I know that DeviantArt is a massive arthub for people all over the world. And for those of us who are trying our hardest to work for ourselves, selling our art, being able to sell via DA would be a massive help.

Happy New Year to all of our Members

I hope you all had a great holiday and didn't drink too much.

So I have a question for you all, what are your current projects and new year projects going to be?

I know I have plenty.

How many of you are going to make corsets or even try something new. I might make myself a winter coat. If I start now I might be able to get it done for next winter.

I want to say a big thank you to our new Moderator for joining the quiet madness of CorsetCrafters :iconjanes-wardrobe: also happens to be having a january sale, be sure to check out her journal and her website for more information.

I myself am holding a discounted month for any DevArt member who wants an underbust to be completed in March. Just check out my journal for more info.

Waisted Space is busy as ever with his chainmail. Particularly my belt commission which is looking sexy!

So then, if any of our lovely members would like to make any suggestions as to the next steps for CorsetCrafters, feel free to do so. We are a very small community and I would love for us all to b alittle more interactive!

Hello everybody

Let me introduce myself. I'm Jane, I've been a member of this community since I discovered it last January and I would love to see it grow and thrive.

:iconwaistedspace: and :iconchasingrainbows: the founder and other moderator of this club are so busy in their day to day lives they asked for some help - I offered and they've taken me on board. Thank you.

I've been a dressmaker for more years than I care to think about and I've been making stays and corsets for eight years. I've worked from patterns taken for original corsets, commercially available patterns and I've drafted my own from scratch. There are so many styles to choose from and so many variations and so many ways to build a corset that in truth there are no real right or wrong ways to do anything. There are some things that work better than others, there are conventions to follow or to ignore - in the end what we attempt to make as corset crafters are corsets that do the job we (or our customer) want and at the same time looks the way we want it to and if that means not doing something the 'right' way then that's what we should do.

If you have questions on corsetry, components, construction, shapes, patterns or how to do anything please ask. Ask in the forums - you'll find people have different ideas, opinions and methods - all of them valid - some will work for you some won't but ask. Let's get this community growing and active.

Hi all.

Submissions
I want to give you all a massive apology for not updating the gallery sooner, I don't have the template and I have no idea what WaistedSpace is up to. I do however know that he has been busy with his chainmaille and such.

So I have put as many of the un-submitted work that was waiting to be submitted into the gallery, it just doesn't have a background is all.

I want to say a big thank you to all of you for your patience and perseverance with us. We aren't a large community (as much as I would love for that to be the case) so I don't quite know what to do with ourselves.

Contest
I have some bad news on this front. Although I have had some great submissions over the last few months, there is no enough entries for me to justify the £100 worth of prizes, which comes out of my money. I would love to be able to keep the contest running but it just gets a bit silly after 6 months. I would also love to be able to afford to pay for peoples materials as a prize but I can barely afford to keep afloat at the moment.

What I am going to do if take all of the contest submissions so far, and any ones that may come in at a later date and keep them in mind for the future. This isn't the end of contests here its just a short break while I pay off a bit more of my debt :)

A New Moderator is Needed
I have not discussed this with WaistedSpace, but I know he was looking for someone to deal with the submissions.

I am currently working a few extra hours at work to make ends meet and therefore I cannot dedicate as much time as I would like to the club. Plus I'm trying to get my little business up and running.

I would love for someone who has a little bit of time (only an hour or so a week) to send me a note offering to do this job. It is basically keeping the place up to date. I'll still be here to help out too. We need some innovative ideas and motivation.

Hi all.

Sorry for my absence. Things are getting busier for me now that I am trying to get my website together and samples made up. I can only apologise for the total neglect I have shown you all.

The contest deadline looms, and while I have had some great submissions there really isn't enough, so (frustratingly for us all) I am going to entend the deadline to Feb 1st. This will give you all a longer chance to get as many itens into our gallery as possible. Remember, as long as it is corset related and can fit into the artisan craft gallery, you can submit it. I am going to ask our lovely affiliates if they will judge this contest.

I am going to put a few pieces in myself, not because I want to win the prizes I am providing, but to get the numbers up, because the more you lot enter, the more prizes you will get. Don't forget to check out the forums to ask questions and seek advice.

I will update the gallery myself as Marc is incredibly busy so if you want to submit something that isn't in there let me know via note.

