9 is the new animated movie by Tim Burton. And it's good. Really good. Just got back from seeing it; I'll confess, the only reason at all me and my friends wanted to see it was because of Coheed and Cambria's Welcome Home being used for the trailer. That being said, it was a great movie, so go and see it. It's not a kid's movie if your thinking it, although I'm sure kid's would find it entertaining since the (very good) action almost never stops throughout the whole movie.
Maybe I'll write more about this later.

Well, I mentioned in my previous journal how I was back from Colorado (which I never actually mentioned I was going to in the first place) and how I would write all about it when I was less tired. That was five days ago. What to say... It was fun? The problem with me is, I really like the idea of blogging and writing out long rants on subjects that interest me, and when I'm driving or at work or doing something banal I often write out long such rants in my head. I have enough of them to fill a blog (if i had one) with dozens and dozens of posts, but when time comes to actually sit down and write one... meh. I don't want to. So I'm not really going to say much about Colorado. Maybe I'll say some more when I get the pictures back from my dad, I can post some of those and let you see for yourselves. So, here's the cliff notes version:
* Mountains. Being from Texas, I'd never really seen mountains before. They were amazing, and I found them to be quite awesome. Also, nice and cool compared to Texas summer 100 degree weather. I actually brought a hoodie and even had some chances to wear it.
*Pike's Peak. [link]fficial&hl=en&source=hp&qike%27s%20Peak&gbv=2&ie=UTF-8&sa=N&tab=il&start=0 This place. Took about an hour to reach the summit by train (my dad wasn't crazy enough to drive up there- at least not with my mom in the car). View from the top was flat out amazing, and well worth the trip to Colorado by itself. You can actually see Kansas from the peak.
*Royal Gorge Bridge. [link]fficial&hl=en&source=hp&qike%27s%20Peak&gbv=2&ie=UTF-8&sa=N&tab=il&start=0 Another really cool place. I was too wimpy to ride the gondola over the five thousand foot drop but I did walk across the bridge. Which was made of wood. And had about two hundred motorcycles driving across it.
*Eight Mile Road- Haha, eight mile, right. What we thought was a scenic shortcut through the mountains turned out to be anything but. On the last day in Colorado, we decided to drive out to Canon City to see the Royal Gorge mentioned above. All in all, getting there and back should have taken two and a half or three hours at the most. As it happened, we spent nearly two hours just getting through those eight miles in the mountains. During which we saw about ten other cars. Often driving straight at us from around a hairpin turn on our one lane road. With a hundred foot drop a few feet to our right. Still, it was pretty fun once my mom stopped freaking out, probably one of the best parts of the trip.

Well, that was fun, maybe I'll get around to writing a little cliff notes version of the other twenty or so topics I've been meaning to write about in the past month or so...

I've begun an embarkment (is that even a word?) on a worrisome and difficult mission- I've recovered my old story Seraphim (started about 2 and half years ago) from where it was floating around in cyber space and begun to read through it, comparing it to my current book to see how I've (hopefully) improved.
To give a little info on this story, it is a tale of a young boy who is the son of the leader of one of the most powerful organizations on the planet, an international quasi-military organization charged with defending humanity from a group of mysterious beings of great power. He is brought to the organization without explanation and ends up piloting a massive machine in order too- OK, let me stop there.

Yeah, it is an Evangelion clone. Oh, there are differences, of course, and plenty of other influences other than Eva, particularly since I didn't really understand Eva back then. But still, all in all, you can pretty much graph the character development from Eva characters to their rough equivalent in my own story. After I got over my anger at having lost some fifty-odd pages of writing from Seraphim, I eventually began writing my current project, City of Kindling, when my brother repeatedly bugged me that the story I had created for our group's RPG sessions would make a great story. Just to get him to leave me alone, I tried writing it. At first I thought there was no way I could make it work, that anything created in such a genre as an rpg couldn't possibly be turned into a publishable story (tell that to Dragonlance I suppose), but as I continued I began to realize just how much I loved the world I had created and that it did, indeed, make a good story.
More importantly, I came to another realization- City of Kindling, when it comes down to it, was the single first story I'd ever come up with that was truly unique, of my own creation. It had influences of course, but still, you couldn't strip away all of the details added on and spot what lay underneath- because what lay underneath was me.

