Let it Snow!

Wow...I didn't think it would happen. Last summer, the temperature was consistently at a high of 110 degrees Fahrenheit. While the weather can be change quickly where I live, but usually never cold enough for snow. The amount of snow is very light though. There is enough for the roofs and lawn (that does not have tree branches above it) to look as if it's covered in powdered sugar, but not enough to make a snowman or even throw snowballs. This will be my 4th time seeing snow, so it's something special to me.

Edit: Awww....I can't make use of the Journal skin anywmore, so much for the free skin.

Out of Town

Currently,I have been out of town, visiting relatives. It was a last-minute decision, so I didn't get a chance to post in my journal. I currently have no access to a scanner. I'll post some sketches when I come home.

Last weekend, went with my relatives to a farm in Mississippi. They were growing blueberries over there. During certain times of the year, visitors can borrow a bucket and pick some blueberries. The blueberries were plump and sweeter in taste than what you usually get at grocery store in the city. There was plenty to pick, for some bushes yielded enough fruit to get 3 gallons. We picked blueberries for 2-3 hours had enough to fill 2 1/2 large paper bags (the kind you get from the grocery store). Obviously, it's way too much to eat right away, so most of it will be freezed.

Anyways, I hope you guys enjoyed your summer.

Rescued a Bird

Today I found a bird that got its head stuck between the gaps of the wooden fence at my home. How did it get there in the first place?...who knows. The bird was still alive, because it periodically flapped its wings and tried in vain to pull its head out. Apparently, it's been stuck there for a while since the fence was scratched up pretty good by its talons.

I didn't feel comfortable handling the bird (especially with my bare hands). I don't have much experience in handling animals. I neither wanted to injure the bird nor get beaked and clawed in retaliation. After trying a couple of ways to free the bird, a grabbed a shovel and lifted the bird's body until its neck was no longer between the fence. Surprisingly, the bird wasn't flailing around furiously as I was lifting.

The bird flew a short distance before landing on the ground. It hopped around awkwardly for a while before laying down. There was no need for further meddling because the bird eventually took off on its own.

Sorry I haven't been active in a while in both submitting art or even commenting like I used to. I used to draw every week day and persisted when things got tricky. Now I can sometimes go for week without drawing anything. I felt like I hit a plateau, yet I know there are many areas that I could work on.

I need to re-evaluate what I enjoy about art and why did continued for so long. What got you guys interested in art and what want to get out of it?

Uh...I don't really have one.

02. What made you choose this name?
N/A

03. Do you use PC or Mac?
PC

04. What programs do you use most often?
I haven't yet gone into digital art. I do use Photoshop to clean up and resize a scanned image, but that's about it.

05. Do you use mouse, or tablet?
I use the pencil (for drawing and writing) with my left hand, yet primarily use the mouse with my right. It's too awkward for me to draw with a mouse with either hand. I'll need to invest in a tablet if I want to do digital art.

06. What color or color combination's do you find yourself using most often?
Honestly, I don't practice with color like I should. When I do color, I tend to use complimentary colors to create shadows.

07. What part of a picture do you put most effort into?
Human figures and animals.

08. How long does it take you do draw a picture?
I take breaks between drawings, so it's hard to keep track of actual drawing time. It can take a 3 hours or more.

09. Do you keep your rough drafts?
I have a crapload of them and there are lots of drawings I don't finish.

10. What font do you use most often?
Times New Roman;.for writing papers for school and such. However, it's not my favorite.

11. When you scan your image, what DPI do you use?
Hmmm...I haven't paid much attention to that

12. Do you do anything else when you're drawing?
I try not to other things, I'm easily distracted as it is.

13. Approximately how many pictures do you draw in a month?
I used to draw a ton when I was younger. I probably have only 18 sketches per month, but I should do more.

14. What kind of paper do you draw your pictures on?
Printing paper and sketchbook paper.

15. What kind of paper do you use for rough sketches and drafts?
Printing paper and lined paper

16. How long does it take you to ink something?
I don't ink often, but it depends on the detail and size of the work.

17. Do you do comics, or fan comics?
It has been a long time since I attempted to do a comic.

Yes. Unfortunately, my inability to make good story keeps me from making comics.

Never.

At the top of my head;.Masashi Tanaka, Sir John Tenniel, and Charles Schulz

22. Do you like anime/manga? If so, what are your favorite series?
*looks at question #23* Uh...Anime and manga the same mediums as cartoons and comics... Oh well...For Lupin III, it depends because the series spans over 30 years in various media (the comics are quite different from the animated series). A lot of people may remember Gon for his appearance in Tekken 3; I love the manga for its richly detailed rendering.I need to get my hands on the rest of the Akira volumes.

