Silent Hill - A small New England town founded in the late 18th or early 19th Century by a group of settlers making it a penal colony. The most noticeable group in Silent Hill is a corrupted version of Gnostic Christianity known simply as The Order. This cult has been divided in three different sects (although still connected) with the time. The Valtiel sect, the Holy Mother sect and the Saint Ladies sect.

Old Silent Hill – Primarily residential area, usually ignored by people on vacation.

*Midwich Elementary School – An elementary school in the southwest corner of Old Silent Hill. The only school actually shown in the game. Alessa was a student there and so was Lisa Garland.
*Balkan Church – A legitimate church, possibly Protestant, in Old Silent Hill. Virtually ignored by members of The Order. Henry has a photograph of the church in his bedroom.

Central Silent Hill – Business district made primarily for the use of tourists.

*Silent Hill Police Station – The headquarters of the Silent Hill police force and their (ineffective) war on Order-related drug trafficking.
*Silent Hill Towne Center – A shopping mall located in the northwestern section of Central Silent Hill. Dahlia Gillespie’s antique store (and secret chapel) is next door to the mall.
*Alchemilla Hospital – A hospital located in Central Silent Hill. The hospital serves as a front for the production and distribution of White Claudia. Alessa was once a patient there.

Silent Hill (resort area) – The tourist destination on the north side of Toluca Lake.

*The Lighthouse – The lighthouse on Toluca Lake, one of the town’s oldest structures.
*Lakeside Amusement Park – A theme park overlooking the lake.
*Lakeview Hotel – A fine resort hotel on the north shore of Toluca Lake.
*The Church – The central place of worship of The Order. Exact location is only known to Order members.

South Vale – The mainly residential, non-tourist destination town on the south side of Toluca Lake.

*Observation Deck – A scenic overlook along County Road 73 adjacent to a wooded hiking path.
*Woodside Apartments – An apartment complex built just next to the Blue Creek Apartments.
*Blue Creek Apartments – A small apartment building. Angela Orosco lived there.
*Rosewater Park – A park on the south shore of Toluca Lake. Contains a memorial to the people lost in the 1918 disappearance of the Little Baroness.
*Heaven’s Night – A gentleman’s club enjoying moderate fame in South Vale.
*Brookhaven Hospital – A hospital in South Vale. Originally founded in the 1860s as a Civil War field hospital.
*Silent Hill Historical Society – A historical museum on the edge of South Vale.
*Toluca Prison – A now-defunct prison originally used to house Civil War POWs. Exact location is not stated in the games, however it appears to be located beneath the Historical Society building. Possibly the building was built over the site of the unused prison. Though this may just be caused by James' dilusions, it is highly likely based on where James exits the Labyrinth that connects to it.

Toluca Lake – The lake, surrounded by forests, upon which the town of Silent Hill was founded.

*Wish House(aka Hope House) – A secluded, Order-run orphanage in the woods outside of Silent Hill.
*The Water Prison(aka Cylinder Prison, aka Panopticon) – A jail used by The Order to punish and brainwash the children living in the Wish House. While a stay there was used as a form of punishment, most of the childrens stays were scheduled. Most likely situated within a mile or two of Wish House.

Other Towns

Heather's town (nameless) – The town to which Harry and Heather moved in the witness protection program. At least a few hours’ drive from Silent Hill, possibly farther. Harry and Heather live here for twelve years prior to the events in Silent Hill 3.

*Central Square Shopping Center – A sleek, modern shopping center.
*Hazel Street Station – A subway station underneath the Central Square Shopping Center.
*Hilltop Center – An office building half a block down the street from Daisy Villa Apartments.
*Daisy Villa Apartments – Harry and Heather’s home on Bergen Street.

Silent Hill (film)

Silent Hill is the film adaptation of Konami's famous survival horror video game franchise. The story, though primarily based on the first Silent Hill game, will be a mélange of the first three. The film is expected for release on April 21, 2006 in North America. According to the French magazine "Score" the movie earns a 16+ rating in France while an 18a rating has been given in Canada. The US rating has been revealed in a TV Spot as an R-rating (it has also been confirmed on the MPAA website). The movie is 127 minutes long.

Synopsis

(Numerous plot synopses have appeared on the internet since the movie was first announced. The following summary is as it appears on the official website of the film, and as such can be considered final.)

The eerie and deserted town of Silent Hill, West Virginia draws a young mother desperate to find a cure for her only child's illness. Unable to accept the doctor's diagnosis that her daughter should be permanently institutionalized for psychiatric care, Rose (Radha Mitchell) flees with her child, heading for the abandoned town in search of answers – and ignoring the protests of her husband (Sean Bean).