As I continued to write Kindling, getting more into it as I went, I began to look back at Seraphim with unease, then embarrassment, then disgust. It is a well known fact that you are your own worst critic, and suddenly all I could see were Seraphim's flaws, eighty feet tall in glowing neon letters. Now its been years since I've read it, and I'm going in, seeing just how bad the prognosis really is... considering I used to plan to get this thing published...

Surprisingly, its not really all that bad. Sure the writing is quite amateurish compared to my current standards, the characterization can be inconsistent, and there is a sentence every couple of paragraphs that makes me groan or roll my eyes or sigh, but all in all, it's much better than I thought it would be. Of course, at this point I've only read the first chapter, but I would have that that one would be the worst.

So I think this is actually giving me a boost of confidence. I've always feared that I am much too close to my own writing to judge it objectively, but this is a story I've abandoned years ago and have given up for lost- and I find it actually acceptable. Not great, below average maybe, but here's the thing- I've read worse books. Books written by people who make a living writing them. And that, oddly enough, gives me hope.

I just wish I'd picked a first novel that wasn't so freaking long.

Seems like no one really has time for Deviant Art anymore, unfortunately myself included. In all honesty though, I have been drawing a lot lately, just haven't really made anything I could consider finished. I do have 4 or 5 drawings I'd like to post anyway, but I can't. Since my computer died and was subsequently revived, I no longer have a working printer/scanner, as mine lacks the software to make it go. Ironically, my parent's scanner has died as well, so I have no way to scan anything at the moment. Hopefully I can change that if I can find some software for the printer online somewhere. Unfortunately, my copy of Photoshop Elements has apparently decided it is a trial version, though I've had it for years, and won't let me use it without a serial number that I don't seem to have, so the nearly finished piece I've been working on seems doomed for the moment. So, with all these problems and the additional mundane troubles of work and trying to get back into school this semester (if I find the money somehow), I probably won't be around too often. Still, I'll be checking up on those of you I actually care about on here, so keep on posting.

As a consolation (for me, since probably no one else cares ) I'm getting ready to upload the beginnings of the Anime Royale Fanfic I was taking about 4 journals back. Still hoping for any suggestions of students to add to the thing. See ya around guys...

So I was lying awake last night around 4:30 A.M. (this happens often ) and I get a crazy idea. Lately I've been kinda checking out fanfics even though the vast majority of them are rather poorly written and I don't really approve of writing them (for myself only, since it distracts from the books I'm working on, I don't have a problem with others writing them). But the idea for a particularly epic fanfic came to me all of the sudden and out of nowhere.
Basically, Battle Royale, using various characters from games and anime.
Now, for those of you who arent Battle Royale is a Japanese book by Koushun Takami about a middle school class that's taken by the fascist government to a deserted island and forced to kill each other until only one is left. Sounds like bad fodder for those obsessed with gore and violence, but its actually an extremely moving and skillful tale that manages to be both extremely dark and cynical while also idealistic and hopeful. Anyway, that's the basic plot, so the I started thinking of exactly what characters I would use for this story if I were to try and write it. Obviously, I would have to tweak their ages and back stories a bit to make it all fit together. Here's my thoughts so far, compiled at 5 o clock in the morning.
1. Shuya, from Battle Royale. Very meta I know, but my idea here was to have Shuya play the role of Shogo Kawada from the original book- the previous winner who knows how to play the game and wants to try to break it this time and save some of the other students.
2. Shinji, from Evangelion. The idea that started the whole thing. Can't you just imagine Shinji forced into a knife fight with some kid, muttering "I mustn't run away, I mustn't run away, I mustn't run away, I mustn't run away!"
3. Mamimi (FLCL) Delinquent girl.
4. Aang (Avatar) stand in for Hiroki Sugimura. Trained martial artist, uses a staff, refuses to kill, etc.
5. Azula (Avatar) stand in for Mitsuko Souma. If Azula was dropped into The Game she would be very up for it.
6. Yugi (Yu-gi-oh). The wimpy game obsessed otaku...once he gets pushed too far though, a different personality takes over...
7. Kagami (Lucky Star)and-
8. Tsubasa (Lucky Star). Basically just background girls who would probably die tragically, which is sad cause I rather like Kagami.
9. Kyon (Haruhi). Totally normal kid with no particular noticeable traits...but somehow always avoids being killed.
10. L (Deathnote). Stand in for Shinji Mimura. Extremely smart and capable good guy who's slightly flawed in the morality department.
11. Lain (Serial Experiments Lain). Introverted loner girl.
12. Asuka (Evangelion). Kinda sorta a stand in for Takako Chigusa, the kinda bitchy girl who ended up killing the guy that tried to rape her. Although it's pretty hard to imagine her being a friend of Aang's
13. Koji (Digimon Frontier).
14. Simon (Gurren Lagann). Wimpy useless kid. Once his friend dies to protect him though, he takes a level in badass.
15. Kino (Kino’s Journey). Cute but strange young girl with gender confusion issues. Happens to be extremely proficient with firearms.
16. Koyuki (Beck). Sorta wimpy kid who loves to play guitar. Often mistaken for Shinji.
17. Jacuzi Splot (Baccano). Just...go watch Baccano! You'll see...
18. Sasshi (Abenobashi) and-
19. Arumi (Abenobashi). More background quick kills.
20. Maka Albarn (Soul Eater) Nerdy, cute girl, who is oddly extremely capable of defending herself.
21. Yuki Nagato (Haruhi Suzumiya) Weird bookworm, who, as soon as The Game starts, goes off somewhere and reads until she is killed.
22. Katana (Gad-Guard). Possibly the stand in for Kazuo, I havent really found anyone evil enough yet. If not him, maybe-
Light Yagami (Deathnote) Notably, when I was reading Battle Royale I always imagined Kazuo Kiriyama looked exactly like Light. And hes pretty evil. I just dont think Light would actually make it very far without his Deathnote.

