I finally saw Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. I am hard pressed to find a worse movie. It was disappointing on oh so many levels. Badly scripted, badly acted, badly executed, and above all badly directed.
Why was so much screen time devoted to such annoying characters?
Why add all these extra characters if you are not going to do anything with them?
Why couldn't they write a script that made sense?
Why was fricking Optimus Prime given bad guy lines?

Michael Bay has the directing mentality of a horny 15yr old boy. It's all big explosions, violence, hawt chicks and crude jokes. It didn't achieve anything! I think he actually hates movies. That is he only explanation I can come up with that makes sense.
Megatron was such a badass in the first one, why is he such a wimp in the second?
Since when does Megatron work for ANYONE?!
In the movie Optimus fights with all the homocidal brutality of Jason Voorhees! He rips another transformer's face in half with meathooks! What... the... fuck?! It is fucking OPTIMUS PRIME!! He's supposed to be the best and most honourable of the autobots, and he's taking names like a slasher movie killer!

After discussing things with my wife, who also watched this with me, I have come to grudgingly admit that the movie Twilight was actually better than Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, simply because it was at least internally consistent within it's own setting. But don't start judging me, I'm not saying Twilight was good by any stretch of the imagination, rather look at it in this way; it is better in the same way as eating horse shit is better than eating dog shit because at least horse shit is full of fibre.

On the plus side, we watched the new Star Trek movie after T:RotF to cleanse ourselves, and it was awesome. I'm not a star trek fan myself, but I thoroughly enjoyed this movie.

I still weep for Transformers though. Damn you Michael Bay. You should be ashamed.

I should have fleshed out more of a story than just doing the battle. Stupid me, I thought the battle was the crucial part of the whole thing, but I missed out the importance of the story. I guess that's why I lost. Plus I misjudged the tone of the story.
I'm not torn up about it though. Keeping positive. It does mean now I don't have a hefty contest on my artistic schedule anymore, so I am free to do other things. Like my Gemlins! Only two more starters to go! plus changes abound in the original list, must have changed at least 5 or 6 of my original ideas, and I think they are better for it.
Those RPG character pics are coming along, slowly, but I will focus more when I can.

I like archers. My first long term Earthdawn character was an archer, so I have a fondness for bow and arrow users. However, something interesting occurred to me when I typed "archer" into a search on DA. It seems that in order to use a bow and arrow correctly, you cannot wear many clothes. This seems more exaggerated if you are female. Interesting. I wonder what the historical basis for this is

Done two starter monsters of each elemental type for my Pokemon-like BESM game. That leaves only number three for the starer groups. Let me give you the run down, as some people have been blown over by the number of starters. Unlike pokemon, where you get a choice of 3 starters, fire, water and grass, here a trainer has to train at one of the dijos for monster trainers. Each dojo specialises in an elemental type, much like the gyms in pokemon, and upon graduation to fully fledged trainer-hood the trainer chooses one of the three offered monsters of that dojo's chosen type.
Now if one has the good fortune to receive their training at the Monster Trainer's Academy (the MTA), then they are able to choose from the entire range of starters, not just one type. Everyone else is limited to the type of their own dojo. Make sense? Good.

So getting into "pull your finger out" territory now, motivation is dying down, and I need to do something to perk it up again. Got a bunch of stuff I need to finish.

Have been watching a bunch of movies over the last week, and thought I'd offer my opinions.

I know will probably slap me for this, but I saw Twilight of my own free will. This was without a doubt one of the most painful movie experiences I have ever had. The script was woeful, the plot was dull (NOTHING happened, even when something happened nothing happened), and the female lead was horrible! She was just so completely unlikeable! Even moreso given the fact that the movie pout forward the idea that she was the most wonderful being on the planet, and yet she didn't do anything to merit this idea. We had to believe that she was wonderful because the movie said so. Sorry but my suspension of disbelief doesn't stretch that far. I have never laughed so hard at a movie, yet felt so horrible afterwards. I am still angry about it, and I saw it about a week ago! I had to watch 30 Days of Night straight after it to scour the stink out of my brain.

Now, 30 Days of Night, GREAT vampire movie. Sadistic sharklike vampires, being what vamps should be: Monsters. They were much more interesting as characters than the Cullen family too, and they were just rampaging beasts! Great movie, well written, believable characters and it is internally consistent. Thumbs up!

The Watchmen. Bought it yesterday and watched it last night. Fantastic opening, covering the passage of time and the development of the setting. Great piece of cinematography. Liked it as a movie, and liked the ways it differed from the comic. In some ways I actually prefer the final half hour over the climax of the comic, especially when it comes to Rorscharch. Man that guy is my hero. And I loved how much of a dork Drieberg was. I've got another favourite in my collection.