It’s soon clear this place is unlike anywhere she’s ever been. It’s smothered by fog, inhabited by a variety of strange beings and periodically overcome by a living Darkness that literally transforms everything it touches. As Rose searches for her little girl, she begins to learn the history of the strange town and realizes that her daughter is just a pawn in a larger game.

Relationship to the Video Games

The film is known not to be direct adaptation of any one of the games, however, it does contain numerous apparent connections to the series. Many of these are purely thematic or aesthetic similarities to the games' distinctive style, but there are also various features which appear to be direct translations of their in-game counterparts.

While many of the film's main characters are original creations, it is confirmed that the police officer Cybil Bennet, from the original Silent Hill, will appear in the film. The film's trailer and still images also show a young girl resembling Rose's daughter in a formal school uniform, as well as a mysterious older woman. Information about these two characters is scarce, but it is reasonable to assume that their role will echo that of Dahlia and Alessa Gillespie from the first Silent Hill, with the high possibility that they will in fact be those characters. The character of Christabella appears to be original and does not appear in any of the games, but a little girl of the same name did appear in the Silent Hill graphic novel, Dying Inside.

Many of the creatures shown in the trailer also seem to be taken from the various games in the series, most notably the towering Pyramid Head from Silent Hill 2 (to the delight or chagrin of various followers of the series), and the ever-present Nurses.

The town itself has been recreated with a striking attention to detail, right down to the names of many of the town's shops (some of which are borderline Engrish). As a result, the street scenes are almost indistinguishable from those of Silent Hill 2 and Silent Hill 3. The memorable Midwich Elementary School from Silent Hill also appears, along with a hospital which is likely to be either Alchemilla Hospital (from Silent Hill) or Brookhaven Hospital (from Silent Hill 2 and Silent Hill 3).

Two scenes from the beginning of the first Silent Hill appear to have been recreated almost shot-for-shot, one which features Rose and her daughter driving towards Silent Hill, only to crash after swerving to avoid a ghostly figure in the road, and one where Rose is ambushed by grotesque humanoid creatures after discovering a mutilated body crucified on a chain-link fence.

Mock newspaper articles handed out at WonderCon also mention a police officer named Gucci - Officer Gucci was mentioned briefly in a note found inside a police station during the first game. This is possibly the most obscure detail included in a video game adaptation to date, and a good sign that the film's creators care about the source material. Speculation that Gucci is played by actor Kim Coates was confirmed when the "cast & crew" page was made available on the official site.

At this point, it is unknown if events in this film will be considered series canon.

Trivia

* In the original script, there were only female characters. After submitting a new script, the script was returned to Gans with a memo saying "there are no men!"....

Silent Hill is the title of a survival horror video game franchise, produced by Konami.

As of 2006, there are five Silent Hill games available (one available only in Japan), all of which were released to strong sales and critical acclaim. What distinguishes the Silent Hill games from other survival horror games (such as Resident Evil) is that Silent Hill focuses on story, character, and atmosphere rather than action and violence. There are plenty of monsters to fight in Silent Hill, and plenty of weapons with which to fight them. But there are also complex puzzles to solve, detailed--and often disturbing--environments to explore, and engaging stories revealed through numerous cinematic cut scenes. Each game unfolds like a movie with several possible endings; the player's choices during the game determine which ending actually occurs.

What is Silent Hill?

Silent Hill is a secluded, lakeside resort town in the United States which--like many such small towns in horror fiction and movies--is permeated by an ancient evil. Demonic creatures roam the streets and buildings, and the town continually shifts between normal reality and a decaying "Otherworld." In the first two games, the protagonists are drawn to the seemingly abandoned town; in the third and fourth games, the town's evil reaches out to characters who have some connection to the town.

Though Silent Hill's streets and buildings remain superficially unchanged from game to game, the horrors each character encounters are specific to him or her, reflecting his or her own psyche. Images and symbols recur throughout each game, providing insight into the character, plot, and underlying themes and creating a tightly interwoven and very personal horror story. This subtle continuity––the strong sense of underlying significance––increases the game’s feeling of dread. The recurring imagery also provides clues to the ultimate mystery underpinning each game and foreshadows the end of the story.

