To be very simple, I generally just don't like comedy cartoons these days, and no; it's not just because I'm an adult. I used to like comedy cartoons, I still like many of the older ones, and I still like cartoons not made for comedic purposes. It's merely in terms of humor where things have gotten low.

Now, I think comedy cartoons have always been hit-and-miss. I have held a consistant dislike for Loony Toons, no matter how popular it is with everyone else, and the aforementioned everyone else won't shut the fuck up about it to me, so I won't stress it much. I also have tried to watch the shows Steven Spielberg produced in the 1990s and again, I just don't get it; everybody else seems to love them, but I really just find them annoying and weird, but also again, I don't want to pick a fight I can't win over sacred cows.

But whereas if something isn't my cup of tea, I can decline to drink it, if something I can't avoid smells like a steaming cup of shit, well, the stink is innevitable and I can't block it out, so now I have to lash back at the shit, and I hope that nobody hates me enough from the last paragraph to stop reading up to here, because I think what I say is important, even if you don't agree. The state of humor cartoons today, like many things today, strikes me as a pathetically amateurish attempt at entertainment that expects to gain the respect of audiences out of grassroots charm alone.

Let's begin on TV. If you want to trace cartoon evolution, look at the way cartoons looked in the 1980s, 1990s, and 2000s. In the first decade, you have cartoons that are formulaic in their approach--the 1980s are infamous and a subject of mockery for that--and so their art and themes were mostly true-to-life. The 1990s saw a bit of a departure from that, but it was an artistic sort. Shows like Dexter's Laboratory, for example, had incredibly deformed character designs, but they were deformed in methodical ways; they were caricatures designed to stress certain character traits. This parting with tradition was strictly visual, but it is my belief that it may have accelerated another process by changing the way people look at the way they made cartoons. Suddenly, the gloves were off, the people suddenly believed they didn't have to do what they thought they did to make cartoons; the given example was art direction, but I don't think they stopped there, instead deciding to proceed on all fronts with reckless abandon--and occasionally, their departure was not so methodical.

Grabbing at straws for new material, and a way to gain new audiences, Cartoon Network arm Williamsstreet grabbed up stock clips they owned and reedited them in new ways. This was a creative way to do things, and sometimes it made me laugh, but I don't believe Williamsstreet ever understood why their shtick was funny. All or most of Williamsstreet's humor, successful or failed, comes from their sheer tenacity at exploring anywhere and everywhere for potential gags, with a real tendency to dwell on toilet humor, sexual humor, drug reference, and anything else that seems naughty. (More on this later.) Space Ghost: Coast to Coast was funny (if pointless) most of the time, but the spin off, The Brak Show (both shows by that name) was an abomination. Never before then had I seen a show that felt so incompetent; I got the feeling the writers were just stumbling around into the weirdest territory they could, looking for the off-chance that they'd stumble through something funny. They didn't ever; humor doesn't work that way. Or does it?!

I said I'd never before seen a comedy so pitifully incompetent as The Brak Show but that wasn't the last time I saw one. Strangely, there seems to be a real demand spike that has kept Williamsstreet's shit factory running; we have new shows like Aqua Teen Hunger Force gaining runaway popularity, and here again, it's just boggling to me how it does it. Maybe it's supposed to be funny if you're stoned, but I have one key defense: There used to be shows you didn't need drugs to find funny, so needing them for this is a mark of inferiority.

So, if you couldn't get my darkly comical intro, the gist is that the last time my desktop PC fucked up, it fucked up very badly. The most basic functions have become difficult, with freezing and crashing ocurring during the most basic of functions. For me, now that I am going to a University and have no way to make a bunch more money while doing so, it has been a terrible loss. The thing that my whole life centered around is now absent, and the craptop I am using will not suffice. I was, for example, on the staff to make a Civilization IV mod, and my work was good. I persevered through it despite countless obstacles, and now, it is complete. Yet I regret that I may never come to see my creation come to life, as my laptoc cannot suffice. So it is with most other games, as well.

I'm not demanding anything. I understand many other people may be struggling, as well. However, if you sympathize with me, here, as another computer-obsessed nerd, I would appreciate it if you helped me repair or replace my old clanker by buying some of my prints. I have a large amount of available prints on sale, from all sorts of subjects, and they are in a wide range of sizes, so you don't have to pay any more for them than you want to pay. It will pay for the computer faster, of course, if you spend more money, but do whatever you like, and if it just comes to the common passerby throwing in a few bucks for a small one, all the time, that will also work. Coming into High School in the 2000, I was not very political. I heard what my parents thought, and no more. Sometimes I disagreed with what they thought; most often I didn’t care. I regarded government, not surprisingly, as a distant body in which I was too young to vote. I knew older people argued about it, but I didn’t care. I felt it didn’t affect me. I was in for a rude awakening.

My upbringing, as I stated, was not greatly-political. However, I was a curious boy, and I was to delve into a number of things to which politics had a great deal more relevancy than I initially assumed. As I began to read books voraciously, pursue interests, and become acquainted with my surroundings, a number of things became clear to me, listed in the following paragraphs.

First: That I detested where I lived. I don’t think I’m being overly-self-deprecating when I declare that I am a finicky person when it comes to diversion. Longtime readers undoubtedly are aware that I do not receive any social-stimulus in-and-of-itself. Spending times with others is not enjoyable for me, unless it is around an activity I like to begin with. Thus, growing up in a rural community offered me little in the way of nearby activities. All of my enjoyment depended upon me driving into town to go to the mall, the arcade, the library, the bookstore, and other facilities that did not exist close to home.

Second: I detested repressive religion. I have always prided myself on growing up as a boy who sought scientific enlightenment; I used to love reading about dinosaurs, animals, the planets, and such. I prided myself on the fact that I sought pleasure whenever it sought me and clearly did not hurt others. I prided myself on a worldview that held that there was no right or wrong doctrine, and that all people ought to be welcomed. Finally, I prided myself on growing up in a country founded upon such enlightenment ideals.

Before I refer back to the first point, let me continue upon the second. While I was brought up a Christian, my experience with religion in many people I met was utterly disgusting. Seeing people brought up under religious doctrines that held that science was a lie, and that pleasure was a sin, effectively depriving them of the fruits of liberty that America’s founders entitled them to have, was disheartening to me. I found such oppressive religious thought disgusting as it was, but things grew worse as it gained momentum. Such repulsive thinking has always been lurking in America (See Salem), but it really had its current revival in the 1980s, along with the idea of unrestricted market economics. The 1980s were definitely a reactionary decade, not just against the liberal politics of prior decades, but also against the perceived threat of the Soviet Union. Once the view of the Soviets as America’s enemies was in-grown enough, it became fashionable to produce a collective identity for America that was antithetical to theirs. Hence, Reaganomics and the new Religious Right arose as the new model of American identity. What I think people like Ronald Reagan ignored, is that the original American reaction to communism was not derived primarily from its opposition to religion or capitalism, but its opposition to democracy. Indeed, attacks on organized religion and aristocracy are far from simply being the exclusive realm of communist thinkers. Such attacks also have a long history of originating from the men who conceived of modern democracy as practiced in the United States and other countries. So by reviving such things as the Religious Right, Reagan-era America effectively dealt a blow to the fortitude of healthy democracy. The red menace fell, but the egotism that held that America was the world’s bastion of Christian theocracy, and that any form of economic regulation on behalf of the average man was the realm of Stalinism, remained in America, and began to pollute its thought.

I have not had a happy life at all. Being a high-functioning autistic child in the rural community that my parents coveted was a recipe for failure. When you live in one of those little shithole redneck towns, there's no arcades, no malls, no theatres, etc, so all you have for amusement is going and hanging out with other people. We autistics don't do that shit. We demand specific activities to join others around, or we tune it all out entirely. It's all worse when you also factor in that those redneck assholes hate those who differ and thus bully them in school. Grade School is still the worst phase of my life I've known, but after you get wounded enough, you get a callous. That is, school sucked all horse dick, but at least I didn't expect otherwise.

So when I finally graduated, declining to attend my graduation ceremony because graduation ceremonies also suck, I started community college, and things started to look up for me. I still lived with my parents in that shitty country town, and the city the community college was in wasn't great either, plus I never did make any more friends there than I had in Grade School, but there was a key advantage in that the schedule was flexible. There were general education requirements, but students were not shoehorned into classes in assurance that they were churned out with a standard education; rather, I took all the classes I needed as I saw fit, and as few at a time as I saw fit.