Sorry everyone for my absence around here! Jeez I feel so far removed from corsetry right now, I haven't even made one in almost a year now! I certainly haven't abandoned the art, and you all aren't far from my thoughts.

I've finally had a chance to submit your new works, and more importantly I have a new computer! Woo hoo! No more waiting 5 minutes to make each move in photoshop!!!

Things are getting busier by the day, and I'm afraid that I'll be just as lax in the future when submitting new corsets as now! So are there any photoshoppers in the group who would like to take on this responsibility? Just PM me if you'd like to and I'll send you the template via e-mail. Who will do the actual submission I will leave to Elle (I think a good way to go would be to upload the file to a photobucket/flickr account and let her do the submission...thoughts?)

Keep up the great work! I'm very impressed by the quality and creativity of submissions lately!! One day, sooner than later I hope, I'll add something of my own :aww:

There has been a lot of discussion over what the theme of the next contest should be and no-one seems to agree on one set idea. So.

The theme of this contest is going to be "Artisan Crafts"

I want you to make a "corset" from whatever you can get your hands on. It doesn't have to be a wearable corset. Therefore you can create anything as long as it fits into the Artisan Crafts gallery.

For those of you who aren't as obsessed with Artisan Crafts as myself, and don't know what Artisan Crafts covers, heres a list:

:bulletred: Custom Dolls (God knows what you could do for this, but I would love to see some ideas!)

:bulletred: Pumpkin Carving (for some reason)

You don't have to spend a fortune on creating a masterpiece. This contest is just about being creative and showing the world what you can do with your hands. So if you can't afford to spend a fortune on swarovski crystals and various woods (or whatever you want to use) then don't panic! Just go out and find replacements. If you live near a beach, go for a walk and pick up some shells.Theres plenty you cn do witht he things that surround you.

You will be judged on your creativity by myself.

This is a members only contest. So if you want to enter, feel free to join.

I want to see some great ideas, and some really wacky ideas.

Hi all, I hope you're all well and that you are all planning on entering something into our contest DEADLINE 15TH JUNE so far we have some really good entries which show just how talented our members are!

Depending on how well this contest goes I'll start planning another. I have some ideas but I think I'll open it up to a poll and see if I can get more people interested next time.

For more information just nip to the forum where you can ask questions or find answers... Feel free to start a thread about anything!

I'd like to see some more ideas about prizes and ways to fund future contests (there is a forum topic or five dedicated to both these subjects). I'll be generous with contest prizes so suggest anything.

Does anyone have any ideas on how we can get some team activites going or something... competitions (but not like contests) and the like.

Also, the subject of interviews came up a while back, would anyone be interested in being interviewed? If so send us a note saying so and I'll see if it can be sorted out :) You can also send us suggestions of who you'd like to see being interviewed and what questions you would like to see answered.

Don't forget; CorsetCrafters is here to bring all great artisans together, not just those of us who sew. It's also a place to find and share inspiration. So don't be shy!! Be active in our community!!

Tutorials
I ran up an underbust tut and an overbust tut which anyone and everyone is allowed to try out, let me know how it goes. Don't forget, making patterns requires a lot of patience and common sense, if something doesn't look right feel free to contact me through :iconchasingrainbows: I'll be happy to answer any questions.

So there are ten days left until the deadline for the greatest contest ever!

If you are stuck for ideas go to the forum and check out what other people are doing, this should hopefully inspire youre own creative juices. These corsets don't have to be expensive. They could be single layer non-front opening corsets that have been boned with plastic milk bottles if thats what you want to do! Its the creativity thats going to be judged not your level of skill or the materials you use.

You want this corset to explain itself. Does it resemble something piratey or something bird like?

If you want to enter but you've only just heard about this contest and don;t think ten days is enough, send a note, and if there are enough people wanting to enter I'll try and figure out a new deadline, but I want this to be fair to everyone.

Hi everyone. I hope you are all well and busy making corsets for this contest! I've been re-discovering the fantastic work of pattern production (yawn) and have started two new corsets! None of them are for the contest because I don't feel I should enter.

