Dana went years without seeing comics, she tried to fill that void with x-men cards and cartoons, but it just wasn’t the same. By the time she came around and decided she wanted comics back in her life, comics had moved away without a forwarding address. Years passed and she again filled the void, this time with girly things like boys and the babysitters club. Then one day when Dana was in college studying Philosophy, a friend told her about a local comic book store and there she found comics again. Her dear comics were just as she remembered. The first two she got on the day of their reunion were Ultimate Spiderman #1, which had just been released, and Identity Crisis #1, which brings us to the most important chapter of her life….

The cover of Identity Crisis #1 was the sketch variant by MIchael Turner, the artist who ultimately inspired her to work in comics. She got the WACKY idea that she should photocopy and ink this image, even though she didn’t really know what that meant.
So here's the thing. Working as I do, currently with no sort of regular gig, I get a little work here a little work there and I typically get a per page rate. And every time I work on something new I get a touch stressed.

Every project and every person is different so it's hard for me to set my per page rate at a specific number. I have to take into account the hours the page is likely to take, the amount of detail, cost of production, and I also try to take into account where the money is coming from.

A lot of the smaller books are self-funded by the creators, so it's hard to ask for the amount I would ask from a company because they can't afford it. In the past I have agreed to take a percentage of sales, but I've been screwed by that at times, so typically I work per page now. I always worry with the self-funded guys, cause I want a fair amount of money, but I don't want then to go elsewhere either I talked to my friend Gary about this once he gave me some solid advice, said I should just think about what my time is worth.

So here's my question to you...do you have a set rate, if so feel free to pimp yourself now...how do you figure the worth of ur work (and also if you sell ur art how do u figure out that), have you ever worked for a part of profit? would you? Pretty much if you have any thoughts on anything related let's here them. Also, if you have any advice for me shoot.

Ok, so here's what I'm wondering about lately.

Whenever I get a comment or a fav on deviantart, I like to follow it up with a response and I like to go to the persons page and say thanks, and check out their gallery and stuff. To me it's common courtesy, but heck to each there own, and I realize some people get too much attention to respond to everyone who makes any kinda thing.

Anyway, here's the opinion portion of my journal. Now I am not saying either side here is right or wrong I'm just asking what you think. So you know how some people go to a page of a person after they get a favorite, and they post a link to the thing that was faved, along with the thank you, or like they'll post the name of the deviation.

Now I'm not saying it is or isn't a tactic, but people seem to be pimping themselves in their thank you comments. Now again, I don't have a problem with this, I'm just curious if you guys do this, or if you think it's ok or what...i think about doing it, but I don't want to seem pretentious and all full of myself, if you know me at all you know I am super self-concious.

What do you think, it's a good way to spread ur work, but I don't want to seem like all about myself or cocky, i really do just go to the pages to say thanks and to return the kindess by checking out out their stuff too.

Thoughts?

I am a huge fan of the books and am typically very much the person who nitpicks the little changes. I find myself frustrated with the TwiHards general thoughts on this film. I think people had unrealistic expectations and don't take movie constraints into account. The most we can hope for in a book to film experience is that it keeps the general plot and the same tone. I thought twilight succeeded on both accounts. To the people who are complaining about the effects, you should've known going in it it was a small production company the film had a 35 million dollar budget, but i think it could've been a lot worse. Really it's not the end of the world. As for people complaining about cutting things out and changing the ordering a bit, it's a 498 pg book sacrifices had to be made, and while the blood testing scene is great it wasn't critical to the story. I think they did a great job of picking what to sacrifice. For those people who have critiques about the acting, i think they did a fine job. Every person interprets a character in their own way and all that can be asked of the actors is to do a convincing version of their interpretations, which i believe they did. For those who had a problem with the way Edward talked allow me to quote from the book for you "And the way he sometimes spoke, with unfamiliar cadences and phrases that better fit the style of a turn-of-the-century novel than that of a twenty-first-century classroom"pg 138. Everyone keeps referring to the fact that Rob Pattinson acted weird and that the dialog was weird and it was all very uncomfortable here's the thing, it was supposed to be all of that. i think Rob EXPERTLY portrayed a character who is charming in such a classic way. As for those complaining that the love story took a back seat or wasn't explained enough, again, they only have so much time. They were extremely true to the book and a lot of the dialogue was exactly the same as the book. I especially loved how they worked in the narration from Bella. I cannot understand what everyone is freaking out about I think it was a fabulous interpretation of great literature and i think it was a refreshingly unique take on a common story which makes it a great movie aside from the books. Katherine Hardwick did a fabulous job, as did the cast and crew...with possible exception of hair and make-up who i think dropped the ball. Read the books, watch the movie, it's all worth your time.

