why am i so rubbish at animating lol.

I had a conversation with my friend Azad the other day about this. I belive that animation is and art form in itself and should always be considered that way. Like drawing, there's always and element of natural abilty that spands outside of what you can get from just learning.

seeing in motion is a talent, I find very difficult outside the realms of a still image. Do you think that this is like being a writter, drawer, runner, singer in that you have somthing which gives you that little bit extra?

It is a difficult question. Are we all equal but at different skill levels or do people just 'have it'?

Anyway... I have been working on a comic for a while and decided to change it, this was the first page:-

The colour work is ok, but the line art lacked detial and character. So I have completely changed the idea style layout story (pretty much everything).

I really wanted to do a comic that had pencil line art no inks. I have not seen a comic do this before and have yet to see any decent example to get me on the right path. If anyone knows of some cool pencil comic artists plesae help me out by letting me know. Really like to see some cool examples.

Just wondering weather or not this is in fact a bad idea. What do you guys think?

Or shall I just shut up and get on with it lol.

I just can't do it. I can't creat this realistic yet correct approach to my work in Max. Somehow I managed to create a body along the lines of somthing beliveable and not to terribly out of proportion:-

But even this has a ridiculus amount of five sided polygons and triangles (something a game engine cannot tolerate to work efficiently). So I scoured books for tutourials and even the vastness of the web produced nothing of use (yet for some reason I found a huge amount of tutourial resource on the female body- still not much help with an athletic toned male physique). Apart from this LITTLE setback I am moving smoothly along with my degree.

On another note I am playing through fallout three, and what a game that is! It is a masterpeice, thats all I am gonna say. If you get a chance to play it don't turn it down you'll regret it lol. Cheers for recomending it to me guys.

Hopefully post stuff up soon, dw I havn't abandoned DA hehe

Hey guys,

This is a shout out to my uni buddies. Anybody know how to animate picking up an object. I know there's two ways..

-- Using IK blend on a keyframe.

-- Hide and unhide the object on keyframes.

I tried both but I am still struggling to get it right. The IK method keeps giving some very distored poses whenever I changed the posistion of another biped object. I then tried the visibility method but it reffuses to change on keyframes ( i.e. its is either hidden or visible throughout the whole time segment).

If your having the same trouble let me know and maybe we can try and sort it out. Or its just me being stupid ...

Listen to me when I tell you ! Buy it lol

It's a fantastic comic, I finally got round to reading it after a friend told me of it . The artists are outstanding in particular Glen Fabry and Simon Bisley - i bought his version. If you see it check it out its really cool.

I'm hooked on graphic novels now, anyone else know of some really cool ones I could cheek out - not manga lol or Street fighter (AZAD! LOL). Would like to sink my teeth into another story soon.

This has officially been the the last week I will spend at home until I move back up to Teesside - Middlesbourgh to start my second year of university. I am really looking forward to starting working again, I don't like to be away from at related work for long periods... Plus some old faces that were such a laugh to spend time with in my first year, hoping to make some more memories this time around too.

As for all my good friends here on DA, I will be looking forward to being active on here a lot more now. The help I got last year from this site and you guys was great! Plus I hope any help you got from me was helpfull too .

In the WIP folder for me:-

1: Earth zoom animation along with 'opening titles' mock film video.

2: Sci Fi War torn city - yet to be named.. about 40% done

3: Loads of speedies planned very soon.

P:S Cheers to Nick for hitting that milestone for me much appriciatetion.

Yeah I took about 4 before a went to bed and they worked, I did sleep. But I probably should have taken some earlier because I didn't actually finish working on my newest painting till 3 haha

I woke up this morning feeling great, babies didn't sleep aswell as I did. I was chuffed, until I looked at the clock - 3:30 in the afternoon! What the hell lol I have been in a comma for 12 hours!

I'm gonna try them one more time, this time try taking them at 11:00 and going to bed at 12:00 lol.

NEW STUFF:-----------------------------------------------------

As you probably know I had been working on a veiw for my next digi paint based around a intergalatic bar on a space cruiser....oh yeah . For the first time I have recorded my entire processes of painting and I will be uploading it on youtube as soon as the painting's done It's is in two parts because there was so much work to do on it. I am a amateur I can't speedpaint like most artists do thats why it takes me so long.

WARNING :- The painting tutourial focuses mainly on rendering very small details, which means a lot of up close zooming. So if you don't want to see that I will save you the trouble now and say - 'don't watch it'

The painting should be done by thursday, I'll keep ya posted

Havn't slept for 4 days now... It might not sound like a lot but it's painful.

