I've been sick for a week. After 24 episodes and 2 movies of Stargate (+ some other movies) I got tired of receiving. So I started producing. I looked at my piling photo folders, which hadn't been properly organized since 2006. I had done occasional clean-ups and organizing, but nothing this thorough.

I categorized a few thousand photographs from 2006 and moved on to 2007. While organizing, I didn't really pay attention to the quality of the photographs, but some of them caught my eye, and I decided to publish them straight away. There wasn't anything else to do, other than watching Stargate, which I had already done rather intensively for almost a week. This was something I had meant to do for a very long time, but never really got myself to do it. It's very inspiring, though it takes ages and seems endless. It reminded me, once again, of the importance of adventures.

As soon as I get on my feet, I promise to go out, take photographs, and publish them. I've allowed myself to be way too busy with work. Composing music, as fun as it is, cannot replace photography, and maybe I've also had those two out of balance. More photography, less work and lots of composing. Now I only wish somebody would remind me of this, OR get me a super big deal so that I don't have to worry about marketing projects for the next five years or so.

For two weeks my computer was broken. I almost got a Mac, but then I suddenly found out what was wrong with my laptop and got it fixed. The problem was so irrational that I couldn't locate it - who knew that a (broken) power source could provide only a small bit of the power needed and thus slow the processor and such? Seems that it's possible.

I got A LOT done outside the computer world - cleaning and organizing for instance. I wish I could somehow simulate this situation to get the same results...

Went to a rave tonight - for the first time. It was pretty neat. Good for dancing, but that kind of music wouldn't last listening. Yeah! Now I understand why Scooter fans aren't too picky about the music - it's all about the bass drum, bleeping leads and dancing.

If you have any suggestions on which I should choose, feel free to give me a hint. I'm thinking there should be some older shots too, ranging from 2006 to this day.

And now that I think about printing my images, should I have a prints account here in dA? I've been pretty strict about uploading photographs only in small size (800 x sumthin&#039, because I haven't wanted to think about their printability. So, prints, anyone? Worth the trouble? I do enjoy most of my art digitally, and love it. I don't have to OWN the art to enjoy it, let alone carry it from one place to another (when moving, for instance). Owning sucks anyway.

I've been composing music for my first album since the end of last year. I set a goal, that I should have 12 songs written by December 2008. I already have 9.

I'm going to use my photographs as the cover art for the record, if there ever will be a physical record. The CD format is kinda dying, and I thought it might be a good time to revolutionalize the publishing method a bit. I'm thinking about a booklet without the CD, provided with a download code. That's the way I would like it to be - I wouldn't want to lose the visual/physical artwork that comes with music. As a graphic designer I want to dress my music with my photographs, because those are the things I see. My music might be less mysterious than the photographs, but it's good to keep some sort of a balance there. I've actually written a song about wandering in a storm drain, so maybe the photographs and the music are not that far after all.

I will be releasing my first album at some point in 2009. It doesn't have to be perfect, I just need to do it. It's a start.

For over a month I've felt pretty restrained photographically because there has been no light and it's also been raining most of the time. Though if my equipment would be state-of-the-art (water protected and noiseless ISO 12800), I would probably shoot in the dark too. But my love for colours, texture, forms and light isn't really flaming as any of those cannot be seen.

So I draw a conclusion - my inspiration needs light. Or at least some changing circumstances, otherwise my senses will be less receptive for artistic impulses.

To celebrate my small-and-not-so-meaningful "milestone" of 5,000 pageviews I decided to update my framing to match my current logo. I think it's already looking much better than the old "only black frames" approach, so I think I'll stick to it. Recently I've received some very uplifting feedback and I'm grateful for that, thank you everyone, I love you.

Soon I will launch [link], but it's still in the making. I need to design the layout and the other contents that will be there for your entertainment. It may sound ridiculous, but I think it's going to be something of a portal for the things I'm doing. Our company, Netura, has also some major plans to take over the world, and I'll tell you more about them in the forthcoming months as we progress. Our content management system for webstores and websites, attached to our groundbreaking methods and deals will be awesome. But until then, I'll just keep my head cool and humbly submit photographs for the world to have a glimpse of what I think is worth seeing. I could also tell you about our reseller program, but this might not be a good place for that. After all, it's just a place to put my ART to, not a business platform. While I hate being classified as a businessman, I find it very rewarding to be able to make a living with the things me and my company have made from scratch.

There might be a joint-effort-series'o'photographs by me and Rustymetall, something like my recent industrial series, Maze, was.