    * The first game focuses on Harry Mason and his search through Silent Hill for his missing daughter, Cheryl. He finds that the secret of Cheryl’s birth is closely tied to the activities of an ancient cult in Silent Hill. The game liberally mixes Christian religious imagery with hermetic and occult symbolism, as well as including many images related to children, childhood, and corrupted innocence. Images and symbols tend to be benign in the real world but take on a twisted, grotesque malevolence in the Otherworld, a dualism that will continue throughout the series.
* Silent Hill 2 follows James Sunderland who comes to Silent Hill searching for his wife. The game is filled with sexual imagery and symbolism, as well as images of torture, torment, and hell. In this game, the town acts as a metaphorical incarnation of a person's troubled psyche––a kind of purgatory in which people punish themselves for––or perhaps revel in––past crimes.
* The third game is a direct sequel to the first, this time following Harry’s daughter, Heather Mason, as she’s drawn back into the supernatural machinations of the Silent Hill cult. Silent Hill 3 combines the religious imagery of the first game with the psychological surrealism of the second, notably in the use of mother–child, birth, abortion, and miscarriage imagery, which foreshadow the story’s final revelations.
* In Silent Hill 4, the game’s imagery and symbolism reflect the psyche not of the game’s protagonist, but of its antagonist, Walter Sullivan. The player––like the protagonist, Henry Townshend––is drawn into Sullivan’s nightmare world and must slowly piece together his history through the creatures and settings encountered there. This game provides metaphors for birth, mothers, and references to the other Silent Hill games.

Because so many scenes in the Silent Hill games can be interpreted symbolically or metaphorically, it is often unclear whether the town’s grotesque transformations and the creatures and other characters the protagonist encounters are hallucinations, dreams, or reality. The games encourage this sense of altered reality: the main character might experience a dreamlike encounter with a character who died earlier in the game, step through a door and find himself transported to an unknown location, go back into an elevator and find a button for a floor that didn’t exist earlier, or have to make his way through a location called “Nowhere,” a twisted combination of previous locations with no guiding map. One of the possible endings in the first game even reveals that the entire story has been Harry Mason’s dying hallucination.

Silent Hill 1

* Air Screamers/Night Flutters - Pterodactyl-like demons. Their visage comes from Alessa's favorite book, The Lost World.
* Apparitions (Stalkers) - Partially visible, harmless ghost-like entities. They cause the radio to emit white noise and make squeaking noises before disappearing; cannot be killed.
* Blood Sucker - Large, parasitic worms that have an obsession with drinking blood. Although not really an enemy that is faced, they can kill with one attack; it's best to find other methods to deal with them.
* Claw Finger - A small, humanoid creature with clawed hands. Only present in the last part of the sewers (US version). They replace the mumblers in the PAL version.
* Demon Children (Mumblers) - Knife-wielding, toddler-like demon children. These were censored in the PAL version of the game (although they can still be found in the PAL version of the demo), and were replaced by Claw Fingers. The groans they make as they attack Harry is actually the sound of a child's laughter electronically slowed down. Quite possibly reference to the children that picked on Alessa as a child. Near the end of the game (nowhere), the Demon Children become invisible.
* Puppet Doctors - Monstrous doctors possessed by a parasite who attack using a scalpel.
* Puppet Nurses - Monstrous nurses wearing old fashioned attire who attack using a scalpel. They also are controlled by a parasite, giving them a humpbacked appearance.
* Rompers - Gorilla-like creatures that are fast, deadly and very difficult to kill.
* Groaners - Demonic dogs with decaying flesh. They're fast and nimble and attack in packs.
* Hanged Scratchers - Found in the sewers. They usually ambush in numbers and can be difficult to kill.
* Wormheads - Similar to the Groaners but faster and stronger.
* Cockroachs (Creepers) - Big insects that lurk in school and the sewers. They can easily be killed with a blank weapon.

Silent Hill 2

* Nurses (Bubble head Nurses) - The nurses wear suggestive outfits and have heavily distorted and bruised bandaged faces that twitch rapidly. The nurses are quicker on their feet than most of the other monsters and wield deadly lead pipes that can do heavy damage. A range weapon such as a shotgun is mostly recomended for dealing with this monster. They usualy come in groups of 1-4. They represent Mary's hospitalization. Their suggestive attire is a manifestation of James Sunderland's sexual repression because of his wife Mary's hospitalization due to her terminal illness. These nurses are also the base model used of what is seen in clips from the film adaptation of Silent Hill.
* Doormen (Abstract Daddy/Table Daddy) - The Abstract Daddy's appearance suggests rape or some kind of assault. It looks like a large humanoid figure over a smaller figure on a door frame. It has four legs which are used to approach a victim. The creature lifts it's body and reveals a "mouth" that is used to attack. Supposedly, Thomas Orosco, Angela 's father tried to assault Angela. She tried to escape but her father prevented her and assaulted her on the door. After the boss Abstract Daddy, small versions are encountered which represent the weaker James suffocating his wife. They are quite slow but inflict heavy damage. Attack from a distance as all ways.
* Mandarins - Giant-armed monsters which hang from gratings. Similar to the Closers found in Silent Hill 3. They represent James' anguish and for this reason are not allowed to stand above ground. Usually they will be seen hanging under grating and bite James as he passes overhead. Should be ignored as they aren't encountered very often and can only attack you throug the grates.
* Mannequins - Headless, armless living sewing dummies. These monsters consist of a human's torso and legs, upon which rest two more legs standing upright. The top pair of legs are used for striking while the bottom pair are used for walking. They tend to stand still and in plain sight until approached and then they start to attack. Another symbol of James' sexual frustration and objectification of women, as Pyramid Head is seen early on brutally raping two of them. A common enemy that inflicts normal damage. Can be seen jumping off buildings or behind bushes outside and while inside, may suddenly walk out of closets after staying motionless for a few second...

