Who Am I?

I'm a writer.

This isn't really obvious if you follow me on deviantArt, because I post very little of my writing here. I don't like the story format here - there's no room to put things like stories and characters and pairings where people can read them before reading the story except if I include it directly in the story file.

Most of my writing can be found on my Fanfiction.Net account. All of my posted writing can be found on my Livejournal.

What I do over here is post my dabblings in visual art. I'm not much of a visual artist, and I've become even less of one ever since my other laptop broke and most of my 3D stuff got shelved in backups until I get a better computer.

So I write. I dabble in visual art.

I try to support the community, because the community is one of the most interesting things about deviantArt. (I try to support my communities on Livejournal, too.) I suspect I have mixed success there, but what I do makes me happy.

What is My Artistic Passion?

Stories. People. Pain. Sex. Love. The way love hurts. The way being alone hurts. The way doing what's right hurts. The way doing what's wrong feels good and you don't care who it hurts. Sacrifice. The price of what's right. Politics. Trade. Anger. Passion.

Duende.

Why Did You Get into Art?

I don't know. I remember writing from a very young age, but I didn't get serious about it until about ten years ago. Since then, it's been a journey.

I keep trying my hand at visual art because I want to make lovely things and get mental images out of my head without having to pay someone. But I never try very hard. It just isn't that huge a deal for me.

I know I got into 3D work because of a contest on deviantArt. I'd like to get back to it, but there's a number of pieces I want to render that are slow and painful to do on my current computer. So I'm trying to find work and scrape together money to pay off my bills and save for a better graphics computer.

How Do I Inspire Myself?

By reading. By listening to music. By taking walks. By letting my mind wander.

In the back of my mind, I put together everything I take in. I let it percolate, I let it mix, I let it change. Then it comes back out on its own as mental images or characters or worlds or plots.

The hard part is getting it to yield three of those four rather than just one or two.

Where Would I Like To See Myself in Five Years?

I've got a seven-page Long Feng vs. weeping angels script I'd like to turn into an actual comic sometime. Unfortunately, I have the art skills of a dead rock. So I'm trying to put together the data to plan for getting it done sometime after I have an income again.

Negaduck actually has a lot of art on her own site that is definitely worth seeing too.

- I've watched one episode of He-Man and the Masters of the Universe in my life, and that was from the newish series. However, I've followed Negaduck since ReBoot fandom, and I know she's an enjoyable read. So when she started writing He-Man fanfiction, I started reading. These are some Trollan characters (people somewhat like Orko) from a story she hasn't completed yet. Very awesome designs.

- Title: It's the Great Pumpkin King, Charlie Brown!

Well worth reading. ^_^

- Darkwing Duck, magic, and demons. Hell to the yes.

I am saddened the sketch of Cannonball getting roughed up by Hook isn't on dA.

- Action shots are pleasing unto me. Especially when you can tell what's going on. Throwing in some lightning powers, and I am a very happy camper.

- The lighting. *licks* Sure, the fire highlighting isn't that great, but I love the way most of Onslaught's back is in shadows, and he's looking over his shoulder at us.

- Character sketch for a Junkion. Given how much I love Junkions, it's no surprised I picked Dai-Janku. (I need college to stop killing me so I have the energy to play my Junkion.)

- A Beast Wars redesign of Dirge. I like how it works the beast-design to fit the jet-design Dirge has. The coloring really pleases me for some reason.

- Title: Will O' The Wisp

I love this story like burning. Great Red Alert mystery.

- I like pictures that showcase an artist pushing their abilities. Sometimes they don't always work as art pieces, but this one definitely does.

As a personal aside, I'm not currently producing art of my own. I am in my last semester at university and have been using someone else's laptop since my own died a year ago. I have backups of all my 3D models and textures, but digging them out to do anything with is a pain. So I likely won't be producing anything big until I get a new desktop computer built.

With writing, even if I don't comment, I at least have a good idea of what to say and what not to say. I don't comment enough, but I've got enough of an understanding of the art to be able to offer useful feedback, as well as to find the words to explain why certain lines, concepts, and so on work for me and others don't.

With visual art, I have a much harder time. Usually the best I can manage is "I like that!", though I can sometimes wring out details like "I like the lighting you used" or "I like the colors you used".

I tend to view the Favorite function and the "I like that!" comment as interchangeable. I prefer to provide something a little more detailed, but I'm not sure what sort of comments would be useful or desired by visual artists.

So. What kind of comments do you prefer to receive on your artwork? Do you know of any good resources that talk about critique without tossing out bull like "criticism is always subjective"?

Which means, still no new 3D art from me for a while yet.

What am I working on? Well, I'm coloring a Mosaic piece for a friend. However, since I'm such a noob with digital coloring, it'll be ages before it's done to my satisfaction. Between that and the line-artist constantly e-mailing my friend about when it will be done, I went ahead and gave permission for my friend to submit it as B&W.

I'm also still writing quite a lot, though almost all of that is posted on my Livejournal rather than here. The only exception is Transformers fanfiction containing heterosexual themes, as I post those to the ~mech-meets-femme

To keep up my artistic interest, I'm going to do art features on this journal once a week. The theme will be of my choosing, and all images featured can also be found in my Favorites.

Additionally, I will only feature images with less than 100 favorites. Exceptions include very well done pieces with less than 110, and a very specific "I LOVE THIS" exception every feature.