23. Do you like cartoons/comics? If so, what are your favorite series?
Yep. I have fond memories of cartoons I grew up watching in the 90s; Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Animaniacs, Looney Toons, Duck Tales, Widget the World Watcher, etc. As for comics, Pearls Before Swine is pretty funny, despite the crude drawings. Peanuts always had a special place in my heart.

24. Any artists that you wish you could draw like?
I do admire the works of many artists. Howerver, I just want to get better on technical level, it doesn't have to look like anybody's work in particular.

25. Do you read a lot of books?
My short attention span makes that difficult ï

26. Did you ever buy a book to inspire or teach you to draw?
Yes, but I don't buy that many.

27. Any video games you enjoy?
Street Fighter, Tobal, Chrono Trigger, Victorious Boxers, Rystar, Katamari, Jak and Daxter and many others but I don't play video games as much as I used to.

Sly Cooper and Daxter

It's been two weeks since hurricane hit my city. I had to spend a good deal of time moving things into the house and clearing up the yard after the storm.

It was no vacation, but I was extremely fortunate. Some trees were ripped apart, but damage to the house itself was minimal. My family got much needed help from friends. Many people's homes lost power, and my home got it back earlier than most.

Sorry, I haven't been good about commenting or submitting works like I used to. However, things are beginning to settle down. I hope everything is okay with everybody.

During my fresh year of college, I learned anatomy and perspective to create more believable and dynamic poses. It was also the first time I recieved critique from a peer. All of the stuff I learned, was applied to this drawing.

Once upon a time, I wanted to make a comic or some type of storytelling medium and these were the some characters I created. Unfortunately, I don't know where to begin when writing a story. I have revisted old art before, so it may happen in the future.

I live in Texas.

2. how long have you been drawing (silly t ask, but I mean more toawrds how long have you been perfecting yourself and techinique)
It's not a silly question at all. I have been drawing since I was in pre-school. Somewhere in 5th grade, my mom showed me how to use bubble outlines for drawing. Otherwise, I didn't learn any real technique until junior year in high school. In freshman year in college, I met someone who gave me good critiques, and urged me to work on realistic anatomy. There is no such thing as perfect art and there is always something to learn throughout your life.

3. what particular music do you like?
I don't really have a fixed genre of music. You may think I'm a weirdo, but a good number of them come from film and video game soundtracks. Among my favorites include Joe Hisaishi, who composed music for a couple of Studio Ghibli films such as Laputa: Castle in the Sky and Princess Mononoke. [link] [link]

I the last thing I read is a trade and generic drug handbook. It's not fun to read, but I need to familiarize with trade and generic drugs as a pharmacy technician. I generally don't have the attention span for reading like I should (I'm more of a visual person), but there some books that I enjoyed reading. I want to finishing reading Through the Looking Glass by Lewis Carroll.

5. any particular things that inspier you?
I get my inspiration from a variety of sources. This can include films, things I read, people I talk to, looking at other people's artwork, etc.

I like surfing on the internet, playing video games...perhaps too much. I also enjoy spending spending time with the dog and riding my bike. I really like martial arts. I used to train inTae Kwon Do, but I left the dojang because of the practices that I soured on.

It's been a while since I posted a journal. Anyways, here are my goals so far.

Projects

I just got an email from my ma about my home town. About a week ago, at least 13 tornadoes touched down along the NM-TX border and one of them ripped through the middle of Clovis. It destroyed 400+ homes and businesses in Clovis alone. It ripped up 100 year old trees, tossed trailers through the bowling alley roof, ripped the roof off of the senior citizens housing, bent phone poles in half and sent air conditioning units from one of the junior high schools through the roofs of surrounding houses. It completely destroyed one of the grain silos I'd known all my life. A lot of people were injured in some way, head trauma and the like... 2 are in critical condition. 120-125 mph winds left a 3 mile long path through the center of my town. I'm so scared for people I grew up with and families I know still live there. I'm sad I can't be home to physically help in some way.

A Salvation Army truck on its way from El Paso to Clovis was looted. $1500 worth of supplies was stolen right out of the back of it and the thieves haven't been found yet.

I don't have a lot of free time on my hands right now but I want to start a fund raiser for Clovis. I don't expect to raise a lot of money but every little bit will help, y'know? Thanks to for the idea... I wanted to make a journal that would monitor my progress and it's about time I followed through. Below is a link to some sample of my artwork from each time period. The earliest pieces have not been submitted in my gallery before.

Before 1999: Unfortuantely, I don't have any of those drawings anymore. Back then, I had a great interest in animals and drew them all the time. Other than Charlie Brown and other cartoon characters, I generally avoided drawing human beings. My mother showed me how to use bubble outlines for drawing, a valuable technique. I discovered anime in middle school, two years before the Pokemon craze. I actually watched very little anime but the few I seen left a lasting impression on me.

