Except I can't hardly find anything near what I want for lower than 3000 bucks. What the hell. I don't want any of those bajillion-page jobs or ridiculous DPIs, I just want a functional scanner I can fit things on. Something like this [link] , but bigger y'know?

Like, look at these screwy prices: [link] [link] The best price I could find was on EPSON's GT-2000 - $1800 Canadian.

The Contex one looks flippin' sweet, but holy pants it's trying to cost almost 7 times more than my COMPUTER with that reduced price on that link. WHY. My silly scanner that's part of my all-in-one has quality enough for me, it's just the SIZE that's not right (and the ridges), and that only cost me 50 bucks. :I I don't care about "color feature extraction" or "error diffusion halftoning" or "adaptive thresholding." DO THOSE PHRASES EVEN MEAN ANYTHING AT ALL.

Fffffffffff.

Anyway, do any of you guys have any idea if such a thing as I desire exists, and if so where? Just a flatbed scanner, size maybe around 11x17 inches. Preferably not a thousand dollars. :|

Oh yes, and you know what I forgot to mention? One of my cats, Hazel, croaked on the 13th. Very odd and unexpected, as I believe she was only 7 or 8 years old, and we're not sure what exactly it was. She was perfectly fine the day before too, and post mortem turned up nothing unusual. But there's no need to say silly things like "I'm sorry to hear about your cat" or anything haha, my family has had so many cats croak that none of us were really particularly fazed by it. We've got a nice little urn collection going on now, of our one dog and, including Hazel when hers comes in, three of our cats. So it goes!

Anywho, I'm going to try and increase art output for the rest of the summer. We'll see how that goes, lol.

No idea what it is yet. He seemed well enough to at least retain his sense of humor - as the paramedics were wheeling him out, he said "I'm fine now," whilst grinning disarmingly.

Time to play the waiting game.

EDIT: He's fine, the dork. Just a spontaneous sort of muscle pain thing. He was dizzy and groggy from the pain. He's taking a nap, feeling good on anti-inflammatories and painkillers. The man has a history of very poor pain tolerance, so my mother was exasperated as well as relieved.

When submitting deviations, by the mature content tick boxes and such at the bottom, it has a box you can tick to "Request Critiques." Only for subscribers, though, as I said. It's funny, 'cos underneath it says:

"Get real criticism and real feedback on your work

So it sounds like another way of ass-patting people, other than DDs and frontpage and stuff.

Anywho, just saying this to remind myself that, when I read things like "worst economic downturn since the 1930s" and think that they're exaggerating and being silly, I really am not anywhere near knowing what the hell is going on and am not really qualified to judge the truth or untruth of such statements.

Though I do think they're exaggerating. We aren't being forced into factories to can sardines for two dollars a week, nor is our unemployment rate at around 15-25%. We are not solemn, dirty little people scrounging on street corners decked out in hobo gear and fingerless gloves and tin collection cans. Most of us have more than one pair of shoes. Even the people who claim to be very affected by the economy have computers and tvs and iPods and buy shit online, and in my opinon if you were really that hard-hit you'd be forced sell it all.

But again - what do I know?

And, uh, if anyone comments saying "u bitch im that poor this is the last time i am using this computer because i have to sell it," then don't worry, you are for real, you are allowed to complain and can sardines if you wish.

    News

    Finally! Done semester one of Sheridan animation! Only seven more to go, hehe.

    As you can probably tell by the journal css, I bought myself a deviantart subscription to tinker around with. Mostly for the journal css. [|:}>... I feel very daring whenever I use one of the "subscibers-only" features, like I'm tasting the forbidden fruit or something.

    Christmas soon! I have a couple of friends from high school coming to my apartment this weekend, for what we are referring to as our Christ Party. Much pizza and pie will be consumed, I predict. I go home for Christmas around the 19th, no idea when I come back though. It's nice being in college, because no one expects you to buy them anything... but being in an art program, I feel obliged to at least draw up some perdy greeting cards. There will probably be dinosaurs and Wall-Es on them, because this IS me we're talking about.

    I want to accomplish some things this month. I need to draw more animals, and work on stretching my character designs more. I find that I cling rather tightly to my comfort-zone when it comes to character design, and I have trouble making more interestingly-proportioned and believable characters. Also, I need to memorize and be able to draw from memory the bones in the human body in the second week of next semester, so I'll be working on that too.

    I wish the chapters weren't be so spliced. It's hard to remember what the heck everyone's doing. And then random characters that have little to no bearing on the plot pop in and out... *sigh*

    You know, I heard somewhere that you aren't supposed to focus too long on secondary characters, because the audience will lose focus on the main character and stop caring about him/her. I thought it then, and I still think it now: anime as a whole breaks that rule to pieces, sometimes to decent results, but mostly not. Perhaps I'm in over my head on such matters, but I think that when you start to forget whose story it is or you find yourself straining to connect what's happening to your main character, it's probably a sign that you may need to rethink what exactly your aims are and what you want your characters to be doing.

