You hear a lot of people talking about change nowadays, especially if you listen to the US Presidential debates. Well, I've taken a little of that spirit to heart, and found myself a new job. Still research, just trying to treat a different medical need. It is also no longer an academic exercise as I will be gainfully employed in the service of an actual biotech company. I'm going to have to become familiar with an entirely different set of standards and practices that go along with developing pharmaceutics, but the potential rewards are great and well worth the risk of leaving behind the safety net provided by post-doctoral research.

So it is time to start packing, 7 days until I load up a truck and head north for a new way of doing science. Needless to say, I think posts will be even less frequent, at least for a while. Forget being able to time it with a calendar, now we are talking carbon 14 dating. I guess its true what they say, the more things change, the more they stay the same.

I've tried to avoid these things, but my scientific curiosity finally kicked in. There was this quiz that I thought would be interesting to try using my music preference, anime OSTs. But in fact, 365 days have passed since I registered on dA. Seems like just yesterday I filled in all the relevant information to get my very own dA page. I originally joined to find a particular someone's work, but then I got the crazy idea to actually start drawing again. It had been quite a while since I did serious drawing of any kind. I though that maybe I would finally have the chance to learn something I had wanted to for a long time, how to really color lineart. When I only did pencil drawings I was too afraid to even try coloring them, and when I tried coloring copies I would make too many mistakes and end up just having to do the same parts over and over again. Of course, digital drawing gives me the opportunity to fix mistakes, but how to use all the tools available is where the members of dA have really helped. Looking back at my first digital drawing and comparing that to what I can do today thanks to all the tips from those in the community, it is a genuine shock. I'm no artist, I just draw what I like (eyes big enough to see through walls as one commentor recently put it) , and I am slowly getting closer to what I want my drawings to look and feel like.



So what's in the plans for the next year to appear on this page, i.e. my real drawing goals:

Multiple character drawings... now that I can handle PS better I should be able to get people in proper proportion to one another. When 10000 pageviews roll around, I'll show off my first one.

A male character.....I've actually had one in the waiting for some time now. Late last year I had a story idea that requires a central male character. Right now the design isn't original enough, but it's close.

Naturally I will be looking at all the truely talented people who are generous enough to share their art and drawing knowledge to the less fortunate like myself. Hopefully this will allow for me to produce more and better drawings more often.

Couldn't think of any other topic so I shall pontificate upon this...

I'll be honest, I am one of those gamers that think Id can do no wrong. They could put out Care Bears vs. My Little Pony and I would still be there on day 1 trying to secure my copy just to see what spetacular things John Carmack did with his latest and greatest rendering engine. Would I have liked Doom3 to actually have been a game, sure, but I knew going in I was paying for a glorified interactive tech demo. When Q4 came out, I knew that they had put the engine to good use. I even built a new rig to run it because I don't think FPSs are meant to be slide shows and I wasn't going to turn the visual quality down a notch. And it was a great ride.

While I was taking my casual stroll around Strogg, I was handed another game, Monolith's F.E.A.R. I had read some previews and was like yeah sure whatever blah blah another generic HL clone. Just give me my railgun so I can go frag more Strogg at an unconstitutional rate. F.E.A.R just sat on my desk, unopened and unappreciated. This past weekend I found some time, installed it and fired it up.

One word.....Sick

In both the good and bad ways. Story is simply perverse, but absolutely necessary to provide the environment that sets this game above even Carmack's latest IMHO. Solid physics engine and some of the best dynamic lighting out there. Everything is set up to keep you on the edge of just losing it. When you get comfortable that you are playing a regular FPS, it grabs you and screws with your head one more time. The game took me so long not because it was difficult, but because I was taking each step so slowly, afraid what was around each and every corner. I shut it off at many points because I was getting too involved. But I would be back 10 minutes later. It's been a long time since a game has done that to me. The ending was a great setup for whatever these guys have planned next.

In short, if you haven't played it, play it. Play it with the lights off and the sound cranked to 11.

But now that I have finished it, I can get back to drawing, at least when I'm not doing multiplayer F.E.A.R.

....Even less talent. Can't seem to realize any of the concepts floating in my head because I don't have the ability to draw them.

A public service announcement.

For all you kids out there thinking of going into the biological sciences as a career choice, I would strongly recommend against it. The field has become a huge wasteland of epiphenomenal, unreproducible bullshit someone threw together to get that Ph.D. slapped after their name. BTW, don't be impressed by that distinction. I've got one and it means absolutely nothing, just that I could jump through enough hoops to satisfy a committee's whims. Hope you like working holidays and weekends, because you will be for the rest of your life. I didn't even realize Thanksgiving is coming up...because I have fucking experiments planned for Thursday and Friday. Throw on top of that a seminar presentation next Monday and I can kiss another long weekend goodbye.