I've thought about this many times...how much does a thumbnail guide your viewing experience? Sometimes a thumbnail can be very cool and inviting, but the actual image is just crap. And sometimes a really ugly thumbnail can prove to be an outstanding image. But how many great images are left alone just because they look bad in a thumbnail? I'm not complaining, I don't care if you like my thumbnails or not - I'm just interested how people get interested in artists' images. In general, I think it's related to the "radio phenomenon"...that a song must convince the listener in just a few seconds, and the same goes with images.

As I suspected, I didn't really like the new layout of Deviantart v6. There are a number of things that bug me, but most of all I don't like it being so inconsistent - there are remnants of the previous layout and some new parts mixed and they really don't fit so well together. There is this sharp-edge box part, and then some rounded corners and some dark colours and then some light colours. I also wonder why the comments for a deviation have been forced into such a small space, making it more difficult to see the reply structure. The commenting box has also become uglier since it's now white, and the font is, not only inconsistent with the rest of the layout, but also damn ugly (unstyled).

Some features are also pretty bad, even though I see that at least they've tried to make it better.
Along with this "upgrade" some really nifty features have been removed, which I find really odd and wrong. One of these features is the "new messages" section, where there used to be a clear separation of which kind of new messages have arrived, now it only states that there are "this many new messages". Another missing feature is the ability to open a deviation already at full size, not having to click it bigger. Why have these great features been removed?

While the majority of this "upgrade" is more or less stepping backward, there are some things that have gone forth. First of all, the search is actually working (for non-subscribers too)! Incredible. I think this is an attempt to keep up the pace in the race with Flickr, DA just cannot compete without a decent search. The thumbnails are now bigger, and what I really like is how the front page shows as many deviations as your resolution can handle, so that the 800x600 users get 3 deviations and the bigger your resolution gets, the more deviations you see. Galleries also use the same system, but they still show only 24 art pieces per page.

Generally I like the way buttons and links and such are "hidden" to save space, but in the button column of the deviation view page I find the popping-up explanation texts disturbing and redundant. They could very well just be normal alt-texts (you know, the ones that come up when you point at an object for a while).

The user page has also gotten some positive attention, since now there are four thumbs of recent works instead of just one. Otherwise I find the changes rather minor. I like the way the "submission buttons" are now in one place. One thing that I kinda missed, that has also been removed (or hidden so that I didn't find it) is the artist's gender. I find it interesting whether an artist is male of female. Don't know exactly why, but maybe it somehow helps to see things from the artists perspective. It's not the point, I know, but anyway, I wonder why the gender information has been removed.

Oh, and I still have to mention that I hate the "moods" thingie. Although it is a logical progression for this place, as it's becoming more and more like a playground for wannabe-artists (like me?).

Don't know if the "friends" button in the upper right corner is just another redundant feature or a handy addition.

That's all for now, I need to experiment more with this new system.

A week and a few hours ago I started driving towards Helsinki to participate in a visit to an inactive power plant, which is right next to a working power plant in Hanasaari, Helsinki. The (nowadays inactive) power plant was built in the beginning of the sixties and seized production in the year 2000. It is still capable of power production, but it will not be that for long, it's scheduled for demolition in 2007 or 2008. This plant is called "the power plant A" and the newer, built 1974 is logically "plant B" and it'll continue producing power 14 more years (estimated shutdown year 2020).

Finland's UE scene has been growing, or at least organizing, mainly because of the rather newly founded forum. There was some talk about organizing a visit to the power plant A of Hanasaari, and one of the forum members was willing to organize a visit (what a kind thing to do). The plant has been used for a number of music videos and some other projects, so this was a rather easy-to-organize visit for the owner company.

So, on Monday the 12th of June this rather unusual UE visit took place. I tried to get to the power plant by car from my friend's place. I supposed it would've been easy to find the place because the distance was only about one kilometer...but since I don't know Helsinki too well I didn't get there on time. So the others had to wait for me a while (sorry, guys). But they seemed not-too-angry and the tour started off nicely.

The place was huge (though the newer one is even bigger, maybe a similar visit will be arranged to the power plant B in 2020...). First we were guided through the power plant from the highest floor to the ground level. I took pictures during this first round, even though there would be another round, mainly meant for photography. We were told about the history of the place and how the demand for electricity had changed to the demand for heating. The output of the active plant consists mainly of heat production, the city is being held warm by the power plant, only 1/3 of the energy is in the form of electricity.

Huge coal burning devices, bottomless coal shafts, pipes running all over the place, lovely metal-grid-floors (you could many floors down underneath you). All the original devices were there, and this is a really rare sight for an urban explorer. And for a photographer this was also very suitable, because the place was actually lit...there were lights all over the place. Of course all the original lighting wasn't there anymore, but still it was very well lit and it was rather easy to take photographs without external flash.

We also got to check the roof of the power plant. What a beautiful view to the sea, the industrial harbour and the centre of Helsinki.