This actually had a markedly positive effect on my studies, because I wasn't overly-busy, as I always felt in High School. I began to not only succeed, but excel in nearly all my classes. While one will argue that any student who takes a lessened load of classes will perform better in those classes that he does take, I took especial advantage of the situation in a way that many others wouldn't. I selected classes from subjects I loved, mainly Social Science and Writing, and threw myself into them wholeheartedly with a passion few students matched.

What is more, in my spare time, I did not simply slack, but rather, spent time bettering myself in ways that I chose. I began to exercise to get myself into better physical shape, for the first significant time in my life. I began learning to draw, and learning to play guitar. I would make trips to the bookstore, and began developing my literary skills while passively entertaining myself by reading. I had impressed all of my teachers who saw what I had written, and I was deciding upon a career in writing novels. I still lacked friends, however, and still never had a girlfriend in my whole life. I figured, however, that with how relatively-great community college had been, the University would be even better. So I chose a campus that I thought would suit me the best, and departed with high hopes.

Here I sit now, with said hopes dashed. I am in a cool urban environment. There are many clubs to join on campus. There are intellectual students just like myself, who could likely be my friends. There are many attractive girls, with whom to form a relationship. There is a great library, which I could rent books from and use to do research for writing my own. Yet all of this is rendered moot, because this University's rigid, extensive homework policy leaves me with no fucking time for any of it. It isn't as though I don't like learning. I did away with that thought in community college, and I actually like the classes I'm taking. While I consider myself an aspiring intellectual, however, my mind, though active and creative, has never been industrious. I can only exert it so much on so many things that take effort, and now I have three glaring things to exert it to in the form of my classes, and their time-monopolizing course readings.

So with what little spare time I have, I have no more effort left anymore to play guitar, or to draw, or to do any other things that involve effort; I just loaf. Hell, even my homework readings cease to be coherent after a point; it just all drones together after a while. I've come to dread tests, finals, a whole fucking rat-race of intellectual imprisonment, so I lock myself in my room with my books, and torture myself for the grade. I know many of you are sick of criticisms leveled against the modern Nintendo and SEGA, yet I believe many of them are warranted, and this essay is about more than just them, so here goes the whole thing.

What comes now may offend a lot of you, but I will say it anyway. I purchased Rayman Raving Rabids for the Wii this Thursday, and again, I apologize to the many of you who clearly like this game, but I resolved to take it back within the first 40 minutes I played it. The Rayman series, once platformers, had been turned into a collection of drab, repetitive minigames allegedly made better via the Wiimote. Even the supposedly-funny villains struck me as little more than annoying. Rayman is ruined.

Part of this, I feel, must be blamed on the Wii, so here, again, is my opinion of it. For the record, I feel the Wii is the stupidest idea Nintendo had had for hardware since Virtual Boy. Or rather, considering its profits, it is a good idea, but a devious one as well. Everything I have played on the Wii only reaffirms my belief that it exists for little reason other than to make lackluster games supposedly better through gimmicky controls. I have played good games on the Wii, but almost all were despite the controls. In the case of Brawl, old-school controls are proven to be outright-better at some times. Other times, the games really do make good use of the Wiimote, but it is not necessary to their quality. Most offensive are the games that are shallow and dull if not for the Wiimote (and shallow and dull regardless, as far as I am concerned).

I do not, by default, have anything against motion-sensing controls. Indeed, I once envisioned a console of my own invention with such controls (mine also had a hologram projector and built-in scratch-and-sniff pads with mechanical servos that scratched them at times, but I’ll forgive their exclusion at this time). The Wii, however, is burdened with an inherent doubt because it is essentially a continuation of a policy I disliked in the prior generation. Nintendo would make games that had problems, and then use gimmicks to overshadow that. Donkey Konga is inferior to many other rhythm games; only cutesy barrel-shaped bongos and Donkey Kong Country characters thrown-in made it seem better than it was. Wario Ware, though sound in its gameplay and theme, continues to offend me with games that are far shorter than feature length, yet still are sold for the same amount as feature length games, due to constant embellishment with gimmicky controls. You can find many more examples. The Wii is essentially a whole console built around the philosophy that produced those games, and is leading Nintendo away from the sort of games they once produced.

I will grant, that Nintendo is learning somewhat, or at least segments of it are. There is no forgiving the Wii’s design for me, no matter how many games it eventually hosts that I enjoy, but Sakurai did make Brawl in his own way despite the desire of most of Nintendo to go in their new direction. Brawl, like Melee before it (the first SSB is excluded because it was a new idea at the time), was developed with a philosophy that I wish more of Nintendo followed: don’t move on from past successes; keep what made those games a success intact, and just build more on the foundation. The SSB series proves beyond shadow-of-a-doubt that a good formula never grows old so long as you can add to it. With more characters, modes, and moves, you can keep the same basic gameplay and still give people a new experience. SSB is respectful of more than just its own past; however, wherein my point is driven further; it pays homage to the collective past of Nintendo (and now, gaming) in general. People loved games like Kid Iccarus, Kirby Superstar, and Donkey Kong Country, and while we wait for that genius to duplicate itself, it’s a nice holdover for SSB to pay homage. Outside SSB, we’ve also got Yoshi’s Island DS, New Super Mario Bros, and Wario Land: Shake It, proud bits of Nintendo’s past coming back at last.

Sadly, just as Nintendo seems to be learning from past fuck-ups, several more once-great game-development houses seem to be just entering the phase. I’ve mentioned Ubisoft already so now I decline to do so further, so let’s look at SEGA instead. Some will claim that railing against modern Sonic games is just beating a dead horse at this point. My family finally took a vacation to New York City.

Even with only three days' length, it is easily the best vacation I have ever taken. That is the most colorful, diverse, awesome environment I have ever seen.

Expect lots of photos when I get back. Right now, I'm in Pittsburg, with relatives of mine that smoke like an old Pittsburg coal plant, and their computer room is like a gas chamber, so I'll let you go. Cough, gag, cough.

So it's fortunate that RPG superstar Bioware is spitting in the face of the detrimental Sonic myth, and giving the franchise the multi-character, deep-plotted epic it deserves. OK, go ahead and state what strikes you as a "duh" remark, that American pop culture owns itself to the point that it doesn't even need an essay to point out what utter shit it is. Perhaps you would've been right a while ago, but not now, because we have hit what I believe to be the lowest point of culture I have ever had to wade through.

I am wrong, you say? I simply notice it more because I watch TV more? No; I think, on the whole, I watch TV a whole lot less than I once did. After all, I now have Youtube, where the only ads are a few popup flash abominations and a whole lot of spam bots, easier to ignore than a commercial. As I am implying, commercials are now the bane of what TV I do watch. Most of it is educational stuff on the Discovery Networks, but even here, commercials dawn to annoy the fuck out of me.

Again, I am aware that advertising has always been stupid, annoying, etc, and has always helped to build an anti-intellectual junk-culture in America. Now, however, I think things have gotten worse than I ever remember them being.

Here's the reason. Before, the situation I observed in this giant behemoth corporation of a country we call God's America, was one in which the first step on the campaign to producing a stupid pop-culture icon was taken with that icon being created in various ways, and then, the icon would be sold to people, until they could not help but recognize it. Before, America's culural values evolved around commodities that were, if not acutally very valuable, at the very least, tangible. Before, we had a series of our desire to own commodities, and to see certain things on TV. Essentially, it was once the situation such that the idea came first, and then a capitalist venture was spun around it.

What a dismal situation it must be in which I am compelled to express nostalgia towards the petty excuse for cultural evolution I just described!Notwithstanding, that is exactly my feeling towards the past, and the situation that has come to replace it has been a dismal one indeed!

Granted, the replacement will never be total, as any consumerist model of economics must seek to sell to people whatever they find appealing enough to pay money for. However, joining the idea in which popular culture gives way to a mulitude of stupid business ventures which utilize it (I must inform the readers, nonetheless, that I found many of these icons to be repulsive even prior to their adoption as business gimmicks), now, business ventures have actually started attempting to create their own ridiculous icons and make them asinine popular culture memes.

This is absolutely what I believe I can call, with much authority, a new all-time low for American culture, because the memes of the decade I will call, from here-on, the "Zeroes," a term I can apply equally to the third digit of the years, and to the phillistine people of America in these years, are more utterly worthless in truth than any cultural icons we have ever seen thus far. I was born in 1985, and I am well-equipped to identify a culture underlined by little more than money, but even witnessing the full-assault of Reaganomics would not have prepared me for the wave of money-driven shit-culture I have bore witness to in the Zeroes.

