Y'alls might have noticed I've been uploading shots from a place called Pleasure Beach. Yeah, that's about all I have at the moment. I'm still without scanner (film or otherwise) so a lot of my darkroom photos just aren't going to be on the internet any time soon. Bummer, right? In the meantime I guess you'll be seeing a lot of digital/colour film.

Possible upcoming projects? I'd like to get into some fetish stuff, both modeling and photographing. We'll see.

Also, it's worth mentioning that there was a fire at Pleasure Beach not more than a few days after I was last there. The guy they caught and are charging with arson apparently got totz high on pot, climbed one of the radio towers, and was tossing the airplane signal lights down before setting the fire. I'd like to shake that man's hand.

My handcut negative strips are one exposure too long to fit in the negative adapter, the ones I did manage to scan are brown (thought I was shooting black and white? Even so, the negatives are purple!), and the whole damn thing looks like it's covered in some kind of cyanobacteria. I've been scrubbing the glass for the past 24 hours, on the hour, and it keeps coming back.

Fuck you, scanner, in the immortal words of my roommate. And Mod Squad jokes may be involved sooner or later.

Big plans are in the works for Saturday, and I'm already well-stocked on Kodak Professional 400CN and Kodak Gold 200 (that is...I could afford to buy one of each). Unfortunately CVS seems to have made the crucial decision to stop carrying 400TX. Their loss. I guess I'll just start buying film off Adorama now.

At any rate, I haven't been totally bored out of my mind...After a couple years of being completely indifferent, I noticed an abandoned drive-in screen in CT. That is to say, I haven't liked it much since I started shooting film and this just confirms it. Film is so much easier when you really sit down and compare them. Here I was, sitting around and whining in my head about the level of grain in my photos from tonight, and I just now realized I never even bothered to change the ISO. When you have a roll of 400 speed film, you don't have to think about that. And so I didn't.

Oh well. Looking forward to shooting more film when I have time.

I've got a few more shots to upload from today's BSS excursion. Nothing terribly good, this was another memory builder rather than strictly a photo shoot. The spontaneous stuff such as kicking bees' nests and playing with frogs and sitting on a hot roof (rubber, not tin) rarely makes it onto film.

On a related note, there doesn't seem to be much going on in the way of demolition or even abatement yet. Still the same as ever. I'm assuming they still want to rip her down by January but I'm skeptical enough to at least hope for one more (last) visit or delayed demo.
Belchertown State School is to be no more within a few short months.

Demolition is expected to run until the winter, then building starts in January. The rumour mill is cranking out whispers that abatement has already begun.

The fellows and I are heading out soon to give her a goodbye, a farewell tour (we are actually giving someone a tour, apparently). I expect to take photos of all the goodies I've missed and will miss...The underground basketball court, the cozy dusted tunnels, maybe even that walk-through autoclave.

The necessary task for the scholarship was to write a blog entry about the usual cheesy subject. I'm fairly certain I won't win by brute force (or overall score), but there is another scholarship based on how "viral" I can get my blog. If enough people view and vote for that entry, I can possibly win a few hundred bucks. And I really need the cash.
You don't even have to read it, just hit the little yellow "vote" button. Made it inside the buildings (some jerk-off left the doors open, but at least it's easier for me) and did a little bit of tunneling. We tried to tunnel into a partially active building but that was relatively unsuccessful. Kind of funny, actually.

My interiors aren't much better than the exteriors from a couple months ago. It was dark most of the time so I attempted light painting, but once again, my camera couldn't handle the work. They might look better after minor tweaking, but we'll see.
Well, you better get 'em while they're hot...literally. The administration and south wing sections of the abandoned hospital burned last night, they looked pretty wrecked from the pictures I've seen. Anything that you'll see in my photos is most likely ash now.
Nothing really spectacular since the interior of the buildings was a bit boring, and my camera hates me (which has nothing to do with me dropping it on its lens - I'm not being sarcastic). But it's right on the beach and has a view of the ocean (hence the name, if you can guess it), so that was pleasant.
There's a certain quality about B&W photos, especially the way I do them. This is why I've put the latest one ("Drawers") in the Macabre category. It's a bit more than just an architectural interior or a miscellaneous.
The goal of the trip was a well-known abandoned mental hospital - I hesitate to name names since my boyfriend discourages that sort of behaviour, and I'd hate for some punk kid to find his death in there. At any rate, expect plenty of decay and some pretty colours.
Unfortunately no interior shots of the latter, most of the time there was spent wandering around in tunnels and not knowing exactly what to do. Got exterior shots, both after escaping the tunnels in search of daylight, and after getting permission from the on-site cops.

Though it's worth mentioning that BSS gave me a few exploring milestones - today I climbed a ladder for the first time (in my life, I believe), and it was my first time inside a state institution. Hooray.
Today's two sets aren't overall my best work, in my opinion, but maybe I can manage something with them. I got a few shots that I think are fantastic.

Lately I've noticed I get this really strange feeling when I'm inside an abandoned site. I feel really, truly, genuinely afraid.

It's not just the fear of getting caught by security, or falling through a floor, or running into the occasional meth lab accompanied by ornery hobo.

I'm sincerely afraid that I'll be caught and hauled out of there (or have to haul ass instead) before I get a chance to take all my photos. Like I'll have 5 and suddenly discover footsteps or a police car.

It would be nice to know I'm not the only one who feels this way...

I'm always told that art is about process, not product, but isn't it a hell of a feeling to come out of an abandoned site, unscathed and free, and knowing you have 100 photos sitting in your camera? I feel so accomplished and satisfied with that. Then I go home and clean them up, show them off, and itch and scratch to do it all over again.

Sounds like I'm all about the photos and not the exploring, but I really feel I'm at my best when I have an abandonment to work with. Trees and crochet hooks are nice but I feel more satisfaction from a picture of an old chair. Maybe I like the aforementioned adrenaline kick.

I hope I get all my photos on Saturday.

So...I got my pack of stickers from Pantheon Books yesterday for having entered the Only Revolutions art contest. Made me pretty happy since for the longest time I didn't think I was getting any, then I realized I would be and I had to wait even longer. Like I'm sure you're waiting for this entry to go somewhere art-oriented.

The only thing that could have made me happier than those stickers (this week, at least) was to receive an email from someone at Pantheon saying that they and Mark loved my contest submission so much, they want to use it as part of the new collage (on the coverflaps) for the paperback edition of OR. I'm so excited!
