Lots of you know that I'm into contact juggling. On one of the boards I frequent, a peer posted that the area of London called Covent Garden, a world famous site for street performers (musicians, jugglers, acrobats, comedians, etc) where many great performers got their start (Eddie Izzard anyone?), has recently changed managerial hands.

The new owners want to restrict and cut down on the amount of time for performances as well as the number of people. This sort of move could choke the life out of a vital performing arts proving ground in the long term, as well as have disastrous financial consequences for full time performers in the short term.

Please read the below letter.

The new owners of Covent Garden are bringing in radical changes to reduce the number of performances on their property. These changes are being put in place without any consultation and given with only 17 days notice.

In the North Hall - they have decided to cut the length of the shows by a quarter and bring in 30min gaps between each performance.

Similar reductions are being introduced for courtyard used by the classical musicans.

This will make it much harder for all of Covent Garden's street performers to survive and make it much less likely any new talent will emerge from one of the worlds most famous street performing pitches.

The University welcomes The Congress of Jugglers!

Bless mom! She called me and I checked it out.

Free!! So I went yesterday and spent five hours playing around with a bunch of really wonderful, complete strangers.

There were only a few people there (out of the 80 or so) who had CJ balls, but I zeroed in on the two who did and dug out my acrylics. Not long into that, they went out and fetched a huge, thick blanket from their car for us to practice over, because the floor was hardwood. We attracted a few people.

Maybe an hour or so after that, they all left to get lunch, but left me with the blanket. By the time they came back, I had about five people sitting around me trying out moves with my toys. Very Happy

I even got some lessons on toss juggling from this thirteen year old kid whose aunt is a clown. There were some amazing people doing amazing things - ball tossing, ring juggling, pin juggling, bounce ball juggling, bull whip cracking, people playing with diablos and devil sticks, there was even a unicycle hocky game going on and people juggling things to each other over a volleyball net!

At one point, most of my new friends had wandered off, and a guy with a tv camera drifted over and asked if he could film me for a tv show they were making about the congress of juggling for local cable access, so I said yes. Hee!

I had the best time. I even found out where the college jugglers are meeting, and even though they have no cjers, I think I'll go hang out with them some and see how long they resist wanting to learn. It's hard to resist the siren song of the sparkley balls.

Real Life is snarfing my brain. I just don't have any spare braincells for modding in #Thumbsshare right now.

Even though the ability to share thumbs is down at the moment due to some glitch or other, I want to encourage people to spend time in #ThumbsShare because it's still a great place to look at people's work (by clicking on their names in the userlist to the right of the chat window) and to discuss what you see.

There's some fantastic people who hang out there.

Hey guys. Thanks for all the support. We really appreciate it.

Yesterday, we spent the whole day with Sophie. Husband took her for a long walk (a.k.a. hobble, sniff, hobble, sniff sniff, pee, hobble) around the neighborhood. Then we took her out for a drive and to say hi to friends. We took her to the lake for more walking (hobbling) and she got to see geese and seagulls and sniff bird poop. We went for a longer drive and she got to eat a couple chicken nuggets from Wendy's.

It was amazing. She was still clearly not well, but she was in SUCH a great mood. She ate like two pounds of cooked hamburger and even played a little with her blue plush piggy. We took some pictures and some video. She slept like a rock.

Today was harder. She suddenly seemed frailer than ever. She had some of the black squirty runs, nearly fell down the two steps to the grass in the back yard, and just wanted to lay with her head in my lap until mom picked us up to take us all to the vet.

Our vet is super cool and so are the people who work for him. They really came through for us. The actual procedure wasn't as horrible in reality as I pictured it...the thousand or so times I've thought about it in the last year. When they gave her the sedative first, she snored. A lot. And the release when they gave her the second shot was so gentle, I missed it.

I'm not happy, but I am happy. It's really weird.

Anyway, now we can finally get on with the process of grieving and healing and appreciating the things that really mattered about the whole relationship.

Above is a picture of Sophie, the best dog I have ever had. My husband and I rescued her from an american military stray facility when we lived in Germany, back in 2001. She'd been abandoned there three times in a two year period. I swear, some people do not deserve animals.

But we took her home and she's been ours since then. We've had a lot of problems with regards to her health. It is clear that she was a puppy mill dog, because she's got nearly every congenital problem a female rottweiler can have, minus hip displasia. We even had to have her back knees rebuilt with titanium and four screws each at a specialist clinic in Bretzenheim. It was all worth it, because her legs worked for a lot longer than they should have.

