The computer problems I mentioned wound up becoming a complete computer meltdown, and while we have another one now, being hideously busy and not having a scanner hooked up managed to keep me away even longer. (studying for the ACT eats up your time like a sonofabitch)

But, just got the scanner hooked back up, and I've been practicing a lot while away, so expect to see stuff up in the near future. Still hella busy, but meh.

What a rip-off....

Sorry that there hasn't been much in the way of new artstuffery. I've been hella sick for over a week, so that's kind of put a damper on any drawing. Sorry. D:

Though, I -did- get to re-watch a movie I saw a while ago and has now made it onto my favorites list, called Wristcutters: A Love Story. Trailer [link] . Great movie, really funny.

Also, all this snow needs to melt. Srsly, it's forty degrees out, why is it not melting?!

Vacation was great. Large amounts of good food and good people. A belated good Festivus, merry Christmas, and happy New Years to everyone!

Saw the Golden Compass and I Am Legend. Loved them both, though both had endings that pissed me off. The Golden Compass less so, since that at least had a good reason for cutting off the ending of the book, but I Am Legend's ending....grraaaarghhhh! Why?! WHY!?

Both had great CGI, though, and I felt like The Golden Compass did the book justice, even if they did chop up the plot in some odd ways. I Am Legend was a good movie, but not really comparable to the book because it was -so- different. If you liked the movie, I'd really recommend reading the book.

Also got to try out Rock Band, which is awesome once you get the hang of it. And that does take some doing; it's not nearly as simple as Guitar Hero. The drums are much harder then they look, and I stuck mostly to the guitar. (which the owner, my step-nephew had already managed to fuck up despite only owning the game for three days)
Though I did wind up singing "Timmy and the Lords of the Underworld". Turns out that even if the song is mostly just singing "TIMMMAY" over and over, it's still difficult...

Got some new pens, Copic Fineliners. I'd had a bad experience with the similar Sakura pens completely sucking, so I was wary, but holy crap these are awesome. Love, love, love. And they're waterproof, so I finally have something decent to ink watercolor/marker pictures with. I think I'm in love...

All in all, it was a great time. Even if I did come home with a bad cold from my sister and her husband... one which I'd managed to avoid getting up until the day before I left. Oh well.
I miss Chicago already, though

This is indeed Halloween. The holiday for horror movies (of varying quality), cheap candy, being able to get away with wearing large amounts of black and orange, ghost stories, and walking down the street covered in fake blood to get nothing more then a "Nice costume".

Good times. Already did my wild partying on Saturday night, spent keeping small children from murdering eachother with costume props. (I dressed as Little Red Riding Hood)
But, hey, I won a cake. 8D

Spending the actual Halloween evening watching old horror movies dug up from the Internet Archive. (long live public domain!) Including Night of the Living Dead (the original), The Last Man on Earth, Nosferatu, and The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari. If you haven't heard of most of those, don't be surprised - but they're all highly recommended

So, National Novel Writer's Month starts tomorrow and I'm pretty excited. I tried it last year, but sort of crashed and burned. Since I spent the past month outlining, I'm cautiously optimistic for this year. I've also got numerous friend alternating between encouragement and death threats

WARNING: Videogame ranty rant rant. Followed by gushing about games I'll probably not get to play until they've been out for three years.

I decided to catch up with some of the hype on the games I've been looking forward to today, as I've rather fallen out of touch since before my uber-absence. Silent Hill 5/0rigins, Resident Evil 5, Devil May Cry 4, etc.
Last year it was announced that the main character of the Devil May Cry series, Dante, was no longer going to be the main character for this game. Instead, we get some new kid named Nero... who looks, fights, and talks almost exactly like Dante. Dante now, apparently, is a villain.
Uh....huh....

Understandably, there was a minor uproar over this as indignant fans pointed out that they played the damn games for the character the games are about. There are no multiple main leads like some series such as Resident Evil has; the games are about Dante, the devil of the title.
Shortly afterwards, it was announced that Dante would still be a playable character. This mollified the angry fans somewhat; hey, at least he's still there, right? So what if he's been usurped by some prettyboy? It'll still be a DMC game, right? Numerous fans even declared their support for Nero. (unsurprisingly, most of these fans were teenage girls - the man has a fanclub here on DA already)
Despite the seething fury still present, I agreed.

What's wrong with this picture, kids?