Consumer goods usually have at least some value. In fact, for all that the 1980s may have been a politico-economic myth driven by short-term thinking, I recall them favorably as an age of video game renaissance, magnificent guitar virtuosos, and sensory delights everywhere. The money that buys these consumer goods, however, has never had any real value whatsoever, and this illusion thus extends to the industries based on nothing more than monmey flow, such as banking and insurance.

Yet as we enter an economic pinch in which the realities of just how utterly false this curious commodity really is dawn on us (a penny now buys less than the copper that it is made of), the industries made up of nothing more than this false commodity, mixed with a good dose of hot air, are churning out what they must feel are appealing pop-icons, in a vain attempt to make them more tangible to the people, and become something more than an illusion.

Meh, not really. My problems are just too numerous. I have basically no friends, so I when I need to have a good time, I just go to the mall, buy comics, and get drunk, and stuff. It really is fun, but only temporarily, and I've been blowing all my money on it. Now I don't have a lot left, so I need to get a job. I would get a job, except that I have to get my fucking homework done in time for the end of class, and then suffer through finals. German is alright; not too fun, but at least I know what I'm doing. Math's a bitch, as always.

Furthermore, I really, really, really want to go to Europe. But my dad was a dick about it and refused to go there on any family vacations, because he's biased against smokers. So I resolved to make money and go myself, but thanks to government buffoons blowing tax dollars on building more bombs, the dollar is now very weak, and it's way too expensive to go by myself.

What of holiday cheer coming my way? I couldn't care less, honestly. America's view of Christmas is a joke; the same men who were Ebenezar Scrooge in the Industrial Era are now the multinational store owners who encourage this greedy bastardization of a Christian holiday here in the consumerist era. I haven't asked for a material present for Christmas ever since I took Economics at School; maybe I stopped even before that.

So yeah, life sucks. Even the prospect of finally getting out of school isn't that optimistic for me, as that just means my dad will make me do more yardwork at home. I hate yardwork. In the near future, I have nothing to look forward to.

Last night, when I tried doing my usual kickboxing workout, I got tuckered out as all hell. Normally I lift weights afterwards, but last night I was too worn out. I need to get back into shape a little bit.

I developed my theory (though not exclusively mine) of consumer exploitation in the gaming industry, because I'm also a Sonic fan, and it's obvious the Sonic franchise is falling into the rut. While I do believe that a great deal of that is because Sonic Team is listening to the complaints of casual gaming idiots who don't know what the true essence of a good Sonic game is, it is ultimately Sonic Team's own fault. The opinion of those shitheads in the masses and the media that Sonic is completely about speed, rather than captivating, involved gameplay, and epic adventures, is directly based upon SEGA's old marketing campaigns where they indeed billed Sonic that way. Casual gaming fools only see the tip of the gaming icebergs, so they remember the mythos created around Sonic's heyday, rather than what the games themselves were actually about. And this is also ultimately Sonic Team's fault because they are greedy, and realize that the more people make up a gaming demographic, the greener the pasture they form. So if Sonic Team has to backstab their fans to make a profit off of casual idiots so be it. SEGA has always been the most agressively capitalistic gaming company ever in my opinion, or at least they were before Microsoft entered the gaming sector. Sonic was created directly to appeal to the grunge era, and as tastes changed, Sonic Team needed to change their stripes to keep up with the times, but it's still just new means to the same old ends (except the games themselves used to be good at least, back in the day).

But that's SEGA. Nintendo, who survived the downfall of their original competitor, is immune to that exploitive crap, right? Wrong! I used to think so. Back in the Nintendo 64 era, I used to laud Nintendo for following the urges of their individuality, rather than doing what was profitable, because the games were good, even if they weren't en vogue. Since then, however, Nintendo has reentered the competitive aspect of gaming, but now they are different than they were in the SNES era, because back ten, their games were legitimitely good.

Nintendo now is about systems with gimmicks. Not innovation per se, as they claim. Nintendo in the past was about innovation, but back then, they realized that the best innovation was usually pure quality. I remember them saying that creating innovative controls was a smart idea, because it would create new opportunities for people to develop the games of their hearts' desire, or something like that. Well I agree that such a "build-it-and-they-will-come" philosophy is a very good idea--but only for Nintendo itself. The customers themselves lose.

When attempting to determine exactly why developers are attracted to systems with gimmicky features, most of the evidence available, in the form of new, mostly-underwhelming games, points to one conclusion: it's accomodating to get-rich-quick schemes.

I view capitalism in terms of social-contract theory. Ideally, everyone's want is supposed to compete with everyone else's want, and this ideally makes everyone more responsible to one another, in spite of, or even because of, their closet greed. And it isn't just the businesses that compete over profit, either. It's also a contact between the customer and the provider. Traditionally, providers will be willing to sell people good products, so long as they profit, and customers will be willing to let the businesses profit if that means that they themselves get good products out of it.

That's social-contract and market-economy theory combined, but if there's one theory I believe above all others, it's elite theory; the theory that a few of the smarter members of society can outwit and outcompete everyone else. Yeah, sorry to burst your bubble, classical-liberals, but if I'm even going to swallow your self-evident truth that all men actually are created equal (and don't hold your breath, because I probably won't), I will still hold that some stay dumb, and a lucky few get wiser. These guys essentially get to pursue what they want more successfully than everyone else, allowing them to rise to the top of politics, business, and really any other arena with a hierarchial structure.

For a few years now, an anti-marijuana organization called Above the Influence has been producing ads geared at keeping teens from smoking pot. Ahead of time, I would like to mention that this isn't a speech on the benefits and glories of drug use. I myself have never smoked pot, and I'm not exactly planning to, but I know many people who do. They run the gammut from hilarious to extremely obnoxious, and in both cases act like idiots.

However, it behooves us to remember that America's Bill of Rights allows freedom of religion, freedom of speech, and freedom of press to even the most psychotic of citizens, and it also states that they have implied rights not mentioned in the Constitution. I can say with absolute certainty that Americans have the complete right to be idiots if they so choose. Incidentally "idiot" comes from a Greek word meaning someone who doesn't vote, and less than half of Americans ever vote, at most. I've come across enough religious zealots and pedophiles who were definitely more obnoxious and detrimental than any potheads I've ever come across, so I say it is hypocritical to make pot illegal while letting these psychos run lose.

I feel I'm at full liberty to say that things already legal are more dangerous than pot, because Above the Influence has nothing to say to the contrary, anyway. As strange as it may initially sound, few, if any, of their ads actually mention any harmful effects of marijuana. Instead, they are condescending to teens, attempting to speak their language in order to better target their big red buttons. And the idea they try to kiss up to is that which, among most teens, is by far the strongest: individualism. The gist of a typical ATI ad is "Sure, most teens smoke weed, but you're better than that. You're no statistic. You don't need to be a sheep."

Not needing to be a sheep sounds cool on paper, but it is important to consider the source. It is important to consider when they tell you not to be a sheep, and on which issues. A government funded organization is telling people not to be sheep ONLY when the so-called "sheep" oppose something the government supports. When was the last time a government organization ever told you, "Gee, sure the majority of Americans support this war, support this new tax plan, support this security measure, voted for our current leader, etc. but you're better than that. You're no statistic. You don't need to be a sheep." I am betting this never happened. Hence, hypocrisy and double standards abound, as is the norm in governments. They are using pretty words and pretty ideals to mask their real stance. This will be returned to later.

I recognise this particular form of brain-washing well, because I've seen it before. The perfect example would have to be the fashion industry. Perhaps nothing greater epitomizes the conflict between conformity and individualism than the clothing on a human's back. Clothing ads often champion individualism and the call of teens to express themselves, but to what ends do they do such preaching? The intended result is, of course, to buy their clothes, which will soon concede the stylistic norm to some other overpriced fashion fad. You will never hear a clothing commercial championing a person whose idea of individualism is not buying or wearing the trendy clothing sold by the fashion biz. It's all well and good to rage against the conformity mandated by school and job dress-codes, but then the more subtle conformity advocated by the designers in Hollywood, New York, and Paris, is somehow IMUNE to this criticism. Go figure.

This is exactly the sort of marketing that Above the Influence now uses, except for political, rather than business purposes. At the surface, their rhetoric is anti-conformist, but as explained previously, they take this stance only in order to enforce the government's agenda. So thus equipped to peal off the shiny shell, we can now see the more sinister meaning behind ABI. Since what they're advocating is not true individualism, the only logical explanation one can come to about their true message, is that one should ignore what his or her peers, the American masses, support, in favor of what the government supports. This isn't a war on drugs. If it were, than the ads would emphasize the harmful effects of drug-abuse. This is a war on free-thinking everywhere.