    But now, on a less cheerful note, I must mention the cocky people. While most of my classmates are as dorky and ready to learn as I am, there are... a few who are not.

    There are few things more frustrating than people who think they're above it all. They are either of the opinion that they know way more about everything than anyone else, or they think that they'll have it all figured out by the end of the week. The only reason Disney, Dreamworks, Blizzard or whoever else hasn't hired these people, in their opinion, is because they simply don't have the credentials. Not because they can't draw, of course.

    Why are the annoyingly cock-sure ones the ones who can't draw as well? Are they compensating? Are they simply unaware? Or is this a chicken-egg situation, where maybe they can't draw because they're cocky? Either way, my overall opinion on the subject is that people who think they have nothing more to learn are idiots, and can stfu and go far, far away from me. 'Cos honestly? I don't need that kind of crap hanging around and bringing me down.

    Anywho, that's out of my system. I'm sure most can commiserate. :D

    It was a great comic. It was an odd comic. It confused me, made me think, and felt anticlimactic near the end but then it didn't at the very end even though nothing new had really occurred between those few scant pages. The Comedian was the most fascinating character in the book. I feel bad for him. The man could use a hug, not that it would help much. I feel like I should day more here, but I'm still trying to get over the weirdness of the ending... I mean, it must be the only graphic novel with superheroes in it that didn't even really have a climactic fight scene with the bad guy. Or a bad guy, for that matter. Actually, no scratch that - it's the only superhero comic I've ever read that didn't have a good guy.

    Which was more or less the point.

    I can't wait until the movie comes out. I think I'll go watch the trailer again, since now I know what's happening in each bit.

    For those who don't know, basically DA switched their system so that, instead of retarded Naruto fanart being fav'd like nuts and knocked onto the front page of the popular section all the time, there's the most popular stuff from each category on the popular page.

    Le gasp.

    I'm noticing a trend in most of the complaints. One, they are mostly from popular artists who are whining that their digital anime art won't get overexposure, due to there only being allowed one art from each category on the front page. Two, a lot of them seem to think that this is all anyone wants to look at anyway, so why even bother trying to open people's minds a little? I mean clearly there's a reason why those categories aren't as popular right? And jeez, who wants to look at photography and writing?

    *shakes head.* What an ignorant perspective. Yes, there are flaws in the system, but if those are the ones you care about, then you are an idiot and I have no desire to support your opinion. If you are one such artist whining over such frivolity, be ashamed. Not everyone comes on dA to look at your stupid fanart, although a distressing many do.

    So that's my general complaint. But to the artists, popular or no, who actually have valid points to bring to the table, I applaud you. :deviantadonihs: is one such person, and had a much better perspective on the matter - why should people just get hand-outs into popularity? It isn't easy to be recognized as a unique artist with your own ideas and style in reality, so why should it be so easy on dA?

    The main flaw that I can see is an obvious one: apparently you can get easy popularity through the new system by 'accidentally' putting things in the wrong category. I don't really think this can be fixed. Nor do I think it's really much different from becoming instantly popular through creating fanart, or better still, slash fanart. It's just a different way of cheating, and I really see no difference.

    The idea that desktop screenshots are up there annoys me though. Not sure what they might do about that either, though.

    Mainly, I think this is a good change. It rather forces people to look at more things than the same artists on the front page day-in and day-out, and enter the frightening realm of the unknown. There are a few kinks to work out, but give them some breathing space before jumping down their throats, eh?

    I have a puppy now! She is so cute! She's possibly a border collie mixed with a shepherd cross. We're not entirely sure, since the mum was a farm dog and could have therefore been knocked up by anything. That tramp. :giggle: She's a pretty big puppy for only seven weeks, though, and her paws are ginormous, and she's got a big poofy coat, so I like to pretend she has a bit of Newf in her too. :)

    Her name is Logan. Which is sorta a guy's name. But what the hell, since my name is Deven and my mom's name is Dana. Guy names all around for teh ladies!

    Switching to a different Logan entirely, I was drawing Wolverine yesterday! Crap, big beefy muscles are annoying. I was all proud of it and stuff until I woke up this morning and realized that his pose was quite stiff and, in comparison to how beefed-up his muscles usually are, he is merely "moderately ridiculously muscular." And I made his head too small, which makes him look really tall, and considering that Logan is 5'3" this is not a good thing to do. Ah well, I will learn. I might upload it later anyway.

    EDIT: We are currently puppy hunting, and after many, many hours of searching for puppies, I have come to several conclusions:

    ☼ If I ever meet the person who created "Golden Doodles" and "Shi-Poos," I will wring their neck. What retarded names.

