I've been wanting to practice photographing winter scenes for several years, and had thought I might try snowshoeing, but never got around to it. Well, this year suddenly there is more snow in the city than I think I've ever seen - enough to prohibit me from getting to work this morning - so I spent most of the day hiking around the lake with my camera. I only wish the light were not quite so flat for some of these shots.

Happy Holidays to all

For those who don't know, Bumbershoot is another word for 'umbrella.' It's also a three-day music & arts festival that happens every labor day weekend at Seattle Center.

For the first time in many years, I spent the whole weekend enjoying music, theater and comedy - including:
Vicci Martinez
Barcelona
Ian Moore
Blood Squad: Slasher Film Improv
Satiristas (with Marc Maron and Janeane Garofalo)
Band of Horses
Beck
Lushy
Tyrone Wells
Apocalypse in Coney Island: A Bumberlesque Cabaret
MySpace Show
Jakob Dylan
Stone Temple Pilots
Joe Goode Performance Group
Strange Fruit
Vert Ramp (skateboarding exhibition)
Scary Kids Scaring Kids
Death Cab For Cutie

I didn't think to take my camera until the second day, and didn't think to use it until that evening. Distance from the stage, low light, and lack of tripod contributed to the impressionistic results - an effect I rather like, and hope you won't mind.

So, I finally did what I've been meaning to do for a couple months: I took my camera and went for a hike around my city.

Seattle is a pretty great place - beautiful waterfront, attractive skyline, interesting architecture...not to mention Pike Place Market. In a single day I wandered through the Sculpture Garden, then to Belltown, along the waterfront to Pioneer Square, and through downtown to the Market. I finished off my last roll with a few shots of Lake Union from the Aurora/99 bridge, and a stop at Gasworks park.

There's lots more that I didn't have time for. I'll definitely get out hiking downtown again, sometime - a different route. And maybe I'll spend some time one day on Capitol Hill, aiming my camera at some of the wonderful residences near Volunteer Park. I haven't done much urban photography and I'm sure could use more practice!

Coming soon, I hope I'll have some good shots from Bumbershoot (music/arts festival) to share.

Well, I'm back from my first visit to Glacier National Park in Montana. It was absolutely wonderful! Clear, sunny weather four out of five days (one day of fog & rain), fabulous scenery, wildlife... Just an incredible place to be.

I camped at Rising Sun for a week and spent my days hiking in different areas of the park - including St. Mary Lake, Many Glacier, Logan Pass, and Two Medicine. For the day that it rained, I drove north into Canada and visited Red Rock Canyon in Waterton Park.

Although I never saw a grizzly bear (which Glacier is known for), I did see two black bears hurrying across the road at different times when I was driving. I also saw mountain goats, big-horn sheep, several families of deer, a couple rabbits (cottontail?), a couple grey foxes, plenty of squirrels & chipmunks, and some giant crickets & grasshoppers.

Unfortunately, I don't pack enough lens power to effectively photograph wild animals, so you will find mostly scenic landscapes added to my gallery. Enjoy!

Well, it's been more than two months since I've updated my gallery. I have several rolls of film waiting to be developed, and my camera needs a new battery.

In the meantime, I've been playing with a wonderful new toy that a good friend of mine gave me for a birthday present: a Nikon Coolpix digital camera. I'm learning how to use the different settings, and overall I've been quite pleased with the quality of images. (I'm still attached to my film SLR, though - I do love my polarizing filter!)

Photos uploaded today were all taken with my digital camera, including a bunch of flower pics from my mom's garden, a few vacation shots from my weekend at Long Beach (WA), and a handful of motorcycle images (several bikes from my dad's collection).

That's all for now!

Greetings, friends.

This week I am updating my gallery with some older images scanned from prints. You'll recognize them by their black or white borders. Most of these are old enough that I can't readily recall specific dates or even the year they were taken - just the location, and my memories from the journey. There are even a few B&W photos included, dating back to my college years.

I borrowed a friend's scanner - an older Epson model - which, unfortunately, doesn't yield the highest quality. I took the liberty of enhancing most of the images with color correction in photoshop - something I normally never do. I have always been something of a photo purist, and don't usually manipulate images digitally - except occasionally to crop the frame, maybe.

I am looking forward to the hiking season, and hope to take my camera out again, soon.

Cheers!

Welcome to my gallery.

What you will find here are mostly nature images from my various travels and excursions. Photography has been a hobby of mine for many years, beginning with my darkroom training in school.

I used to take lots of black & white pictures of people. Now I take lots of color pictures with no people.

Enjoy