The political ramifications of this sort of conditioning are terrifying when put in the face of the ideals of freedom and democracy. In the case of the fashion industry, people have been conned out of ridiculous amounts of money due to their ideals being kissed up to. The lighting, special effects, and even poly-count are the greatest I've ever seen in an RTS game. In Generals, "exploding" simply meant a vehicle turned black and flew up into the air, with maybe a tire flying off. Now, things literally blow up, and leave realistic infernos charring the battfield. And the best part is that all of this ran relatively smoothly on the same computer I have Generals on.

It won't be the most intuitive game you've ever played, and the levels in the demo don't compare to the brilliant design in the Red Alert and Generals series. But I'll wait to play the full game to pass judgement, and it may be some of the most anxious, painful waiting I've ever experienced.

I don't think DA should forbid people the right to draw this shit, although I certainly want nothing to do with them. But I do think they should have check boxes for whether or not a piece of art is an abnormal fetish, in addition to whether or not it contains mature content, so I could filter the sick stuff out of my search. I don't mind mature content, but TOTALLY FUCKING PERVERSE content is too much. In fact, I'll drop this in DA's suggestion forum before too long. Meanwhile, let the flame war begin!

Still, it is much more promising than the extremely dumbed-down Sonic and the Secret Rings, and I'm getting it for that reason.

If I had to pick one thing I loved about Sonic 360, it would be that it's a definitive "fuck you" to the biased media that doesn't stop hating on the SA series, since this is a return to the formula those games set forth. I've waited a long time for another Sonic Adventure, but while I should be ecstatic, and in many ways, I am, I am also rather sad the game isn't on a Nintendo system.

The Gamecube section of my local Gamestop has been getting smaller and smaller for a long time, but I couldn't help notice one time, that the section was marked with a picture of Sonic. While it may have been made by one of those idiots who thinks Nintendo owns SEGA, it does prove how many people established that Nintendo was Sonic's new home, and with his main Adventures being ported to the GC, that sentiment is understandable. Of course, SEGA went multi-console after porting the Adventure series, but Nintendo always seemed more cozy with SEGA than Microsoft and Sony did to me. The Sonic series was arguably envisioned specifically to compete with Mario, so it was natural that a fair amount of ideas crossed over between the series by the time SEGA became third-party. Of course Sony made motherloads of platformers, but none came close to being the threat to Nintendo that Sonic was. Initially, Microsoft could only hope to beat the platformer kings with its own sepparate gimmicks.

With the war of yesteryear over, parallels in the two series' started to become apparent, and hard feelings between the companies and their fans all but vanished almost overnight. Sonic seemed to settle into Nintendo quite nicely, which was rather fortunate, given Rareware's recent departure. Then, however, Nintendo's Wii ended the dream of unity almost as soon as it began. If only things were different, the long rumored Mario/Sonic crossover may not have been far-off, but the Wii, naturally tailor-made for spin-off games, forced the mainstream Sonic series out. A Sonic game made to crossover with Mario would have to be fairly plot-based; a game where Sonic enters the world of Arabian Knights doesn't seem to have much to do with overall continuity.

Of course, I'm also concerned about first-party games. As with all others, these games will attempt to utilise the Wii's gimmicks, and history, in my opinion, has shown that developers care less about innovation for its own sake, than they do about using it as an excuse to embellish otherwise simplistic, short, and/or sometimes downright shitty games. Now the whole system is built around innovation, and it's easy to interpret that as a bad omen. Twilight Princess looks fantastic, but I can say that about no other Wii game at the moment. And of course, Rare is now making BK3 for 360. That's two beloved franchises switched to Microsoft.

I wish I could at least say I'll miss Nintendo, but I can't, because I was already missing the Nintendo I knew years ago. I bought every console from the NES up to the GC, and during the N64 era, I was the first to leap to Nintendo's defense whenever Sony's fanboys slammed them. But those days are over. Nintendo is seeming less and less like their old-school selves, and if anyone is thinking of attacking me about my opinion, first consider that it is based on three generations of successful consoles, whereas so far all you neo-Nintendo fans have is one less-than great generation on the Gamecube.

Some argue that the Wii is Nintendo's way of landing on their feet. They say that because Microsoft beat Nintendo in terms of power and online prowess, Nintendo is innovating to provide something Microsoft can't. This is a valid assessment, but it doesn't alter the fact that Nintendo is stubbornly sacrificing its own identity to stay in the console business. I may very well have prefered Nintendo went the way of SEGA, and exited the hardware business. Not that I wish Nintendo to die out of rage, but look what happened to SEGA. Yes, they have fallen out of favor with the media, but in spite of what biased reviews say, Sonic games often more resemble their classic forerunners, even after changing console hosts, than have many of Nintendo's games, which have changed to work with innovation.

Why 90% of Horror Films Suck Ass

Stephen King said in an essay that you can scare someone with the unknown for a long time. When you open a banging door and see what was behind it, you scream, but it's a relieved scream. Whatever is behind the door actually isn't as scary as the door itself.

You can also think of it as a rollercoaster. Imagine yourself, going slowly up the hill, with the chain pulling your train rattling all the while, counting down the time until you round the top and begin the plummet. Now this is the slowest part of the coaster, and unless you're scared of heights, it shouldn't be scary. But the suspense alone makes it very scary, and when you finally do plummet, the suspense is over. Once again, you might scream, but it's a relieved scream. Of course, you still may grow acustomed to it, but the designers are ahead of you, and try to work new, surprising gimmicks into their rides to keep the experience fresh.

It should be pretty obvious, then, that the key to being scary is a good combination of suspense and surprise. Unfortunately, for some odd reason, many new horror films have neither. It's hardly any secret that the majority of so-called "bad" movies are horror films, but whereas in the past these films were attacked on the basis of their corny special effects, low production values, and altogether stupid ambience, now all those problems can be remedied easily. You can buy some awesome Halloween costumes, props and 3D-Studio Max for maybe a few-thousand dollars at most, get an orchestra to provide you with great ambience, and never have to worry about censors sniffing up your ass. The pieces are in place to make an actual good horror film, and yet, most horror films still suck, now for new reasons.

The old-B-movies were innovative, which didn't make them good, but at least they felt fresh compared with each other. Now, horror films seem like they intentionally pay homage to a series of cliches the genre accumulated over the years, but this homage has actually resulted in a bastardization of the genre. This is because with horror films becoming so formulaic and predictable, they are no longer scary. The old horror films are the sort of bad that I can't help but giggle at them and make fun of them, not to mention that I'm not even remotely scared, but many new ones are the sort of bad that put me to sleep! Yet I can't help watching them, in an attempt to mock them. I must be a masochist, but I like to think I suffered for a good cause. So now, to save readers the trouble of watching all this garbage, I present you with a nutshell of 90% of horror film plots:

Part 1: Characters

Joe Jones: This is a nameless character whose only purpose is to die at the beginning of the film, introducing a conflict, as if a title like Ogopogo: Raw Canadian Terror wasn't enough. Monster usually is not shown.

*Stereotypical Black Dude: Main character in the "Protagonist Party"

*Stereotypical Blonde Chick: Either a main character in the "Protagonist Party," or related romantically/as a sister.

*Stereotypical Annoying Guy: Another main "Protagonist Party (from here out, PP)" character.

*Guy skeptical of threat: Yet another main PP guy. Note that this does not refer to the police who refuse to believe the threat when called.

*Young couple. Usually not related to PP.

NOTE: Characters marked with an asterisk(*) were not described because they are better lumped into a group. As a general rule, most of these can be put in the roll of Joe Jones, even instead of a PP. Also, many can combine with other character types, i.e., a black, skeptical, annoying guy. For those of these characters who are not Joe Jones, one will be first to die once the actual plot starts up, and another will probably second, and so-on.

Less-Specific PP Characters: These are those members of the PP who aren't necessarily meant to die. Some may, but others will survive.

Specific Hero and Heroine PP Characters: These never die. The Hero is the all-around badass, and the Heroine may or may not be a badass herself, but she will always hold the distinction of being the badass Hero's romantic interest, at least by the end of the movie. Also, note that since these two are the only ones ensured not to die, occasionally they are the only two left. Also, do not confuse them with "Young Couple," who usually do die.

1) George W. Shithead called the enemies terrorists. The enemies were religious fundamentalists, but Bush, because he, too is a fundamentalist, just used the blanket term terrorists. He stated they were our enemies; little else. Then he promptly wrapped up patriotism in his own fundamentalism, and made "God Bless America" the new national motto.

