Yeah, was a little longer absence than expected, but hey, I'm back again.

I read a really amazing novel on vacation, "The Gun Seller" by Hugh Laurie. House... err Laurie's writing style is incredibly delightful, it was so fun to read. He expertly combines great, witty humor with suspense and compelling storytelling--just read the first two pages, and you don't wanna lay down the book again. It's about Thomas Lang, an ex-military freelancing sort-of mercenary, who gets pitted between different Intelligence Agencies and the military-industrial complex just because he adheres to his moral code when he doesn't want to do a job that involves assassination and instead chooses to warn the intended target. The way the story unfolds is always a little confusing at first, you always want to find out why and what happens next, but at it progresses, everything starts to make sense. Even to the point where Lang ends up on the roof of an embassy, among terrorists and The Gun Seller. I don't think any description really does the book justice, but if you're even remotely into the genre of spy-stuff, I can only recommend you to check it out at the bookstore, or read the first few pages on Amazon. I rarely managed to put the book down, as it was so great to read Lang's often self-ironic perspective on things (it's written in the 1st person perspective), and overall the way Hugh Laurie writes and builds up plot and suspense. Definitely one of the best novels I've read in a while, a very fresh and different book from all the mainstream thrillers.

At times, this style reminded me of some very impressive Star Wars fanfics, such as The_Face's Galaxy Noir stories, and Quiet_Mandalorian's Have Blaster, Will Travel (both from TheForce.Net Fan Fiction forums, both absolutely worth checking out). This kind of storytelling is right up my alley, I guess.

Also, I finally took some time to catch up with the KotOR comics (from 31-40), and let me suffice to say that I'm blown away. The way John Jackson Miller tied up all the strings from the whole KotOR Covenant stories in Vindication was impressive, and the revelation that it would be Draay, not Haazen, who will become Sion, was plain awesome. And Gryph was just great, too, being all in awe at that expertly pulled-off "long con". And speaking of cons, I can't wait to see what expert scam "Mastermind" pulls off next. Also, it was great to see some development on the Jarael and Rohlan stories, how Jarael suddenly turns out to be Force sensitive and Rohlan gets a chance to clear his image as a dangerous Mandalorian by becoming a successful swoop-duelist.
To be honest, I often couldn't really relate to the whole Covenant arc in previous issues of KotOR, I never really knew what to do with them, being more interested in what Zayne and his motley crew did. Of course, it is all linked, and the finale in Vindication finally made me realize that, and also grasp what that Covenant stuff was all about. That, in my opinion, really is masterful storytelling, it felt just like when you found out who Tyler Durden really was in Fight Club, or came to know Atlas's true identity in Bioshock. Or, to stay in the comic sector, you can even compare it with Adrian Veidt's plan for world-wide piece in Watchmen, what at first seemed abstract but actually made a lot of sense once you finished the last comic. It's the same thing with the KotOR storyline, and JJM did a great job with illustrating the impact of Haazen's "long con", and I'm still in awe how suddenly everything made sense. I'm even considering to re-read the first 30 issues now, to put it all into new context, as that is what it does, just like Fight Club, Bioshock and Watchmen. My only complaint would be that it actually took a long 30 issues to reach that point, but then again, it's been such a long time since I last read KotOR, maybe it's just because I forgot some things. And then again, this being a "long con", shortening it wouldn't really do it justice, now would it?

Okay, so much for book reviews from me...

But, to stay in the writing business, let me give you a little update on When Few Stood Against Many, my attempt to...

The Star Wars Artist Guild's back, a guild of very talented fan artists creating some of the most original SW art you can find, mostly centered on RPG. It's also big on requests, so if you want a PC or OC of your's illustrated, be sure to give it a go.
But most importantly, check it out to widen your horizons on SW fan artwork, there's really brilliant stuff over there.

This is possibly the most amazing game I've ever played.

Please beware of spoilers in this kinda "review".

It has an unreached atmosphere and a so compelling, awesomely-done story nearly any other game out there could take a leaf out of. The stunning graphics and grandiose 5.1 Dolby Digital sound and soundtrack is only a nice side effect (I'm playing on full details on a second rate PC, and I still can't believe it looks that good with a totally smooth framerate).

It has one of the most jaw-dropping scenes in game history, the one where you reach Ryan's office and you are revealed the truth about Atlas and frankly, yourself, the player. Ryan's "sacrifice" gave me troubles closing my mouth again after minutes, and the revelation was so unbelievably great that I reloaded the last savegame to "watch" it again, to take it in completely. That scene alone makes Bioshock a must-play.

However, there isn't only praise lost for Bioshock. The beforementioned scene takes place at about 3/4 of the game, and they should've ended it there. While the randomly swapping plasmids and protecting Little Sisters is a very great idea, the final fight itself, and both endings, were kinda underwhelming. Especially the fight against Fontaine was sucker, it's the average FPS boss enemy fast-food, as we've seen it in hundreds of games before. I would've hoped for a more original concept for confronting that guy. I've seen both endings, and for me, they aren't really giving the story a satisfying, concluding frame. It's too centered on the Little Sisters, I think, because there's so much more fascinating about Rapture than just them, and by the audio tapes alone, you're far from getting the whole picture. While especially the "not offering the whole picture" is probably one of the main design ideas behind Bioshock, as it makes the player turn on his brain for once and animates him to become proactive in building the story (something nearly no game has done before, and for which I'm more than thankful for because this hopefully makes "post-Bioshock" games regard proper storytelling more highly), I think the game is giving the player a little bit too much freedom in that direction. Even when you do manage to find and listen to all audio tapes in the game (I tried, but I think I only found about 90%), it still doesn't give you enough to know what is and was going on in Rapture. You get the general idea, but you can only imagine the details, and each player will have another impression of Rapture's past. But as I said before, exactly that was probably intended by the creators of the game, and (hopefully) not only because they want to use it as a cliffhanger to make more people buy a sequel. I think highly enough of the people behind Bioshock that they aren't looking only for profit, and really want get their game's story get into the minds of the players. But still, I feel a bit betrayed by the game, as it raises so many questions and doesn't offer a satisfying amount of answers to them, let alone and ending that only raises more questions. Yes, it is true that this adds a lot to the mystery of Rapture, but it's a little bit too much mystery in my opinion.