I shot a good number of textures. There were LOTS of great surfaces to be shot. All this material will be used in my work as a graphic designer. I only wish I could create more grunge layouts, I would have loads of material for that. If I had a stock account in DA (which I have given some serious thought many times, but never done that...I might be too selfish to do that, though I know it would not be of any harm to me, more likely the contrary), I would put these textures available there. What a monster of a sentence. Anyway...

It was lots of fun to explore the place, though there was a constant feeling of being a bit restrained because of the guides. But I managed to get rid of that feeling quite effectively, since I knew they wouldn't care if I took some liberties in sneaking into some places. Some great photographs were found "off-route"...you'll see. I will publish at least six more photographs from this visit.

Of course you will not get a very good picture of the place because I don't do documentary photography, others are more interested in that and will do a better job in that, so maybe a link will follow.

That's all for now, enjoy the series!
More pictures to be uploaded next week.

I just noticed that I've passed 4000 pageviews. It doesn't really mean much to me. I can see that there is a slight increase in the audience, and that feels rather good. More than pageviews I care about my progress as a photographer. I just submitted an image from about a year ago, and as it was standing next to an image taken a few weeks ago, the recognizable characteristics were quite obviously present. Just like songwriters have their one or two songs that they keep on writing all over again, a photographer has a few images he/she keeps on taking. Again and again. I guess it doesn't matter as long as the art produced is of high quality and keeps on delighting the artist and the audience.

I have a lot of "forgotten art" hiding on my hard drives, and I've been trying to dig that out by creating a "submission line". Basically it's just a folder to place photos, that could use some attention. As stoneage as it sounds, it has helped me to get things published. There will be alot of older stuff flowing in, as well as a bunch of new images. Of course the newer stuff comes first.

I'm spending my 22nd birthday in Newcastle upon Tyne, United Kingdom. Yesterday I saw Pet Shop Boys live for the first time, and it was fabulous. Not a normal show, since the band was not really the point, but the mute film they made the soundtrack for; Battleship Potemkin. The music sure was alot more dramatic with the film than without it. It was cold as hell, and we (me and my girlfriend) were quite underprepared...anyway it was a wonderful show and worth all the zillions of pounds spent to get here.

We had to sleep at the airport and the bus that was supposed to take us from the airport the Victoria station. Due to some misunderstandings, we never caught the bus from Victoria to Newcastle, so we had to take the train (there were various other things complicating this, but I won't go into details). In the train we had no seats, so we sat on the floor for the whole trip (3 hours), also slept there. Sleeping on different floors, in a cafe, a train...

Also, getting the tickets to the actual event would have been impossible without the help of our kind host, Kathryn. She was waiting for us at the railway station and took us first to the supposed ticket-picking-up-point, the tourist information centre. Of course there were two tourist infos and we went first to the wrong one. When we finally got to the actual picking-up-point, the tourist office was closed. So...we had to head for the event area. This would have also been very much complicated without Kathryn (and her car). She drove us there and the staff told us to go from one place to another, finding another person, since they couldn't help. Well, after some four groups of staff we found a person that was able to help us. Kathryn wasn't willing to give up, and neither was I...I didn't come all the way just to be turned down. So, with some stubbornness, patience, and proof (e-mails) we were able to get our tickets. What a relief.

As we had our tickets, we had time to get to Kathryn's place, settle in, make some food, chat and relax... With a few ours of relaxation we were good to go, underclothed, but ready. Metro took us very close to the event and we had some more food (hadn't really had time to eat properly for a few days, and even though we just ate before getting to the place, we were still hungry). Baked potatoes with cheese and beans - mmm. We stood there for one and a half hour and then the show began. The audio system was brilliant, not too loud but loud enough to feel like a concert. The film was very dramatic and I think the soundtrack was quite appropriate for it. In the music, you could really hear the respect for the events taking place in the film. The whole shipyard (the event area) was covered with gorgeous coloured lighting...the cranes around looked really mysterious. This was a perfect place to hold such an event. I was a bit afraid of rain, since it rained in London when we got there, but luckily we we spared from that.

And today...started slow and will be a slow. We've earned some rest. But who knows what kind of adventures lie beyond...at least some photographs will be taken.

Have a good life, people.

In my answer to a comment by not-in-my-lifetime [link] I explained briefly about my image naming process, it made me analyze more about the way I give names to my images. Here is an expanded version of my reply.

A few words about my photograph naming process
I don't usually name my photos after the first thoughts that have been awaken by the image. When I look at the photo, a number of thoughts, ideas, problems and general phenomenons start flowing. I let my thoughts fly for a while and then pick up a name. Usually it's not directly connected to the photograph, it's just a phase in my thought process. And sometimes (quite often, actually) the names don't make any sense at all. I don't see any point in naming the picture after the things that can be seen in it, because those things are already in your mind. Well, in my case, the images are mostly quite abstract, without a distinct object to point the name at, and thus the name could actually help in grasping what is being shown. On the other hand, that's not what I want. What the image is taken of, is not important. More important is what it looks like.