So I was full of enthusiasm for this idea for a few minutes, then I realized the fatal flaw in the story. These are all characters that I like from various shows that I like- writing this story, I would have to be willing to brutally...

Well, I'm back.
Last week, my computer died. I don't really know how or why, but it got to the point where it wouldn't even start up anymore. My friend showed me how to put it in system recovery mode, which means it fixed itself but I lost everything on the computer. Fortunately, I keep everything backed up online, so I didn't lose anything too important, other than three pages of my short story I started here: [link] and the coloring I was doing on this drawing: [link]
I DID lose all of the 14 pages of prep work I was doing for the final session of my RPG, which led too it being delayed, and that sucks. On a positive note, I recently received a second computer, which is set up in my room atm. It has no internet access, but honestly I think that's probably a good thing, as it means much much less distractions when I'm trying to right/work on rpg and such. I also have two new drawings to upload, but currently cant because my printer is no longer installed. Gonna try to fix that now.

BTW, I just got Resident Evil 5, and am very, very surprised to see that the AI controlled partner in the game isnt a brainless moron, she's actually quite useful. Almost embarrassingly so. Without her, I'd probably die every five minutes or so. Also nice to note is that, gameplay wise, the game is putting more of a focus on making the game actually frightening. Ammo is very scarce, so that your always going empty while still in the middle of a horde of zombies, and you can no longer go into a menu to use items- you have to do it in realtime, which is frantic. Sadly, the story apparently didnt get the memo. Instead of trying to be creepy or horror related, or even following the ridiculously laughable story of RE4, RE5 tries to be as much like an action movie as possible. It feels kinda like playing Call of Duty 4 with zombies (including using the same voice actors from that game for the HQ operator and your initial squad leader).
Still, it's pretty fun, so I cant complain too much. I just wish Resident Evil would someday decide what it actually wants to be.

I've been spending the last four hours working on the RPG session I'll be doing on Sunday, and one of my newer tactics this campaign has been to use photos (mostly from Urban Exploration sites, which are very fun) to set mood and describe settings. A picture is worth a thousand words and all that. Anyway, several times tonight I've found a good picture, but it just wasn't quite right for my purposes, so I've been experimenting with real quick, one or two layer edits to make them suitable. Because I really like this story and I intend to continue sending it in to contests, I plan on doing some major rewriting on it, when I get the time (my schedule right now- 34 hours a week of work, school, sleep, studying, RPG preparation (like a second job of its own), writing, and Valkyria Chronicles. Who knows when I'll get around to drawing again). There really was no need for those parentheses were there?