Had I been president, I would have constantly stressed that the enemies were fundamentalists. A "terrorist" is basically just any man with a gun your government doesn't like. Hence, I would have called America's new war the "War on Militant Fundamentalism".

Also, citing that the word, "God" was added to the pledge of allegiance and money, to separate the USA from its enemies when it was fighting "atheistic communism," I would reason that now that we were fighting religious fundamentalists, it should logically be taken out.

2) Bush championed national unity. Then, he just let his corporate cronies stab average Americans in the back, and just increased the new right's authoritarian smear campaign.

Had I been president, I would have championed national unity, and then backed it up. A national "lets pull together" sort of campaign would have been instated, much like during WWII. Scumbags like Enron and Haliburton, who did not help their fellow Americans in times of crisis, would be exposed for the brutes they were. If there was an oil shortage caused by the war, then I would have encouraged pulling together in that Americans car-pooled for a while.

Also in the interest of national unity, I would not have tried to constantly make myself look better than my opponents with loads of fucking talk-show mouthpieces. Of course, the fact that I would not run as a Republican would mean by default that those propagandist scum would not stand behind me, but the gist of my statement is that I would not try to gain additional powers, or fill the government with my supporters through nasty means. Bush champions freedom and democracy. I would champion freedom and democracy, and actually grant it.

3) Bush spends shitloads of money on far more weapons than we will ever need to fight militants. He attacks only the end results of the problems, never the weakest links.

Had I been president, I would have also attacked the weakest links. Instead of all that money going to bombs, I would spend it on rebuilding and feeding desparate countries, helping to prevent the angst that causes people to join up with people like Osama in the first place.

4) Had I been president, I wouldn't have been a dick to other countries. I would have viewed other countries with democratic values as our allies. I would have viewed the countries with superior democratic systems as role models that America should be more like, to better separate us from our enemies.

Either “Savage Strikes: No Holds Barred Fighting Techniques,” or once of those fun and educational “language” guides, such as “Mierda: The Real Spanish You Were Never Taught In School.”

Neither. But it would be harder for any given person to make Rouge submit to him. As a government agent/jewel thief, she is both above and outside the law.

06) For some reason, 5 (Foamy the Squirrel) is looking for a roommate. Should he share a studio apartment with 9 (Grace Choi) or with 10 (Kat & Ana)?

Grace. They’d sit around swearing and bitching all day, merrily! Kat and Ana are too young for that.

07) 2 (Rouge), 7 (Vivian) and 12 (The Tick) have dinner together. Where do they go, and what do they discuss?

Rouge has plenty of money; the Tick steals enough from Arthur’s bank account, and together, they can afford a very fancy Asian/Seafood restaurant. At the Restaurant, Rouge teaches Vivian, who is actually a trans-woman, how to be charmingly feminine. The Tick thinks this is hilarious. After this, Rouge lends Vivian some mascara to go try on in the bathroom. But a chef sees Vivian heading there and mistakes her for an Eggplant, so he attacks her. The Tick heroically joins the battle, yelling “Spoon!” Another waiter promptly gets him a spoon, with which the Tick knocks Vivian’s assailant out, thus saving her. Then Vivian continues to the bathroom while the Tick sits back down.

08) 3 (Fawful) challenges 10 (Kat & Ana) to a duel. What happens?

Kat & Ana beat the living shit out of him, arrest him, and force him to be yet another animal sidekick of theirs in all Wario Ware games to come. Fawful then escapes, steals Nine-Volt’s Power Glove, Zapper, and Super Scope, and then turns them into weapons. Nine-Volt soon takes them back, and when he sees what they can do now, becomes a Super Hero. Fawful then goes to work with Dr. Crygor, and together, they invent an innovative weapon that turns an RV septic tank into a portable missile that can strike anywhere on the globe!

09) If 1 (Amy Rose) stole 8 (Darkwing Duck)'s most precious possession, how would she/he get it back?

Amy steals his gas-gun. Darkwing Duck tries to steal her hammer in revenge, but gets knocked away trying. So Darkwing threatens Cream the Rabbit with a mere Super Soaker. Cream stands no chance, so Amy returns the gas gun.

10) Suggest a title for a story in which 7 (Vivian) and 12 (The Tick) both attain what they most desire.

Mario Just Lets Bowser Kidnap Peach, and then Hooks Up With Vivian, So the Tick Saves Peach Instead and Becomes an Over hyped Hero!

11) What kind of plot device would you use if you wanted 4 (Raven) and 1 (Amy Rose) to work together?

Raven gives Amy lessons on being more low-key, while Amy teaches Raven to have fun. Then, they foil a plot by Brother Blood and Black Doom working together!

Anyhoo, Summer came and went, just as Summers tend to. The difference for me, however, is that mine aren't even very fun while they last. Yeah, mostly, it just means a lot of horrid yardwork. Plus, my parents and I have some disagreements over what an ideal vacation is. Damnit, I could be stuffing a pizza in my face in Italy; instead, I have to take the most insane of precautions to make sure what drab canned food I have doesn't bring in the bears!

Yeah, camping. Meh, it's fun the first few times, but after a while, you just get the feeling that you're seeing the same trees, the same fallen logs, the same lakes, rivers, creeks, mountains, and port-a-potties all over again. I love bears, but we rarely see them, and when we go fishing, the only bites I ever get are from mosquitos!

Well, now we're back, and so is school, and though I hate to say it, I may enjoy the Semesters more than my Summer vacations, although since this is the first time I take a math class in college, I also may not enjoy it.

Anyway, to complicate matters more, I once again salivate over the matter of upcoming video games, particularly Sonic Doesn't-Have-a-Title-Yet. But lo and behold, out of nowhere, fate rears its ugly head, and fate's ugly foot kicks me in the groin! Nintendo makes a console conrtolled with what can only be described as a computer mouse and a TV remote having sex, and so while XBox 360 and PS3 get the cool game, SEGA makes a sepparate game on the Wii, which apparently is about Sonic taking a pilgrimage to Mecca, and it looks much worse. This is the first time in my whole life that the first available console I buy isn't going to be a Nintendo console, and so far the only Wii game I'm even excited for is SSBB.

And then, I see the price for XBox360. FOUR HUNDRED FUCKING DOLLARS!!!!! PUT YOURSELF IN OTHERS' SHOES, MICROSOFT; HOW'M I GONNA AFFORD THAT?! I haven't seen so shocking a price this side of gasoline! So I'm going to need to get some sort of part-time job if I want to come up with that sort of money. I won't rest until I have it.

On the plus side of things, I'm finally 21 now. Drinking rules, as does being able to buy alcohol myself. So far, my favorite beer is Heineken.

Sadly, I was wrong. I don't know what happened, but something went terribly wrong, and I got backstabbed by those I had faith in many times over. First, Nintendo sold Rare. Then, Vigilante 8 3 never came. Deus Ex: Invisible War did, but it was so inferior to the first that it was almost a disservice to the series. Then Eidos broke with Ion Storm, meaning they can't release another sequel to rectify it. Sonic got worse every time Sonic Team tried to make him better. Meanwhile, Nintendo stopped making so many Mario games, and started to let third party developers abuse Mario as a gimmick to sell more genreic games. Rareware is acting like high and mighty idiots who should be blatantly aware of what their fans want, but they're not.

Now, there are still some good games these days. But the era istself is worse than last. I can't put my finger exactly on the problem, but it needs to be found if there is any hope of ressurecting the industry to its former glory.

Perhaps a good place to start is to look at how game developers, these days, have a tendency to stress gimmicks instead of originality and variety. There may be some crossover between the three, but none of it is concrete, and at its basest meaning, a gimmick is just anything that sells (or is intended to sell) a game. Plus, what crossover does exist is often negative. Gimmicks can add originality, and originality can create gimmicks, but both are usually at a cost to variety.

Ideally, creativity and innovation should add more variety into an industry, but what I'm seeing is that they are actually taking them away. Originality is only going to be original for so long before it becomes a cliche, but nonetheless, when someone puts in a hit new gimmick, loads of developers jump on the bandwagon. Bandwagons are, of course, dangerous things; they cause individualists to be trampled in a stampede of sheep. Past generations of gaming didn't have, for whatever reason, the trends of today. They did have hit games, but the difference is they weren't so similar to each other. Now, however, developers either try to adapt old franchises to the gimmicks of the day, or else they just discontinue them or start a new one. A franchise sometimes loses its life; sometimes its soul, but it's usually one of those.