#1: Dante getting the shit beaten out of him by Prettyboy. What... the... hell. Uh-uh. No. Just no. Dante defeated the emperor of hell, the ancient guardians of the gateway to hell and his own super-powered twin brother. Getting his ass whooped by some Dawson's Creek reject is more or less impossible, I don't care if he is some sort of posessed Linda Blair wannabe. Doesn't stack.

#2: "KYYYYYRRIIIIIIEEEEEEEE!"
Gag.
I've no problem with there being more plot in DMC, or romantic themes. But this apparent overarching thing with the Dante-look-alike and the Trish-look-alike makes my head hurt. Since when is DMC about irritating teenyboppers and their relationship issues? The Devil, apparently, is now a whiny emo bitch.
Sigh.

Just...why. Why? WHYYY?? There was nothing wrong with Devil May Cry, damnit! You don't need to go and rip it up to shreds and churn out some pale imitation in the name of innovation.... and that's what this is shaping up to be. As if the disappointment of the anime being painfully mediocre and the manga getting cancelled wasn't enough...
Disgusting.

On the upside, such as it is, the graphics look great, and hay, look! Lady and Trish! Looking all snazzy and re-designed. Dante's new design looks great, too.
Not like we'll be seeing much of it.
*bitter muttering*

Bah.

Fortunately, the other games look great - the new RE5 trailer made me feel particularly smart, as I figured yon mystery man was Chris from the start.

I'm glad they're keeping the basics of the RE4 gameplay - that was an example of a well-done overhaul. A few elitists bitched about it, but it was really a breath of fresh air. It changed the mechanics that needed help, but it was still RE. (take some notes, DMC staff)
The graphics look absolutely gorgeous, especially the environments and the lighting. Chris is looking good, too.
The new villains/zombies/monsters are creepy as hell. They seem to be keeping in the Ganados sort of style, which, while certainly different, works well.
I'm curious as to who this female lead they show in the very end is, though. Apparently she's supposed to have already been in the series, but I can't think of any blondes except for the kid in the second one and Rebecca from RE0.
All in all, shiny. 8D

Just... damn. A lot of people were afraid that because Team Silent wasn't behind it, it would by definition suck, but this looks like one hell of a game. Real shame this is going to be PSP only

-_- So, apparently our computer made like a communist and decided working was for capitalist pig dogs. We had to reformat it to get it to work again.

Whiiiiich... means every file I've collected over the past three years is gone. Including the raws for almost every picture I've done while on DA, every picture I had in the works, several gigs of music, a couple anime series, god knows how many AMVs, manga series, random images, and all the writing I've done this year.

Thank god my friend :devphoenix-firewolf: convinced me to back up my writing early this year. I would have done it more recently, but we don't have any writable discs and money's been a little tight for stuff like that lately. (I'm so glad I just updated my iPod though, and that Precious [tablet] is okay. *hugs them both*)

And I'm frickin' sick AGAIN. This is ridiculous! I got food poisoning over the weekend and I was sick just a couple weeks ago. What the hell? Are all my antibodies on vacation?

He was one hell of a person, a great joker, a WW2 vet, and generally as someone said, "one cool cat".

Hopefully I'll be able to draw while gone. Probably lots of stupid demi-humorous doodles, as being around the extended family for large amounts of time seems to bring that out.

Not looking forward to it at all. It's not the funeral part, and I like seeing my siblings, but I do -not- get along with my mum's side of the family. And all the sibs are leaving on sunday....I get one or two merry days alone with the extended fam.

WARNING: Much rambling about a weirdly cool dream and the RE movie. Ye be warned.

I haven't updated since February? Where does the time go...

Believe it or not, I really have been working. Just...not producing anything worth gallery-izing

So, I finally saw all of the Resident Evil movie. I saw part of it a couple years ago on TV and liked what I saw (zombiedog! 8D) so when I saw it at the library I had to check it out.
Of course, I loved it. One of my elder sisters who utterly loathes that movie will probably want to throttle me, but she clearly has no taste.

Seriously, though, it was a very fun movie. No, it wasn't particularly deep or whatnot, but it's not supposed to be. It's based off of a friggin' horror game, what do you expect? It was entertaining, likeable, had some nice creeps, and well-made considering all the budget woes they had while doing it.
(now I really, really want to see the second one)

A lot of people, said sister included, make the mistake of assuming that people who like zombie flicks just like them because they want mindless action, and that the movies are just about the zombies. Uh, no. Some cheesy B-movies are, yes, but the good ones aren't about the zombies, they're about the people stuck in a ridiculously fucked up situation and how they deal with it. 28 Days Later is the epitome of this.