Movie Idea I came up with in Spanish Class:
The year is 2035. Technology hasn't advanced all that much, but history is repeating itself as America and her allies face off with The Russian-Chinese Union in a Nuclear standoff, with the possibility of worldwide destruction a daily threat.
Out of nowhere, a giant humanoid robot (a la Gundam) appears and attacks a Russian missile base, killing thousands and destroying the base. Equipped with extremely advanced technology, the Robot can magnetically deflect any missile attack, move freely between land, sea, and air, and can reach speeds inaccessible by any modern aircraft. The Russian Air Force pursues the Robot, but it retreats to the east, into American air space. The Union quickly blames the U.S. for the attack, but the American President assures them they are not responsible and will shoot down the unknown bogey immediately.
Off the coast of Alaska, the Robot encounters an American fleet and swarm of aircraft. They are dealt heavy damage, and the Robot flees up through the atmosphere directly into space, crashing into a spy satellite and sending it crashing down into the ocean. From around the dark side of the moon, an unknown spacecraft approaches and begins repairing and rearming the Robot.
On the surface, the U.S. and Union call for a halt of hostilities and focus on the unknown enemy. Russian scientists work on researching the damaged pieces of the Robot recovered, while America works on the building of massive rail guns for attacking the Robot as it reenters the atmosphere. After thirty two hours, the Robot dives back down into the atmosphere, dodging the rail guns as it enters. It returns down to the sea and captures an aircraft carrier. It takes the crew hostage, and, using text-only transmissions, orders the crew to transport it to Japan. The Americans, hoping for time to develop a method of countering the Robot, agree, and battle ceases as the carrier sails for Japan.
Arriving at Japan, the Robot enters Tokyo and transmits to the country. Revealing himself for the first time is pilot Nataku Yamato, of 1/2 Japanese, 1/4 Korean, and 1/4 Nigerian descent. He requests Japanese citizenship and sanctuary from the Superpowers in exchange for military and technological assistance, on condition that if he is killed or his machine taken their country will be destroyed by his "allies". He gives the Japanese two hours to respond. While the Japanese debate, the American President and leaders of the Russian-Chinese Union meet in secret on board a battleship in the pacific.
Japan agrees to Nataku's terms and he exits his craft and meets with the leaders of Japan, giving them computer data to make extremely advanced technology including Alternate Energy Reactors. Shortly thereafter, America and the Union declare war on Japan.
Cut to 6 months later.
The Superpowers are at war with Japan, which is backed by a vast number of minor countries throughout the world, having given support in exchange for the Alternate Energy Reactors. Battle rages back and forth, encompassing the entirety of the world. The world is shocked as another Humanoid Robot appears and attacks the Japanese force and Nataku's machine. He is saved only by the use of the Temporal Disrupters within his machine, capable of bending time and space around itself. The new machine appears in Nigeria and aligns itself with Africa and the Superpowers.
Cut to 6 months later.
The war has reached the heartland of Africa, and as battles rage all around the two pilots duel with their machines on the plains of the African Savanah. As they battle with their Temporal Disruptors, a portal storm appears in the sky overhead and devastates the area. Both machines are damaged to the point of being inoperative. Nataku drags himself out of the machine and across the field to his enemy. He tries his own access code on the cockpit and is surprised to find that it works. Inside, he comes face to face with a pilot that looks exactly like himself. They both draw guns and fire, killing each other.

Cut to 20 years later.

The war is over, both sides having halted once the instigators of the war were dead. The Temporal Storm over Africa eventually transformed the bulk of the continent into an agricultural Eden capable of feeding 3/4 of the worlds population. Throughout the world, Alternate Energy Reactors are now common place. In the middle east, a 14 year cease fire continues as the Oil rich countries try to deal with the loss of their wealth. Despite these losses, the standard of living for the average people in these countries is increased as Alternate Energy is now available. The Union and American allies have ended hostilities, and a new era of scientific discovery has begun as the remains of the future machines are studied. In Africa, the bodies of the two Nataku's are displayed publicly at the Tomb of Two....

Yesterday though, I heard it go on, and she was sitting right next to me (drinking my milk). This afternoon, I was filling an ice tray when suddenly, from behind, I heard the insidious beeping of the microwave threatening me. I turned and saw it blinking furiously at me, capable of communicating it's rage only with an enigmatic 2 minutes and 13 seconds display. As long as it's microwaves, I'm somewhat lacking in fear. Now, when Wikipedia becomes self aware, that's when its time to GTFO.