I can't keep my eyes shut yet I can't keep them open at the same time, it's doing my head in! I see the sun rise at six yet I am exhausted, I can't seem to put my finger on it. It might be stress, but I don't feel stressed at all weird.

Anyway....

It would be cool to see some imaginative costume designs, aliens and future concepts. I've got a uni project where I need to submit 12 pages of sketchwork I have produced throughout the year. However I don't have much to show for it, In the respect that I know I could do better. So I decided to start drawing 12 new ones instead. I wanted to ask you guys if your could help me come up with some new interesting/detailed/thought provoking ideas to draw. The brief outlines I must have:

People
Places
Objects
Copies, concepts or designs related to a personal interest. (can be fanart)

Just an edit on this weeks journal to let you know how grateful I am of the help I have had over the past couple of weeks. I have been checking out lots of different styles and skills to learn and experiment with and I am pleased to say how much it has benifited me in my newest peice... 'THE SNAKEMEN' which I will be uploading soon. Cheers to third Life syndrome for the great Title. I is probably one of my best efforts I have made so far in digital painting and I just cait wait to share it with everybody to see what you guys think.

One again thanks to all the artists who had there work featured, especially this ice landscape week which has really helped me get some ideas for my current paintings background.

I'll keep the features up until saturday but until then I would love to here some ideas of what we could see next...

This week I was thinking of having a collection of:

ICE LANDSCAPES.

... whether they be fantasy or science fiction.

This time I was wanting to have some input from the artists themselves. I was wondering if you could..

1) Tell us what it is.

2) Tell us how you did it.

3) What you like and don't like.

4) What feedback you would like to have on your artwork.

Hopefully from this we can all get a few tips on how to improve our artwork next time around. Same priciple as before 600pixel jepg link to your home page and artwork.

Hello my name is Dusty Crosley aka: "xenomorph-designs" here on Deviant Art. I am an aspiring digital artist and have been a memeber here on DA since June 2007. The "New London" piece that is featured here is directly inspired by the great matte painter Dylan Cole. I basically started the
composition by looking at a few of Dylan's pieces to get an idea for that "hyper-real" sci-fi architecture and just took it from there and put my own spin on it. Most of the composition was done with a custom square brush that I made myself and a few other
custom brushes I have downloaded here on DA along with a few stock Photoshop brushes. The entire piece was rendered totally in
Photoshop CS3 on top of a perspective grid using the line tool. I personally do not believe in using 3d to render lighting and
perspective, because I feel that learning those things on your own give you a much better grasp on how to use them and I feel that I have a long way to go myself on getting lighting and perspective nailed down!

I am truely humbled that a great artist like Carl thought enough of my work to feature it in his journal and a million thanks go out to him. It just inspires me to work even harder!

I was looking around browsing one day, and I found that alot of journals read and look alot more interesting. I thought I would give mine a go with a new look and try and jazz it up a bit.

Heres some stuff about me, projects,commisions, help and what not . Hopefully its a bit more interesting than before lol. OH YEAH! For some reason whenever I paste an image in here it makes the text below it a link sorry about that, I have no idea why?

Everything is now sorted. I am now situated in teeside house in middlesbrough ready to start university on monday. I should be submitting alot quicker than usual as I'll be putting on all of my work from my course for some feeback from you guys.

My laptop hardrive failed and I got a new one reinstalled. I now have no data all of my psd files have been lost, I now have only high res jpegs of all my paintings. I'm not very happy

I have also lost the abiity to operate photoshop on my computer as now I have windows vista operating system. I don't know if this will work and I need advice on a safe way to operate photoshop cs1 or cs2 on my new system ( because I can't afford to pay for cs3 as a student its just too much )... can anyone help?

Please anyone I am sure that you have been in my situation before where you have lost everything and it can be very frustrating. Please, any help whatsoever would be most appreciated, a link or email of infomation could really help me get started again on my artwork. All my paintings that where in production have been lost. Over 15 hours of work spread over three images as you can imagine I was very angry.

I have set myself a task while I am on my summer break to do a painting every week from now on. I read you only really start to improve and home in on your style after you do 50 paintings. I read this in the lastest edition of Imagine FX (Issue 20), there are 100 tips from 23 digital painters from across the globe. This was a fantastic and inspriational read, well worth I buy if you are dedicated enough. Featuring spyrotechnik (Martin Bland) below in my watch list who comments quite a few inspirational words.

I be updating every new painting in the process as it happens. If you would like to check out a sneak peak at the most recent project take a look at my 'desktop screenshot'. It shows the very early stages of a peice where sometimes I don't even know what it will end up like!