Silent Hill 1

    * Harry Mason is a writer and a single father. Seven years before the start of the game, Harry and his terminally ill wife found an infant abandoned at the side of the road near Silent Hill. They adopted the girl and named her Cheryl. After his wife's death, Harry continued to raise Cheryl alone. Several years ago Harry and Cheryl went to Silent Hill for a vacation. As they neared town, Harry's jeep left the road when Harry swerved to avoid a pedestrian. Upon waking after the crash, Harry found himself alone in Silent Hill and on a quest to find his lost daughter. Along the way, Harry learned the truth: that his daughter was connected to a cult operating in Silent Hill and she was part of a grand scheme by the cult to give life to a demon. Harry was able to defeat the demon and before he escaped, he was given a new infant girl. For further information on Harry and the infant, see the Silent Hill 3 section below.
* Cheryl Mason is Harry's seven-year-old adopted daughter. When she and her father went to Silent Hill on vacation, she disappeared. She was drawn to the town through mystical purposes further explained below in the segment about Alessa Gillespie.
* Cybil Bennett is a police officer from Brahms, a town neighboring Silent Hill. She was sent to investigate her precinct's lack of communication with the Silent Hill police and was drawn into the strange world of the town. She quickly befriends Harry and helps him to find his daughter. As she is the only character not inexorably vital to the plot line, her fate can change due to the player’s actions during the game. As with James/Laura in Silent Hill 2, it seems that the monsters may only be part of the central character's experience (except for Kaufmann who identifies with them and is seen wrestling with a claw finger in a pool hall in the resort); Cybil implies she has seen no monsters, although she does acknowledge that the roads leading away from town are unusable, along with her police radio and the local telephones, and near the end of the game she is attacked by a parasite, similar to those found infecting the staff of Alchemilla Hospital.
* Dr. Michael Kaufmann is the director of medical staff at Alchemilla Hospital. Harry comes to discover that Kaufmann is a high-ranking member of the cult in Silent Hill. He was one of the people who arranged Alessa’s birth and medical care. In addition to operating the cult, Kaufmann is also a drug lord, dealing exclusively in the hallucinogen PTV, derived from a local narcotic called White Claudia. He dispenses this drug to many members of the hospital staff, getting them addicted to ensure their loyalty.
* Lisa Garland was a nurse on the staff of Alchemilla Hospital. Like many of the members of the hospital staff, she was addicted to White Claudia and would perform any request of Dr. Kaufmann to keep him from cutting off her supply. One of the duties Lisa had to perform was taking care of the comatose Alessa Gillespie; as Heather in Silent Hill 3, Alessa recounts her memories of Lisa fondly. As the game progresses Lisa slowly realises that she is a monster, which explains how she is trapped in the Otherworld. Lisa, as stated in a few Silent Hill guides and walkthroughs, in the game was a "ghost". She was a manifestation, from Alessa's fond memories of her, in the Otherworld. However, she was essentially no different than the other monsters Alessa created. In a way Lisa was being used by Alessa to stop or at the very least slow Harry's quest to find his daughter. By playing on Harry's desire to help and do the right thing perhaps he would stop his search of the Otherworld which would in turn would stop Dahlia from discovering her hiding place there. Lisa was killed by Dr. Kaufmann, presumably in order to stop her going to the authorities with her knowledge of Alessa and the drug racket.
* Dahlia Gillespie is an eccentric old woman who owns an antique store in Silent Hill. Underneath this façade, Dahlia is a key member of the Silent Hill cult and the mastermind behind Alessa’s birth and injury. Dahlia is Alessa's mother, though their relationship was anything but loving. Dahlia coerced Harry, via his quest to find his missing daughter, into helping her find and subdue Alessa in the Otherworld so she could make the girl birth the God. Upon the God’s birth, Dahlia was killed by either the Holy Woman in White(Incubator) or by Incubus.
* Alessa Gillespie is the enigamtic aparation that Harry Mason encounters during his journey into the hellish town at the start of the game. It is revealled that Alessa was originally meant to take in her m...