So I've been in kind of an art slump recently, but I really have been wanting to draw. So, I kinda came up with a way to try to force myself to draw some stuff. I came up with my top ten favorite games, though of course I somehow forgot about Shadow of the Colossus. Anyway, my current plan is to take each game on the list, from ten to one, and draw some fanart for it. I think this might be a good idea to break through my artists block. If anyone else wants to do it too that would be cool . Here they are:

1. Magi Nation Duel. Note that this is NOT a video game, but a collectable card game which I use to play for about two to three years.

2. Disgaea

3. Xenogears

4. Guilty Gear XX

5. Final Fantasy Tactics

6. Castlevania: Symphony of the Night (the only good Castlevania game in a long line of crap)

7. Chrono Trigger

8. Final Fantasy 7 EDIT: Well, I finished this a LONG time ago, never updated. I still plan on doing this thing whenever I run out of stuff to draw [link]

9. Bloody Roar 2 EDIT: Finished finally. On to FF7, one of the ones I'm excited about. Here's the pic: [link]

10. Xenosaga series. (none of the games by themselves would have made it in I'm afraid) EDIT: This ones done, look in my scraps if you care...

Honorary mentions include Shadow of the Colossus, which honestly should have one of the top spots but I dont want to do fanart for it , Halo, Portal, which is just too short, and the Suikoden series.

Now to get started on that (yeah right, your gonna go watch Cholera on youtube arent you?) Shut up...

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Yesterday I visited a Nano technology laboratory at UTA while I was there applying. Just to say I'd been in one. There was no one there at all, but there were a lot of high tech equipment about, and one of the notices said something about having your NERV id card handy, but I must say I was disappointed by the lack of insanely powerful yet cute transforming little girls like these: [link]
[link]

Btw, I just finished the book Fight Club. I'm a big fan of the movie, and in my opinion it's actually better than the book it's based off of. Probably due to the fact that the book was a bit too nihilistic for me. But if your into anti-establishment and cynicism, by all means check it out, it's good. I'd recommend it to

Well you may have noticed I haven't exactly been flooding my gallery lately. For about two weeks I just haven't been able to draw much of anything (you know how it is, we've all been there). I think I'm starting to finally get some inspiration back though. Lately I've been checking out the awesome Law of Talo's tourney that's just starting up: [link]
Very excited about this tournament, as it contains Endling, Unknown Person, Lan-kun, and a ton of other awesome artists. Anticipation for LoT has put me in a nostalgic mood for Endzone as well, and I've been reading bits and pieces of it. I've noticed a number of other tournaments around the DA as well, such as Coliseum and DAWGS which isnt exactly a tournament but whatever. Same with Samurai Duelers Leage. Anyway, what does this have to do with anything?
My character Clow, seen here: [link] was originally created for an rpg I am now playing with my brother and a few friends, but I also planned to prepare him as a contender for DA OC tournaments if one came my way that I'd be interested in. Of course, right now, I'd stand no chance at making it into one of these tourney's but as long as I keep working at it I'll be hoping to get him ready someday. Anyway, I've been drawing Clow a lot in the past few days and I plan to keep on, look for a finished pic up soon. Until then, heres some doodles I did in school for the lols. laters. [link]

EDIT: Oh, btw my birthday is in two days. I'll be 22.

I went and repurchased the game, since I had lost my Cd key and the discs were pretty torn up, and have just starting wading into battlenet again, getting owned by people who have been playing for years. Although my current record is pretty good for me, 3 wins, 2 losses.

Anyways.... anyone out there have Starcraft and want to play? My name is Bluespade on battlenet too.
For those of you who helped me out with my book need, I'm happy to mention that I actually found an awesome book last night completely by luck. Of course, I liked it so much that I just about finished it (i have like 30-50 pages left) in a day, so I'm still in need of a new book... but now I have an author to check out...

The book is Skin, by Ted Dekker. [link]

At a glance, the book honestly didn't look like much and the tiny synopsis on the back did more harm than good. I'll reproduce it here: "A freak storm has spawned three tornados that are bearing down on the town of Summerville. Yet under the cover of the storm looms a much more ominous threat: a vindicative killer known as Red who's left a string of victims in his wake and is now bent on exacting his final revenge on the unsuspecting town.