So by now all of you fancy folks know about the growing sensation that is Zuda comics. If you don't let me cut to the chase, every month a number of new webcomics are posted on the site and voted on by everyone who will take the time to make a free account. The winner gets a year gig on Zuda producing their comic. So, why am I telling you?

Well, two of my very favorite people Justin and Will have a comic for your consideration in this months contest. The comic is called Dash Steel: Freelance Adventurer. This comic is fabulous! I wouldn't lie to you, but don't take my word for it, got to [link] and read it for yourself. Oh, yea, and vote, I'll be your best friend!

Now for updates:

1) I got a new scanner! No, not just a new scanner a magical machine that is mac compatible, and it copies, prints ans faxes, hot damn this thing is fancy! So, you should be seeing new work from me very soon.

2) As most of you know I also work at a comic book store. The last few weeks on new comic day I have been making fun little tags that i wear, that are aimed at promoting one comic I am really excited about that week. It started cause I was really psyched about what is going on in X-Men. The tags started out pretty basic, but are getting more fun, I thought it would be fun to post my weekly tags here, but I don't want my watchers to have to deal with random weekly deviations, so I'll be posting them in my scraps, take a look and if you're curious, you can subscribe to my scraps (first 3 are already there)

3) I seem like a terrible person, because I have been ignoring everything on this site and others, I have been way busy with work and a bit of drama, i love you all, i have it all saved to be attended to, just give me a second I swear my comments are coming.

4) Did you notice I hit 5,000 pageviews? That's insane, thanks all!

So, I have a bit of a problem.

All of you that know me know that I Ink because i genuinely love to Ink. It's my escape and it's my artistic expression and even the tedious parts are relaxing, except ruler work, which i hate.

As you may have noticed i haven't posted anything in quite some time. There are a few reasons for that.

One is that my scanner at the premature age of 1 year old, died, so, until i can afford a new one i have to make a trip to kinkos, which is not something i enjoy doing.

Another is that, i haven't been forced to Ink. Usually I enjoy the down time between pages, because i can play around with fun pages, and experiment with new techniques and tools, but at the moment that is not the case.

Lastly is the main reason, and the source of my troubles. As you know and as i have blogged, Michael Turner died in June. If you've been around me, you would have noticed that i was kind of a zombie for a while and am frankly still dealing.

So, my thought process after that happened went something like this:

First i was shocked and just got the wind knocked out of me, then i sobbed for a good six hours and got some of that out of me, and then i have the moment you have after something shakes you, where you take it in, and decide how to proceed.

As with all tragedy, i tried to let it motivate me. I set my mind to not procrastinate cause life is short, and to focus on being the best inker i could be in appreciation of his influence on me, because he inspired me to do all of this.

But sometimes, setting your mind to do something and actually doing it are vastly different things. When i got back to my normal routine, I just kinda pushed through the tedium of life. I inked, but i did so absent-mindedly.I threw myself into prep for con and i tried to shake off the feeling of pointlessness.

Since i've been back from con, i haven't been able to ink, not a page. I feel like part of it, is this spirit crushing feeling of pointlessness. Not because I don't still have goal where inking is concerned, but because i cannot ignore the fact that my main goal, and my driving force, is now forever out of reach.

And then, there is the paralyzing fear. I am afraid if I ink, I will be a dissapointment, or I will only get sad thinking of things that used to make me happy.

Ok, so, by know you're thinking that I am seriously over-reacting to a tragedy that happened a little less than two months ago, to a guy i barely knew.

The fact of the matter is, niether this entry of my initial reflections on the matter can adiquitely describe the impact Michael Turners art had on my life, it would be accurate to say he changed my life, and my career plans in a major way. he helped me discover a part of myself I didn't know was missing.