    ☼ People think that if they give a mutt a fancy name, it makes it a better dog and therefore they should be allowed to more charge for it. A golden doodle is a fine example of this. The part that depresses me is that most people are too moronic to realize that they just bought a purebred MUTT.

    ☼ Golden Doodles do TOO shed! Why does everyone say they don't? They do! Everything bloody well sheds, and something with that much hair is gonna shed a LOT, although perhaps there are levels of discreetness to this. There is no such things as a non-shedding dog, even those little weird Chinese Cresteds. Hell, even those hairless Mr. Bigglesworth cats shed - it's just really small peach fuzz.

    ☼ A lot of people selling dogs should consider going back to elementary school in a desperate attempt to regain back IQ points. Like the ones who spell it "Pure Bread puppies." Or the ones that try and tell my vet-tech mother with 27 years experience how she should go about raising a puppy. Or the ones that think making a website with a black background and fluorescent green text looks nice.

    ☼ Having a vet-tech for a mother really skews your perspective.

    Me: "Erg, Jack Russels are too hyperactive and nippy... Dachshunds have back problems... Bull dogs try to go into cardiac arrest when you're doing surgery on them... King Charles Cavaliers have heart problems 90% of the time... labs have bone issues..." and so on, and so forth.

    ☼ Why do dogs get more expensive the smaller they get?

    ☼ Why is a German Shepherd over 1000$? It's a GERMAN SHEPHERD, people, not a fricken Persian rug. Christ.

    As some of you might know, it is an unfortunate fact that I still have dial-up, due to the fact that we do not live in the city and are surrounded by trees. The cable doesn't reach us, and the damn trees block the signal. However, we discovered to our delight some wireless thingamagummy that reaches us, and apparently all you have to do is plug it in. Whether this is truth remains to be seen, since even though we ordered it Saturday before last, it has not yet arrived, despite the fact that it is supposed to arrive in 3-4 business days*.

    Here's why.

    My mother, fed up with this, called them and asked where it was. She learned that, yes, they had sent it, and it should have arrived by now. And where did they send it? Somewhere with a totally different address, totally different last name, and a totally different phone number, several cities away.

    This amused me greatly, since THEY had called US, therefore they must have had our info right in front of them. How this happened, we haven't the slightest idea. My mother suggested to them that, perhaps, we ought to receive a couple months free because of this.

    Heh heh. She's a crafty one, my mother is.

    Time for some more weirdness my mother experienced today!

    My mother is a manager at a rather impressive veterinary clinic, but she can basically go in to work whenever she wants. If the weather's bad or whatever then she doesn't have to go, since it's about an hour-long drive to get there, and she can do whatever needs doing on the morrow anyway.

    Today was one such day that she had off. Evidently, it would have been a much more exciting day had she gone in.

    Some guy purposefully drove his Mercedes into the front entrance, which, might I add, is mainly composed of a glass door and pretty much a wall of glass windows that lead immediately into the waiting room. He got out of his car, realized the front entrance was no longer usable, and was in fact now mainly car and shards of glass, so he used the side entrance. He then proceeded to fling a vase at a receptionist, then go into one of the exam rooms and smash a whole computer on the ground.

    He glared at the frightened receptionist and demanded "Where's my Tyson, eh? What happened to him?" Here, I imagine the receptionist goggling at him.

    You'd be surprised at how many vets are tall men, or at least short, stocky men. These brave souls, in conjunction with a few bold females, blocked this bizarre fellow from proceeding any further into the clinic. The man, upon realizing that he was shouting at a receptionist, who, being such, had a phone that she was using to call the police, fled in his Mercedes.

    So the police hightailed it down there, and found the guy with the assistance of the license plate number someone had thoughtfully copied down. Of course, the vets on duty couldn't clean up or even touch anything, since the police had to take crime scene photos.

    Once the police told them the guy's name, they looked him up in their records. They had indeed once had the man's dog, Tyson in, who had unfortunately died... in 2004.

    One of the vets suggested to my mother that he might have just gotten out of prison. I like that idea, so I'm stealing it.

    In other, more pleasant, news, I did some serious modifications on my Firefox interface and computer. My computer now has a Mac interface, and is therefore approximately thirty times sexier, and I now have a bar that alerts me of my DA messages, a top bar to navigate me to various parts of DA, as well as a different skin for both google and DA.

    To unabashedly steal a phrase from     :iconinkthinker: that has irrevocably taken my fancy... I feel so damn hip I can't see past my pelvis.