Tutorials
Ok, so I went ahead and drafter up some really rubbish looking tutorials. But I know for a fact that the underbust one works because I have made underbusts from it. They will be added to our tutorial section soon. The overbust one might take a lot of patience and thinking on your side, but it should work ok. Obviously those of you who don't need tutorials don't need to listen to this part of my ramblings :) but there has been a request previously for some tutes and some people have been looking for easy pattern production stuff... I understand why because ready made patterns are expensive and you cant really call what you make from them your own! But there we go. Contest

I guess this is a last ditch attempt to get people to enter, but please enter. Everything to do with the contest can be seen in the forum but I'll post it here too.

Pirates Life

A Corset that has anything to do with a pirates life, or what you would consider a priates life to be like. This can be anything from a pirate ship, a pirates treasure, a lady pirate or period clothing that you think relates to pirates, the Nelson era for example (post 1760 (ish) pre 1805), they all lived on boats - therefore a pirate of some kind (don't you love my logic?). Plus, there are all the famous pirates, old pirate films, new pirate films and Johnny Depp!

Consider embellishments, antique style lace, strpiey fabrics, unorthodox materials (wood, anyone?) or something completely out there. The aim of this contest is to be as creative as possible to the point of genius!

Birds of Paradise

When I wrote that as a theme I didnt mean look at one species of bird and turn it into a corset. The Bird of Paradise is also a species of flower. I meant originally, use your favourite species of bird ( a swan? raven? magpie? thrush? wren? flamingo? peacock? tucan?) and turn that idea into a corset. You dont have to use feathers, but you can if you like. Think about the pattern you use, does it have hip gores? would hip gores look bird like? What about quilting? Applique? embroidery? beads? ribbons? Just throw it on there, if it doesnt look like a bird to me Im not going to disqualify it, because this is your personal creation.

Write a small description of your corset, explaining what influenced you and why you chose to go the way you did.

Please can you include the CorsetCrafters Icon in your journal posts? Most of you do, and Ive been going through the member list making sure we have everyone who is a member on there! This helps me personally keep updated with all of your talented work, and dont forget to Submit any work corset related (artisan crafts only) to us so we can add you in our gallery.

Is in charge of the gallery because I'm rubbish when it comes to that, and he has been a bit busy, but bare with us and you'll see your work up soon!

I've added two new links in the Links section. One of which is a standard size chart for women. The sizes are uk sizes but obviously the measurements are universal really... I just thought I'd add it for those of you who make your own patterns or those of you who want to make your own patterns but don't know where to start.

As I said in the first Contest journal on April 2nd, the forum would be used primarily during the time the contest was being held. There is yet another new thread called Contest Update that I think entrants of the contest should read, the final prize list is up along with a thorough description of the themes.

I'd like to ask you all to start telling people about corset crafters, spread the word and the goodness of this club. For me this is because I want people to enter and enjoy the contest I set, especially since the prizes are rather fantastic(!!)

We have had a great new tutorial and would love to see more. Just send us a link to your tuts (obviously corset based tuts) and we'll put it up. (I'm planning and trying to make a "How to draft an overbust pattern from scratch" tut but its taking a lot of timedue to my new job and other commitments).

I'd also like to ask if anyone here has ventured into the art of neck corsets or wrist corsets? Jewelry or cloth? I personally would like to see a bigger variation of "corsets" here, but thats just me.

I hope I'm not driving you all mad with the spamming of journals, I'll relax much more when the contest is over and I get less paranoid :p

This is the first contest I am holding for CorsetCrafters and hopefully it wont be the last. I have had the last week or so to think about themes and such and I came up with the idea of having two themes. I'm kind of jumping in at the deep end here, so here goes.

As I mentioned, there will be two themes. Each of you can submit one design in each, or one design in one catagory but not in the other. You cannot enter more than one submission in one catagory.

The themes are:

Pirate Life

and

Birds of Paradise.

It is up to you what you do with these words. Be as creative as possible and dont hold back, but remember, the corset has to be comfortable to wear.

To enter your submission please call it "Contest: "name of piece"" and send the link in a note to Corsetcrafters. That way, everyone can see its a contest piece and then they might want to join in too!

Prizes are to be confirmed as I want them to be creative prizes and prizes are obviously the motivation to enter.

So far we have

1st: 1 year Sub to DA
2nd: 3 month Sub to DA
3rd: 1 Month Sub to DA

Voting will take place on May 15th. This gives you plenty of time to design and make your masterpiece/s and voting will be by the members of this club.