Anyway.
I'm hijacking this to discuss yet ANOTHER weirdly cool dream I had. Aren't you excited?!
This one takes the cake for being weirdly cool, though, and was realistic enough to be slightly creepy. Here's hoping it's not prophetic...*looks over shoulder nervously*

The dream started out with me and the fam staying at my sister in Iowa's place, as we frequently do. There'd been a zombie outbreak, but it was still pretty minor, just a few scattered slow, shambling zombies.

I was talking to my mom who was thinking that we maybe should head back home. My sister thought we should all just stay put, it was going to be fine, but I convinced my mom that we had to get the hell out of the city, since there were less people to get infected and if it came down to the worst situation, our house in the middle of nowhere was more cut out to be a defended position. (apparently I'm still thinking back onto all my experience with zombie movies even in my dreams)

My mom got on her cellphone to arrange stuff so we could head home and I putzed around, looking out windows to see what shape the city was in. I remember this part well, because it was really creepy...the streets were almost completely deserted, and a few people were packing up and leaving.

Eventually my eldest brother, who was also visiting, wanted to walk around for whatever reason, and I went with him. He decided to go and check on the neighbors in this kind of run down apartment upstairs, which I thought was a bad idea because we needed to get ready to leave and the apartment was small and easy for him to get backed into a corner in.

Regardless, he went over and I waited to watch his back just in case. The dream sort of switched to his point of view in the apartment, which was hella creepy...have I ever mentioned I'm slightly claustrophobic? And the apartment was really, really small, dark and cramped? Eesh.

The apartment was fine, but when we got out into the back room of the building there was a zombie that had gotten in. I somehow knocked the zombie onto the ground and killed it stomping on the back of it's neck to snap the spine. (because, apparently, they were like the T-virus zombies of RE, and you just have to sever the spine or hit the brain instead of decapitating them)

Brother and I hurry the hell back to the apartment where everybody's getting ready to leave, and apparently we're ALL heading back to our house. The city's mostly deserted except a couple kids messing around with a zombie, and we go home. Back home everything seems fine and everybody heads inside to unpack, figures it's all okay now, blah blah.
Outside, I'm doing something constructive before it storms, and I run into another zombie, which I somehow killed with a shovel, and I head inside to start getting the house ready for a siege.

Dun dun dun? Maybe I shouldn't have watched RE before bedtime. Nice to know that my zombie killing skills are in proper working order...

On a sort of not-at-all-but-kinda related note, go read Midnight Mass by F. Paul Wilson. WARNING: Much rambling about the Silent Hill games and referencing them, as well as movie/game spoilers. Ye be warned.

I finally got to see the Silent Hill movie!

I've wanted to see it ever since the trailers started coming out. (I'm a horror fan, so I thought it looked awesome)
Since then I've gotten acquainted with the games themselves and STILL wanted to see it. My bum of a sister V-rad swore that she'd rent it for me when she was back for winter break (I can't, as it's rated R) and watch it with me...but it was not to be.
So, imagine my glee when I found it on youTube. God bless the internet...

As you can no doubt tell, I loved it 8D It's not often you get to see well-done horror these days that doesn't get into the realm of so terrifying you can't sleep for a week or fall into cheese and idiocy.

The fog...the glorious fog...*eyetwitch* that was really, really damn good CGI. On the other hand, having actual actors for the monsters and them NOT being CGI was also spectacular. The Janitor made me extremely glad I don't regularly have to use public restrooms....and the nurses reinforced my dislike of hospitals. Nyaaaaaagh!

The atmosphere was perfect. The crumbling town, the fog, the ash and the flaming mine shafts, spectacular. And the way it changes too and from the otherworld...christ...that was awesome. When the siren went off for the first time I got goosebumps....same with when the radios started crackling when they saw the first of the straightjacket things. WHEEEEEEE!

I think part of the reason I liked it so much is because I'm very susceptible to horror movies, but I was able to watch this by myself in the dark at night, on a foggy night no less, and slept just fine. But while I was actually watching it? Nicely creepy.

Anyway.
Plot wise....I dig it. Personally, I think they should have stuck with the videogame plot since I think it was easier for people to follow, but, this one was a fine adaption. The way they changed the cultists into witch-burners worked just fine and was nicely creepy.
My one major plot complaint, though.... *deep breath*

WHY THE HELL IS HARRY A WOMAN!?