Everyone thinks that the key to success these days is to add guns, vehicles, free-roaming, choosing to be good or evil, online play, ragdoll physics, etc. The truth is that most games that try to immitate Halo, GTA, Tom Clancey games, etc, are vastly inferior, but people just don't get it. That's why we got Shadow the Hedgehog, Deus Ex: Invisible War, and Donkey Konga. (The last is included because special controllers for playing rythm games are not innovative anymore, and DK's attempt was inferior to Amigo's Taiko's, and DDR's.) People sacrifice their franchises' uniqueness in order to give them more relevence to what's hip and groovy.

It almost seems like it's more about hardware than software these days, possibly as a result of such gizmos as Ipod and Dell personlaized computers. But if that's the case, things need to change. I'm still playing my Nintendo 64 loads more than I play modern games, which goes a long way towards showing that size doesn't always matter. Used properly, it does, but people these days look far too much at what a company can do with their new systems, while it's what they actually end up doing that's important.

I have rarely been out of the country, and never out of North America. So I don't know what things are like outside the box, but here in America, optimism dominates. It's almost a religion, and that makes it effectively the new opiate of the masses. How many songs have you heard saying "Don't worry; everything will be alright," "believe in yourself, and you will succeed," or similar horseshit? If you're like me, a holy fuckload. Damn mung makes me want to smash the radio, and maybe some day I actually will, since every radio I buy seems to be a cheap piece of shit that ends up breaking anyway.

If it seems to you I'm making too big of a stink against optimism, you are wrong. They keep telling you to look on the bright side; if not, you will be miserable. Maybe so. But if you decide to "don't worry; be happy," while others starve to death, while people go to get slaughtered in war; while others suffer as you look away, isn't that damned selfish of you? I say it is. Any look at a good source of news (Read: One from outside the USA) will show people that everything is not alright; in fact, things may be getting worse, but the average Joe in America does not care, because he or she is more interested in listening to retarded bubblegum songs or watching ditzy, namby-pamby movies.

This disgusts me. The new American dream is to be as successful as possible with as little thought as possible, and blissful ignorance obviously facotrs into that. But as these people succeed with their material trappings, other countries were raped to get them, including a few, like Sierra Leone, that were raped just to get diamonds, which have little use as a material commodity, except for looking pretty. And yet everyone wants to turn a blind eye, convinced that if they ignore the problem, it doesn't exist. Well then, fuck them. Positive attitude towards a negative world is a subtle, but very dangerous form of selfishness.

What about the other type of optimism, the type that deals with one's self image, that is useful in self-motivation, and epitmoized in our despicable school system through the examples of sports competition? I'll grant that this source of optimism is indeed useful towards pushing one to exceed in athletics, but its bad has outweighed this virtue many times over in school, because now it is used as propaganda in schools, brainwashing students to believe that is the way of the world, and anyone who trys hard invariably succeeds at anything they do. What rubbish! Life is not like the athletic activities they use as precedents. Mountain climbing is straight-forward and predictable (barring the times when one reaches up to grab the edge of a crevice, and grabs a rattlesnake instead), and although team sports games vary greatly, they can boast clear rules on fairplay, as well the complete right of everyone to observe what goes on in them.

The real world is different. It may be an athlete who sweats to succeed in sports, but the people who succeed in life are the snakey manipulators that sweat the least in their jobs. An athlete is penalized for unfair play, but our life rewards it. The cheaters, or at least, the very slippery people, are the ones who get the green in real life. And as for whatever professional athletes do succeed because of the optimist lessons rammed down their throats in school, a big fart on them! If there is one thing America does not need, it's any more professional athletes who make the big cash while many people who benefit society far more are robbed of it. And all the while this shit is happening, people just sit idly by and let it slide, because they are brainwashed into ignoring all their problems in hopes that they go away, and also into thinking that the reason they are not succeeding is because they are not trying hard enough within the rules, not realizing they must really start fighting the pigs to get back what is rightfully theirs.

Life is not a mountain to be climbed; it is a demon to be slain, and the only balls that need to to be kicked to succeed in life, are those of the suits who maintain this stupid system! Them, and their fucking puppets, those snakes who started that goddamned optimist propaganda program.

Not keen on the title, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, but the trailer looks promising. No sign of Diddy Kong yet, but three of the other most-wanted characters are already in it; may there be many more. And Solid Snake from Metal Gear, too! (Damn, I have shameful thoughts about boners every time I say that!)

More cool stuff is on the horizon as well, such as what looks to be a vastly-upgraded port of Diddy Kong racing on the DS, complete with a track editor, Yoshi's Island 2, and a game I knew about long before this E3, News SUper Mario Bros. It's coming out this monday, but I probably won't get it that soon, because it's finals week.

Also a potential upcoming release is Super Mario World, Dark Horizon. If you think you missed that anouncement, it's understandable, because it's a fangame. It looks, however, to be one of the best fangames ever. Its creator, Henford, was banned from Mario Fan Games Galaxy for two months (unjustly, I should add), but his ban has almost expired, and hopefully he will finally release his gem when he gets back.

Last, but not least, Command & Conquer 3 and Civilization IV: Warlords, are looking better and better. I may soon have a reason to play PC games again.

Now, I bought this book the other day, to help me draw Nintendo characters. Principally Donkey Kong, who I used to be really good at drawing, but now I seem to suck at it, possibly because I haven't really cared about the series since Rare could no longer work on it.

But anyway, Michael here says Snide is a villain. Excuse Moi, did this dude ever play DK64? Snide was a guy who defected from K. Rool!

I've already chewed out disrespectful Yaoi and Yuri starring people who are obviousaly straight on multiple occasions, so now I present you with arant against other art I find despiccable.

DA is a haven for all manner of weird fetishes--aw hell, so is 80% of the Internet, but I digress. It is truly scary what turns some people on. Inflation art--damn, that's pretty sick. But at least fat people aren't offensive. A type of fetish art that is coming into vogue now really is damn offensive. Now, it doesn't actually feature women getting raped, but what it does do is blatantly disrespect women for the sake of appealing to those people who find it erotic. Such pictures have women tied and gagged, hung from trees or beams, and often, with their clothes torn (or ripped off entirely). Other art features women being even worse treated, tortured, eaten by monsters, abused (I will not name names, but I will say that much of this "stars" Peach and Daisy of the Mario series).

Now, while I personally find tough women who stand up for themselves when attacked infinitely more erotic (provided their not the type of tough women who think they need to look like guys to be tough--you know which ones I mean), I'm not going to force anyone to agree, but geez, the alternative, which I have dubbed rape art, is clearly sick in my eyes, and it should be in yours. If anyone is actually aroused by that, they should keep it to themselves and not draw pics.

Of course, I can't force anyone to change their behavior, but I would request it: PLEASE don't draw this filth. "Fan" art of a character does not include art that dessecrates that character, and art that shows women looking violated, for the sake of being erotic, should be as sick to you as it is to me.

I hear Yuji Naka, the man who used to lead Sonic Team, and claim, falsely, that he created Sonic, is quitting. He is leaving and Sonic will probably stay behind. Maybe it will get better now; maybe not. But the climb back to the top will be a long one.

Meanwhile, Rareware has revealed that they are now working on a number called Viva Pinata, which, though nice to look at, is unacceptable to to the fact that it is not Banjo-Kazooie 3.

Warren Spector left Ion Storm a while ago, so there probably won't be a Deus Ex 3. (Though to be honest, if he fucks it up the way he did the first sequel, I wouldn't want one, anyway.)

Luxoflux is still around, but the same cannot be said for the great American video game franchise they created, Vigilante 8.

And Nintendo. Meh, I think we all know the scoop on that one. They're digging their own grave with almost everything they do lately, whatwith this innovation shit, and Revolution, in spite of the lofty goals they've announced for it, seeks to multiply the innovation one hundred-fold. In doing so, Nintendo's end is at hand.

With all these once great companies falling into ashes, I say it's time that we, the fans, start our own revolution. The day is probably near when they have descended so far into hell that we don't want to buy any of their crap anymore, so let us instead make our own games in the image of the great companies we once knew and loved. This is a call to arms to be heard by fans everwhere. We must make fangames. We must rip graphics of Sonic and Mario games, and we must make our own. We must create a 3-D level-generator, akin to that in Donkey Kong Country, so we can make fangames of that. We must download Deus Ex editing software, and make mods of the game that are everything its first sequel should have been, and what future sequels will probably not get a chance to be. We may find enough talented programmers to ressurect Vigilante 8, though I doubt it.

