I've managed to maneuver myself into a quiet zone devoid of deadlines, pressure and most importantly stress. But in doing so I've had to walk away from the "drawing board." Nothing permanent, just something I like to do to recharge my batteries. Having a full time job not related to art allows me that luxury. This usually happens in the winter, where conventions are non-existant...no art or inspiring conversations to jump start the imagination. But thanks to a local art group (www.sketchcharlotte.com) I may just sneak back in without telling anyone! Besides, the sketchbook isn't going to fill itself now is it?!

This year had to be the most fun I've had since I was a kid diving in quarter bins back in the late 80's! We amped up our involvement this year more than the previous two and it's starting to pay off! People recognized us and our sketchbooks and even requested sketches! The guys at the Dollar Bin (www.thedollarbin.net) hosted us and our sketchbooks this year and even let us occuopy their booth for a good chunk of the weekend, Between Mark, Terence and myself we must have done over 50 free sketches on the back of our 2009 sketchbook! If you came by the booth and picked one up, we thank you, it means a lot! I've posted a few that I managed to scan before they went out the door in my gallery.

I also got to participate in a very cool jam piece created for the Heroes art auction! (finished pic posted in my gallery) It's not everyday that I get to have my work next to the likes of Andy Runton, Chris Schweizer, Budd Root, Buddy Prince, Nat Jones, Bradd Parton, J Chris Campbell, Duane Ballenger, Rob Ullman, Ben Towle, Francesco Francevilla, Mark Godby, Faylnn Koch, Mitch Rogers, Roger Langridge, Dean Trippe, David Peterson, Loston Wallace, Josh Latta, Guy Davis, Christian Slade, and Danielle Corsetto. (yeah I named them all!) This was one of the highlights of the weekend for me. Not only to have my work stand with theirs, but to help collect their work for the piece...simply mind blowing! Thanks to everyone who participated and even moreso to Brian, Adam, Devin, Kris and Ted for making that happen! From what I hear Mike from Planet Comics in Anderson, SC won it, so I may just have to make a road trip!

As for the show itself, I touched base with old friends and made some new ones as well. This weekend is so special, makes me want take some time off and hit a few more cons (Dragon Con, Baltimore and the Greenville Comic Con are distinct possibilities!) It also kick starts my creative juices. So hopefully I can capitalize on this rush and kick it up a notch on the commissions I have remaining!

And while I have my creative juices flowing, I'd like to see what I can do to increase the traffic, and overall activity of my devART site! Which means I'll be doing some free sketches for a few lucky followers who participate on my site...stay tuned!

- Brandon/Big Dog

btw - Two of my Pro friends just joined deviantART...can't recommend these guys enough. Head over and check them out!
Jason Latour - [link]
Chris Brunner - [link]

([link]) Each of us have supplied 8 pieces of original art for this year's model...24 pages with a cardstok cover!

And like last year...THEY'RE FREE!
I've been privileged to sit in on a local art group called SKETCH CHARLOTTE for the last year or so. I've met some really cool people each with their own unique talent. As cool as it was to find fellow artists, we just weren't being that productive at the meetings. Well two about 2-3 months ago that all changed! We're pushing each other, inspiring to create and let me tell you it's been a BLAST! WE even had a few local pros sit in our last meeting! Well all this inspiration has lead us to make it 2x a month now and I couldn't be happier about it!

I'm hoping to start posting more art here and keeping the journal active with thoughts & ideas I get stemming from our meetings. Please hold me to it, I need al the motivation I can get and there's none better than feedback from your peers! And it goes without saying that I appreciate each and every comment, favorite and watch I get!

With that being said, I feel an "evolve" coming on, but I don't quite know what it is yet. I've been questioning whether or not to do another sketchbook for the 2009 con season, more tee shirts, prints or more commissions. Any ideas any of you may have are greatly appreciated! I guess I should just be happy that I'm having fun at this again!

Until next time, go to and do!!!

- Brandon/Big Dog

Whew...I made it! Life's roller-coaster, aka my wedding, is behind me and I'm ready to get back to a sense of normalcy. It was a fantastic ceremony and I enjoyed every minute of it, but as some of you can attest, it will wear you out! I'm hoping to get back to the drawing board soon and get to cranking out stuff for next year's sketchbook, a few commissions and maybe even an original story that's been brewing in the back of my head.

I've been staying inspired checking out artists here on DA, hanging with my buddies at Sketch Charlotte, and a host of drawings & sketches I've seen that have been trickling out from recent conventions. It's an exciting time and I want to make the most of it!

On an equally sad note, it looks as if the Newsarama Art Group as we know it is coming to an end. I'm hoping we can keep a single thread alive to stay in touch and share our work and ideas, but it's not looking good. If you are or were at any time a member, a fan, or even a lurker, now might be a good time to peek in and say some last words for the Group. It was an amazing ride and I've made some really great friends in the process.
Thanks to everyone who ever participated in those threads and a very special THANKS to Superginraix for running the show...I appreciate it Dan!

Whatever happened to having just one place to put all your stuff? Now it seems like you have to have a myspace account...something on facebook, a blog and even a deviantART page! Not to mention threads & forums at other boards because you frequent them. The Dollar Bin, Newsarama, the Outhouse, Comic Bloc, Pencil Jack, Digital Webbing, CBR, Comic Space, Gutter Zombie...the list goes on...and on. The worst part about it is that you really want to contribute exclusive material for all of these sites and its members, yet you end up feeling repetitive, even over extended. I want to cut it down to one site, but I just can't. It's not like I'm a professional that's work demands its own viewers, but I do love the interaction & feedback. Don't get me wrong, I don't think I deserve a site that people would visit anymore than the next amateur artist, I'd just like a site where everyone knows your name...where people would visit, leave feedback (good or bad) and I could grow as an artist and even meet new people along the way. I guess I need to track everything and see which one is actually being looked at and go from there. Or just stop bitching about it and carry on with business as usual.

The one good thing is that I'm not relying on any of these sites to generate a job or even income for me. I do what I do because I enjoy it. Not because I need to pay the bills. God bless artists that are able to do that full time and actually succeed...part time is hard enough! I can't imagine waking up every morning with the pressure of your livelihood staring back at you from an 11 x 17 blank sheet of paper. Every...day...man that's scary!

I've realized this side of the rope allows you to come and go as your imagination and creativity pleases. If I take three months off to pursue other activities (getting married being the foremost) not that many people will notice. But they will notice when you come back with something new...at least I hope they do!

I'm not really sure where I'm heading with this, but I just felt like sharing. Guess that's what the journals are for. Hell, I'm not even sure anyone other than me are reading these things! Ah well, guess I should be content that the opportunity for someone to read it is there and keep moving until the next one comes around!

Hang in there,
Big Dog

sites mentioned:
[link]
[link]
[link]
[link]
[link]
[link]
[link]
[link]
[link]
[link]
[link]
[link]