I have no problem with Rose, as she's basically Harry anyway, but WHY did they feel the need to change that? I -liked- Harry, and they didn't change the basic personality enough to justify it. It seems like the director didn't understand the concept of "if it ain't broke, don't fix it". Appicable to the plot and characterization.
....and she looks like an adult version of Heather.

The actress for Cybil (policewoman) was awesome, though. No, she didn't look -exactly- like the game, but there's a limit on how much resemblance to polygons you can get from the human face. Besides, appearance doesn't matter; she had Cybil's attitude and personality dead-on.

Poor Cybil...game OR movie, she gets utterly screwed over D: I always liked her character... I had no qualms with the gore, bodies, Pyramid Head playing flayer, but I was wincing when she was getting beaten and got all teary-eyed when she was burned.
Dead, but not forgotten. Rock on, Cyb.

Speaking of Pyramid Head...I admit, he made me chuckle. Mostly because every time he showed up I kept expecting James to pop out of a closet and start asking if anyone had seen his wife. I'm a geek like that.

I loved the scenes in the school...all very well done, even if I kept mouthing "run, bitch, run!" occasionally. I knew by me spidey sense that locking the bathroom door was a Bad Idea...

Alessa laying the smackdown on the cultists at the end = pwnage. Big time. Go go go!

The bad part, though...

What the hell kind of ending was that?! She...they..he...but...what?? Even the bad endings of SH were more resolute then that! Whoever thought that was a good idea needs to have a paycut and a severe caning. Jackass!

The dialogue wasn't spectacular either. My friend wasn't kidding when they said that about 1/3 of the whole thing was yelling single word names.... "Sharon!" "Rose!" "Witch!"
It wasn't glaringly bad, but, eh.
Lisa Garland being a one-scene character. I don't need to go into detail, I hope. Poor Lisa...she also gets screwed over. (for those who don't know; Lisa = Alessa's nurse. She was an actual character in the game.)

All in all, though, I liked it a lot. Sure, it probably isn't 100% legal to watch it on youTube, but you know what? If I'd never seen it on there, I'd never have gotten to like it as much. And I'm planning to rent it to see on a full screen at some point now, and possibly even buy it. Booyah.

Just felt like I should update. Man, the month's going by so fast, even for February.

I've kind of been in an art block lately. Yes, again. Stoopid block...what you do for me.
I've also been busy getting around a forum RP. Penny Arcade's rule of the internet applies to that too...wrestling a herd of wild baboons, man. Fortunately I've got a good group by and large. Silent Hill, dood!

Also been scheming with a friend on Project DOOM. No, not just regular doom...DOOM. If anything comes of it, you'll know, but until then, SUSPENSE!

I finished this book called World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War by Max Brooks. Most people seem to miss this, but I'm a huge fan of zombie movies (even though they scare the hell out of me) and whatnot, so I loved this book. Brooks knows his stuff, and it's very well thought through. I started it to just read a chapter or so with breakfast, and next thing I know it's after dark and I'm finishing the last page. Creepy as hell book, though.

I had a dream last night (well, this morning) that I was in Silent Hill 4...which, as those who are familiar with it know, is creepy as hell. I was stuck in my room, a la our man Henry from SH4, and I was fighting some of the ghosts with the pipe you have at the beginning of the game.

For those who don't know, the ghosts in SH4 you can't actually beat, you can just fight them until they're down for the count for a few moments so you can run the hell away. And I was stuck in my small, weirdly-shaped room with two of them.
Fortunately, I was totally kicking ass with the pipe, and I'd managed to beat one of them and the other one had disappeared by the time I woke up.

I've been having a lot of dreams that I actually remember lately, but that was a particularly...unique one. The dream I had before it involved running around with Dante from Devil May Cry 2 (or AS Dante...can't clearly remember) trying to prevent some sort of demi-doomsday-plot involving flooding. And trying to find something in this grocery store infested with zombies...

I'm all about the SH dream, mostly. My first thought on waking up was "Dude...what. The. Hell.". Second thought; "Whoa...I beat a ghost in half with a pipe! That was so awesome."

I may have to abandon the swordliness in favor of the pipe. At least you don't have to sharpen a pipe...though I guess you can't cut your veggies with a pipe. On the other hand, I find myself doubting that the culinary arts will be high on my list of priorities, should I wind up stuck in an eerie monster-infested alternate dimension.

(I'm terrified that a Fatal Frame dream will be up next....)