I'm a little uninspired in the drawing department recently, so why not a long and tedious journal post on something that has been beaten to death in the forums (but to tell you the truth, forums in general scare me)

I have been talking with some DA members in the real world, and of course the topic of the future of this wonderful website. Some say there is no reason for concern at all, DA is eternal. Others raise serious issues with the current politicing. And even if DA comes out unscathed, there are serious reservations about continuing to use/support a site run by an administration that has by all accounts hijacked the site from it's creators. I read some of the emails of °jark and $spyed. Looks ugly.

So what is your average DA user to do? I fall on the side of preparedness. I enjoy this stuff now, and its loss would not be appreciated. So what if DA gets borked in a legal tug-o-war, what alternatives are available? There are a number of drawing sites, even the lowely usenet, but none are all too appealing when put up against what DA has to offer. The nearest competitor, is that "were not DA but we sure as hell want to be as much like DA as legally possible" Sheezy Art. Now don't get me wrong, I don't have any real gripe with the site. I actually found DA through a link on someone's SA page and the site does have a functional search engine. I even have an empty account just in case "Plan B" needs to be implimented. But honestly, it is a weak substitute, especially given the fact that over the past few months, the site has been down for maintenance almost everytime I have checked. I mean, it is down right now as I am typing this. And surprisingly, it was in read-only mode around August 7th. Think they weren't expecting something (probably just server trouble again ).

Maybe it is too early for this kind of talk. It would be a real tragedy to have a refuge crisis flooding SA or any of the other sites. I doubt SA could even handle it, leaving many of us without a venue to share our drawings, and an environment where we can learn to improve them.

8/21/05 Update. I noticed a couple of days ago that Sheezy was having their own little PBS style pledge drive. Needed something like $700 to pay their bills because the site has been down so long they haven't been generating any ad revenue. So I just paid them a visit and got:

So I was able to spend some quality time on DA yesterday evening, and noticed that a number of Avatars have changed to some form or another of the yellow alien that represents the beloved Jark. Then they were showing up in the devious comments. So I made a rare trip to the forums to find the reason for the sudden alien presence.

I read the story of how Jark has left and everything is going to hell. I've seen this kind of thing before, founding members leave, community gets concerned, nothing happens. But this one seems a little different. Now I'm a Noob here, and so I have no reference to what "the good old days" of DA were actually like. However, the community is always the heart and soul of these types of websites, even more so for DA. So I'm gonna give the old timers the benefit of the doubt. The community has been nothing but helpful so far for me. If it's going downhill because of simple corporate greed in the top brass, then I'll throw my support behind the cause. Sign the petition and change my avatar, got it. Hopefully everything will work out, if not for the best, at least still work. I've still got so much to learn.

If you spend enough time on DA, and listen to the helpful pointers from many of the talented people on DA, your drawings can improve. So many great ideas and styles to admire and learn from. I'm sure this isn't a news flash to anyone here. Many thanks to everyone.

There's also the unfortunate side effect of overpromising and underdelivering, but that is a whole other story.

On a more somber note, my feline companion for many years had to be put down this morning. He hadn't been eating well for a couple of days, really not at all. The vet ran tests and found his esophagus was almost completely blocked by pre-cancerous growths. There really wasn't anything to be done. The idea of feeding him through a tube for the rest of his life just wasn't a realistic option. Sure there are greater tragedies in the world, but he was unique beyond the fact that he is the only cat I have ever seen with a curly tail. And he would walk a funny way if his tail curled to the left of his body instead the right. Strangest thing. He will be missed.

So I've been "going tilde" for the past week and finally decided it was time to pony up for another three month tour. Besides, the chafing was getting unbearable.


What will the second term of office bring. Not much I suppose. Probably let it sit for two and a half months then throw another couple pieces together quickly just like before.

I just had to try out one of those subscriber only features in the final days of my three month sentence on DA. I keep getting the feeling that I will be signing up for another tour of duty.

That is, if real life doesn't interfere. It has a nasty habit of doing that.

This is also my first attempt at manga shading, not really sure if it is good or not yet.

Thanks to everyone who has dropped by, I hope to be able to give you something new to look at in the near future.

I just wanted to ask everyone to please keep in their thoughts this long Memorial Day weekend here in the US. Her connection to DA has been down for a few days and it doesn't look like it is going to be fixed anytime soon.

Man....I can't wait to read the rant on this one.