So, all that being the case, I can't bring myself to sit down and ink right now. Someone I know called me on it the other day, and I don't think he gets why that is, I think people are perceiving my unwillingness as laziness.

I don't know, tomorrow I have the day off, and I think I am going to try to ink again, who knows if I'll manage to do so.

As is the case with all of my journals here, i just wanted to vent a little, let you guys know what's up, and maybe get a little advice, whether you've gone through something like this or not.

So, I did a quick partial ink of a Turner cover today, it felt good, comfortable and stress free, now that i've gotten a little past the nerves i think i am going to ink this cover, completely and actually trying this time lol, it's fun! So yea, see I did something, yay!

<a href="http://s217.photobucket.com/albums/cc298/bgbatgirl117/?action=view&current>hoto1.jpg"

this is property of Marvel Comics, obviously.

So, I've just gotten back from Comic Con and the last couple of weeks have been very eye opening. I feel like i have learned a lot in a little time and I have a lot of motivation to move forward right now.

I want to focus on my inking and getting to a place where I finally feel comfortable sending in that 3 years in the making submission (those of you who know me know what I'm talking about).

Thanks to a lot of wonderfully generous people in my life I have a lot of great art to work over and really see what I can do.

I still have commitments that will take some time away from said submission but I am happy with where I am at. I am still working on Planet Pantheon with , and and hopefully things will move forward with that soon. Then of course I have the money jobs, which I love as well, and pay the bills

I did have to leave Border City, it just was too much to take on with my current schedule so I finished off the issue and now have to focus on other things. Nothing against the gang on that book, it's just that something had to give.

I moved a lot of my stuff to scraps, that's not a reflection of my lack of appreciation for the art, or what I have done in the past, I just want to focus my deviantart on showing off the best of what I have to offer, and what I am currently working on. As time goes on I might move more stuff there, if so, keep in mind it is because of my inks, nothing else.

With any luck I want to Ink at least one page a week that is aimed towards my goal of growing as an Inker and testing my limits. If I am permitted to I will post the pages here and I would really appreciate any feedback you all have to offer (bad or good, but maybe make it a sandwich good bad good, soften the blow, hahaha jk)

How about all of you, what are your goals?

So here's me, working my tail off, wish me luck

From my experience with drawing books, i knew that there was such a person as an Inker, but i myself had never inked anything. The cover I came across was issue 1 the sketch variant.

I thought to myself how much i loved the art and I guess I just wanted to be close to it (if that makes any sense), so i decided I would photocopy the cover and Ink it. After that it was just one sketch cover after another of his i was buying, and then other people's and then i finally legitimately became an inker. He made me realize that all a long Inking was the role in comics I wanted to play, i didn't want to create the images, i wanted to build on them, and collaborate with the artists i admired and respected.

My goal in inking was to work with Mike on as little as one panel ever, just once, and I wanted to, and still want to work for Aspen. I know it's not the same, but i probably will ink a good amount of those turner sketch covers again in the future, if only to remind me what made me love inking to begin with, and who is responsible for that.

I met Mike a couple of times, he was always very nice and supportive of his fans, I cannot say how much of an impact this one man and his art have had on my life, and I am so grateful. So,

I've decided to post in memory, that first cover i ever inked, my first ink ever, it's so obvious i had no idea what i was doing, but, it has meant everything to me and my work. R.I.P. Michael Turner

Last year at San Diego Comic Con, I got to talk to Mike for a little while. He was in very good spirits because he was feeling a lot better, he told me that he had gained 25lbs, I told him I was happy. We got to talking somehow about that time period when he had the facial hair I wasn't especially fond of, he told me he did it because he lost a bet with Geoff Johns, something about a Lakers game, haha, he was a goofy person and I just wanted to share a happy memory along with all the sad.

Next month, Marvel Comics is releasing Uncanny X-Men #500, it's a huge issue, and there is a Michael Turner Variant cover. I wonder if it's the last new cover we'll see from him.

I've been saving up for this Kiani Lava edition Turner statue. i have $410 saved, after Mike died I decided I would be better off giving the money I saved up to one of preferred charities (the ACS) in his name so that's what I'm gonna do as soon as the money clears in my account, hopefully it'll help someone.