Finally, Kung Fu Panda. I thought this was a riot. I love that style of wacky over the top kung fu, and I really liked the cast of characters. The script was well written, snappy dialogue without it being trite or tacky (like the later Shreck movies got), and they paid homage to all the great martial arts cliches without being too stereotyped. I thought it an overall good effort, and I really want to buy this one for myself.

Any movies you think I should see, please let me know.

Flicking through tv channels last night, I saw that "Date Movie" was on. Now, I had never seen it, but had heard that it was bad. I foolishly wondered to myself "Is it really as bad as people say it is?" So I watched some.

The answer is no.IT WAS WORSE!
Never in my life have I seen such awful, bowel wrenching tripe! Nothing but non-sequiter "gags", if you can call them that, of a vulgar or bone-chillingly moronic nature that can barely be described as funny. But the worst was all the pop culture references. I like a good movie reference as much as the next person, but here thay flew at you at 100 miles an hour, where they impacted, fell flat and were beaten to death by the movie itself. They went for a multitude of badly executed movie jokes, cramming as many into each scene as they could, rather than attempting to write an actual script. Parody done well is a very effective comedic technique, but this was not. If you haven't seen this movie, do not watch it! Save yourself! Don't even look at the cover in the video store! If anyone suggests watching it, beat them around the head with a week old tuna!

Now that is out of my system, my art has slowed a bit due to one thing or another, but I will endeavour to get some done.

Also, 6 days to my birthday!
I didn't get there people. Oh for shame.

I tried, i most truly did. I tried to start a 4th edition game, but when I got to making the encounters I just became so bored and disillusioned with the game that I couldn't go on.

Issues

1: It is too "video game"- D&D 4th edition is just too stat focused fro me to get any sense of realism from the game. You have to keep track of all these abilities, check their availability in an encounter, check for stacking with other factors such as friends' abilities and micromanage out the wazoo! I'd prefer to do something like that on the computer where the machine does the bookkeeping for me.

2: Realism- There isn't any. I came across a major hurdle when the DMG said that you should feel free to throw fantastic elements into mundane encounters, since this is fantasy it does not have to be realistic. What about internally consistent. Fighting hobgoblins on a floating island covered by glowing tentacles? Huh? I know you don't have to do it like that but the fact that they encourage it is disappointing to me.

3: Every character is a demon in combat- Every last one of them holds their own in combat. They don't need any other characters. It is impossible to create a character who is not a combatant. A friend of mine in an old 3rd edition game made a halfling "locksmith" who avoided combat at all costs. On the final battle in one adventure when faced by a white dragon, she put on her ring of spider climbing, climbed over the cliff and hid in a hole in the cliff face. Not a great warrior, but a very entertaining character. I do not like the fact that all characters are geared towards causing as much damage as possible. It is unrealistic and extremely limiting.

4: Skills- or the lack of. For me skills are one of the most important parts of the game, defining who a character is and what they are capable of. In 4th ed, they are a footnote, detracting from "the glorious spectacle of combat".

5: There is no down side to any character creation choices- None of the classes or races suck at anything. How is that a bad thing? It is unrealistic for a start. We all make choices in life which mean we are rubbish at some things. I for one am rubbish at speaking to women. If my wife hadn't asked me out, I would probably still be a very sad and lonely individual. To have characters who are not bad at anything just doesn't feel right. Negatives are another thing that helps us to define their character, but I don't think rolepaying was high on WOTC's list.

6: Encounter Building- In order to make the encounters interesting in this game, if you are building them according to the rules set out in the books, you need to add incongruous or unrealistic elements to them, otherwise you end up fighting the same battle over and over again. Some people may like this, and it helps those who were suckered by WOTC and have a random assortment of unrelated miniatures (major chip on my shoulder about the minis, but this is not the place), but I don't want to make my battle against goblin raiders take place on moving platforms over a lake of acid. Who does that? Honestly? The very idea is ridiculous.

While 4th ed is a great system for what it is, and it did give me some great ideas, I just isn't versatile for what I wanted to do. It lacked that level of believability that I need in order to suspend disbelief and immerse myself in the world. It is pulp fantasy of the most extreme variety, fine for one or two games where you don't need to think too hard about it, but I feel it lacks enough "soul" as it were to make a lasting campaign.

I did try. I really did try to give it a fair go and play it for what it is, but I just couldn't bring myself to do it. I am disappointed with D&D as it stands now, and feel that it could have been done better. I will not be trying again, but instead I will be working on RPGs that I can immerse myself in, as well as my own system.

I have come to a decision lately. I can rail as much as I want about wizards of the coast and their motivations behind changing D&D so much for 4th edition, but I cannot judge it as a role playing game until I actually bite the bullet and give it a real go. So I am going to run a 4th ed. game for my friends, and push just how well it functions as an rpg. Only then will I be able to truly come to a decision about it.