It is time to fight for what we hold dear. If we want to play any alternatives to Halo and GTA, that aren't just inferior rip-offs of those games, then it is time to start making them ourselves. In addition, we must protest. Take to the streets outside corporate headquarters, and demand not be exploited and made to buy bad games for full prices any longer. Tell Nintendo we will boycott them, buying even less than we already do anymore, if they do not stop producing shitty spin-offs to return their franchises to their roots. We must flood companies with letters, telling them we miss them from the old days, and that we will not accept them dessecrating their own frachises and double-crossing their fans any longer. We shall overcome...

In other news, Rare has unveiled a new game--that isn't Banjo-Fucking-Kazooie 3! Instead, it's this gay-ass fruitfest called "Viva Pinata." Proceed to join me in mourning. Also, Disney has revealed a movie that looks to be a rip-off of Madagascar. It's name? The Wild (What else?).

Teen Titans is over, as far as I know. Hopefully, fan feedback will save it like it did Kim Possible, but if not, I may have to find another show to become obsessed with.

However, I don't remember the part of world history where Queen Hatshepsut of ancient Egypt signs treaties with George Washington and Peter the Great. But hey, it's a fun game, and all the anachronisms just make it good to chuckle at. Got it Monday, but it wouldn't run because it needed patching. So I spent six goddamned hours downloading the patch, going to bed early, and then waking up early, so I could play it.

There are some people you miss when they die. There are some that did not affect you, so you don't really care. And there are some who, when they die, just lead to annoying situations. That was the case with this local guy who died back when I was in high school. What did I think of him in life? More than anything else, I thought he was an ass. He was obnoxious. He liked crappy music, told very lame jokes. He memorized a monologue to do in some talent contest, and he never shut the fuck up with it afterward; every so often he'd start reciting this monologue to the people around him, just as he had before. Most likely, he was not very intelligent. But worst of all, he was a terrible swinger, going from one girl to the nbext, getting all romantic with them and then dumping them, leaving them heartbroken when he wanted to start fresh with another girl.

Now, none of that is to suggest I at all wanted him dead, nor was I happy when he did die. I'm not a monster. But geez, ever since he's been gone, he hasn't stopped being annoying, because he now is the most overrated member of our community ever. Cold feelings thawed towards him once he died, and to an extent it was acceptable, but it wasn't long before it became annoying. The large amount of people in our community who loved the poor guy (the rest of my family included) never shut up about how wonderful he was for the longest time. There were tons of parties thrown in his honor at school, and days that got set aside for remembering him approached the level of local holidays. All around the school, and soon, the community, paraphanelia was spread to remind us of him; anything he was obsessed was in the details of that paraphanelia, and his obsessions were already annoying back when he was still alive. Once again, that doesn't mean I wanted him dead, but I confess that I don't exactly miss him, and I don't see why anyone else does, either. If only people could keep the guy in their own minds in their own way, instead of being bombarded by constant propaganda making him an undeserving hero. This goes out to everyone: please don't view the dead with rose-tinted glasses. You could make a real ass of yourself with who you end up worshiping.

On a lighter note, I am pleased to have taken part and voted in the California special election, and we handed the "Abominator" his ass on a silver platter. His filthy plans to tread on us lie in ruins. Perhaps, democracy is not as dead as I thought. Of course, it is only at its strongest in Western Europe, but at least there is some comfort in knowing I am living under the lesser of two evils.

Aw, who am I kidding? GET ME THE FUCK OUTTA THIS SHITHOLE!!!!!!

Donkey Kong Country 3 for GBA has been eating up a lot of my time. Damn, I now remember why that was my favorite game for a long time in the SNES era. It's frustratibng, but its originality makes up for it. And all the new features lead me to believe Rareware might, just might, make a new DK game for the GBA or DS. Meanwhile Gamespot has given Kameo: Elements of Power a good review, and while I personally am not interested in that game, its success is good news for me, as it will help the once-great Rareware rise again.

Once my American Government test tomorrow is finished, I might do some art, maybe DKC fanart, or original Sonic characters. Stay tuned!

8 more days. Just eight more days from now, Shadow the Hedgehog is released, and I'll have something to do. I'm salivating. WAIT! (slaps face) Gah! What am I saying?! This game is embarassing! It's a walking, talking, running, gunning, joke! And as if being so hip and in-your-face didn't make it nauseating enough, now it also has the idiots from 4-Kids dubbing it over! When I saw a movie of the game and heard Knuckles talking, I nearly barfed! Sonic and Shadow sound okay, but who knows how many other characters are waiting to piss on me with their awful new voices? Barf! When I first saw Shadow looking for all the world like he was impersonating Dante, Leon Kennedy, and/or Alex Denton, I knew I would never view him the same way again. And now, it seems that there are many more Sonic characers whom I will not view the same way again, either.

It makes me sick how badly the gaming industry is fucking up! I'm still looking forward to Shadow, and I'm very excited, but damnit, I think it's sad that that is the sort of thing I get to look forward to. Whatever happened to really good games, like Vigilante 8, Deus Ex, or Banjo-Tooie? I don't know, but I have some sort of feeling the industry is heading towards another depression. Nintendo, once ahead of the game, is almost certainly going to throw in the towel before too long. I'm willing to bet the Revolution will be their last console ever. Atari and SEGA already have fallen into the pits, and Nintendo looks like they're next.

That's bad news for any gamers. If nobody replaces Nintendo, then Sony and Microsoft will be able to jack up their prices. And if one less company is around to compete with Microsoft, well, that's bad news for the whole world! But seriously, the new Nintendo has become quite a corporate monster in its own right, with its ridiculous new policies. As of late they are releasing short games and charging full price, outsourcing all of their good franchises to shitty developers who make shitty spin-offs, and to top it all off, they are promoting and overrating every awful game that has their characters on it to death on their site and in their magazine. I'll never put a corporation on a pedestal again.

Me, I hated optimism, and goddamnit, I still hate it. While I am not an all out pessimist who is always miserable, I disagree with any sort of philosophy telling me to make myself happy just by convincing myself that I am happy. I believe that sort of philosophy serves The Man, particularly in situations where he is well-to-do, and others aren't. I have the same desire to live a happy life as everyone else, but I vow to do so by being a resourceful man who never loses site of those things which make me truly happy, and will not quit until he gets them.

That may sound like a very optimistic outlook to you, but it is not. The goals are the same, but unlike optimists, I do not think they can be obtained through hard, clean work alone. No. Optimists believe this because they hold a high outlook of life, but me, I realize that between me and happiness is not merely a lot of work. No, there are people who stand in my way, namely my community--The Man. For as Jack Black once said, The Man is anyone who gets you down. They have harassed me, made me miserable, alienated me. But I learned one thing from them: optimism is bullshit. Life is never a matter of considering your cup half empty or half-full. No, life is a matter of realizing the truth: Either you are lucky enough to have a cup over half-full, or else you are cursed with a cup more than halfway empty. My refusal to convert to optimism in view of evidence that it was a beautiful but dangerous lie was the capstone in my alienation. I dropped out. Fuck all of them, I thought, and my views have barely changed since then. There are many good people out there--I met many of them here on DA--but they live outside my community. They say optimists live longer, and I believe it. They truly are happier. But me, I just won't go for it because I would so clearly be lying to myself. I have never liked lying to anyone, much less myself.

So for a while I lost all faith in society. Then came the Matrix--the first one, anyway. For most of us, the biggest effect that film has had on us is the alleged unspoken rule that you cannot make a good martial arts scene if it doesn't utilize bullet-time. But not me. Adventure is fun, but I was most impacted by the choices made by the warring characters, and how they're beliefs guided them. To me, the film was clearly a championing of people who hold the view, "Hey, yeah. Life sucks. And we could change it if we really wanted to. But if we convince ourselves we're already content, then we will lack the motivation to do so." Now it seems everybody (including the Wachowskis themselves perhaps) has lost sight of that. But not me. Since seeing that movie, "Take the Red Pill" remains my motto to this day. No matter how much the truth hurts, I vow to acknowledge it, because I believe that is the first step towards bettering it.

