So, has anyone else seen the trailer for Jumper yet?

It's based on a really excellent book by Steven Gould of the same name, and it kind of has me irritated. I first read Jumper I think when I was 10 or 11, and it's always been one of my favorite books. It's a very interesting and compelling story. You should read it. And the sequel, Reflex. Also an excellent book.

Anyway, my problem isn't that I don't think Jumper should be a movie. My problem is that it shouldn't be THIS movie. The plot is completely different, and it doesn't leave room for the original's philosophy or moral themes. If you've read it, you should watch the trailer and tell me what you think. I mean, the fact that it's got Samuel L. Jackson is definitely a pro, but... well, I'm certain it'll be a good movie.

I'm equally certain it won't be my Jumper.

So I got online after school today, and I decided to hop on DA. I check my messages, run through new deviations, the usual drill. Then I go to take a look at the Daily Deviations - which is also my usual procedure.

Except not today.

Because today, Deviantart decided that 16 years old is not old enough to have control over the content filter - nevermind that I've been able to set it however I want since I joined. Nevermind that if I didn't want to see images involving nudity, I could always have turned it on and left it that way on my own initiative. Nevermind that I am old enough to drive - which means I am trusted with the kinetic energy equivalent of an old seige weapon, a machine which has claimed more lives than any other. I am not allowed to say for myself what content I am ready to see.

I'm really wanting to start swearing right now...
Oh wait. I'm only sixteen. I obviously don't know such vile words.

Aside from school, that is. That's going pretty well for me this year, how about you?

Anyway, I thought I'd replace the journal from going to Japan over the summer with a list of things I'm working on for art:

1. A fully digital illustration - doing the whole drawing, except for concept, with my tablet in OC. You can see a sketch for it in my scraps right now. Depending on how it turns out as a whole, I may wind up switching my main way of finishing drawings over from inking with pens to doing it digitally. Stay tuned.

2. A really huge fanart for Jet Grind Radio. I have some sketches for this, but I've put in on hold until I've finished number 1 - if that works out, I'll probably do this the same way.

3. Cloudriders redesigns - I'm reworking the character designs for Cloudriders somewhat. When I start drawing it again for real, I'll be starting by redoing the page I did last with the new designs, then go from there. Don't hold your breath.

4. Science Olympiad Banner and T-Shirt designs - just a reminder for me...

5. Personal T-Shirt designs - I've felt like having some unique t-shirts recently. They will probably be both random and offensive. More on this later.

kthxbai.

EDIT: the lines for 1 are up now...

Why the sudden change?

Because I won an award. As part of my Graphic design class at school, I entered the Greater St. Helens Graphics Competition ([link]). Yesterday, I found out that I took first place in the Logo Design category - taking home the first prize, a 6 by 8 Wacom Graphire.
(Proof:[link] )

So I should be doing some digital sketching, inking, and coloring in the near future.

Actually I got back 3 days ago, I just hadn't gotten around to putting up a new journal.

The cruise was ok, not great. I got some truly awesome-sauce photos of birds in Puerto Vallarta, Mazatlan, and on the ship, and some sweet sculptures in Puerto Vallarta as well. No photos from the third stop, Cabo san Lucas, because that was where I went scuba diving and there was no way I was risking my camera on that trip.

Anywho, it'll probably be a little while longer before I get any of those photos (or the sketches I did on the trip) because we're really busy in Graphic Design, which is when I usually sort my photos. The school Macs are much better than my craptop at sorting images.

Oh yeah, I got some cool shots of a rave onboard, too. And of the ultra-weird decor on the ship. You'll see what I mean.

Oh, and on a positive note, my uncle decided to stop by for a couple days. We didn't even know he was in the state, much less close by, and he's really cool and a lot of fun to talk to, so despite an overwhelming load of homework, I'm in a pretty good mood right now.

Trying to figure everything out has been really stressful - especially the narrow avoidance of being ripped off by one of those horrible Brooklyn internet dealers.

So, anyway, expect much photography from me in the near future.

Some of you know that I have long held that FFVII, while an excellent game, was also made by creeps. I have contended that, during the first encounter with Red XIII, Hojo was in fact attempting to get him to rape Aeris (Aerith, whatever). At last I have my proof: I found a page with a transcription of the dialogue.
From [link] :
"Aerith stirs in the tube. A lion-like creature rises through a hole in the floor. Aerith panics and runs around as the creature growls at her. Aerith bangs on the glass to Cloud.
Aerith: Cloud, help!
Cloud: What do you think you're doin'?
Hojo: Lending a helping hand to an endangered species... Both of them are on the brink of extinction...
Hojo: If I don't help, all these animals will disappear. "

Oh, yeah, almost forgot. The 24th was by birthday. twas fun.

Now that I've finished the poster I've been working on for graphic design, I'm finally free to... well... actually, we've already got another project in that class (which I'd be really excited about, since it's for a contest that I could win a tablet from, except that I've spent the last two days in there tweaking the nose on a dog I drew in adobe illustrator), and an exit requirement persuasive essay/research project in english...