After all, most rpgs are simply a combat system with extra rule embellishments. The role playing element comes from the people playing.

Now don't jump on me straight away for being an idiot, just hear out my question.

Which do you think would be more popular: Pokemon or Boobs?

Now until recently i would have definitely been of the mind that boobs were a quick and easy way of getting views on your gallery page. However, consider these:

Orc Pinup: [link]

Farfetche'd Cool contest entry 3: [link]

Now the first pic is currently my most popular picture. It was posted almost two years ago, is slowly approaching 1000 views, and was my most favourited picture as well (until beaten by my first Farfetch'd entry [link]).

The second pic has been up for a week, and yet in those seven days has accumulated 725 page views and is rapidly gaining on my poor orc girl!

Now this has shaken my world view, particularly on what appeals to the teeming masses. And if I wish to get views quickly, it seems I must choose pokemon pics over half naked women. For those of you about to suggest half naked pokemon women; no, I don't think I am ready to cross that line.

I'm not saying that this trend will affect what I end up posting, I just though it was a curious point that deserved addressing.

P.S: need to ink that illithid abc pic.
Well, I have now seen and read parts of the new 4th ed D&D, and I believe I can safely say that it is everything I though it would be, and less.
First of all let me say that I have not played it yet, and from what I see, it is probably a very fun game in its own right, and I will enjoy it immensly. But it IS NOT a role playing game. Gone are any remnants of character beyond combat. Everything is focused on fighting, even rogues are combat based for crying out loud. Non combat encounters come down to "skill challenges", which do not actually require any real roleplaying effort, but instead only need a requisite number of skill roll successes.
Skill lists have been reduced to 3/4 its previous size, feats, which were the best thing introduced in the last game, are relegated to largely insignificant boosts. All characters must follow a particular path of their class, there being no real opportunity to make your character unique (eg: all fighters are heavily armoured tanks, no bowmen or swashbucklers or barehand brawlers, all clerics are martial ones, rogues are more assassins), all races are powerful, with NO NEGATIVE TRAITS, monsters are all evil, or at least aggressive (dryads have been changed from shy, reclusive tree spirits to tree monsters that attack all intruders), there is a distinct influence from WoW, which is disappointing, the only non combat spells are either movement or healing (no more knock!), and the list goes on.

I am disappointed because this is promoted as a role playing game, and it is not. At best it is an adventure board game (as it promotes the use of their miniatures and floorplans), and at worst it is a pale facsimile of Diablo II. Interestingly, that is what we are going to use it for. My friend is nutting out a Diablo III campaign plan that we are going to fight through. Onward to Kurast!

They don't make it easy to do anything recreational for yourself. But I do love 'em to pieces, so it is a difficulty that is easy to bear.

Main problem is this: Why am I finding it so difficult to draw pictures of my own creations? It seems like I am just never happy with the final product, especially stuff from the RPG I have been making. I finish a picture, look at it and think "What a load of garbage". Why can't I be happy with them. Maybe I just need to try harder, because I do think I start to get lazy with them about half way through.

Getting money! Actually teaching!

Its good to have all the agony I have been through mean something in the end.

As for art, I am trying. Having a baby again has stymied my drawing somewhat. I am reluctant to start anything because I just KNOW that once I get into a groove with drawing, I'll have to stop and do something for the baby. It's like the know when you will be the most disrupted, and choose that moment to throw a fit, or soil themselves.
I love her like nothing else, but she doesn't really give me time to draw that much.
It was the same with my son. Before he was born, I had been making Ent miniatures for the Lord of th Rings miniatures game, being able to make one a night on average, then he was born while I was making the last one, and it took me three and a half months before I finished it!

Anyhoo, I am wanting to draw up some pokemon type monsters that I came up with for Big Eyes, Small Mouth. I'll be posting them once I start drawing again. I really should finish drawing all those pin ups I started too.

Some new pics, four in total. Been a while since I've put new pics on, but my two newer pin ups are on, Orc and Dwarf, my new Black Mage Mummy Girl pic, and a humourous Cloud and Tifa picture too.

On to the blind burning rage.

As I have said before, I have been making puppets for a theatre show that goes on professionally in june, and am behind schedule in the construction. The reason for this is simple, I have had to rely on another member of the theatre company, and he has proved time and time again that he DOES NOT KNOW WHAT HE IS DOING!!!!!
I am behind because I am constantly repairing his mistakes. But can you tell him he has done something wrong? Nooooooo! He doesnt bloody listen, he cant follow instructions, even when you are hovering nearby to make sure he follows instructions, he still makes mistakes, he doesnt think (with the amount of anatomy pictures and books he references, you'd think he knew how a frigging arm is supposed to look!), he is always in a hurry, he wastes time and materials, and on top of all that, he still thinks he is really good at what he does!

He need tattooed across his forehead "Thou art not as good as thou thinkest thou art!"