Soooo...just a warning that there might not be anything I'm supposed to be working on anytime soon. I seem to be suffering from a minor case of misplaced sketches.

I finally filled up my giant 12x12 100 page sketchbook, so I got a new one and put some of the ones that were on my "priorities" list somewhere safe so I wouldn't lose them.

Unfortunately, I put them somewhere so safe even I can't find them. Which is, uh, bad. In the extreme. In hindsight, this may be something of a sign...
I guess this means I'll be cleaning the bat cave my room at some point soon.

I'm also planning on trying to do another 24 hour comic at some point soon, but don't hold me to that. We shall see

On a random note, CLAMP's manga XXXHolic has such beautiful artwork....I weep.

I think the time must go to funkytown, since I'm clearly out of it. I didn't even realize it was February until this afternoon and I keep randomly waking up at weird times of the night. Well, early morning, technically. Weird.

Working on two more 100 Themes pictures, one of them's a really old idea I just never got around to drawing and this is a perfect opportunity for. Haven't really been drawing like I should due to a fit of random laziness and school stuff.

I've somehow gotten addicted to a manga called Yakitate! Japan. I blame my friend Tabby(who's also the source of my new header). It's about a boy trying to bake a signature bread for Japan, which doesn't sound interesting, but oddly enough it is. Just be warned it'll make you ridiculously hungry. Quite funny, too...when I was over at said friend's house earlier today we kept striking the dramatic pose and yelling "I HAVE HANDS OF THE SUN!"

I can't seem to stop listening to this song from the Silent Hill 3 soundtrack that I found to an AMV on YouTube....it's called "You're Not Here", and it doesn't sound anything like what you'd expect from a horror game soundtrack. Very classical, grooving rock tune and nice vocals. Go listen to it.

All in all, all goes well at the moment.

It's true. Every year a birthday comes around, and yet I feel no older! Honestly.

So, heh, happy birthday to me. I got an utterly, utterly fantabulous present yesterday morning - I went out to sign for a FedEx package (with my name misspelled on it), and when I open it in confusion, what do I find but a beautiful, shining new TABLET!
*weeps with joy*

Precioussss is so beautiful. I loveses it and I playses with its all ze time. There's a bit of a learning curve to getting used to it, but I'm already getting the hang of it. I thinking inking with it'll take a bit of practice, but holy crap this thing is awesome for shading!
I've mentioned this before, but I love my family

A book I'd been waiting forever for also came into the library yesterday, so I made myself wait until today to start it. By which I mean after midnight. I'd have to say what I was doing at midnight was oddly appropriate; I was explaining the theory behind Robocrabs to a friend on MSN, whilst RPing with another friend, listening to japanese metal, and I didn't notice it was midnight until five minutes past. Hehehe

A shout out to the ever-squishy whose birthday was yesterday. January for the win!

Yes, Typhoid mary has struck again. Typhoid Mary being one of the many nicknames for one of my elder sisters, ~bluefyrefly. SHE DONE GIVED ME SICKINESS.

Green tea is fabulous, though. As is tea in general. I woke up on thursday feeling like crap, drank some of this peppermint tea we have since we were out of coffee, and maaaaan...felt ever so much better. Tea for the win.

Still feel horrible, though. Bah.

Might not be much art for awhile, 'cause Typhoid Mary requested a couple of pieces and I agreed. Of course, that was before illness set in....*kicks Havvy in the e-shin*

I'm tentatively planning to enter the next Tokyopop Rising Stars of Manga contest. Woot? I guess. Still not sure what to do for it...such is the lot of the person who loves too many genres. I know for sure I won't be doing one with much action...attempting to thumbnail for this challenge I entered at the beginning of this year showed me that's one thing I'm really weak at. Which is kind of odd, considering how much action I read/watch. Eh.

I'm also not very good at being brief...grah. Well, I'll burn that bridge when I get there.

So, I'm going to be on absence again. Heading out to Iowa again this weekend, probably back Monday or Tuesday. Taking elder sister back to college and celebrating dad's birthday, even-elder sister and her husband are even coming out from Chicago. Good times.
Unfortunately, it's poorly timed, 'cause I've got stuff I should be working on. Bah, well, whatever.

And now for something completely different!

I've been re-watching Samurai Champloo on YouTube (the dub, mind you. It's much better than the japanese version.) and have been reminded of how utterly awesome this show is. Sure, it's rambling and not as unified as it could be, but would it really be as unique and entertaining if it were super railroad-plot-ed? Would that even fit the story, characters, and style at all? Big no.