There are a few reasons why I don't name my photos the obvious way. Firstly, I don't want to guide the viewing experience too much, and secondly it's more interesting to see what an indirect connection (i.e. the unexpected name of an image) to the contents can do to the viewing experience. Even right now I make it sound too complicated, 'cause it really isn't that big a part of my workflow. But still I have my reasons to name my pictures the way I do. Sometimes it seems that there is simply no point, even though I have given some careful thought to the name. And I don't even see the importance of thinking the names too much, an art piece becomes complete when it meets the audience. So if I name a picture, which will become seemingly insane, someone finds a personal meaning in that particular name. And that's the power of wicked randomness!

In the picture description field I usually tell something about the thoughts that led me to choose the name for the image. But the origin of the thoughts is in the image...directly or indirectly. Of course my real life experiences are also very closely connected to my personal viewing experience, and thus the thoughts arisen by the image might not seem very close to the actual contents. And sometimes I just like to speak my mind, and connect the thoughts to the photo, without trying to weave them artificially together.

Vector graphics is not a new thing for me, but I sure need to expand my skills on that area.
Oh my - I've been quite UE-active lately.

1st of Nov
Local university tunnels. Underground maintenance pipes and buried students (they knew too much).

3rd of Nov
Local old bus station (it's being demolished) at night. Creepy & fun.

5th of Nov
Bus station again, this time in daylight. Shooting. Some pictures to be released from this trip!

6th of Nov
- An old limestone quarry in Montola (revisited).
- And old furniture factory in Suonenjoki. Great mould downstairs! With more time and equipment I would've taken some pretty "ewh" shots. It was the greatest mould ever!

7th of Nov
Trying to revisit university tunnels again with Aisling - with no luck. At least I met a new urban explorer, some co-operational trips might follow!

9th of Nov
A soon-to-be-demolished slaughterhouse in Pori. It was very, very dark and I left the place without any photographs (again!). Well, some pretty good photos could've been taken in daylight - but at night they would've turned more like documentary shots. So I skipped the photos and concentrated more on the actual exploring. Afterwards I realized how much I actually NEED to photograph in those places. After all, photography was the original reason why I started exploring.

11th of Nov (coming)
Something in Suonenjoki or Pieksämäki.

I don't know if I want to hide my gallery to support the cause. I have less than 2000 pageviews in about 20 months, so my influence isn't that big. I know that hiding my gallery is the least I can do to support the "community spirit", but before I know what is really going on, I won't take any action.

It would be of great help in creating worldwide UE contacts. I'm currently running a website company, so I might also have the time to do such a site. With the help of the community, of course.

I know there are several UE sites out there, but they usually seem to be centrified to a certain area (which makes sense, but I'd like to do something with more functionality).

I have a simple folder-based archive, with a few main categories and some subcategories. This system is adequate, but I'm looking for ways to improve it. I'd like to preserve the folder system (at least the main categories), because I don't want to be dependant on some particular image archiving software. The program could crash and ruin the image information database...and most likely it won't be compatible with other programs.

Is there any archiving program that creates folders for the images? Moving images in Windows Explorer is rather time-consuming. Also any tips for a replacement program for Windows Explorer would be appreciated.

I know Adobe has a program for this, but is it good? Any user experiences? If you have a great folder-based archiving method, please let me know!

Took LOTS of macro shots, and...oh boy...there were some pretty nice pieces. Most of all I found some decent "stock material" - some very detailed and pleasantly coloured texture shots.
After a while of pondering I decided to test-drive my digital art pieces here in DA. I'm still wondering whether I should establish a stand-alone site. In the meantime I'll submit my art here and see what you think about it.

For so long I wanted to keep this a photography-only account, but why should it be like that? Photography is just one way to express myself.

I'm pretty convinced you'll like my digital art more than my photographs. Anyway, I'll still submit photographs too. Who knows if someday I'll let you hear some of my music also.

I've kept my gallery clear of any non-photographic graphics, but now I've started to question my motives. There are lots of Photoshop art pieces, but nobody ever gets to see them if I don't make them public in some way.

I wonder whether this calls for a separate site (or another DA account) to submit my graphical creations (others than photos; computer art, website layouts).
The original reason for me to create a DA account was to create a gallery for my photographic art, but in the end that's not all I want to be remembered of.

After all I'm a graphic designer, and I nearly always use my photos in my graphical creations. And that must have affected the way I take photographs.

Maybe I really should make a digital art website. What do you think?
A small example of my style can be found in my DevID.