Another thing that I'd like to criticize is that all too often, Bioshock comes down to being like every other plain shooter out there. Yes, there are a lot of great, creepy shocker moments (with excellently applied scripted sequences), and there really are millions of ways to deal with a threat, but the farther you're into the game, the less different ways to deal with said threats you use. Once you've got enough plasmids, tonics and ammo, and found your personal best way to deal with splicers and Big Daddys, you won't experiment to find other solutions any more, like you had in the first few hours of the game. I, for my part, have become a sorta "close-combatist", applying the "zapp 'em, then whack 'em" tactic on splicers most of the time. With my tonics spent on giving the wrench as much impact as possible, and other tonics spent on lightning and freeze fields around me, I just stun a splicer with an electro-bolt, move up to him and take him out with two or three wrench-bashes. I only have to change that tactic when it comes to Houdini splicers and these Thuggish splicers that are kinda immune to electro-bolts because they use 'em themselves, and of course for Big Daddys. But since there are only so few enemy types, I find good tactics for them very soon as well, and it starts to get boring. You don't want to experiment any longer, because you don't wanna waste time, and since the enemies are becoming harder, too, you don't wanna die all too often.
Further on, some objectives are very annoying, because you have to return to places you've already been and pick up items that weren't pick-up-able bef...

Alright, I said I'd be doing a banner for the TheForce.Net Fan Art forums, with artwork from Deviants here that do some amazing SW art.

Well, I lied. I made two banners.

Et voilà , here's the result:

Numbero Uno
et
Numbero Duo

I due time, you will see them on the forums, every now and then, since the banners there will be rotating every week or month. Here the banner submission thread where I posted them.

Now, here's to credit all the artists featured in the banners:
TEXT[ANNOUNCED(VO) and on black background]: Mandalorians

Shots of Mandalorian Drop Ships landing, and dozens of Mandalorian warriors, led by a Mandalorian in silver and golden armor, RONAN BAREC, forming up on the small, tropical island in the dimm ambience of the evening's sunset.

Havoc Squad backstory

Based on the artwork, I created a little backstory for Havoc Squad:

RC-1776 'Tracyn':
Sev-Six is the squad leader. He is specialized on explosives, grenades and rocket launchers (and DC-17m armor attachment). He's a very dark voice, and his orders are always clear and unmistakeable. Tracyn is a bit brutal with his enemies, but that makes him not less efficient. His squadmates are very loyal to him and are happy they have such a strong leader. He was trained, like to whole squad, by Sergeant Walon Vau and sometimes even by Jango Fett himself. And that's an honor 'cause they're they only squad apart from Delta Squad who were partially trained by the deadly Bounty Hunter. Tracyn has learned much from his Mandalorian trainer. He's modified his armor with a flamethrower biuld in above his right glove. He was personally trained by Jango in this weapon, and he uses it deadly efficient.
Quote: "Sa kyr'am Nau tracyn kad... - fire is what leads to victory"

RC-5665 'Ceptor':
Ceptor is not only Havoc Squad's 'second-in-command' but also the squad's sniper. Cep (how he somtimes also called) handles the sniper attachment of his DC-17m like no one else. But even better he uses the "BlasTech DC-13s High Precision Sniper Rifle", a weapon created by BlasTech with "help" of several "sniping-loving" commandos and military specialists (e.g. Sev from Delta Squad, Ceptor himself).
He has modified his helmet with a build-in rangefinder, so that he can snipe also with "usual" weapons without scopes. He is always the last one and gives the others rear cover. Without him, Havoc Squad would have fallen into many ambushes. He is nearly more respected by the rest of the squad than Tracyn. But Six-Five doesn't want a promotion, he's very content with his position.
Quote: "Only a clear headshot is a good headshot."

RC-2398 'Nate':
Nine-Eight is a military allrounder, drilled on each weapon. He places headshots with a blaster pistol just like he does with a heavy repeater. He masters military tactics like no other commando and Sergeant Vau doen't know how Nate got this skill. So he's involed with a mission before his squadmates are, and he alters each mission plan to a promising chance of success. Nate is also very interested in Mandalorian military history. Maybe that's the source for his tactical knownledge, who knows...?
Quote: "If we place two camo mines here and here, we can kill most of our enemies before they even get a chance to see us."

RC-1355 'Cyph':
Already his name partially indicates Five-Five's specialty (Cy from 'cyber'): technology. His skills in hacking terminals are nearly as good as Fixer's. Cyph is also the squads moral sustainer. His ironical comments animate his "brothers" and give 'em their guts back. He also has a special visor mode that let's him see droids throuh walls and locate terminals very quick.
Quote: "Ever seen a droid thru walls? Well, u won't get a chance as well."
