very well-executed. The mecha don't have to appear in every episode, they don't always do the same poses, and the protagonist isn't an uber ace pilot. Yes, Gundam SEED, I'm looking at you.

Background: The Holy Empire of Britannia (basically the British Empire gone out of control) took over Japan several years ago, removing its identity and dignity. It was renamed "Area 11." Its people were stripped of their nationality as Japanese and simply called "Elevens." They were made outcasts in their own nation, and obviously many people aren't happy with it. However, Britannia was too strong and the Japanese could only manage weak resistance movements.

Enter Lelouch Lamperouge, a Britannian high school student who is a master strategist (he excels at chess) who finds himself being crossing paths with a mysterious girl who seemed to have been taken from a secret Britannian facility. The girl seems more than just human, and Lelouch also reveals himself to be more than just another high school student.

Code Geass is a healthy mix of action, high school drama/comedy, and mind games. The plot twists are excellent and every character who seems stereotypical---actually isn't. I highly recommend it to anyone who is tired of all the 300-episode mainstream shows out there. *coughninjainorangecough*

1) How old do you wish you were?: If it's just a matter of age and nothing else changing, I'm happy where I am now.

2) Where were you when 9/11 happened?: I was at home, surfing the net (or playing a game) when my dad sent me an SMS to tell me. I turned on the TV and watched. I remember crying afterwards.

3) What do you do when vending machines steal your money?: I buy another of that same item. That usually causes the stuck item to fall through. Expensive, but at least worthwhile. Unfortunately it doesn't work with soda cans.

4) Do you consider yourself kind? I always make an effort to be kind. It doesn't come naturally to me, but I enjoy being kind.

5) If you HAD to get a tattoo, where would it be?: My personal crest (black rampant lion on a black cross) either on my shoulder or my forearm.

6) If you could be fluent in any other language, what would it be?
Japanese.

7) Do you know your neighbours?: I only know one of them because she's an old friend of my grandma. This neighborhood has very few people my age.

8) What do you consider a holiday?: As long as I'm not supposed to work, wherever I am, it's a holiday.

9) Do you follow your horoscope?: I find horoscopes silly. Your destiny is your choice. Why should I follow the advice of someone I don't know?

10) Would you move for the person you loved?: If the conditions are right, yes. That isn't an easy decision.

11) Are you touchy feely?: I love being hugged, and I enjoy hugging others, but I rarely do it. I often keep away from physical contact, especially with girls, but hey, when they need it? I'm glad to give. (Receiving hugs from girls is awesome too.)

12) Do you believe that opposites attract? Apart from magnetism, no. Not necessarily opposites. Complementary pairs, now those are great. Uniformity is boring.

13) Dream job?: My current job, teaching, but with more pay. I love teaching High school. I don't do it for money. The honor of opening minds to the world is wonderful.

14) Favorite channel(S)?: I rarely ever watch TV, except for Discovery.

15) Favorite place to go on weekends?: Starbucks in The Podium. Free wifi, good coffee.

16) Showers or Baths?: I usually take showers because I'm often in a hurry. That and we don't have a bathtub. But relaxing in bubbles is grand.

17) Do you paint your nails?: The only tending my nails get is trimming.

18) Do you trust people easily?: I don't usually do much that involves trust. That's my way of avoiding distrustful people. But if something involves trust, I usually do so out of necessity.

19) What are your phobias?: I'm not afraid of blades and lightning, but I'm afraid of needles and static electricity. Go figure.

20) Do you want kids?: Two or three.

21) Do you keep a handwritten journal?: I have one but I only use it when I'm completely emo. (Or if I want it to be secret.) I have two--one notebook and one bound with a lock on the cover. But most of my writing goes into my blog.

22) Where would you rather be right now?: Hmm. Starbucks.

23) Heavy or light sleeper?: Very light.

24) Are you paranoid?: I guess you could say that. I often plan my reactions in case someone walks up to me and holds a knife to my throat. The slum across the street from the school I teach in isn't very safe.

25) Are you impatient?: Very. I often dodge around people in the mall just because they walk so slowly.

26) Who can you relate to?: Geeks.

27) How do you feel about interracial couples?: Being in a couple in the first place implies accepting the other's idiosyncrasies, and culture/race is part of that. Their children also often look fantastic.

28) Have you been burned by love?: It burns within me, within my bones, but cannot be let out. Its smoke clouds me eyes, chokes me with tears, but its warmth is pleasant. It does not scorch.

29) What's your main ring tone on your cell?: Invoke by TM Revolution (Gundam SEED first OP). I really want to change it to something else, but alas, I can't find a decent midi that will actually work.

