I got tagged by *LIFEisMUSIC.

The rules:
1. post these rules
2. each person tagged must post 8 random facts about themselves
3. tags should write a journal of these facts
4. at the end post 8 more bloggers are tagged and named
5. go to their page and leave a comment telling them they're tagged

1. Music means everything to me. If I have my music with me, I feel home very fast.
2. My band is also a very important thing in my life. It's my ideal way of combining music and learning
3. If I don't play music, I dance to it. Salsa is my favorite kind, I'm taking my third semester of lessons.
4. I have a weakness for design books and magazines. It really difficult to not buy anything when I see some of them
5. I still can't drive a car, don't know why...
6. Photography is my best way of communicating with the world. You can explain so much by one picture, the power is immense.
7. If I had the time and money, my first thing I would buy is a horse.
8. I hate bad food...

Now I tag:

I'm finally 19, not that it's so different from being 18

The real party is probably next week, because this week I got to much work for my portfolio. It has to be finished this monday, and they informed us 2 weeks ago. If you then know that the portfolio will count around 100 pages, you get the idea
I'll probably put some designs in my scraps or perhaps in my gallery, so you can see how it looks.

Anyway, hope you guys have a nice holiday. Here in Belgium, today is the most pathetic day in the year, but for me, the best day

I'm off to work on my portfolio!

I've been surfing a lot lately, in search of cool brands and design companies. Just to get a bit of inspiration, and because it interests me.
That way a found a few very cool sites like [link] , an amazing flash-site. I also found a great essay about the difference between a designer and an artist: [link] . Next up, I found an online magazine [link] . They have an amazing cool design, an they feature a few very cool photographers.
But the best thing I found, were design companies that are using art to support certain well-fair companies. You've probably heard about the Million Dollar Homepage [link] . Well, 6 people came up with the idea to do the same thing for charity, and this is the result: [link] . Another similar project is The Bridge: [link] . This one is sponsored by big companies like Adobe and Quicksilver who will donate money to charity for each mile added. Everyone can add a mile with their own piece of art.
I think it's becoming much more of a trend. Thanks to the internet, small artist can help well-fair companies by supporting projects like this, and they also get notified. A few years ago, design-companies were located in big cities, in the center of it all. Today, you can pretty much be everywhere. Projects like those last 2 are a beautiful example of the advantages that that brings us.
Hope you like it, and if your fingers tingle to make a piece of art for these projects: don't hesitate. It's good for you, for the world and for your karma.

I finally found the time to put my favorite pictures on my deviant.

I few years ago, I participated in a contest called 'De Kunstbende'. You could participate in different categories like music, dance, film, ... I off-course took the category Photography.
I had this idea of a portrait for a very long time in my head. I wanted to make a portrait about a guy who had had a lot of problems. Somebody who lost his job, lost his wife, ... I wanted to make the portrait at a location that symbolized his sorrow and his anger. I had al the pictures in my mind before I took them, I had it all figured out.
I found my model quit fast, but the car and the location not. I was searching for a really old car, something from the 70's. Big, with a lot of charm. And then suddenly, such a car stood right in front of my house. Out of nowhere... I put a little letter behind the windscreen wiper where I asked the owner if I could use it for my portrait, and if so he or she would call me.
A week later and old lady called me to say that I could use the car. She asked me where I wanted to take the pictures. I said I didn't find the appropriate location yet, and explained to her how it should look like. She lived in Doel, and she said that that location was the thing I was searching for.
Now, you have to know some details about Doel. Doel is a small village right next to a big power plant. A few years ago, they announced that Doel was going to disappear because the power plant, and the harbor right next to it, wanted to expand, and Doel stood in the way. A lot of people didn't want to leave, and protested (even today) so that Doel would live on. But, in spite of the protest, Doel became an empty village. A ghost-town...
The year I took the pictures, was I think 3 years after the announcement, and 3 years before the village had to be completely empty.
So I went to Doel, and she was right. She owned I thing 3 houses in Doel, and I took the pictures right next to the house were she lived. The location was exactly what I was looking for, deserted cold, lonely... My model was a pleasure to work with, and the car fitted perfectly, so I was really glad with the pictures.
After the shoot, we went to a bar (the only one in Doel) for a drink. The woman told me about how Doel was at the moment, and how sad she was. It was really interesting, and she was really happy that her car and her village was used by me.
And indeed, Doel was and still is a real ghost-town. You see nobody on the streets, no cars, no people, just empty. All windows were closed, all curtains were closed... It was really creepy... I'll never forget it...

