Objectives:
1. to develop an understanding of West African symbols and their purpose.
2. To create an Adinkra cloth.
3. To create patterns using Adinkra stamps.

Materials:
Information on Ghana and the Ashanti people
Information on Adinkra cloth
Examples of Adinkra symbols and their meaning
2"x 2" pieces of paper
pencils
Flexible printing plates(2"x 2") -we used fun foam sheets cut into squares
permanent black marker
cardboard (2"x 2")
xacto knives
8" x8" paper
rulers
masking tape
black printing ink
brayers
10" x10" cloth (white or natural muslin work great)

Procedure:
1. Introduce students to Ghana and its location, talk about the Ashanti people of the region.

2.Discuss Adinkra cloth, and the use of the printed symbol in making the cloth, and their meanings.

3. Explain that traditionally the Adinkra stamps were made by carving the calabash gourd and the ink was made from the Kuntunki tree.

4. After viewing the traditional symbols , have the students design their own symbols on the 2x2 paper using pencils.

5. Redraw the symbol on the flexible printing plate, using a permanent marker

6. Using the exacto knife, cut out the design and mount it onto cardboard.

7. Grid your8x8 paper into 2" squares using the permanent marker.

8. Tape paper on the back of the 10x10 cloth, centering the paper so you can see thru to the grid for placement.

9.Ink the stamp and print on the fabric, in each of the 2" squares.

well, here goes
(i have a bread machine, which makes it super simple)

if you have a bread machine, add ingredients in the following order:
1/2 c. milk
1/4 c. water
1/4 c. vegetable oil
1 egg
1/4 c. sugar
3 c. flour
2 1/4 t. yeast
set on dough cycle

if you don't have a bread machine, then,
use warm milk and water and add yeast to warm mixture. stir in well and give the yeast a couple of minutes to start doing its thing. Next add sugar, stir in well, then the oil and egg. Mix those well and start adding the flour until the dough can' hold any more. Cover and let rise for about 2 hours or until about doubled in size.

And then:
roll dough out on a lightly floured surface making the dough about 1/2-1/4 inch thick (sometimes, i justpress the dough down with my fingers to that thickness)
cut out doughnuts to desired shape, if it is a larger size, make sure to put a hole in the middle (you can just stab it with a knife, use a straw end, or a doughnut cutter. Personally, I use a pizza slicer and roll out rectangles of dough.)
Let the doughnuts rise about 10 minutes more and heat up the oil to about 375 degrees
put a few doughnuts in at a time, turning so they surface golden brown on both sides.
roll them immediately in powdered sugar, or granulated sugar, or let them rest a little and put icing on them.
glazed doughnuts can be made by putting some powdered sugar and water together and kind of watery mixture and either drizzle it on them , or toss in a ziplock bag or covered container with the doughnuts

makes about 24
they also keep well for the next day if wrapped up

Wahoo! I got to be in the Holmen Kornfest Parade! High of 65 degrees and wind and rain. Oh, well. I handed out candy, fliers, window decals, necklaces, a kitty i had sewn , and 3 squid hats. There was a little fighting over the 2 squid hats by the teenagers, I offered them to the boys without hats first. I guess I was also cosplaying. Akatsuki sweatshirt, black knickers, and black squid hat. (along with an umbrella, a blue jacket, and a bag for candy. )

My feet hurt.

saw a dorsal fin of shark or dolphin
found tube shell of some kind of worm