30) What were you doing after midnight last night?: Sleeping.

31) What did the last text on your mobile phone say? "I hope it's not just salad dressing but veggies as well." --from my mom, who was asking me to buy salad on my way home from the gym.

32) Whose bed did you sleep in last night?: Mine.

33) What color shirt are you wearing?: Black.

35) Name three things you have on you at all times~? Wallet, mp3 player, cellphone.

36) What color are your bed sheets?: Cream

37) How much cash do you have on you right now?: Php 490. About US $10.<b...

I've been intermittently popping in since the 28th because the storm knocked out our power. We were one of the last areas in Metro Manila to get power back. We only got power at around 2 pm this afternoon. D: Late, yes, but at least my birthday wish was fulfilled.

Unfortunately, I ate some bad meat over the weekend thanks to the unpowered fridge, and now my tubes are totally trashed. Well, that might be an exaggeration. Nonetheless, it kept me from eating anything heavy for a couple of days. I'm going to try to eat something I like tonight (spaghetti). Hopefully my condition continues improving.

Now I have to finish checking my students' long tests on The Giver, but now that I have power I can relax a bit. Somewhat.

Of course, power outages make the Black Lion lazy, so Viletta's still incomplete, smiling her incomplete wry smile with an incomplete pose. Oh well. I'll definitely get around to working on her again.

I finally got around to drawing Viletta Vadim from SRW, but she's not yet complete. It took some work to make her face actually look like Viletta, with those sharp femme fatale features that she has. Hopefully I'll be able to finish the artwork and scan it soon.

Edjie's DA was recovered! Yay! Anyway, on to business.

RULES: The first player of this "game" starts with the topic "6 Weird Habits/things About Yourself" and people who get tagged need to write a journal about their 6 weird habits/things as well as state this rule clearly. In the end, you need to choose the next 6 people to be tagged and list their name.

1. I'm not afraid of lightning and large blades, but I'm afraid of static electricity and needles.

2. I don't identify myself as a goth, but apparently people say my sensibilities match those of one quite closely, except for my preference for white.

3. My temperament is melancholic-phlegmatic. IRL I'm a clammed-up introvert and only speak to when spoken. Although my melancholic side makes me a deep and perceptive thinker, it also makes me emo from time to time. (More often than I'd like to admit.) My phlegmatic side makes me an eternal procrastinator as well as a people-pleaser.

4. When I was a kid, I went through a phase during which I ate nothing but cheese sandwiches.

5. My hairstyle has varied so much over the past 5 years. It went from a generic guy hairstyle to a thick shaggy mane (see my gallery for Aslan's hair), to an ROTC regulation haircut, to uh, whatever the heck it is now.

6. I have the uncanny ability to disappear from sight. And no, I'm not a ninja. I just somehow move very, very silently for someone of my girth. I often get exclamations from my friends and students regarding my sudden disappearances. "Joey, how the heck did you disappear and reappear like that?" "Sir, how on earth did you get here so quickly?"

I don't know if people actually read my journal aside from the odd comment here and there, so I just tag whoever reads this.

Edjie's account has been hacked. Edjie's DA is probably the one I visit the most, and now her entire gallery has been completely wiped out.

This really, really sucks because all of her work is really good. What makes matters worse is that Edjie's emai and Multiply accounts have been screwed over too. Why would anyone want to do that?

Perhaps someone is stalking her, and is so obsessed with her that he/she/it wants to have exclusive access to her pictures? Or perhaps this person is jealous of Edjie's talent? Whatever. This is inexcusable, and only a completely wicked, soul-warped, neurally-deficient, sociopathic, psychotically-inclined liege of loiterers and malcontents could do such a thing. Whoever you are, you anointed sovereign of sighs and groans, may you fall into the hands of the Living God.

1..- What's your favorite Super Robot?

[link]
[link]
Gunbuster, hands down. 200 meters of Buster Alloy, STMC-wasting firepower, and of course, GUTS AND PERSEVERANCE.

It definitely helps that it's piloted by my favorite anime heroine of all time, Noriko Takaya.

Gunbuster is one of the few SRs I've seen wipe out tens of thousands of enemy units in one attack. (Of course, there's Ideon, but that guy's cheap. )

2.- What's your favorite Real Robot / Mech?

Hi-Nu Gundam. Power, grace and style.

3.- What's your favorite Banpresto Original unit?
(not necessarily from Original Generation)

Now we're talking. It'd have to be Hückebein Gunner. [link]

It's powered by a Tronium Engine, plus it has the awesome Uranus System. Sure, it doesn't mess around with gravity like the Granzon and Neo Granzon do, it doesn't have an awesome scythe like the Dis Astranagant, and it doesn't have the hyper speed that Hyperlion does. But it gets the job done, and that's what matters. Full Impact Cannon FTW.

