Unfortunately, even more technical problems have arisen so that I'm not quite able to do any photography yet.
Some of you may perhaps be wondering why exactly I haven't been putting any new images up recently, despite the fact that summer just happened and I had plenty of time to work on photography. The answer is quite simple. During the summer my computer started a slow spiral into madness, culminating last week in a recurring message flashing Warning! Failure imminent. Back-up and replace Hard-disk immediately.

Basically, what happened, is that my hard drive lost a lot of stability, possibly from the sheer number of times I reformatted it, but more likely from the fact that it is almost seven years old now. As a result, I could not actually run photoshop any longer, as it would take over 5 minutes to persorm a simple task such as resizing a photo. Hell, I could barely run firefox without my computer freezing every five minutes.

This should all be fixed soon, as I am getting a temporary replacement hard-drive soon, and will get a permanent one once I can afford it. Then hopefully working on photography won't be the tedious task it has been recently and I can actually get some work done. I've got a great roll of color photos from the Orientation program I helped with this summer (shot on Reala, my first excurion into higher-grade film) as well as about five rolls of black-and-white from various projects over the summer. Of course, I still need to process those, which will require me coercing the lab tech into secreting me in at untold hours of the night. 'Cause I like being sneaky like that. ::evil grin::

Mkay, so here's the deal. My school hasn't paid me for my hours, and I was forced to pay two months worth of loan payments this month. So. I need money, and fast. As such, I'm going to start selling artwork. Take a look through my gallery, and send me an e-mail at akuma.kei@gmail.com Lemme know if there's anything you want. If it's black and white, tell me your preference for Digital or Darkroom Printing. If it's color, it's Digital Printing only. I'm thinking about 10 dollars per print, but if that seems outrageous, let me know.

For the moment, the Jazz portrait series and any other shots of Chris Botti or Jane Monheit are off limits. I understand that this might be the big draws, but the legality is still not worked out, so I'm hesitant to make any profit on them.

And so it has begun. After a concert on Thursday, I now have photos of more than one Jazz artist, and so the series that I've been wanting to do is starting. Chris Botti played at Jazz Alley, and while I didn't take or use nearly as much film as I did with Jane Monheit, I still think I've got some good shots. Depending on where my seat is, I may also be able to take pictures of Wynton Marsalis next week, and that'll be three. And I know there are going to be other concerts I'll be going to in the near future. This is looking like it's going to be an awesome set.

So here's my question to all of you. Should I limit the series to one photo per artist? Or should I maybe use a couple of prints for each?

Oh, and now that I've got the series started, the Jane Monheit photos are going back up.

A few of you may have seen the Jane Monheit deviation I posted a couple days ago. If you look now, you'll notice that it is no longer on my site. There are a couple of reasons for this, but the main one is that I never actually got her permission, or that of ther agent, to take the photos.

Now, before you start worrying about me, no, her production company didn't start banging on my door with a cease and desist order. Nor do I expect them to. I would, however, like to get her express permission to show the photos, and am currently working to get that. Given the way she was playing the camera while onstage, I doubt it will be difficult.

How am I going about this? Well, at the moment I have two options. The first is that I am going to attempt e-mailing her. I expect this will prove to be quite fruitful, and am hoping that I can get in touch with her soon.

My more desired method, however, would be to meet her in person, which may not be as difficult as you imagine. I am not without my contacts, and will soon be seeing New York Voices live, and may even be going to a dinner party with them or taking a workshop from them. Since Jane studied with Peter Eldrige, I'm thinking it might be possible to talk with him and get in contact with her.

In any case, all of the negatives have been uploaded, and I'm going to be working on the production of the photographs throughout Winter break. I've got nearly 100 viable negatives from the concert, at least 10 of which have shown to be relatively photogenic. Once I have permission from Jane to exhibit them, I'll have them ready to show.

On another note, I've gotten an idea for another photo project, namely a Jazz tribute. I'm thinking that while I'm at the New York Voices concert, I will likely do more shooting, as well as during the dinner party if possible. If possible, I'm thinking of doing a portrait series of Jazz vocalists. It may be too large an undertaking now, but we'll see what it looks like come next week.

It turned out pretty much exactly as I wanted it, though the matting took quite a bit more practice than I had expected. Learning experience for I.

For those wondering what the piece is, I took "quiet reflection" and inscribed a Japanese poem into it. Then, thanks to , I printed it out and matted it with a double window black on grey. All in all, it looks pretty nice. I would prefer to show photography only, but this is a step in the right direction. I'm in Photography next semester, so I know I'll be showing prints from that. In the meantime, it feels nice to have something on display finally.

Friday evening, I saw some of the most wondeful skies in my entire life. Most of Friday it was rainy and aweful. Around 6:00, however, the clouds that had brought about the dreary drip turned right around and made some absolutely amazing sun reflections. We're talking that the sky looked as if it had ribbons of fire racing around it. Unfortunately, I didn't have my camera with me. And even if I had, I was driving for Bellagio's, so taking time to snap a few shots wouldn't have been a good idea... However, from this point forwards I am carrying a disposable camera in my glove compartment for just these kind of situations.

A few days ago I had a little tip money from Bellagio's left over, so I bought a 4-pack of Kodak 800 film. Needless to say, I made sure to take some time to get out and shoot soon afterwards, and a couple of opportunities presented themselves. First, St. Anthony's has some very interesting stuff, and though I didn't get many shots of the architecture (which isn't all that cool) I did manage to find some interesting views inside and outside the complex. As a tip of the hat to a friend, I tried out a window shot, so we'll see how that turns out. I also did various angles of a garden hose hanging in the gardens, so I'll see what kind of study I can make of that.

Today, the family went out in our new boat, the first time our whole family has gotten to do that since it was bought three weeks ago. One the way there and back I took a number of shots of the Columbia Gorge, and while out I took a few of passing boats, and one photo (which I really hope will turn out well) of my brother waterskiing.

The assignment for the first roll (I've begun giving myself assignments for rolls of film to try to force myself to learn) was the difference of F-stops. We'll see how they turned up and how that will help me figure out what F-stop to use on the fly whenever I feel so inclined. I also began notating all of my shutter speeds, f-stops, and lens and filter uses for my records and just random info in case anyone might be interested. (I noticed that just about every photo in Pop Photo has specs on the shot noted, so I figured it might be a good idea to start myself.)

As you may have already guessed from the lack of followup, I did not win the contest I entered. Ah well, at least I tried, and more people saw my work than normally do. I've been getting a lot of uplifting comments recently, for which I'm very grateful. Thanks to all of you who take the time to stop by and appreciate what I do.

Anyways, back on subject. I took in the first roll of film this evening and after about a 20 minute wait, I now have a processed roll of negatives to work from. Since my computer is currently at a friend's house, it may be a little time before I can post anything, but I'll try to get something up as soon as possible. Look forward to some interesting landscapes and river views in the near future!

I put up two pieces here today as well. While I was at a friends house on Monday, I put together a couple pieces I'd been thinking about. Fortunately, I"m now working two jobs. Unfortunately, that means I'm going to have little to no time during the rest of the summer to work on photography. Once I'm back at home, I'll have plenty of time to work on art. Hopefully I'll even have some time to do some street photography around Portland. I've got new toys to play with

Alrighty. I'm going to go through the Amanda series and re-scan and re-print all of the shots at 800 dpi. This should clear up some of the resolution problems as well as letting me see if there's anything I missed the first go-round. So if you see a deviation go up that you've already seen that's the reason. I'll start working on some more new shots as well. Recently got 2 rolls of film back from developing, and there are some good shots I'd like to put up.