1999-2000: Through anime, it was my first stepping stone to attempt to draw the human figure....and shifting attention to drawing human beings. I had no clue about proportions and the didn't really understand shading.

2000-2001: I improved on the proportions, but I didn't actually know any anatomy. I just drew based on what "looked right" in my eyes. In this picture, a classmate at the time note the feet were too parallel and they should point away slightly from each other XD. I followed her advice after that. I also got a sketchbook by that time which contains a lot of character concepts.

2001-2002: I took art class that year. Honestly, I hated it because I wasn't allowed to draw what I want. However, this helped me out in the long run so I'm thankful that I went through that. I didn't learn anything about drawing a human figure at this point. Instead I learned about light sourcing (I wasn't good at it), vanishing points, and ways to show depth. This sample, is something I drew outside of class. I tried to use composition and vanishing point. I gave outdoor backgrounds a little more focus that year.

2002-2003: I took a second art class. This time I actually enjoyed the class. There was a much larger focus on drawing the human figure this time. It also helped that the teacher was more open to trying things on your own. I learned the basic proportions of a human being and finally broke away som bad habits. I started to develop an interest in more realistic styles like that Ayami Kojima and Tetsuya Nomura. I also started to realize I cannot emulate styles well anyways to continue that path I was going previously.

2003-2004: I am repeating myself here, but I think it was important time as far as my growth was concerned.... I was fortunate enough that meet a classmate who had interest in art. He looked at many of my drawings and critiqued me; this was the first time that someone has pinpointed so many anatomical errors. The most common error he pointed out were the flatness of the hands and feet and lack of muscle tones. He even let me borrow a book that helped me immensely. The hands now had a more solid form now that I understood the bone structures of the hand. I learned the feet are more of wedge shaped and not flat. I started to draw muscles with more definition and shape. I used just make the arms thicker, but without the curves on the arms. I started using spheres, prisms, and other 3D objects as outline instead of circles, which aided in drawing from a variety of poses in deep space. My style started taking on a more realistic direction. I did take painting for one semester, and the teacher said that even cartoonists draw realistically before they choose to draw in their chosen style. I didn't understand what he meant until semester was over. It seems like a sick trade-off, but I was not as imaginative as I used to be .

Once again it's a list of random facts about myself. I'm not going to tag anybody unless you want to be tagged.

1) Once in a while I try to be organized, but I don't follow through in the long run >_<

2) I learned to ride a bike at a rather late age.

3) I am usually a very quiet.

4) I like to take naps

5) When I was child I used to be afraid of dogs but grew fond of them as I got older

6) I keep much of my old artwork, a few were submitted to deviations and scraps. They look awfult to me, but it's a way to monitor my progress or had concepts that I liked. I will post up a journal about this later on.

This a follow-up of my last journal entry (Jan 4, 2006). I will now present deviants who would like to be recognized. I'm not a great writer, so bear with me....

1)
He is a writer for Bad Place Productions with a goal for publishing comics. Obviously he is knowlegable of comic strip writing. BadPlace has several stories in the works.

A young artist that is steadily improving. Digital coloring is her strength. Her works are cheerful and brightly colored.

A cartoonist. She has great range in style and technique. Her comic strips have well-organized panels and good composition in the drawings. Her latest strips are vibrantly colored and capture movement very well.

I hope you guys enjoyed the Christmas holiday and New Years. I apologize if I didn't comment lately. There is a lot of writings and pictures people have submitted at once .
Anyways, I still have a slot (I may add more slots). I was also not in the best of moods. The last day is Saturday, Jan 6th. After that, I will just feature those who are already listed.

Rotten Deviants

This has been brought to my attention...

A deviation ended up in the popular list and the deviant got flamed for not being "deserving". Honestly, this deviant needs more practice, but so does everyone else. There is little control over popularity on dA anyways.

Even though unpleasant behavior is the reality of the internet, the way people treated her was RUDE, INCONSIDERATE, and just plain UNACCEPTABLE. I can't believe those people who call themselves artists can be so shallow. An attitude like that shows they have not matured as artists. This is a art website made for EVERBODY, NOT a f$&#ing exclusive club for the "elite". There are many who come to learn and recieve some encouragement to continue their art.

PLEASE SHOW SUPPORT TO ARTISTS AT ALL LEVELS!!!!

Finding Old Art

I have tons of old artwork scattered around and will upload when I find them. I am looking for the ones that I think would be worth posting. Afterwards, I can concentrate on new works and finishing the ones I took a break from.

I also updated Flying Skateboarder [link] and Samurai Duel [link] with larger images and without any cleaning and image sharpening from Photoshop. I believe this would give a better view of my original.

*update*
I found some of my artwork and I decided to add some finishing touches to them instead of submitting them right away. I am also going to darken some by my previous deviations so they can be a little easier to see.