So I'm talking to one of my pencilers right now, and we got to talking about a page i just inked for him.

I mentioned that i was pretty happy that one of the characters was wearing boots and so i got to thinking, did you guys know that my absolute favorite thing to ink is boots, man they're fun I just love the look of them and fun things i get to try on them. And boots are just kinda hot in general

So guys, what are your favorite, and least favorite things to work on?

p.s. I think the picture that really turned me onto boots and inking boots was this one: [link] which is from Nightwing Issue 88, pencilled by Shane Davis and Inked by Marlo Alquiza, awesome picture in general.

Oh, and this one [link] this one on of the very first full sized pages I inked, definitely the first brush work i ever did, this is obviously the pencilled version, but it's a page my friend Matt did. He is awesome, and I must say he has excellent...boots haha.

Y'know, it just hit me that I never put any of my Matt pages on here, hmmm, I wonder if there was a reason for that...Justin, Matt any ideas?

So something has been on my mind, and as usual I depend on u guys who know help me sort through it.

It's a common belief that to be a successful inker you must first be a proficient penciler. As a matter of fact Gary Martin flat out says in his book, before you get into this book, learn to draw. So I'm wondering what you guys make of that.

How important is it for an inker to be a a good penciler?

Here's something ya'll might not have known about me; growing up I loved drawing, for a while i got really into it and picked up all the books and would play drawing games (long story) with my friends. What happened is that my ability to create an image from scratch hindered me, in fear of sounding to harsh I lacked imagination, I never had something in my head I wanted to express on paper.

I would always have friends tell me what to draw being as specific as possible. This eventually frustrated me and made drawing into a chore, I got very frustrated until it was no longer worth it for me to draw every day.

I took a break and I eventually ran into a comic book with a sketch cover, it was one of the covers to Identity Crisis (Michael Turner of course). I was so entranced by the art that it inspired me to want to create, but I knew I was no longer in love with drawing.

Well, via my drawing books, I had heard about inking and I thought, what greater way to enjoy the art, than to study it and contribute to it by inking it. I had no idea what inking really was at the time, so to be honest I essentially traced a photocopy of that cover. I found that there was something that inking did for me, very much like what I used to feel about drawing, but without the added pressure of making things up.

I love that inking is still artistic expression and can still very much be fulfilling, but in addition you get to work on art that u appreciate and there's such a different kind of appreciation you get for a penciler when you ink their work and u really experience the art in a new way, while bringing yourself and your style to it.

In short, I found Inking was everything I loved about drawing with none of the frustration of a blank sheet. After that I ended up inking everything I could find and I was only drawing at that point, to have something to Ink.

Once I started finding more sketch covers and eventually working on books, drawing became a thing of the past. With the exception of maybe 3 occasions since I have been inking (which began a little over a year ago)I haven't drawn at all.

Back to the point, the idea as I understand it behind being a penciler preceding being an inker, is so that you can spot flaws in the pencils and correct them (after all one of the inkers main duties is editorial in nature, see my previous journals). I don't think I have a problem in that department, my past in penciling has taught me enough to spot things like wonky anatomy, but I feel like maybe there's more to it. So, think about my work and think about inking, and tell me what you think about my drawing woes.

Weird to bring it up, but I thought about drawing today, I might draw tomorrow, we'll see. Might have sounded like a ramble, not sure if I made sense but if you have any thoughts about Inkers and being able to draw i'd like to hear them.

so,
through partial procrastination, but mostly my overwhelming work load, i have around 40 pages that need to be inked in the about 40 days until San Diego Comic Con. Now, this would be all well and good if i didn't have a non-inking job to worry about, well not all well and good, but certainly doable. I figured out that based on the complexity of the pages i have i can finish the pages in 30 days of inking. I went through my schedule and if i do nothing else but Ink outside of work I have 30.5 days of time to ink (the .5 days are after work on Sundays LOL). To conclude, I'm a little on edge haha, I love you all, but for the love of God dont ask me to ink anything for you right now hahaha.
So, I was talking to a friend about inkers, and I mentioned some of my favorites as well as some that I think are missing the mark, to put it nicely. He made a point that I appear to only ever Love or Hate an Inker and never talk about Average Inkers. This started a conversation about what makes an inker great, a failure, or somewhere in between. My philosophy is that a great Inker has 3 things going for them: technical skills, style, and chemistry with the Penciler they are working with. An amazing Inker has all 3 of these thing, a weak Inker has none and those who only have one or two fall in between. After that I mentioned to my friend that I probably dont talk about average Inkers because who ever really has the urge to talk about average anything? You want to praise the talented, occasionally bitch about failures but could you ever imagine going to a friend and saying " I just had to tell you about this unbelievably average pasta I had last night"? Anyway, just wanted to share my thoughts on what makes an Inker bad, average, or great, any thoughts?