    There are trees in decorative gardens outside the mall. We named the trees, and decided that these particular trees wanted to kill all of mankind. Then we pretended to be the trees, and had a conversation where one of us was the tree and the other was a person trying to convince the tree not to smite them. Then we realized that it was a full-moon, so Kyle would soon turn into a were-melon and José into a frog. I didn't have anything to turn into, so I bit myself so that I would become me every full moon. And then we hung upside-down on a railing so that it looked like the cars were driving on the sky. And we pretended an elephant was living in one of the gardens, which proceeded to eat José and poop him back out.

    Several cars and people stopped to stare at us whenever we were at a critical part of our antics. They undoubtedly thought us to be either a) high, or b) clinically insane, when in reality, we were c) neither.

    Thus, I am forced to come to a logical conclusion. Ordinarily, people live through their lives seeing everything as it is, and nothing more. So, bored by this, people do drugs and get drunk and whatnot just to make things [i]interesting[/i] for a change, because coloured lights and demented objects and strange hallucinations are a hell of a lot more interesting than bricks and trees, yes?

    The thing is, this is the way I see things [i]all the time.[/i] If I'm bored, I look around and imagine things to be more interesting, and so they are. If I tried hard enough, I could see everything in a manic, multicoloured haze the whole day, and I know that at least my friend Kyle is this way too.

    This is probably why I am terrible at telling whether or not someone is high or drunk. I see them acting crazy and I think, "Finally! Someone's making sense!" And successfully strike up a conversation with them, enjoying the spontaneity of it, only to be let down at the end of it by being informed by someone else that the person was not at all on planet Earth.

    They notice it because to them it's bizarre and abnormal, but to me, it's normal and makes a hell of a lot of sense!

    A quick blurb on Meet the Robinsons. It was a VERY good movie, and I suggest you go and see it! It made me happy, knowing that Disney is FINALLY turning out some decent 3D again, now that they've merged with Pixar. It was such a funny movie. I loved the bowler hat guy! But Kyle, José and I called all the shots from the beginning of the movie, and got 'em every time. Eg. "[that person] is [that person] grown up!" "the bad guy is [insert name here]!" "bet he gets adopted by [that person]" But it was good nonetheless. After all, it's the journey more than the destination that matters.

    And Ratatouille looks marvelous! I hope it lives up to my expectations - Meet the Robinsons certainly surpassed its expectations!

    Anywho, I'll be concentrating this on my new OCs, so that I actually continue on with them and perhaps (gasp!) make a decent plot with them!

    The Rules:

    1. Make 100 pics each pic having a theme listed below. Each pic should have ONE and only ONE theme to it, for it to count.

    2. No time limit so have fun.

    3. The main picture should be drawn but not limited to. For all fair purposes, people are allowed to use their paint programs and photo shop to create the pic.

    Anywho, for reasons that are probably pathetic, I have never drawn ninjas before. I consider this to be a major character flaw. I also never drawn pirates. There must be something wrong with me.

    So! If anyone has any ninja/pirate drawing suggestions, hit me with 'em! I want to make up at least one ninja and one pirate OC, and thus far I only have a vague idea of what I want, giving you ample opportunity to run up and throw some ideas into obliviously open mind.

    Anywho, I've been working on a new style, largely due to GaiaOnline's single-minded obsessions with animé.

    On a different note, I am nearing 100 page views! It was 90 the last time I checked. Hooray for me. Now, Kyle and I just need to get started on our comic, containing Timmy, Jean-Claude, Erasmus and Kyle's previously unposted OCs, and we'll be set!

    But we're lazy. So it won't be for a while, I believe.

    On a different note, I am getting irritated by two things: the commercials on the radio that have companies saying "Merry Christmas. And thank you for your money. Please give us more because we wished you Merry Christmas" and those stupid angsty football movies. No, sports movies in general. They bother me.

    I've discovered I have an addiction to Minesweeper. Oh, and puke colours - puke green, puke brown, and puke yellow. Strange.

    Oh, and I am a big fat liar who should be decapitated, have my head sent to the devil for roasting and unmentionable tortures, and then have him send it back so you can poke it with forks or other eating utensils of your choosing. I made another colour picture.

    At any rate, the art will mostly be Discworld fanart, random fanart of whatever interests me at the time, and drawings of my two OCs, Timmy Button and John Claude. The OCs are part of my and my friend Kyle's grand scheme to take over the wor... er.

    Okay, so really it's just a manga-like thing we have in mind, originally going to be an animation, until we discovered how friggin' long it took to animate things, at which time we decided it best that we knew what the hell we were doing and learn to draw better before expending vast amounts of energy creating something like that.

    *looks up* Whoa. That whole paragraph was all one sentence. Impressive.

    At any rate, it'll be sketches until Christmas, at which time I shall gain a tablet and be able to colour things.


    EDIT: Well, that was a lie. I just did a coloured pic of Vimesy. Haha. I'm a liar.