He thinks he is such a good puppet maker, and artistically he has some talent, but he has no "understanding", meaning that he does not understand why we put the puppets together the way we do or why we use certain materials. He is always going on about his pet projects, scripts which he believes will rocket him to stardom, when in actual fact they are formulaic, infantile, lacking in drama, tension or plot, have poor or stolen humour, characters that are painfully two dimensional (or in the case of females, one dimensional), and yet, as before, you can't tell him this because he has convinced himself that they are brilliant and any criticism means you are picking on him personally.

It has taken me years of hard work to get the recognition I know have, and he thinks that with his half arsed attempts he is entitled to the same level of recognition as me? Jealousy is an ugly thing, and even worse when you wont admit to it.
I hate sounding arrogant, but he is not as good as me, he will never be as good as me, and unless he has drastic corrective brain surgery, he wont even become passably competent at what I do.

He needs to grow up and get over himself. This is pathetic behaviour for a man who is approaching his forties.

Grumble grumble growl (puff puff puff)

Pent up much?

Finally, I got my teaching approval!

Took bloody long enough.

Anyway, I'm a father again, my new little girl is called Winter.

As for art, I've been working on a range of pictures:
- An Orc pinup which just needs to be scanned
- New Dwarf pinup is coming along
- I've got a nice red riding hood pic in the works
- character drawings for the Enchanted Forest puppet shows I am doing.

plus I've got a whole bunch of ideas that I want to get onto paper before I forget them.
I especially like this series of hero pics about four people from different walks of life who are destined to master control over each of the four elements. I really need to start drawing those.

I will post these pics as soon as I can. Most of my time is spent in rehearsals or building puppets at the moment.
I also want to post photos of all the puppets I have been making. Speak up if you would like to see them.

Oh how I wish I was able to teach!

You see here in Oz, in order to teach in New South Wales state schools, you need approval from the NSW Department of Education and Training (DET), in addition to your teaching qualifications. Now, as with any beaurocratic body, there can be delays. I, however have been waiting five months for my approval!!!

They wanted me to take a health exam to determine if my arthritis would impede my ability to teach (yeah, like difficulty walking would prevent me from sitting and talking!). I attended this exam, and everything was good. They said they would send it off to the DET and everything would be sorted out within a week. Three weeks later I am STILL waiting.
The DET has not even received the report, because the health organization has not bothered to send it! They say they need more employment info from the DET about what job I am going to do, even though they do these reports ALL THE TIME!!! They should know that it is for teaching. The DET said they would chase it up and get back to me as soon as possible. That was three days ago. Last time I called the DET, the woman said that when she called HealthQuest (the organization doing the report) the receptionist was just going down the hall to see the examining doctor about it and get right back to them. This was TWO DAYS AGO! Where is this hall reach to? Fricking Belgium?!?

If that wasn't enough, I am being force by the government to attend Job Seeker Training, where I am being forced to endure pointless busy work so that the job placement organization can justify to the government that they are "making a difference to the workforce". I have to apply for any job that I can do. I'm sorry, but if I wanted to stack shelves in supermarkets, or telemarket, i wouldn't have bloody put myself through the agony of the university education diploma in the first place. I want to teach in high schools DAMNIT!!!!!

Well, today I started drawing again (during my job seeker training by the way), and they're coming up nicely. I'll post them up when I have the chance. As for my pin ups, they're on a bit of a hiatus at the moment. I really need time to work on them, and with this stupid training, my wife about to give birth to our second child any day now, and finishing unpacking into our nw house, I just don't have the time.

Life never lets up, does it?

Anyway, big shout out to *lvl9Drow , go see his gallery, it is sooo cool.

Get back to you with more news later, just had to vent my spleen today.

The Arrogance of Youth

There has been a significant jump in the proficiency of my art. The only thing I can attribute this to is maturity.

Let me explain; when I was younger, I had certain opinions about how to draw. I never used framework or planning, rough body shapes and so on when drawing. I instead just drew my pictures in one go. I was of the opinion that I should be able to draw what I wanted first time, and i didn't want to waste time with any frames or sketches. I also used to draw very heavily with my pencils, so rubbing out lines would only leave smudges, or they would not disappear.

This youthful arrogance of wanting to get it right straight off the bat led to huge errors. The most prevalent of which being out of proportion bodies. The example that springs to mind is a cleric I drew once, and I was really proud of it, but when I showed it to my father, he pointed out that it was built like an orangutan! Stumpy leg syndrome was something I suffered from for a long time.

As I have matured, I have seen the wisdom of drawing a framework (and recently drawing a simple stick figure to get the basic pose down), and I am finally beginning to feel happy with alot of my drawings.

*sigh* If only I'd had the foresight to try these things ten years ago, instead of being the stubborn and opinionated punk kid I was.
