The university's annual Geological Society Spring Ball was last night, and as usual I attended. A bit more than a month ago, my mum was walking back from dropping some DVDs off at the Blockbusters down at Tollcross, and spotted a wee poster in the window of the Edinburgh Bookshop, an independent one near Holy Corner (not a huge premises, but a pretty good selection if you're ever in the area). We got into Gare Montparnasse at about lunchtime on Wednesday, having visited my sister in Poitiers, which was beautiful but a bit quiet. It's not actually a bad book. The prose is as purple as ever, but there is actually characterisation! People disagree with Eragon and aren't presented as strawmen! Saphira has a personality at last! It is not preachy! Eragon doesn't behave like a lovesick puppy over Arya! There are bit-part characters that actually act like real people!

See, I was rereading one of the Maximum Ride books. For those who don't know, it's a series about some kids whose DNA has been spliced with bird cells. The characters are all hopelessly Sueish and the plot is rather silly, but it certainly took imagination and it's very entertaining stuff.

Anyway. The kids' bird DNA gives them wings, good eyesight, strength etc. The main character (Maximum Ride, aka Max, who is a girl despite the confusing name) is at one point described as having a 13-foot wingspan. That seems a little small for someone who's almost my height, even if they weigh a lot less, but I digress.