However, I'm going to comment on a statement I saw recently about the new Favorites system.

Don't get me wrong, I think that Collections is a really awesome feature, but to me, and from what I've heard around from a lot of other people, a favourite without a comment means absolutely nothing.

The original poster then goes on to point out that the artist has no idea why someone might favorite their art without a comment from that poster. S/he suggests various reasons: liking the piece, wanting to 'bookmark' the piece so they can find it again, keeping track of emotes for easy use in the chatrooms, and attention-whoring.

If the piece isn't an emoticon, you can safely say the piece isn't being Favorited for ease of use on dAmn. On the other hand, if it is...

How is this a bad thing? Someone likes your emote enough to want to use it in a public space. Why perceive that any differently than "I like this piece"?

"They're Favoriting your piece so they can find it again when they need it". Now, maybe I'm showing a lack of imagination here, but if it's something you want to refer back to, presumably you both like it and find it useful. After all, why refer back to something you dislike?

So, again, why perceive anything differently than "I like this"?

The attention-whoring... I can understand how some people might think that works. I don't think it's a terribly effective method of attention-whoring, but this may be because it falls utterly flat against me. So there's a definite cultural difference there.

The original poster then goes on to complain about the lack of actual comments in proportion to favorites that most art pieces get. I hate to break it to them, but that's true no matter what kind of art a person produces. On Fanfiction.Net, I'm always getting more favorites than people leaving reviews. I bet if Livejournal had a Favorites function, more people would use that than leave comments on writing or art posts.

There's a huge tendency among certain kinds of writers to disdain feedback that isn't ultra-specific about what the reviewer liked/disliked. There's also the ones who throw temper fits if offered the slightest bits of criticism. I am willing to bet that this applies to other kinds of artists as well.

Given the two extremes in response to feedback, it's no surprise that Favorites are a preferred method. I'm certainly not going to leave critical feedback on a random person's story unless I feel they've done something absolutely horrible. Even then, I'll weigh it against just not saying anything and looking for something else to do.

On the flip side, the people I do feel comfortable with leaving honest feedback with are often people who don't need it from me.

While some people desire more comments, the current atmosphere of the Internet doesn't encourage people to leave comments. There is little reward for people who leave good feedback of the type the artist desires. There is quite a lot of potential for punishment if they leave feedback the artist does not desire.

Now I have backups of all my necessary files, but as I really loved that computer, I'm going to wait and see whether it's repairable or dead before I re-install those files on a different machine.

Though, my machine hasn't been down for the last (*checks her gallery*) five months since I last uploaded a piece. A lot of that was real-life stress and "zomg, this concept has been done a thousand times before! It is trite and overdone! I hate it, my precious! Fie on this file! Fie!". Or flailing at the complicated things I set up for myself.

Which reminds me, I should have a deer model in my collection someplace. Ought to see if I can do a render of Herne the Hunter from the Matrix: Degrees of Separation game I played for a while. (Because I love my creepy, dead elves aka Exiled programs from an iteration when Sidhe and such were part of the Matrix who just so happen to have wound up in a Recycling Bin that the program who is supposed to recycle things has turned into his personal kingdom instead of doing his job. So, yeah. Creepy dead elves. In the Matrix.)

Edit: I'm going to be posting a couple pieces of my fanfiction here so I can provide link-backs to the versions on the ~mech-meets-femme comm, so I have a better chance of seeing any comments or faves made on them. Since I did say, when the comm was being talked about prior to creation, that I'd post my het fanfiction pieces there, I figured it was about time I'd act on that.

Except for the Blitzwing/Catechism stuff. That stays on Livejournal and my Fanfiction.Net account, unless Catechism's creator wants me to post it to ~mech-meets-femme.

If you are attempting to claim that you are not an asshole, you did not go through someone's Photobucket account, you did not lie and tell someone you would take something down then turned around and renege when they actually did press you to take it down...

It helps your case if people don't have screen-captures of your comments saying that you did all of the above.

Just sayin'.

(Pro tip: If you want to claim you are not an art thief when you used someone else's work without permission, and then balked when they politely asked you to take it down, it helps if you don't accuse them of stealing for originally coloring the lineart without permission. Especially since they never intended their work for public display.)

Some of the user-run contests around here? Oh boy oh boy, are they ever badly done.

• First, and most importantly, you cannot claim that your contest is for "all kinds of art" and is "aimed at the digital/traditional artists of DA" if the very first rule of your contest is that participants must use photographic stock from your account.

This is a pretty big problem right from the beginning, as you're providing false advertising about who can participate in your contest. I mean, how exactly are traditional media artists supposed to use photographic stock? How are people who don't even do visual arts supposed to use that? What about the digital artists who use their computers to emulate traditional methods, such as people who do digital paintings?

• Don't get cute with your announcement News post describing the contest.

Do not bold everything. Do not italicize everything. Lay-off on the fancy font colors. Do not liberally scatter itty-bitty bullet point graphics around.

Keep it simple, neat, and readable. This is really a wonderful thing for your posts, as it makes it easier to spread your message.

• Spell correctly!

Humanizing Transformers is already something that goes around the fandom now and then in fics and art. Why not collect the art together and see if we can get a version of each of the different characters?

On the other hand, someone would have to run it, and I really don't think I should be adding yet another project to my list.