Sophie has the friendliest, brightest, most easy going, fun-loving spirit. It's really amazing how upbeat she is after everything she's been through. This last thing though...it's really hard because her spirit and her personality are still intact, but her body is rotting out from under her. Her legs fail her and dump her on the floor without warning. She can't get up and down without help (this is recent in the last two weeks), her mouth doesn't grip food like it ought and it's hard for her to eat. This is not living. She doesn't even play anymore.

So, on Saturday, we're going to take her to the vet and have them put her to sleep. I promised her that I would sit with her while they do this. I just hope I don't chicken out. I think that would be one abandonment too many.

I would consider it a personal favor if, those of you who have animals you love, give them a hug for me and think of us, Sophie, my husband and myself, on Saturday.

So, yeah, I had jury duty today. Gahhh. I had to wake up at 5:30 am in order to get to the Court House by 7:30 am.

This is the second time I've been to this court for jury duty, but the last time, I was excused without having to serve. This time, however, I got nailed, and Oh My God...what a weird day.

First of all, the prosecuting attorney looked like he should've been a middle eastern underwear model - he was long and slim in his dark blue suit with sculpted cheekbones, shining black hair, large dark eyes and graceful hands. Gorgeous.

To make matters worse, the defending attorney was about six feet four inches of vibrant caucasian - broad shoulders, narrow hips, short, chestnut hair and ooooh he was smart. Bright eyes, intelligent questions, commanding presence.

Hell, the DEFENDANT was hot. Short, athletic black man - bald head, elegant facial features, skin the color of deep espresso coffee, black suit, lean and built like someone who spends time on his body.

Then the case started and we learn the defendant is there because he was walking up a major road, against traffic, in his underwear. I shit you not. There I was, front row center, with the Exotic Middle Eastern Underwear Model-esque prosecutor talking about another man walking out in public in his underwear.

Basically it boiled down to the defendant had a fight with his girlfriend and stormed out of her house in a tank top, an unbuttoned shirt, and his boxers. The bitch of it was, when the cop asked him to get off the road, he ignored him, which got the cop to pull out his baton and shove the guy over the guard rail.



This case just blew. The defendant ended up getting arrested by five cops because, once he'd been pushed, he came back and hit the cop which got him smacked and in a tussle with the first cop and a second cop, and then a *third* and *fourth* cop, with the fifth cop shooting the guy with a Tazer. Yes it was all very stupid.

But it got *really* amusing when the defending attorney, during cross examination, kept asking each and every cop if they had used his/her 'ASP baton' on the defendant....however...if said out loud, it TOTALLY sounded like ASS BATON! So during cross examination and redirect, we have both hot attorneys asking the cops how and when they shoved and or hit the defendant with their ass batons.

I thought I was going to die.

The prosecutor was clearly a very green attorney and his case sucked. The defending attorney objected all over the place and kept getting sustained by the Judge (who's Judicial robe was bright purple. Somewhere there is a gospel choir missing that robe). The State rested before lunch, and after lunch, we had to sit in the Jury Room (i.e. narrow shoe box with a table and chairs) for an hour and a half. It was looking like we'd have to come back tomorrow, but apparently there had been a bunch of legal jousting in court without us, and the defendant was acquitted.

I'm glad he was, because it was clear there was excessive force used. He hadn't been terribly bright at the time, but he hadn't done anything at all that deserved getting smooshed by five cops, plus getting tazered.

When the Judge released us, we walked on out of the court, and the defended smiled at me like I'd personally saved his life. He thanked us (not that we'd done anything). On my way out, the Super Hot Defending Attorney looked right at me and stopped talking to his witnesses. He came over and asked me if I'd had fun. I told him it was very interesting, but I was glad to not have to come back. He kept smiling at me and telling me that I was off the hook for three more years, and I left. Dunno why he thought he needed to talk to me, but damn...SO HOT!!!



And so, my children, this is why Jury Duty isn't always bad. The end.

I'm really kind of proud of how much work I do on the books. The novels are in scary condition, writing-wise, as you know if you've read some of my other journals pointing out the Freakishly Bad Weirdness I've found there. On this website, you can listen to short little examples from each book and I find them terribly amusing.

My favorites so far have been:

Mack Bolan #99 Circle of Deception (high unintentional slash factor. A friend and I listened to this one and had a total blast, especially because one of the female actors comes on with a sexy voice at the end of each disc and says, "Time to reload". My friend almost fell of the sofa laughing.)

