This week I started my prepping for HeroesCon.  The hotel has been ordered.  Same for the tickets.  I've preordered a couple of mini-sketches from Dave Wachter.  Dave is awesome.  I have several pieces from him.  You can never have enough Dave Wachter art.  Great artist - great guy.

Last weekend I attempted to book a room at the Westin for Heroes Con.  They were sold out.  A couple of calls later and I decided to go ahead and book a room at the Hampton.  It's a nice hotel -- offers a free breakfast and is actually cheaper than the Westin.  I also ordered my ticket for the show.  So all that is handled.

Now I've started working through the guest list narrowing down who I should approach for a sketch.  Man, the guest list gets bigger each year.  Unfortunately my con budget doesn't.

I took the first step towards prepping for my annual trip to HeroesCon.  I went online to reserve a room for the wife and I at the Westin.  Word came back it was sold out.  What!  This has happened before and then new rooms were opened up.  Hopefully that will be the case.  If not I do have one of their Starwood preferred accounts, so maybe that will help.  We shall see.

I went to MegaCon last weekend.  For the first time since I can remember, I was a bit disappointed.  I still had fun, but just not as much.  Usually, Beatty and I hang at his table (when I'm not scouting for Stallone sketch artists).  This year, John didn't stay in Orlando and was late getting to the show on Friday and Saturday.  Also, I didn't find any new artists for sketches.

Last night the UFC had free fights on.  The prelims started on FX at 5pm and ran until 8.  Then at 8 the main event was shown on FOX.  It was a great night of fights.  Hopefully the ratings were good and we'll see more fight cards that run on both channels.

I'm looking forward to the Super Bowl and am pulling for the 49ers since my buddy is Joe Staley's cousin.

2012 was a good year.  Like all years, it had ups and downs, but overall, it was heading into the right direction... a better year in 2013!

I am so glad the election is over.  I'm not surprised Barack Obama won.  Actually, I thought that the race would have been called earlier than it actually was.  Hopefully, we see the two parties coming together to get good things done.  I appreciate the posts that I've seen calling for just that.  Rather than argue with those who demonize the other side, I think it's time to just ignore them.

I recently commissioned three headshot sketches from Jenn Lee.  The experience was a total delight.  The prices were extremely reasonable and Jenn kept me informed of my progress through the waiting line.  Because Jenn was in the process of moving, she informed me it would be a little longer to mail me the sketches than she anticipated.  I was cool with that.

Sons of Anarchy has never been better.  Each episode turns the screws a bit more.  In last week's episode a major character (and my favorite on the show) was killed.  The death was brutal and will have ramifications through the rest of the series.  I can't wait to see the next episode.  THAT's great television.

The Expendables 2 opened this weekend.  You know I liked it.  No surprise there, huh? It was fun, but if push came to shove (and it often does with The Expendables), I think I'd pick the first over the second by a hair.  I'm know I'm in the minority on that opinion, at least with the folks I saw Exp 2 with and most reviewers.  No matter though, because I dug 'em both.  I wouldn't mind seeing a third outing.

The Olympics ends today.  I think if it had gone longer, I'd have suffered from sports overdose.  Don't get me wrong, I've enjoyed the coverage.  We've probably watched more of the 2012 Olympics than any other year.  Sad to say, I didn't see much coverage of wrestling, weightlifting or pie eating.

The Expendables 2 starts next weekend.  Be there.  That's a requirement.

If you haven't read any of Christopher Farnsworrth's Cade novels, then you might want to check him out.  Cade is a 140 year old vampire in the service of the US government.  Farnsworth has created a unique character that lives in a world where the monsters from our childhood sometimes appear..  Highest recommendation - there have been 3 novels so far and all are excellent!

The past few weeks have been really busy at work and so we the next few as we gear up to wind down.  So much to do, and I look forward to getting it done.

I finished reading Volk's Game by Brent Ghelfi and right away sought out Shadow of the Wolf by Ghelfi [another in the Volk series].  If you like crime fiction, then you might want to check out Ghelfi.  His character Volk is a Russian ex-soldier and isn't your typical tough guy with a heart of gold.  Volk's Game isn't for the faint of heart.  I enjoyed it though... and that kind of scares me.  ; )

I'm back from seeing LOCK OUT and I absolutely loved it.  Think Escape from New York in Space and you've got an idea of what to expect.  Guy Pearce was perfect as Snow, there's plenty of action, just the right amount of humor and a prison full of the worst convicts imaginable.  Tell me that's not the right combo for a Sunday outing.

I just started reading Jonathon Maberry's The Dragon Factory.  It's the second in his Joe Ledger series and so far I am digging it.   It looks like Maberry has another winner.

I'm currently reading and enjoying [although I miss his Burke series], Andrew Vachss' That's How I Roll.

Last night I watched [with two people who'd never seen it before] the Robert Mitchum classic, "Night of the Hunter."  They just don't make movies like that anymore.  Well worth a look [or a re-visit if you've seen it before].

There's only one episode of "Justified" left this season and it's building to a killer climax.  Last week was one of the best written episodes yet.

Any Stephen King fans out there?  I've been reading King's 11/22/63 and can not put it down.  11/22/63 involves a regular guy [a high school teacher] who travels back in time with the hope of stopping the assassination of President Kennedy.  I'm 700+ pages in [of 850] and I can't wait to see how it turns out.

This has been a busy week.  Had some days off so we've worked around the house, visited the tax man [we owe this year... boo!], watched a lot of March Madness and reserved a room and purchased passes for HeroesCon.

Whoa.  Did you catch last Sunday's The Walking Dead.  What a well-done episode.  I knew that [redacted] was going to die, but the way it was written, filmed an acted was classic stuff.  I enjoyed the fact that [redacted] came back as a zombie proving that once and for all you don't have to be [redacted] to [redacted].  There was also a cool nod to the comic to have [redacted] kill [redacted].  Can't wait for tonight's episode for the season ending action.

I think today may be a lazy Sunday.  If so, I'm all for it.  It's been hectic, as always, at work.  Then yesterday we cleaned out the garage [well, most of it,anyway], took a load of things to Goodwill, another load to Mike's and then made it to Chris' car wash fundraiser.  So, yeah, this afternoon the couch, a good book and I might get to know each other a little better.

Last week John Beatty and I made our annual trip to MegaCon.  It was one of the most fun MegaCons in recent memory.  It was great hanging out with Big Beatty.  We don't get to do that near as much any more.

Bob McLeod was sketching at the table next to us.  It's always great to see Bob.

John Higashi was at the show and he put in a good word with Phil Hester for me.  Beatty and I also got to have dinner and hang out on Saturday night with Higashi -- which is always a blast.