How does all this have to do with love? It explains why I've never experienced it, and, therefore, why I'm an awful mess. With the way I behave all neurotically all the time, people tell me I need to get laid so I'll ease up. They're probably right. Damnit, I get so horny sometimes I feel like my balls are bleeding. But if my mind cannot control my raging hormones, so I will not let the reverse be true, either. I am no advocate of exclusively Platonic love, but I certainly do not believe in sex for its own sake. Hence, I am very doubtful of my current habitat providing me with love. Damn, I hate the lot of them, and if I screwed a girl in spite of what I thought of her on the intellectual level, it would be going against everything I stand for. I breifly abandoned this philosophy when a very charming girl moved in from up North, but she soon changed for the very worse and she did not seem like me anymore, and I didn't like her anymore either. But it's not just the fact that great girls are hard to find around here that makes a love life hard for me. It's also because I don't even know if the ideal girl for me exists. Looks are important. She must have a face that doesn't look like the Wicked Witch of the West, and she must be in good shape--neither fat nor an anorexic. But there's plenty of that type even where I live! The real problem is personality; I don't fall in love for looks alone. 2) I feel no shame in squealing on people who break rules if it works in my favor.
3) I hate most of modern rock/pop music. Unlike most of us, I think the 1970s and 1980s ruled, music-wise.
4) I vastly prefer baths over showers.
5) I hardly ever give a damn about appearance. 95% of the time I just wear sagging shorts and a wrinkled T-shirt.
6) I am unusually sensitive for a man, and I dislike that society looks down upon sensitive men. I think if we were all sensitive, we'd make the world a better place.
7) I hate Geico. They are the scourge of commercial breaks.
8) I hate censorship. I refuse to listen to radio edits of songs or watch censored versions of movies on network television.
9) I support altering the first Amendment to disallow racist statements, on the grounds that they encourage breaking discrimination laws.
10) I hold that American democracy is, in effect, not a democracy, but a dictatorship of the media.
11) I hate my community.
12) I have five cats, two dogs, four chickens, and two goats.
13) I live in the countryside, but wish I didn't.
14) I readily acknowledge that the government institutions of many European nations are now vastly superior to America's.
15) I got the highest score in my Zoology class in College last year.
16) I'm going to be a toilet this Halloween!
17) Last Halloween I was Fawful, from Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga.

Okay, so they really are lazy bastards, who did a horrid job dubbing Sonic X, and obviously do not really know much or care about Sonic. Therefore, it's easy, and also justifiable, for a Sonic fan to hate 4Kids. But since SEGA gave all of their game voice actors the golden broom in favor of hiring the 4Kids voice-actors to work on Shadow the Hedgehog, now Sonic fans everywhere are still venting only at 4Kids, and not SEGA, as they should be doing.

Firing the voice actors was SEGA's doing. Replacing them was SEGA's doing. Apparently, this was done to add a sense of continuity to the Sonic universe. This, however, is a very stupid way to do it. A better way to add continuity would have been to make sure the Sonic X dub didn't suck in the first place. Since SEGA owns the license, they potentially have control over 4Kids with respect to Sonic. But instead they have let 4Kids control them. So now all Sonic fans must realize they can no longer blindly put SEGA on a pedestal, because now SEGA has shit in our faces. All capitalists do that at some point; it's a fact of life.

This is just history repeating itself. It is much the same with Nintendo fanboys talking about Rare. "Blah blah Rare sux for leaving Nintendo blah blah Microsoft sux for taking over Rare!" Guess what, idiots?! If your beloved big N hadn't sold Rare in the first place, this shit never would have happened! Nintendo justified their actions by pointing out that Rare had not been very lucrative lately, but they could have been a hell of lot more lucrative if Nintendo had not taken pains to cover up Conker's Bad Fur Day in order to preserve their stupid family image. This is Nintendo's fault, and blame rests with them not Rare or Microsoft. If it weren't for Nintendo's ridiculous actions, we would probably have at least one good DK game on Gamecube now, along with a lot more.

Ryan Drummond, the guy who has voiced Sonic in the American dubs of Sonic games for six years, wrote to SEGA of America asking when he would start recording the voice lines for Shadow the Hedgehog. You know what their reply was?



"YOUR ASS IS FIRED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"













I'm not kidding. The wording may have been somewhat different, but still, the fact remains that SEGA of America fired all of its voice actors (yes, ALL of them; not just Ryan) without even telling them about it. And who stands to replace them? Those scum who do the voices for the 4Kids version of Sonic X, of course! Why "of course", you ask. You mean the reason is actually obvious to you? No! Oh, fuck, no! I can see no motivation to do this! I mean, except for maybe Sonic and Eggman, the 4Kids cast doesn't even sound like they're trying to immitate the SEGA cast. Which means possibly, they've never even played the games!

So take a while to let this sink in for a second: SEGA has given the broom to very loyal, reliable employees, in favor of a bunch of yucks who don't give a rat's ass about Sonic?! What's the fucking point?! More info and a petition, here:

There is one faded symbol of the 1990s that I will never miss, however, and that is the most overrated movie in memory--Titanic. The student lounge at college today had that movie playing, and it succeded in reviving what I had tried to block from my memory ever since I saw it. I actually didn't see the film in theatres. Though at the time, every preppy stupidicus at school persecuted anyone who did not go see it (including the teachers who did not go see it), I never gave a damn for what anyone else thought about me. With respect to my community I say fuck the whole lot of them. But I digress. Anyway, I saw Titanic on TV, happy I didn't pay for it.

It seems quite fitting the most overrated film I know of is a representation of the most overrated genre of literature I know of--the tragedy. While I must agree that the ancient Greeks were a great people in many respects, I confess to being a life-long non-fan of their literature. Their religion seemed to be a bunch of drug-induced nonsense. And their invention of theatre had yet to come into its own. At the time of Greek theatre, tragedies were the main event. They had one purpose: to serve as people's daily does of mush until soap operas would be invented in a few thousand years. The idea was that if you ball your eyes out at a play, you'll do it less at life. Weird idea.

The Renaissance saw the revival of many classical stuff, the best of which was art, and worst of which was supposedly art--Tragedy. It served the same purpose then as it had in ancient Greece.

Today, few tragedies survive, and most of those that do are by Shakespeare. Romeo and Juliet is the most reverred, because it expanded the depth of the literary genre by adding a moral to all the mush. Few people still revere the form of tragedy that exists just to incite mush.

But they all forgot that when Titanic came along. In spite of being a very costly movie, with historically accurate sets, its plot was a very stupid love story, meant to promote new actors. And there was a long scene near the end, where they made their escape. Everything looked like it would turn out alright, and then it wasn't. Leonardo Dicapprio died, anyway. What the hell is the bloody point of that?! Just to make us sad?! But what kind of lesson does the movie teach?! That people are idiots; that's what. Not those on the Titanic, who were so self-riteous they didn't get enough lifeboats. They were dumb, but the real idiots were those people who gave this film ELEVEN FUCKING AWARDS when it was just a PAPER THIN STORY with a MUSHY-ASS ENDING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This is right up there with pogs as the stupidest thing of the 1990s.

Well, now Rare is hiring. But they are no longer the powerhouse they once were. I don't blame them. I blame Nintendo for not supporting Conker's Bad Fur Day, and making them turn Dinosaur Planet into Starfox Adventures, both of which hurt Rare. Finally, I blame Nintendo for selling Rare for their poor performance, which Nintendo itself was actually responsible for.

And now, as a second party to Microsoft, and an occasional partner of THQ, Rare has hardly made a ripple. I hear Grabbed By The Ghoulies was bad. Conker and the DKC series were good, but waiting this long only for remakes is unnacceptable, and they even ruined Conker by censoring it. Banjo-Kazooie: Grunty's Revenge was very good, while it lasted, but that was not very long. Rare has not wowed me for a long time.

Of course, that isn't to say other companies are much better. Nintendo's in about the worst downward spiral of all. Their ideas of stressing innovation in games, over depth and duration, are killing the company's prestige. Sonic Team has suffered from poor choices by Yuji Naka, who is clearly not as good a leader as he was a programmer and a level designer. That isn't to say the company hasn't done some things well, but he has generally let his franchise run amok, for better or for worse, and when I hear him voice his ideas for the series, I often gag.

Sony I know little about, though they appear to be the same platformer-obsessed producers they always were.

I don't know much about Microsoft, either, probably because there isn't much to know. They made Halo, that was it. Oh, yeah, they probably also perpetuated the Y2K Bug myth, but that's irrelevent.

Perhaps the worst casualty of the times is the Vigilante 8 series. It was such a wonderful franchise, and it could've been great in the new generation, so why did it have to go extinct?

I used to be able to temporarily forget my troubles by playing video games. Nowadays, however, the video game industry is increasingly becoming as marred as the real world.

Adding insult to injury, I myself am not the ideal video game worker, certainly not the one who will make a difference. I always run into problems on 3DS Max that I fear only hands-on help will solve, and I do not know anyone who can offer this. Hopefully, my old graphics teacher can help me when I go back to college in two days. I'm not taking a class with her, but if I find out what her office hours are, she may be able to help. But for now, life's a bitch.
