I grew up in a small town that was
home to at one time the 5th largest
lead smelter in the world. The
smelter opened in 1888, my ancestors
were there. During its life of
operation, I have had family employed
there. It was a fixture in the
landscape that to the locals was just
simply there just like any mountain
or lake that surrounded the area.
It just had funny smells and made
some strange noises. It was thought
of as something that was always there
and something that would always be
there. In the old days when you
graduated high school (or not) you
knew that you could get a job there
and make some decent money. Later
the guarantee of a job wasn’t so
definite but it was still an option.
I worked there for a summer and a
Christmas break to get some money
for college. I was the sixth gener-
ation of my family to work there.
My dad started the day before he
graduated high school in 1965. He
worked there until it closed in 2001.
The reality of the entity that would
always be there suddenly not being
there anymore really shocked my dad
and I swear he aged 10 years those
last few months. He was a blacksmith
for most of the time he worked out
there. The last two years he drove
a loader around moving ore from place
to place. He took the loader job to
get out from under the thumb of the
guy that was in charge of “the shops”.
To make a long story short, this guy
put the squeeze on my dad to make
himself look better and nurse some
childhood grudges. He stressed my
dad out so much that he said hell
with it and transferred to another
end of the plant. When everyone else
was getting laid off this son of a
bitch got to keep his job and live
in a mansion for free. Yes a mansion.
Now the smelter is being demolished.
I work for the company that engineered
the demolition and is doing the over
sight of the demo. I get the privi-
lege to be out there logging all the
scrap that is getting buried in a cont-
ainment facility truck by truck. It is
so surreal to be out there watching
things fall down that “were always
going to be there”. I like the fact
that I get to put the place to rest when
my family was part of building it and
operating it over the years. The best
part about it is learning that that son
of a bitch that hassled my dad so much
is getting laid off next month. I get
to be out there every day and get to see
that guy stress out about losing his job
and probably getting booted out of the
mansion.
I am a huge fan of poetic justice. The
only thing that would make it better is
if he got busted for steeling something
from there as well.

Forever isn't really that long after all


So Steve's world was turned upside down recently. His wife doesn't want to be married to him anymore and he is none too pleased about that. She has a lot of things she needs to work out. Steve really tried hard to keep it all together but one person can't make it all work. Everyone who knows him knows that he was very devoted to her and this has been a very trying time for him. We thank all of the well wishers and the your better off sayers and we agree with you. Steve will be alright and he is actually getting the gears turning again to create some new stuff. He has a big order in for some soap dishes and piggybanks but after that, we are betting there is going to be some real twisted stuff showing up in his gallery. He says he is really looking forward to it and it feels good to be able to think creatively again instead of being blocked. All the negativity is getting purged from the air at Steve's house and a makeshift studio is being erected in his basement.
Like we said, we are drooling with anticipation for some new oddities to come out of there.

Damn forest fires are making everything shitty around here…..all hazy, stinky….ash settles on your car and you can actually see it floating in the air like snow flurries. It's like sitting next to a campfire but you can't leave it. The sun is red in the evening sky and the moon has often been orange. Most of the smoke we are breathing here in Helena, Montana is from Idaho.....Idaho is a ways away.

Autumn is coming and soon the snow will fall and put out the fires. It will all be nice and green next year and the Hot Shots that battled the blazes made good money this summer.

:blahblah: Some of you know but most of you don't.....I MOVED!! And did I ever mention how much I hate moving? :-X I am so glad it is done. The good part about it (besides the fact that it is done) is I get to build a studio in the back yard. There is a 28'x38' shed in the back corner of the property that I am converting into my studio.....as soon as I get the time. I can't wait to finally have room to make stuff and be able to make more that one or two things at the same time. I have to make myself think of other things by 8:00 ish or I can't fall asleep at night I'm so excited. :XD:
The people that bought our old house were so happy that I left the doorbell I made on the house. They thought it was the coolest thing they ever saw. I never heard anything positive or negative about it the whole time we were selling the house. All those people looking at the house and no one said a thing about the strange ass doorbell I made. I was very pleased that they liked it.

I have been squeezing out little soap dishes all month and finally got caught up. There is a local lady that has been making soap for a while and selling it at the farmers market and needed some soap dishes. My mom being the nice lady that she is told the soap lady about me and poof....I am making her soap dishes. Now I am caught up to her demand for a while I can go back to making fun things. I NEED to make creepy things so I can start to sleep again at night but I also have this need to make gardeny things. I am working on a little mining car (the kind you see miners use in shafts). Little tractors with wagons also. I like growing things and when I was a kid you couldn't keep me out of the dirt with my trucks......So its all coming together now that I am older.


I have also been making labels for all of the stuff my mom is selling at the farmers market. She has been making dog treats, either biscuits or dehydrated veggies.

All the Forest Service cabins have these logs that people that stay there are encourage to write in and tell about their stay. We were reading them and previous guests were telling about how they ran into mountain lions on the way to the outhouse. I already had this in mind but my wife never even thought about them and you could just see her get the heeveyjeevies. To top this off there is a pamphlet on grizzly bears. Now did I mention that Jenn has to go pee about every ten minutes? Guess who got to escort her to the outhouse?