But there is an enigma surrounding Red that the FBI is unwilling to admit- closely guarded secrets of something gone terribly wrong beneath the skin of Summerville. Secrets that will destroy far more than one small town.

Wendy Davidson is caught in the middle. She's a recovering cult survivor who takes refuge in Summerville on her way to visit her estranged mother. And with her, four strangers, any one of whom could be the next victim...
...or the killer." (End of Synopsis)

I really hate that last line, cause it makes it sound like every mystery novel every written (i'm not actually much of a mystery fan). The only things that convinced me to buy this book (aside from my brother wanting to hurry up and leave) was the mention of the three tornados, which had the air of supernatural about it, and a line from one of the recommendations on the back of the back, byt TitleTrakk(whoever that is) whcih reads: "Skin is compelling, thought-provoking fiction that is wildly out-of-the-box, speculative, boundary-breaking...regales readers with a tale of horror, suspense, and mind-bending reality."

That MIND BENDING REALITY thing hooked me. I expected Eva-esque crazy psychological crap and I got it. This book has greatly delivered ( although I did figure out who the killer was )

The plot is less generic than it sounds, and Wendy is NOT the main character despite what the back may say. The book delves into many interesting matters including the way the brain deciphers input, the possibilities of virtual reality, mind-altering drugs, regressed memories, and the psychology of a gamer. It also kept me guessing as to what was going on throughout most of the book, which is always good.

Also, I was pleased to find a book that is clearly of todays generation. References are made to Emo, World of Warcraft, Call of Duty, and so on.

Also, like all good mystery crime stories, this book contains an eccentric detective (though he doesnt match up to L, but then, who does?) and an interesting and quirky killer, who GREATLY reminds me of Beyond Birthday from the Deathnote Novel about Misora Naomi (Mali knows what I'm talking about). Check it out if you need a good read.

Also, I figured I'd give my review of The Dark Knight since I saw it the other night. I'll keep it short since everyone else is talking about it. It was flat out awesome. The Joker...The Joker rulz. Go see it. And root for the Joker.

Any readers out there? I just finished Stephen King's The Stand and Stephanie Meyer's The Host, and now I really need something to read. On that subject, has anyone ever read any anime-style books before? They're certainly rare. Notable ones include animorphs and an old unappreciated book called Talion Revenant.

On an unrelated note, I've started playing Starcraft again, anyone want to play? Unfortunately my computer is screwed up and it wont let me play Brood Wars online for some reason... so I can only do original. I don't know how I'd survive without Medics... but at least it has tanks.

Thoughts on GMing.

This article is full of nerd-speek and inside jokes, and deals with the strange topic of Role Playing Games. Read at your own discretion.

Since my brother is attempting to enter the world of Gming (that’s Game Mastering to all you noobs out there) and is having trouble coming up with a first turn, I figured I’d give him a little template to how I start out a new campaign, as well as give my little thoughts on the various mind numbingly irritating aspects of Gming.

How to make a first session-

Start out with a prepared written exposition. This is important because it prevents you from starting out your first few minutes of play going: “well, um, your in a, uh, city. Edge city. It’s, er, over a canyon, and there’s these mafia and yakuza- oh, there’s a bridge over the canyon, with a city on it, and um, they fight with each other but are on even footing, oh your in a truck outside the city-”
Unfortunately this is also a bit of a double edged sword because a well written opening exposition tends to make you appear more intelligent and in control than you actually are. Not to mention, it makes you look like an overly serious occult-candles-in-the-dark-basement-dressed-up-in-cloak gamer, when all you really want to do is not sound like a introverted tongue tied foreign kid in a speech class. So don’t make it too awesome, or your crew will expect much of you.

After the quick getting-out-of-the-way-stuff-about-the-setting-and-feel-of-the-world I tend to move on to the Intro section. In my Intro Section I give each of the players a quick little period of playtime, most of which is taken up in long rambling dialogue and description allowing little actual play time since I am so much of a story fag I often forget I have actual players sitting in front of me. This is the point where I usually grudgingly give some little area for exploration so the players can say “I want to go around the corner” before I spring some more exposition on them.