I will not close this contest officially until there are at least 20 Submissions, you may think thats a lot, but we have lots of creative members!

If you want to Join to enter or vote your are very welcome to, just hit the join button above this journal.

Now, the next stage of this contest is to head to the forum, where I am going to start three threads: Pirates Life, Birds Of Paradise and Prize Fund/Donations. Head there to share your ideas or to be inspired. If you have or plan to enter the contest I would like to see at least one post from you suggesting a prize so I can get more prizes to entice you :).

I hope you feel as excited about this as I do. If you have any questions or suggstions feel free to ask in the forum as I check it every day.

how serendipitous that we just broke the 6k mark as we welcome our new moderator! Both are a testiment to how much the club has grown in only a year!

Please welcome as the new moderator for our club. She's been with us from the beginning and is one of our more active members.

Things shouldn't change a whole lot around here, but hopefully we'll be a bit more streamlined now with 2 moderators. I'm going to continue handling the submissions and the layout (so you all have such useful features like corsets to click on instead of boring text links :D ). Chasingrainbows will be working to expand the club's functionality (ie more contests, get the forum going, etc...). Keep in mind that you can ask either of us any questions via note or forum - for all practical purposes we'll be doing the same things...just more of them and more often :)



In the near future you can expect to see more comprehensive links, tutorials, and book reviews pages, and 1 or 2 new features as well!

I've just noticed that we've had our first birthday recently! Figures I'd notice late (I've forgotten my own b-day before). We've come a long way in just a year, and exposed a lot of beautiful work and some great talents!

What's the goal for 2007? More of the same - keep spreading the word and get more people excited about corsetry!

I've been very busy the last couple of weeks, and it looks like I'll only be more so in the future. I need some help to keep our club in shining condition. CCC needs someone who can boost our member participation in the forum, put us out there in the DA community a bit more, and actively seek out resources (techniques, suppliers, etc...) for our members. Note me if you're interested.

if you're a photoshop phobic, don't worry :) I plan on still handling all the deviations and css/html related stuff.. My main concern is that we keep active, and don't let the community get stagnant. In the past, contests have been the major motivator, but we can only do so many contests. We need fresh ideas and some new enthusiasm, and I simply don't have the time/resources right now to keep up!

I'm going to be checking and updating around here a lot less for the next couple of weeks. I have an eye disease known as keratoconus, and I've had a couple flare-ups recently that tell me I need to slow down on the computer. It's nothing major, and I'll still update as often as I can, so don't feel like you can't submit anything. I just will be slower in adding them for the next couple of weeks while my eye heals up.

On another note, I've completed and mailed out the contest's prizes, so they should arrive sometime late this week :)

Janes-wardrobe and xecica: I'll need your wrist measurements and color choices for your dragonscale bracelets. You can view them here: [link] (see the bottom pic for colors). You don't have to take the dragonscale weave if you don't want to though - I'll make one in any weave you like. Here is a bunch of examples of the weaves available. Because I have colored rings in specific sizes only I can't guarantee I'll be able to do it in color. Just note me with the weave you'd like and I'll let you know :)

Janes-wardrobe: Since you've been at it for a while, I'm guessing a custom-drafted pattern won't exactly float your boat, so if you like you can have an alternate prize (sorry, nothing that involves me buying anything :aww:).

All my corsets are suitable for tightlacing, but if you don't need or want that level of shaping I offer "fashion weight" at a lower cost. The difference is less hardware and cotton duck cores rather than corset coutil. All patterns are custom-drafted.

I make to measure or to standard sizes, underbust, overbust, waist cinchers, historically accurate reconstructions or modern fashion wear. Most of my corsets are constructed using a combination of sprung steel boning and spiral wires. Historical corsets/stays prior to Victorian designs can be constructed using modern, synthetic walebone, steel boning or with period materials. I use a combination of custom drafted patterns and commercial patterns depending on budget constraints. My corsets are usually constructed using a base of cotton coutil.

Wow, I'm really impressed with the corsets that have been submitted! Since I started this club all of you have joined in with beautiful pieces - all of which deserve recognition.