Destroyer #111 Prophet of Doom (A Remo Williams novel, and I actually *enjoyed* listening to the recording even though I knew how it would turn out. The actors are great to listen to and it's a decent action story with some creepy mystical stuff. The only bad thing about this was how the story Totally Fucked Up the persona of Apollo, yes, the greek god, and turned him into a really nasty, evil satan image. Now, I blunted this as best I could, but there was no fixing all of it. Just pretend it's someone else.)

and

Outlander #7 Ice Blood (because you don't have to know anything about the series, and it's got the Rasputin Penis Pendant in it. The one with the wooden phallus and the crystal testicles that the villain 'strokes for strength' I shit you not. *snicker*) It's *highly* entertaining.

The number one book I can't WAIT to hear is First Mountain Man #3 Absaroka Ambush (due out in January) because its got a *VERY* sweet (and implied hot) friendship between a Delaware Indian man named Steals Pony (young, smart, brave, educated, sense of humor, wild side) and a mountain man named Ring (reckless, cheeky, young, brave, friendly).

For the love of god, they end up waltzing together in a clearing. Yes, I put them together, but the waltzing scene where all the mountain man start dancing together in the moonlight for no apparent reason was THERE before I got the script. ^_^

These are side characters, but they kept me sane while working on this one. It's about Preacher (Our Hero) leading a wagon train of 150 women to the west. It's an action book, so there's tons of death, but I dug out the worst of the crap and misogyny and turned it into, I think, a very entertaining six hours worth of audio play. Especially because the love interest for Our Hero I totally overhauled into something charming and brave and believable rather than shrill, spoiled, and feminazi-esque. Preacher should be glad I look out for him like that.

The only warnings I have to give are that ALL of these books are VIOLENT. Lots of guns. Lots of shooting. Lots of Death. In the First Mountain Man book, there's lots of references to rape. That series is bad that way. I cleaned out a lot of it, but there's still some. There is one scene where you hear a woman screaming as the scene fades out. All of these books are rated MA for mature audiences for language, violence and sexual situations.

Now, by audio play, this means there's a full cast and music and sound effects, not one person reading into a mic trying to do all the voices. If any of you folks decide to get these books, remember, I DO NOT earn any more money for them. I get paid a flat rate and I have received my money already. I'm telling you about these because: 1) I'm pretty proud of these. They aren't brain surgery manuals, but they are entertaining 2) I want to promote the company that pays me so they can keep doing it. ^_~ and 3). if any of you folks listen to these, and like them, I would really LOVE it if you would send in a review to the company. If they end up on the website, that would really butter my muffin! <3 (

We're back from our trip to California and Nevada (Las Vegas). We had a great time noshing on GOOD mexican food and seeing our families. Thanksgiving was *remarkably* family drama -free this year. I mean, scary relaxed. O.O;;

We left Sophie (the ancient and BONE thin rottweiler) at the vet for observation while we were gone. She seems in good spirits, but she's still really bone thin. I know, I know, she's a million years old. Oh well, at least she's happy and promptly shed ten pounds of hair on my clothes the minute she saw me. Ah, puppy luff.

Anyway, while I was in California, I took a side trip to Dr. Bob's magic shop and got three new balls - two purple 65mms and one orange 70mm. The purple ones are a really red purple. Sort of a rosy plum. So pretty! The orange ball...whooooo.... Sara, you were right I had to get this one. It's a rich orange, like the sunset gets right before the color bleeds away to night. Really nice.

Dr. Bob even opened the shop for me ON THE DAY IT WAS SUPPOSED TO BE CLOSED !!! How nice is that?? I felt bad, though, because after I got there, I found out he was having trouble at the bank because someone was forging checks using his business number and using them to buy crap at the Gap and stuff. e.e;; Also, it turns out, the store front is to sell magic tricks like for stage magicians as well as being a fully functional Botanica for those of the Latin American bruja traditions. Nice stuff. And the shop smelled so good...incense. <3

So, this meant the contact juggling ball business is supposed to be strictly mail order. >.<

Despite all that, Dr. Bob let me into the back rooms and sold me my new toys *and* showed me some of the new items their working on. He had sample balls that were SO cool. One was sherbert orange, and solid, but it charged under regular light and, when you turn the lights off, it glowed safety cone orange. Hee.

The drive to Vegas wasn't bad, but that meant I was computer-less for four days. Horrors! Even worse, when we checked into the hotel/casino someone stole my cell phone. >.< Dammit! I had videos on there of my dog playing and my niece at an aquarium...and I had most of my important phone numbers on there...and there was a little dangley on the top that was a charm a friend of mine brought back for me from Bejing. I have lost track of her...so there goes that little memento. e.e; *sigh*

So the cell phone theft sucked, but everything else went so well, I'm trying really hard to not be bummed out by it.