After everyone has had there little intro and is ready to start falling asleep, and the coffee table has yet to be hit by a single rolling dice, it’s time to give the players a time to shine, at least for a few minutes. At this point I usually throw in some pitiful little unthoughtful enemies in to be promptly slaughtered by the players so they can show up all the cool little abilities they thought up for they’re characters. These foes are usually marginally related to the story line, as in they are random street thugs hired by the actual bad guys to go capture the NPC of choice that’s now hooked up for some reason with one of my players, usually whichever player I think I can control the easiest. This is the point at which one of my players will inevitably discover that some tactic they designed for their character doesn’t work quite as well as they had hoped, usually the ever present power-gamer, and will immediately sink into a lethargic emo depression the rest of the night, while I irritatingly try to make them seem more awesome to cheer them up. This is also the point at which one of the characters I painstakingly designed to be cool and interesting to the Players is dismissed as lame and unimportant, at which point rage builds in me and I start tweaking enemies to make them more unfair.

Anyway, after the little intro battles, I typically throw in all my weight as master and creator of the universe and smash all of my little players into each other from all corners of the map, along with my chief NPC (ie, the cute girl with mysterious powers and mysterious past being hunted by mysterious enemies), and then tell them all to RUN RUN RUN and FIGHT before they realize that I just pulled a Deus Ex Machina. Oh, depending on the campaign, this is also the point when my players start fighting amongst themselves.

From that point on, it’s on to the big finale of the first session, something marginally epic enough to make them interested in the game but not so big so as to seem I’m throwing everything in right at the beginning. After the big battle/chase/escape scene, my Npc sits down with the characters and essentially says, in dialogue designed to mask the fact that this is just a game and she is giving them orders straight from the GM: “Alright guys, I’m the main plot point of this game, so you’d better stick around me, and were gonna go somewhere now but I’m going to be very vague on where and why, partly so that you’ll be interested in learning the unfolding storyline (HAH!) and partly because the GM hasn’t quite made that up yet. So Lets GO!” And then I fall to the ground dying from disappointment in my own campaign. L

So that’s the first campaign. On to the player types:

The power...

Well, lately, as in the past three days or so, I've been listening to nothing but 50s and 60s instrumental Jazz.
o.0
Whats up with that? Am I getting old or something?
I blame Baccano! [link]
I finished watching this show like a week ago. It's absolutely awesome. The only shows that come close in terms of goodness from episode to episode imo are FLCL and maybe Avatar. This show has got the best writing I've seen in a long time.

Speaking of writing, I've started writing quite a lot now. Two days ago, a story Idea hit me at work and I've written out seven pages very quickly. That may not sound like a lot, but compared to my usual speed it's definitely memorable. Especially since I've also spent alot of time doing research for the story (it's set in 1934...yeah, it's Baccano inspired).

And now, in news that sucks, last Wednesday (i think), after suddenly discovering that Metal Gear Solid 4 was out, I went and immediately picked it up, then headed home to play it. My brother was using the computer to study for some sort of insurance job test thing or something, so he asked me to take the tv in the other room to play it. Well, I promptly broke my TV. So though I have MGS4, I have yet to even glimpse the opening screen.

Speaking of things that suck: Final Fantasy 7 Crisis Core. Damn, what an awful game. I tried to have an open mind about it. I tried to enjoy it. But seriously, it's one of the worst made games I've ever seen. It's obvious they thought they could just make ppl buy it by sticking in a few cameos from everyone's favorite rpg. (too bad they're right about that)

Wonder why I'm journalling all of the sudden? Me too. It's just cuz I'm bored, pure and simple. Lately, on DA, I've found myself not looking at Deviations and avoiding messages, I seem to be tired of DA a bit. Well, I'm certain it will pass. I have a number of colored drawings ready for post if I ever get a scanner, so those'll be up soon(?) See ya then.