Being me, I decided to take some in-progress pictures of it:

First, a picture of the frame:
[link]
It's made out of blue pine, and this picture was taken just after putting on a coat of sealant/oil/stain. There are 3 large holes on the back and one on each side for ventilation, and 4 smaller holes on the front. The light fixtures haven't been installed yet, because it needs to cure overnight first, but there're going to be two in the back and one on each side.

Next is just a picture of the polycarbonate surface, cut to fit on the top of the frame:
[link]
Funny story: I had my dad cut this instead of doing it myself because I was worried about cutting a material I'd never used for anything before, and it turned out to be a very good thing that I did, because the fumes/dust/whatever from it made me feel sick as heck and I had to run out of the woodshop while he was cutting it.

School. Argh.

I have like 8 drawings that are all halfway done but not getting any further than that for some time... It sucks... And my homework isn't going to be slacking off for another week or so... stupid AP classes, making us do double workload for the first two weeks to catch up with the schools that start and end their year earlier... Ugh.

apologies to , it's already been almost a month since I agreed to our art trade, and I still don't have it... sorry...

I guess the silver lining to all of this is that several of those drawings are looking very promising... not that that's a particularly thick or bright lining...

ACRYLIC FOR MY LIGHT TABLE! w00t!
I've been wanting to build a light table for tracing, inking, and animating for a while now, and today I finally made it down to TAP Plastics to pick up the surface. I got a 24" by 16" by 3/16" piece of white acrylic for $20. Next step is to get lights for it... then I get to put it all together in my dad's woodshop.

... I want to ride my bike!

I've outgrown my old bicycle in the last year, so in the last month my parents and I have been going through a bunch of bike shops looking for a new one - which I finally got today! yay! I've actually had the seat on my old bike extended well past the maximum extension mark for some time now, so this I'm really excited to be on a bike that's the right size. Well, kind of the right size - we bought a bike that I'm going to need to grow into. My parents said that it was going to be the last bike they bought me, so I need it to last me as long as possible - which is why, after being told that a 15 inch bike would be the perfect fit for me, I went with a 19'' based on one thing: I was told by the clerk that a 17 inch bike was intended for people up to a height of 5'9'', and I'm hoping to grow more than 2 inches before I top out.

That post came out way longer than I'd expected... ^^

The first page of cloudriders is up.

And there was much rejoicing. Well, on my part anyway. The reason behind the rejoicing is that I was able to draw a new 2nd page to replace the one that became page 1 today. I was planning on having 3 pages ready by today and up by thursday or friday, but I decided to go for quality over quantity - my first idea for page 1 sucked big time. This one was going to be page 2, and page 3 was going to be 4. As of now I have the next page mostly done, but the new page 3 is hardly even started - don't expect it before sunday...

Especially because I picked up Guilty Gear DS yesterday. Not the best game ever, but it's a lot of fun, and the art is just beautiful. I wish it made some slightly better use of the touchscreen, because it's only used in battle as an extra button for activating power ups. It's not exactly deep, and the story mode is pretty short, but with 20 characters to play through with it should last a while. I just wish some of my friends had it - The multiplayer would be a lot of fun, but everyone has to have the cartridge. The minigames will just have to be enough until it comes down in price and I can convince someone else to buy it, I guess. Good thing there are seven of them.

I mean cartooning.

One of the things that I am most likely to do, especially when I'm bored, is start a new comic/manga/cartoon/thing. And that is what I'm doing. Cloudriders will be my forth (or maybe fifth, I've kinda lost count at this point) attempt at starting a comic. Really, I should be updating one of my older, more developed ideas instead - but then I'd have to decide which of the three that I've still got the first few pages for to work on, and that just doesn't sound like fun to me.

Expect page one tomorrow or the day after. The first chapter will be an intro, backstory on the universe for the first few pages, then character introduction, etc.

In the last few days I've gone rather crazy with putting up me stuffs. There is, in fact, a good reason for this - and that is that this morning I got my wisdom teeth out, and I'm going to be completely out of it for probably the next two days at a minimum. I wanted to get as much of my recent stuff up before then so I wouldn't forget, and I managed to scan and upload all but 3 or 4. Yay me.

Also, having your wisdom teeth out is not fun. Probably the best part about it is being under general anesthetic for the operation, because that way you a( don't feel it, and b( get to go back to sleep for a few hours. My operation was at something like 9:30 or 10:00, maybe a little later, and I slept until around 2:00 this afternoon. At this point, my gums are in a lot of pain, and I can't feel my lip (it's like it's numb and asleep - my was like that for a while too, but it recovered an hour or two ago), and I can't eat anything solid or hot. I've been drinking a smoothie with a spoon to avoid spilling it cause of my numb lip, jello, and a small amount of mased potatoes (which was a mistake, becuase I started trying to chew it - chewing = bad for sutures in you gums).