Even better, I've been catching some episodes I'd missed on AdultSwim. Episode 9, for example. So ridiculously sad and sweet it's not even funny. Episode 15 in particular, "Bogus Booty"...talk about Champloo humor at it's best.

I spent the afternoon at Waldenbooks, and was violently reminded of how much this store sucks. I swear, what the hell! Why can't we just have a Borders or a B&N? Waldenbooks drops series like flies, and worst of all, there's no goddamn chairs. Yes, this bothers me - if it was a REAL bookstore, like every other bookstore, it'd have chairs and a sitting area.

As it is, I was getting dirty looks from the clerks as I stood reading Devil May Cry. Well, excuuuuuse me for not having money to spend on everything I'd like to read. Jeesh.

And this bookstore in particular sucks...they dropped Priest, Bizenghast, and Dramacon from their manga section

At least I got to read my Sandman in peace, though. I recommend it even if you are a manga hardcore fan...american comic, yes, but it's still amazing.

So, guess who just spent most of the week stuck without power due to a nasty ice-storm? Here's a hint: it isn't not me.

Our electricity went out early on saturday, so we had to go over to my aunt and uncle's house, seeing as how they have a wood-burning stove. (so handy when there's no power) Aunt and uncle, while very nice people, are also uber-christian. Meep.

I spent most of the week playing cards with my elder sister by the stove, or drawing little one-page gag comics. I finished two and part of a third, so I'll probably post those.

I'm so glad I listened to my friend and backed up my writing a few months ago. And 99% of the pictures I had saved were just random anime screenshots or random junk. Everything except the anime can be re-downloaded, and I can probably just find that on youTube these days. I needed to cull my stuff anyway....

Now the bad part!

Considering that I had SO much stuff, the 1% that was actually useful stuff is going to be a right pain to find again. Manga tones, for example, or photos of family stuff of the digital camera.
Some of my favorite AMVs aren't on AnimeMusicVideos.org anymore, since I downloaded them before they took all the AMVs with Evanescence songs off their site. (yes, I listen to Evanescence)

I don't have any original copies of ANY of my all-digital work. NONE. All the bookmarks of useful things I'd gathered in my browser are gone.

Well.....there was. I had a nice little watercolor pencilled out, and I had partly painted it, until the painting began running to shit. I DOES NOT DO DE MULTI-COLORED PAINTINGS IN THE LINES WELL

It all came to a grand finale when I accidentally spilled purple ink on the picture and accidentally dyed my hands purple. Fortunately it came off.

And on sunday, I came up with a kind of cruddy lineart that I was going to do something with...until yesterday I discovered a website with a bunch of old sprite games to play for free. Cannot...stop...playing...Castlevania! NUH NUH NUH IT'S WHIP MAAAAAN!
This game not only is crack, but I'm kind of decent at it. That's a bad combination for getting anything productive done, kids! 8D

I still am at a loss as to in what twisted japanese imagination little hearts fall from destroying candelabras. And what do the little hearts do?!
Pansy-ass fire punch spell is TEH USELESS. I finally get to use it, and I'm all "SIX?? SIX DAMAGE??" Viva le firewhip!
I love how I can effortlessly take out a giant fire-breathing ram skull, yet I see a swarm of bats and I'm all "OH SNAP!" and running away for half a level so I can find an open place to attack them. And the sword is utterly USELESS against the stupid bats, too. The firewhip, however...muhaha! You can even kill MULTIPLE bats at one time.

I'm also leaving for Hannukkah vacation on thursday. Woohoo!

Sounds like it's going to be one heck of a day, so I'm looking forward to it, but still...man, it snuck up on me!

I'm getting back into the process of drawing more. I'm planning to do at least one art anything a week, even if it's just a crappy pencil picture.

How goes NaNoWriMo, you ask? (or not, but I'll answer anyway)

Uuuuuuh. Not well. I know how the story goes, but I just really don't want to write.
I was talking to a friend earlier, and I realized that very few characters get a happy ending...the main character, who I somehow have come to detest gets an unhappy ending (though how unhappy I've not quite decided, I've got two possibilities), my almost-favorite characters...well, one of them dies, one of them gets exiled, and one of them gets a sort-of happy ending.

My favorite character even has an unhappy ending...the only one with an ending resembling happy is actually the villain. Who I somehow came to like better then my main character.

...

Yeeeah.


I finally got my hands on A Feast For Crows by G.R.R Martin! YEEE! Go read A Song of Ice and Fire series NOW, if you are even a mild fantasy fan.