Between the professionals and experienced amateurs who have great examples of pure craftsmanship, and the beginners who've shown their amazing creativity and desire to learn, every corset in our gallery is a reflection of the corsettiere's personality. I'd like to do 3 interviews of club members, and I'd like all of you to tell me who you'd like to see. Sort of like the voting format for our last contest (without the points structure), just send a note to me with the names of 3 members you'd like me to interview. If you have any specific questions you'd like to see, make sure to add them as well.

It's about time for another contest. As mentioned in an older journal I don't have the means to offer prizes myself (at least for another month or 2), but that doesn't mean the prizes have to be material in nature. Any suggestions or if anyone would like to donate something it would be much appreciated.

I've no structure in mind at the moment, but here's a few suggestions for themes:

category challenges (i.e. incorporate a particular item or concept into the corset such as birds, the color blue, unorthodox materials, etc...)

corset dresses (fully-functional corsets that end in a skirt rather than at the hip. Why? Because it seems like every corset dress I see is some fetishy, hobble-dress kind of thing. There's lots of creative ways to make one that's suitable for more than the "Rubber Ball"

specific styles (over/underbusts, Edwardian, sweetheart styles, period pieces, etc...)

the poor corsettiere (No money? No problem - who can make the best, most functional corset using the least amount of money?)

design challenges (themes like unconvential placement of lacing, using transparent vinyl, incorporating removable glow-sticks {an idea I had back in the day}, no busks allowed, corsets with cups, etc...)

:bulletpurple:I have added "buttons" to our page to hopefully make it easier to navigate. If you see any broken links or problems please let me know and I'll fix them.

:bulletpurple:New tutorials section! I've added one to help start us off and listed a few subjects that I think our community could use - If anyone wants to make a tutorial for one of these subjects send me a note and I'll add "under construction" for it so nobody accidentally doubles up! Use whatever format you like as long as it's easily readable. If you like, you can use the template I made for the "how to lace" tutorial. I did it in Photoshop and will send you the .psd file.

:bulletpurple: I've received a lot of great ideas for contests. I however don't have the time or funds to supply a prize, but if anyone has any suggestions or would like to donate something I'm sure we can get something going (the winner of our last contest should get her supplies soon - sorry for the wait since I'm an absent-minded space cadet ;) )

Patternmaking For Fashion Design. 3rd ed. 4th ed. now available

Expensive, but well worth it if you want to understand patternmaking. It has a great section on making slopers, working with stretch fabrics, and creating different styles. Very little actually has to do with corsetry directly, but the knowledge is invaluable for refining your technique. Downsides are that it assumes a certain level of knowledge (it's a textbook for fashion design school), and there is a rather large section on children's clothing that won't help corset-makers. Still, I've never been to design school, and after some trial and error managed to get around the more important concepts. I've learned more from this book than anything else.

The Little Corset Book
Author: Bonnie Holt Ambrose

A very brief introduction to corsetry. It shows the basic method of constructing corsets. It has a couple patterns that you can copy and enlarge, but they look more trouble than they're worth. Not bad if you're brand new to making corsets, but not really useful beyond that.

The Bra-maker's Manual
Author: Beverly Johnson

I haven't read this book, but want to. Reviews say it's the definitive book on bra-making. I imagine this book would be very helpful in learning how to draw bust curves - the most difficult part in drafting a corset pattern.

Waisted Efforts: An Illustrated Guide to Corset Making
Author: Robert Doyle

Another book I haven't read, but is well-known throughout the corset-making community. The general consensus is that it's for advanced sewers. Lot's of theory and alteration techniques that can be confusing without an instructor. Contains some history and a few patterns.

    To join: send us a note with your request and add us to your watch list. If you would like to submit any work, we will need your permission first. A statement in your note like "I give CorsetCrafters permission to display my art" will be fine. Please do not request in the comments box, it is unregulated and your request will likely be missed.

    Anyone can join, but only deviations with corsets as the central theme will be accepted. They also have to be an Artisan Craft. Some examples are:

    woodwork (carvings, marquetry, intarsia)
    pottery/glasswork/metalwork
    body art/abstract/food
    corset-like clothing (bustiers)
    jewelry


    Please no photographs/portraits/drawings - while there are some amazing talents out there, the goal of this club is to increase artisan crafters' exposure and promote the Artisan Crafts community as a whole. Members however may add any of these deviations to the favorites section. The favorites will be devoted specifically to these deviations.