At the end, I didn't won the competition. But that's not important.
I hope you like my portraits. Personally, it's my favorite work

In the morning, a guy bought a gun for hunting... Later on that day, he went to the city. It was a sunny day. People were enjoying the sun, students were driving with their bicycles through the small streets, little kids were playing with the water of the fountain.
The guy walked through one of those streets. He saw a girl. He took is gun, and shot here. He walked on, turned into another street. He saw a another girl about 20 years old, with a baby. He shot both. When he turned around, he saw two guys, looking at him, full of disbelief. He aimed with his gun, but they managed to escape. Then he heard the voice of a policeman: "Please put your gun down on the ground!". He didn't move. "Please put your gun down on the ground!". He didn't saw the policeman. "Please... put your gun down on the ground!". He turned around, fast... The policeman shot him, in the middle of his stomach. He lost consciencennes....

It looks like a scene from a movie. Or a thriller... But this is exactly what happened today in Antwerp, the city where I live. The guy was a racist, he had connections with skinheads. The first girl he shot, was from turkish origin, she's in a hospital, but luckily not in critical condition. The second girl was black. The baby was only 2 years old, and white... They both died immediately...
The witnesses didn't saw any cause of why the guy started shooting.
I don't know what to say... When I heard the news, I cried. Every weekend, I walk through the streets where this happened. My best friend, who studies in Antwerp, drove with her bike through those streets, 5 minutes before the guy came around.
I have no words, only questions...

I just told my parents that I want to study photography next year, which means that I quit informatics in Ghent.
My mother doesn't talk to me anymore, and my dad doesn't believe me...

I've studied informatics for 1 year in Ghent. My parents paid my university costs and my studio where I live during the week. For the passed few months, I came to realize that informatics is really not my thing: far to much mathematics and practically no creativity. So it is entirely not what I want to do for the next 3 years. I've searched for somethings else, thought about what my hobbies are, what my interests are, and they all lead to photography. And if I see what I'm going to learn, I can't wait to start...

But apparently my parents don't seem to understand that... They think there is no future in photography. They think I can do better... Why do people always think that when you study at a university, you're smart, and when you study at a high school, you're stupid. It's so misunderstood I understand that my parents are worried but they both studied photography themselves. I just don't get it.

I thought I did something good by telling them, but apparently it came out the complete opposite...

Yesterday I had rehearsal with my band. At the end it wasn't really a rehearsal, more a jam-session. Drum, bass, guitar, sax and a bit of djembé playing some nice funky-tunes.
We ended the rehearsal at 23.00, but the evening just started. We went to a really small jazzcafé, right around the corner. There was also a jamsession in that café. Musicians how wanted to jam, just had to go the band who was playing, ask if they could join, and just play with them. I nor anybody of my band dared to jam with those musicians because they were far too good. But we listened. And it really was amazing. Once again I was stunned by the power that jazzmusic has on me.
I play the bass and drum myself, and the bassplayer last night was a great inspiration for me. He played a fretless bass, and you could tell that he was a leader in the band. He always gave the signs, and lead the melody. His solos were magnificant, subtile, light, smooth... Like it has to be
The drummer was, of course, waaaay better than me. If I go to a jazzconcert, I always come to the conclusion that jazzdrumming is much to difficult for me, and that it would take me years to get that good. But yesterday evening gave me a new perspective. Suddenly there was this small guy, I think he was 16. He asked the drummer if they could switch. So he sat down behind the drums, and you had to see the faces of the other musicians: "O no, a little kid, this is gonna be bad". The bassplayer was telling him what to do during the song. And than they began: the boy was amazing. He played as good as an average jazzdrummer, but sometimes he would just put a hip-hop-rithme in the song. He did that during one of the solos of the bassplayer. He was really amazing. So now I know: you don't have to be old to be a good jazzdrummer
Ok perhaps this is al a bit boring, but what I wanna say. If you wanna listen to jazz, you have to learn it. And the best way to do that, is to go to jamsessions. Yesterday-evening I saw 5 set-ups, everytime with different instruments like: bass, drum, piano, tenor-say, bariton-sax, alt-sax, trumpet, guitar and vocals. You get a taste of al the instruments, so it's ideal for people who want to meet this kind of music. And believe me: if you love music, it worth learning jazz!

Sorry I don't have any pictures. We probably go back next week, so then I'll take my camera with me, and delivere you some pictures