...and when you're done with those, go read Shaman's Crossing by Robin Hobb. Poor Nevare, such a good, loveable main character, and yet such a dumbass :']

Why the -hell- do so many people insist that Traditional Art is sooooo superior to Digital art and clearly so much more difficult?

(If you've heard me go on about this before you're probably already running for the exits. Everyone else....ye be warned.)

What. The. Fuck.

I'm so damn tired of this! It's a never-ending crusade of people insisting that all digital art is "overprocessed" and "too shiny". Don't forget my favorite, "the computer does all the work for you".

Yeah. Suuuuure. Just like the paints, or the color pencils, or the charcoals do all the work for you.

Get off your high-horse, please. Using a computer for doing art is every bit as difficult as traditional art-I've even heard many traditional artists who dabble in it say that it's harder. It's all a matter of what you're used to.

....and I'm sorry, you can't tell me that using a mouse is easier then using a pencil or a paintbrush. Tablets do even things out, to be sure, but they still both require a lot of practice and work. The computer doing all the work for you? Don't make me laugh.

When I attended Art Institute of Chicago for summer classes (which were awesome), I got crap from a classmate in Portrait Drawing because I mentioned that usually did digital art.
The classmate in question, Liz, was a talented artist, but I've never seen anyone turn up their nose so quickly at the mention of the word Photoshop. What the hell, yo? (we also had a nasty argument when she swore every dub out there sucked, but that's, uh, another story.)

But, ya know what, kiddies? On the day we used color pastels, I was one of only ones who enjoyed it and knew what I was doing, because I was one of the few who didn't always use charcoal and pencil.

I'm not saying digital art is perfect. I have every bit as much dislike for those occasional digital artists who swear that traditional is lame, old fashioned and boring. Screw you. I like my pen and ink, thanks very much.

I'll just finish this off since I seem to have lost my train of thought. What really sparked this was me browsing the Daily Deviations. Apparently we have two gallery directors for the anime section, so I quickly looked through their DD Guidelines in case I found something I wanted to suggest.

One of the gallery directors' guidelines jumped out at me, though.
"Traditional art is preferred."
...what? I thought that staffers were supposed to be at least SOMEWHAT impartial. I'm aware they're "staff picks", but avoiding about half of your gallery of choice because "traditional impresses me a lot more".....

What the hell, yo? That's so very nice and fair. Bravo.
I can understand why most staffers won't feature, say, fanart, unless it's really good. I wouldn't want to touch the seething thing that is DA's fanart culture with a ten foot pole if I could help it either....but excluding digital art like that? Because it doesn't impress you as much?

Once again, we're hitting the whole thought that digital art is somehow a whole lot easier. Which, as I just explained, is a load of crap.

Anyway, the fuzzy little bastard (who I call Ban....don't ask) has crossed a new line. I was making myself a PB&J sammich a little while ago, and went to put the peanut butter away in the cupboard. When I look up, that little jerk's eating my food!

It ran off under the microwave, but he at a whole corner of it. I had to tear off a good chunk of it....go make yer own food!

Unfortunately, it's horribly cute. If I didn't happen to own a cat, I'd almost be tempted to try and catch it....(I know, I know....mice are not pets....but....I can't help it! The damnable furry little creatures are my achilles heel!)

11:45ish-Completely breaks down the fourth wall in the comic. Blows up the earth. Ponders what the hell to do now.

12:45ish-Single-handedly fights off a llama invasion. Takes a shower. Starts on the second comic.

1:45ish-Does stuff.

2:45ish-Takes a walk. Mauled by a wild buffallama.

3:45ish-Finally crumbles and takes a nap.

9:00ish-Wakes up and curses her fucking alarm clock to the darkest pits of the abyss.

10:30ish-Drinks more coffee.

11:30ish-Talks to hat. Uses hat to fend off a llamaninja.

12:30ish-Freaking out. Drawing so fast there's fricking SMOKE rising from the paper.

Raaaaarrrrghhhhh. I'm freaking TIRED, kiddies. Staying up for about 20 hours will do that...

The comic is sort of divided into two totally different things. The first seven pages are random humor (or at least humorous to me), ending in the world being blown up, after the characters insult my hat.

The second part resulted after my mini-meltdown around midnight, when I decided to draw something semi-serious. It's still incredibly random, but I might finish it anyway.