And the sheer vast number of characters is amazing considering none of them seem boring. Like a George R.R. Martin book. Plus, I love Mafia stories, and the whole show is set in the 30's in America. Quite a refreshing change from most animes.
Whew, I'm back. It was a very long and tiring day. We got up at 6 in the morning, something I prefer to avoid doing, snatched my friends patrick and jeremy from theyre houses and headed for Dallas. We made it to the Sheraton hotel where it was being held about 7:40. Followed by a massive wait in line. I'm actually glad we didnt go with pre-registration- their line was longer. The line wasnt boring though, because we were presented with a continous parade of really bad and the occasionally passable cosplayers to gawk at. I'm not a fan of cosplay, but they are interesting to say the least. I saw very few good ones, but I did see good 2 rikkus, a fair kamina, and one almost disturbingly perfect dante.
After the long wait we were turned loose into the Kon.... only to realize that there was nothing actually happening for several hours.... so the first thing we did when we arrived at A-kon was leave A-kon for the nearby food court, where we saw a pretty good Haruhi.
The rest of the Kon was.... bad. Organization was terrible. Two of the events I went to was canceled for no reason that anyone could think of. The others I DID go to were exceptionally late, problematic, or laughably bad (the anime music ensemble..... ugh...). But aside from the badness, there were plenty of good things at the Kon. Artists alley was awesome- I met several artists from DeviantArt, a few new ones, and Hawk and Ananth from the webcomic Applegeeks (too bad Fred wasnt there though). The highest point was meeting my absolute favorite artist. I bought one of her awesome prints, and she showed us the comic she was working on, which I am eagerly awaiting. The traders room was full of stuff, but most of it didnt interest me. I did manage to spend some money though. Bought a FLCL poster, the box set of Battle Royale, a battle royale Shirt (coming in the mail). We ate a lot of bad food and stood aroudn alot. Mostly we just cruised the Kon.
The amv contest, my friend jeremy's(3 year veteran of A-kon) favorite event, started out pretty good but quickly turned pathetic once we got past the action amvs. The main event, the reason we came mostly, was for the concert, and on that account A-kon delivered. Not with the first band...(budo grape) who was kinda like polysics but much much worse. But Versailles, the headliner, was flat out awesome. They rocked. Normally at a show I stand quietly and maybe tap my foot to the beat. But Versailles had me moving, jumping and showing the horns the whole show, even though I was out of energy and ready to fall asleep. I think we kinda made Versailles day too. When they first came out they were all business. You know, dark, vacant looks, like half dead stares...(theyre a visual K band)... but after the absolutely awesome end song, we demanded more, and they came back out for an Encore. Once they came out again they were all smiles, they looked kinda overwhelmed. Theyre american agent dude told us it was a dream of theres to play america, and that we were a part of that dream. So it was pretty damn awesome. If theyre ever in town again(maybe next A-kon?) I'll definately go see them.

I am interested in this (Alucard voice):
[link]

Manga looks pretty good. I love how it's so Disgaea'ish. The characters act just like theyre in a video game- especially theyre weapons (weapons are peaple too): They just want to Level Up!
Apparently, this show is making a scene right now, but for some reason, I'm actually more interested in the Manga. I'll check out the show as well though.

Yesterday was an eventful day. I had to get medicine for my brand new dog, which took several trips all over the place. Anyway, then, right after I start to head off to work (to pick up my check, not to work lol) I heard something crying and whimpering from the gutter outside my house. I looked in and what do you know: a 3-4 month old puppy, lying in the sewer. Sigh. I had to save her of course... had to crawl around in the frickin' to do it. I checked all the houses on the whole street, no one missing a puppy...
I didnt much want the first dog...
now all of the sudden I've got two...
Oh well, she is exceptionally cute, so that counts for somethin.
Her name is Fox.

Well, after two and a half months of stagnation, my life is starting to move again. A few days ago I bought a dog (well, technicallly she was adopted, but I still had to pay for her) to guard my house while were gone. She's great, has already lived with cat's and is housebroken. I'll be picking her up to take her home tomorrow. What this means, is that now I can justify buying things again, since I dont believe they will be instantly stolen now. I have a computer on the way, which is something I've gone without for far too long, and once I get it I intend to get internet (WOOT), Photoshop, and start writing again (once I find out how much of my books have survived ). I also plan on buying a PS3 soon enough, so will at last have games again!
And lastly, I have recently borrowed/purchased (i'm not entirely sure which it is) a new acoustic guitar. I was playing it the other night and realised I hadnt touched a guitar in like 8 months. It felt very good to play again, but my fingers have gotten weak. I was, however, pleasantly surprised to find I remembered all my parts to our songs (my old band). This time I intend to learn on my own, as a dedicated pastime, before trying to get in with a band. Speaking of bands, my old group Betterman has apparently revived themselves, though I dont believe they're keeping the name. I cant wait to hear them.
All in all, things are looking up.