I just kept thinking about how vulnerable we are while we are sitting down to take care of business.

So I was very pleased with my decision to part with the little piggies.
. I arrived at the auction and Peter walked up to me and told me that the pigs were the talk of the show. I went over and had a look and sure enough they generated some good action and had a small crowd around them. One lady told Peter not to touch them when he was looking at them. After the bidding was over two women approached me about them and asked me to make more.

Became that I work for an engineering company so I have a thing for construction equipment

I have been way behind on getting my Christmas presents started and am paying the price now. I had all sorts of stuff come up this fall and never got the early start I was hoping for. Got that all done at least so now I can focus on making some family members their gifts. The good part about it is that my work has gotten better and everyone at least likes getting stuff I made now. I have 15 days of vacation to take before the end of the year also, think I can do it? I think I will be lucky to get 4.

All work has been under the strict supervision of

I am hoping to keep this momentum up for a while also. I have a charity auction to help kids with HIV/AIDS coming up in February that I normally have to scramble for just as bad as Christmas but with any luck I will be done in the middle of January. The event is the Hearts and Humanities Valentines Day thingamajig. It has been in the basement of the cathedral for the last few years and attendance was down last year. So all you fine people in the Helena Montana area please keep a look out for the week before Valentines Day or talk to Sandy at Birds And Bisley's and help out some kids by bidding on some art. There are a few world famous people that have their work sold there.

Been so busy it aint even funny. Spent a week in Weatherford Texas. That was very nice. Nice and HOT. We drove an inherited 1980 Toyota two wheel drive pickup back to Montana (1,550 miles). That is a vinyl seat and no AC for those keeping score. It was 104 degrees until we crossed into southern Colorado when we just missed a tornado. It cooled down about 15 degrees instantly and it felt so good. We got home and rehydrated and a week went by uneventfully until my wife Jenn got appendicitis. We spent from 11:30 AM to Sunday 3:00 PM in the hospital. The bummer part of it (not that it really compares to what Jenn went through) was there was a big deal going on at The Archie Bray Foundation that weekend and I was volunteering so I could get in free and not pay $160 to see all the presentations and demo’s put on by guest artists. I really wanted to see Sergei Isupov and I heard his presentation was unbelievable. My good buddy that just had to have a video camera a few years back forgot all about the fact that he had one and didn’t film it for me either. So Jenn was telling me to go ahead and go to it and not miss out. I told her no way in hell, staying with her is where I needed to be. Her mom told me I could just go next year and that is when I informed her that it was a once in a life time thing. Got kinda quiet after that. Good news is, Jenn got her appendix taken out before it ruptured thankfully but the surgeon said she had endometriosis on it and around other “stuff”. The surgery irritated it and now she is miserable plus they saw other “stuff” in there and we probably wont be able to ever have kids.
Things are getting better though and I am getting time to make things again. But can you believe that Jenn got mad at me for not going to the Archie Bray thing? I will never figure her out.

You say my art is weird? Thank you!

I think it is weird because I am weird and its just a reflection of my outlook on everything. I am a huge fan of surrealism so I like to sprinkle a little of that into the mix. What sets me apart from the rest? I think pottery for the most part seems feminine and passive to me or at least draws a feminine element to it and I am trying to give it a shot of testosterone without being sexist or macho. Trying to be shocking but not disgusting or offensive. I like things that you see everyday but don't nitice them any more so when I make something from the mundane world, it looks outlandish and bizarre but all I have done is change the size of it or put body parts where they don't normally belong.
Mostly, I want to make you take a second look and think about what it is you are looking at.

I have some WIP stuff to show off. I figured it would be good to take some shots of these before I fired them incase they didnt make it out in one piece.

Here is my first commisioned piece. This is a keg tap handle for a friend of mine that brews his own beer. Yes that is supposed to be a ball gag :nod: . There is another view of it here


Here are some little implements of self gratification I have been trying to complete for a while. I was going to enter these in a show but I didn't get them done in time. There is still a slim chance I can but its real slim.

Anyhow, Im hoping to have all my honeydo's done this weekend so I can cook some of this stuff and have some nice pretty finished things to show off soon!

I have so much stuff I am trying to complete right now. I have made so many things recently that I have to glaze its not even funny. I hate glazing. I love making stuff but man I hate glazing. I also made my first commission piece last week. Its a tap handle for a guy I know that brews his own beer. He wanted me to make him one after he saw my door bell I have it drying now, it is seriously one of the coolest things I have ever made. It is a baby head with a ball gag in its mouth complete with harnesses and a buckle. Hopefully it holds up.
I will also be glazing up some more fishing lures. I sold a few and have had some waiting for almost a year to be glazed so I better get at it.
There is a show I was invited to partake in coming up next month also so I have to get squared away for that.

Mostly though, I cant wait to post more stuff on here to see what people have to say about it.