So I've been writing lately and it's such a different experience than inking. Inking to me is a physical manifestation of art, you let the ink flow and express your interpretation, it's simple yet physically draining. Writing on the other hand just requires clicks on a keyboard but is so emotionally exhausting, especially the way I do it I think. I have a tendency to write about sad things or generally mushy things and sometimes it gets really deep and I just have to stop and pull back. I doubt if I could write on a regular basis like many of my friends it really is an experience for me, and as much as I like having finished work, I almost hate the process. That's another difference between writing and inking Inking is all about the process for me and the end result is like the cherry on top. Even in high school when I wrote on my school paper, even about light hearted things (cause I mostly did features, reviews really) I had a tendency to get wrapped up in nitpicking and I was never happy with a finished piece. I guess what I am trying to say is writing is really difficult for me and I have so much respect for all you crazy people who put yourself through this all the time, Justin and Naomi, hat's off to you. And yes Naomi, you can read my new story, er what I have so far.

I always wonder what it's like for people of my parent generation, when really well know actors/actresses of their generation die, but I guess this is it. I guess it's just like, wow, I just saw him in a movie and he was alive, and now he won't be in anymore movies (except of course"Dark Knight"). Wow, I know I'm not saying a lot, because I just don't know what to say. This is weird, I think I wrote this more to let people know in case they didn't. This is so sad. Also, on that note, it appears to have been a drug overdose, pills of some sort, but that's just what they're saying so far. I bet I'll have this processed better later today, I don't know.

So, I'm inking right now,and I got to thinking. Whenever I go to ink a page I look it over, I make figure out a game plan, and then I just let the ink hit the paper. A problem I have a lot is dealing with the role of the inker. Don't get me wrong...I'm not one of those diva inkers that needs more attention, the people I work with are the best, and I can live peacefully with just helping the penciler shine. My problem comes about when I try to define how much of me should go into a page. Of course, inking isn't just about tracing, but you don't want to like completely discard the penciers intent either. My signature on my comments right now kind of describes how I feel about what an inker should contribute to a page. Right now, inking this page, and in general, i find myself holding back. I know I probably shouldn't and the people I work with really are very cool about me trying things. The thing is, no matter how much I want to put into a page, I still find myself worried about ruining beautiful art or putting too much of myself out there. I sit at my desk with white ink within arms reach, and every time I think I overstepped I just shave down the line, or white it out completely and do it again. What bothers me, and what is bothering me now, is a lot of times i really like the look of what I had done and then reconsider. I wish I wasn't so afraid to take the leap! I don't know...I'm ranting again I think I just needed to type out the lunacy going through my head. Back to the page (Planet Pantheon page..if you were wondering).

So you know how you have something in your life that kinda centers you and keeps you sane? For me, that's inking.Right now I'm in the middle of finals which have kept me from inking for the last 3 weeks and won't release me from their grip of doom until the 19th. I am going crazy from inking withdrawal. I think when finals are done I will lock myself away with my inking for a week just to relieve all the stress. That's all, I just needed to vent, love you all.

So the last few days have been crazy. I've been doing A LOT of inking (which I don't think I can post yet as most of it is interiors of books) trying to finish everything everyone needs so that I can focus on finals. That being said, if anyone talks to me between now and Dec. 14th know that I am officially in finals mode and out of my mind!! On the bright side, if all goes well, I graduate after Dec. 14th and no more school to distract from important things like inking, lol. I'll get through it, I always do, but I will panic for a while for sure Hope everyone is doing awesome. *internet hug*