On a kinda better note, I officially decided to do a webcomic. This definitely proved I can at LEAST crank out one page a week

So, I'm getting ready to rumble. I's gots mah pens and ink, I's gots mah tea, I's gots mah reference-stuff, I's gots mah sammich-making-stuff, and I's ready to rock. (more or less)

I changed my idea of what I'm going to do three times, but I think I'm settled now. I leave you with one word (and most of my watchers probably know how significant it is); airship. Oh yeeeeah.

I managed to hurt my drawing hand badly in TWO places this week, but fortunately it doesn't seem to have affected hand control, though I've got this crazy shade of green bruise around the knuckles of my pinky and fourth finger. Talk about an indescribable color....stupid volleyball and it's stupid injuries.

About three hours 'til midnight now. Waka waka!

So, right, I'm trying to juggle volleyball three days a week (which I detest. Sports are not my thing), school, the various and numerous chores I've gotten to take on since sister went to college, and still having time to read and draw a bit. Ayeee....the end of VB season cannot come fast enough.

Some Random Crap entries are on their way, however (I think)...or so rumor has it.
September's going by so fast it's scary....at least fall finally got off it's lazy arse and showed up.
Still working on outlines for NationalNovelWriter's month...November's rapidly approaching. Yipes!

Also; the end of Final Fantasy VII: Dirge Of Cerberus was....disappointing. By a lot. But, the secret ending....eyah! What? When? How?
I'll not spoil, but all I have to say is that it appears Sephiroth ain't the only one-winged angel around.

I recently did a rather odd experiment, with trying a pure black-and-white comic style, inspired by the Devil May Cry manga. No screentones at all, and not huge amounts of hatching. It really fits the story and feel, and I was impressed, so I tried it out.
...and was promptly bitched out for it not being "manga-enough" since I (get this) didn't use screentones.

....what. Come -on-, people! Since when did the use of tones make it "manga"? That's just....
RAWR.
I'm tempted to stick with it. Just because. Stubborness and all that....in hindsight, though, I like toning too much to abandon it completely. But, I, uh, thought about it! Really hard!

So, yeah, two new animes on Adult Swim last night, Trinity Blood and Bleach. (both of which I've seen subbed versions of the first few episodes, and read the manga of)
Since I had to stay up for the later showing at 2 and 2:30 respectively, I didn't make it to Bleach, but I did see TB. I like it, though it takes a few episodes for the plot to start. I'm a dub fan, so I was happy with it, though I'm not very fond of Abel Nightroad's voice...alas.

I discovered suddenly over the weekend that I can actually draw better suddenly....it startled me, man. WTHZOMGBBQLULZORZ!!111oneone
And yet....for some reason, I can't draw comics. Talk about a big honking what the hell. RAWR.

Started school last week. As I predicted, being a sophomore is like being a freshman except worse. I'm psychic, man!

Otherwise...V for Vendetta is a great movie. As is Akira, though it really unnerved me that the dub voices for Kaneda and Tetsuo were the same actors as were in one of my favorite animes, as enemies. (Vash & Knives from Trigun)

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind...was...special. I think I liked it.

Donnie Darko was great, but the ending kind of sucked.

There's probably not going to be much activity from me on the art front for a while. Volleyball season started, and I already can't wait for it to end, and that's going to hog up my time.

-Doesn't go so well with the way I draw (super-stylized lineart and super-realistic shading don't meld well)

Maybe I should just stick with my soft cel-shading....grrrrr! As soon as I get to a level I want to be on, it seems like I get un-contented with it immediately and -have- to change.
Same thing happened once I conquered cel-shading, I got unhappy with it and moved to soft cg....now I'm at soft CG and just -have- to change again. *grumble*

Back from vacation (obviously)!
Was quite excellent, largely uneventful, but fun nevertheless. Played a crapload of Star Wars: Battlefront with one of my elder brothers (thus the title), got absolutely NO work done on my art assignment. (heh)

Had to throw it together this morning since we got in late last night, at lessons were at 1, and I accidentally slept in. Wasn't done, but ohwell.

Also....I learned today that painting outlines -sucks-. Big time. Give me a pencil or pencil-like-object, pen, charcoal, chalk, whatever....but a brush? Get thee gone!
The result was hideous to say the least.

Expect to be seeing more traditional pieces from me. (gaspshockhorror) (and no, I'm not going to stop doing anime style....or digital, for that matter)( I don't think there's anyone who could make me)(I wonder how many sentences in parentheses I can do?)(Quite a few, apparently)(LOLOLOL)