Hey gang!

So, where did contact juggling come from? Well, like most things, it grew out of what came before it and was changed by the people's creativity, both in the actual art forms and in the creation of new toys for them to play with.

About twenty years ago, Michael Moschen, a very accomplished object manipulator/juggler, put together a show called 'Light'

From the perspective of someone who is recently into contact juggling (me), I can say that this show has stood the test of time and looks as beautiful and as magical today as it did then. It doesn't look dated at all, even when you learn how to do some of these amazing moves.

Anyway, I first discovered Moschen's art, like most people have, through the movie "Labyrinth" that was put out by Jim Henson and starred David Bowie () and a very very young Jennifer Connely. One of the things I've been talking to people in ThumbsShare chat about a lot lately is to consider cropping, framing, and various other techniques to get to the heart of their image and to give it a truly finished, polished look.

Sometimes, doing any or all of these things doesn't just polish up an image, but can radically change the feel and tone of what is presented. It doesn't even have to mean that one image is better than the other, just really different. If the artist shows these different permutations in their gallery together, I think it shows their range in a way that not many other things can. How many things can you say with the same raw material image?

My example of this today is from ~BrokenWrld

In my opinion, all of these images are effective - so it isn't a better/worse thing - but they all 'tell' something different, even in thumbnail, but in Full view, the effect far stronger.

Folks, if you go to ThumbsShare...think about what you're doing. It's ThumbsSHARE, not ThumbsLOOKATMYWORKANDTALKTOMENOWDAMMITOR I'MGOINGTOPOUT.

Seriously.

Don't come to #thumbsshare and say not a word to anybody while throwing your art up on the screen every five minutes. That's not about sharing. That's not about being bright and interested in other people's work. That is about not showing any sort of willingness to take the time to give some decent feedback to someone else.

I'm not talking about something as vapid and thoughtless as, "hey nice pix".

Artist, please.

Here's a small tip - you have to give to get, you reap what you sow.

If you take the time to look, and I mean click on the thumbnail and really look, dammit!, at someone else's piece and then say, 'Hey, (insert name here) I like this, this and this about your piece. To make it stronger, you might try x, y and z. :

Is that really so flippin' hard???

This is actually about any part of DA, either the chats or the forums or even your own page. Reach out and see what kind of power you have to help someone else.

So, people, (and you know you who are ) Stop being such selfish attention whores who want something for nothing. Get your hands out from under your asses and type some decent feedback to people who's art catches your eye, either for good reasons or because they've made some errors in execution and you, Yes YOU my friend, can see where they could improve.

Help an Artist out, because maybe the next Artist helped out will be you.

At five thirty, it sounded like WAR had started. A mass of rapid, possibly gunfire, sounds errupted yanking Husband, Dog and I from our well earned rest. Dog went hysterical, of course. Husband ran to the window.

Husband: "Oh my god, there's some idiots out front shooting fireworks at each other...

Me: "Crap. Should I call 911?"

Husband: "Yeah."

So, I did. I'm looking out my front window on the phone to 911 emergency when the Idiots, one in a black teeshirt wearing a really bad, blond sk8tr mohawk and one with brown hair in a white shirt almost down to his knees and some droopy black sk8tr shorts, ran across the street shooting Flairs and Roman fucking candles at each other. Green and gold and red and silver sparkles, which I would normally find quite lovely zinged through the air, hitting the road, some bushes, etc. The pale, morning air was thick with exploded firework smoke and the stench rolled through our open windows.

And there's tweedle twink and tweedle twonk laughing like the wingnuts they are as they run behind some garages where they happily set off something that sounds like a grenade.

BOOM!

Dog: "BARKBARKBARKBARKBARK!! *GASP*BARKBARKBARK!"

Right then, a cop car pulled up and the Idiots ran across the street toward my house, still with fireworks exploding in their hands. A green, blazing pinwheel thingy streaked right across my front yard, less than ten feet from my door, and plowed right into my day lilies. A red thingy went into the neighbor's bushes.

I was worried about fire, but there was none.

I did hear the cop reading them the riot act because they wouldn't tell him their names at first and wanted to know what they had done wrong.

Cop: "Fire works are illegal in this county! Not to mention at 5:30 in the morning in THIS town. If one of those had gone into my car there would have been some real trouble, now tell me who you are or I'm hauling you in."