4.- What's your favorite special attack or weapon?

Rampage Ghost ver. 2, Alteisen Riese's combo with Rein Weissritter.
<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v>hMJsMEUqok" Clip (Bleh, the html code is not showing the link properly. Click here and search for "Rampage Ghost" <_&lt
Low quality video, but nothing is more fulfulling than a couple of old-school mechs going medieval on a boss. Sure, the Neo Granzon's Regressive Cannon may blow you all the way back to the Big Bang, but busting an enemy unit open with little more than a well-timed combination attack is far more impressive in my book.

Yay, geekiness.

Anyway, I really hope to finish more stuff now that grades have been submitted. I can feel my creativity coming back. Yes.

Okay, I've been really busy lately. I've been busy not only with school, but with trying to get into shape as well. I have 30 pounds to lose or turn into muscle, so I've been going to the gym again. It feels really good to engage in some form of physical exertion after a long time of sitting around like a Hutt. Given the rather hefty load I'm handling right now (it's still relatively lighter than the loads of some of my colleagues), I'm going to become a lot less active.

Nevertheless, expect an occasional piece now and then. I intend to create stuff on the following subjects:
-Christian Resurrection
-Top wo Nerae! 2: Diebuster (Nono/Buster Machine 7)
-Original mecha (Josiah)
-GGXX Slash (Holy Order Sol)
-Demonbane

I've been watching Kishin Houkou Demonbane, and though it's not excellent, it's pretty fun to watch. It's a mecha series that's heavily based off Lovecraftian mythos (Cthulhu, etc). I never really liked Lovecraft, but I think this tie-in is pretty good. I really love the mecha and character designs. Check it out at [link]

Btw, if you haven't seen Superman Returns yet, YOU SHOULD. It's totally awesome.

A message to all Filipino students from a teacher who has seen the gross differences between private and public schools:

Guys, for most of us it's just one more day until we start classes. I know everyone has their gripes about school. Idiot people teasing us, users, bad teachers, whatever. For me it's low pay. But think of it this way. In public schools unlike ours, there are 100 students to a classroom. They only have one book per hundred students, and they sit on the floor because their rooms aren't furnished.
In PSHS, you don't pay anything. No, the government PAYS YOU to study. You're probably sick of hearing this, but everyone who has a private education in the Philippines should be thankful. Think about what you already have, guys. Enjoy the schoolyear. Make the most out of it. See the big picture. You aren't where you are now by accident.

Godspeed to you all, dear students. Welcome to SY 2006-2007.

Go and watch it, but please---if you want to learn more about Jesus and church history, Dan Brown is not an expert on it. He presents soooooo many shaky theories as historical fact. Every single claim he makes is either a half-truth or total baloney. (Except for Mary Magdalene NOT being a prostitute; that's true. There is no scripture or document that says she was.)

I'm finally back in the Philippines after a wonderful trip to the US and Singapore. I have a couple of current projects: Teysa Karlov, Orzhov Scion and the Angel of Despair, both from Magic: The Gathering. Teysa looks pretty much like an anime/manga interpretation of her original artwork, but I chose to make my Angel of Despair completely different from the artwork seen in Magic. The original Angel is depicted as a bald woman in leather and gold armor with black wings. Todd Lockwood did an awesome job on the artwork, but I prefer hair on females, thank you. D: Anyway, both sketches might be done by the end of the day---Teysa is almost finished, so I want to put more time into Angie.

Here are images of the original Magic artworks. Both are by Todd Lockwood.
Angel of Despair: [link]
Teysa: [link]

Expect my version of the Angel of Despair soon.

In this part of the world, Summer's about to arrive and work (since I'm a teacher) is about to end for the schoolyear. there are three characters who I want to draw art of soon (apart from my originals)---- Nono from Diebuster, Toshi Umezawa from Magic: The Gathering's Kamigawa cycle, and V from V for Vendetta. The real challenge is V, I guess, because his usual depictions in the comic book make him almost entirely featureless except for the mask. I guess I look forward to finding a way to create a unique depiction of him that is no less creepy or intimidating that the movie posters.

Toshi's a bit easier--it isn't hard to put together a depiction of a ronin/kanji mage (the kanji mage part really interests me, using Japanese glyphs to cast spells).

Nono doesn't need any creative forethought apart from what pose she's gonna be in. Most likely I'm going to put her in the standard Gunbuster arms-crossed-I'm-about-to-PWN-you-HARD pose.

It's highly likely that Toshi'll be next.