To my intense disappointment, they must have caved and spilled their guts because, about ten minutes after that the Idiots wandered off and the cop drove off.

This'll be in the police blotter for sure next week.

As an aside: I have recently, in the last week or so, gotten TOTALLY FSCKING HOOKED on a JRock band that no longer exists. Malice Mizer was a Visual Kei band in Japan and their look, during the era of Gackt as the lead singer, was very High Gothic Romance with a liberal dash Cute/Kinky.

Now, I want it clear that I tried VERY HARD to avoid getting into this. Just like I tried VERY HARD to avoid getting hooked on Ouran Host Club anime, and almost for the same reason. The Fangirls. omfg. Rabid fangirls are a blight on the face of creation.

Anyhow, I started listening to some of Malice Mizer's stuff on YouTube and was shocked at how much I like it. I'm especially in love with their single, Ma Cherie~Itoshii Kimi E~, which I cannot get a legal copy of for less than nearly $30 imported. So, I'm not getting it.

The sad thing about finding a band I like so much in this instance is that they are broken up with no plans on ever reforming. I feel like I missed a party. And even worse, the very talented and beautiful drummer, Kami, died of some sort of brain hemmorage a while ago. I saw a really gorgeously created MySpace page set up as a memorial for him and it made me sad. I doubt the guy was even 30 years old. What a waste.

Omgomgomg!! I was laying on the floor petting my dog, thinking about the surgery she's scheduled for tomorrow and worrying about if she will survive it...and I notice the open wound on her leg (the reason for the surgery) looks...different.

I rolled her over and looked closer. OMG...it's nearly healed!!

I called the vet and they said to skip the surgery and just see how it goes!!



If she continues on this way, this saves us - Weeks of pain and suffering for the dog (or possibly her life. She's old enough that any surgery is a Dangerous Idea), and nearly $1,200!!

Yay! Yay! Yay!

What a good dog!!

It seems to me that the terms of friendship are frequently taken for granted, and are not discussed ahead of time. Maybe they shouldn't be, would that be to artificial? I don't know. Maybe it would keep people from assuming that the people they are friends with value things the same way, or understand what things mean.

Imbalance is bad. Surely there should be an even distribution of give and take, but that so frequently doesn't seem to be the case. There are ebbs and flows, ups and downs...people are on different parts of the labyrinthine path of their lives, but still...

Assumptions are bad, but in the absense of data, what else can there be?

Just thinking. No, I'm not going to explain myself. Just needed to verbalize, even if it is in such an odd way. I'll finish out the color series later.

Purple is next, followed by a Monsterously Huge Black and White blowout. That's the one I'm *really* waiting for. I finally had to force myself to stop adding deviations. It's already probably too big.

I hope you enjoy it, even so. There are so many tremendously talented people on this site.

So...the hole in Sophie's leg skin hasn't healed. It just appeared one day along her old surgery scar. I'm telling you guys, this back right leg of hers has been a major problem. She's had three or four surgeries on it so far...I've lost count.

Our vet thinks that her body is rejecting the titanium plate that is bolted to her leg bone under her skin. So, the vet has to go in and remove it. He says she doesn't need it anymore anyway. It was just there to hold her leg together after her knees were rebuilt. Most vets leave the plates in for the rest of the animal's lives and it isn't a problem. He says that about 2% of dogs who have surgery that involves plates like this, at some point, their bodies just say, "OUT!".

I'm not surprised in retrospect because, when the incompetent army vet butchered her leg the first time, they closed the surgery with staples, not stitches. And it took FOREVER to heal. She even developed a huge reservoir of fluid under her skin...which burst one night all over the floor. I figure we drained more than a pint of watery, bloody yuck out of her leg that night.

Later, when she had more surgery on both back legs, the German vet used fiber sutures and she healed up at a miraculous pace with no, gross, fluidy experiences.

The trick to this surgery, forgetting the fact that it will cost well over $1,000, is that she's OLD. The dog is somewhere between 13 and 15 years old. The anesthetic alone could kill her.

We don't have a choice because we can't let her wander around with an open, weeping wound that leaves her muscle layer open to the air. I just hope she tolerates the surgery. Poor, old girl. I really hoped she wouldn't have to have any more of this in her life, but as the doctor says, she's walking better than she has in years, the new pain meds have relieved her arthritis, she's bouncy and happy and playing with her toys and terrorizing the squirrels in the yard. As long as she has quality of life, we'll do what we can.

I can't tell you how much I love this dog.

Surgery is on Tuesday next. All warm thoughts, energy streams and prayers are appreciated.
