Just a quick hello.

My daughter Elise, turned two a little while back, how time flies!

I do hope you are all out there still enjoying your photography and art, and my apologies that I have negleted DA for a while.

Just a quick word though, some people have been using my photography for designs/artwork etc without asking permission first. May I remind you that I consider this as theft!

90% of the time when people ask, I am more than happy to grant permission, but there are some peices that I really dont want to be used. I really dont want to have to remove my work from DA, or to have to watermark, but if it continues I will!

Got a holiday coming up very soon, so hope to be able to answer your messages, and have some exciting new works to put up.

Been rather busy lately, so sadly not got any photography done recently.

Bought a TomTom One which is a great little gadget, definately helps someone like myself, who is bloody awful with directions!

The little one (Elise) is growing up SO quickly, and can now sit up by herself, and she has starting saying Daddad, which is so sweet. She has a bit of an eye infection at the moment, so I have had to get up at 2am to clean her eyes.

She has also started playgroup, so its nice for her to interact with other children.

Anyhoo, my apologies for not being around recently, and I am sorry I havent had a chance to comment on everyones photography as much as I would have liked.

Interesting to note a couple of things..... no longer using Compact Flash cards. It has live view.
Kit comes with the Image Stabalised lense as on the 40D.

My lovely missus has treated me to an early birthday pressie! woohoo!

I am now the proud owner of a Zen Vision M 60GB, and it has a feature which I wasnt aware of.

You can actually link it up to your camera, and download the pictures straight to the player. Thus eliminating the need for a data bank when out on a shoot.

With a battery life of around 14hours, there is little danger of it going flat on you either. It is almost certainly slower at downloading than a dedicated machine, but what the hell!

By the way, if anyone knows of a good site that I can download Movies/TV programs/Funnies etc, I would be very gratefull.

Good news the PC has now arrived, and it is working swimmingly!

Had a minor glitch of it freezing intermittenly from time to time, but a quick change to the SATA Drive configuration had that one sorted in around 10minutes (quite why Dell cant work this out and continue to sell them badly configured is beyond me, but hey!)

CAMERA NEWS

Just recently finally got around to buying a flash gun for the camera, complete with Sto-Fen diffuser, so might actually get some reasonable indoor shots now!

!!!I'M GONNA BE A DADDY!!!

The missus is due to deliver our new package on August 5th!

Pretty scared as it will mean I have to grow up a little. AND bang goes my plans to buy a Lotus Elise next year.....

I need some ideas on names, so if you can help, it would be great!
As I was going to get a Lotus Elise next year, I have been given permission to name the baby Elise if it is a girl....however, not sure what to call it if its a boy, I want something Car related, but so far Dino, and Jenson have been rejected.

So any ideas of car related names for a boy?

Its running Vista as an OEM OS as well.

So now, all I have to do is get some sort of desk, and a screen and I am up up and away!

I will see how it runs, it should be pretty quick, but I may toy with the idea of a couple more gigs of RAM later on down the line.

So again, my apologies for being a little scarce on DA recently, but I promise I will be back with avengence soooon!

Some of you guys out there have awesome galleries with animal, photography from the wild, and/or captivity, so to many of you, this may be teaching you to suck eggs (thats an English expression of try to teach somebody what they already know by the way! )

Anyway,, all I am doing here is sharing a few bullett points of things which i have been taught, and picked up over the years.

Feel free to add yours if you wish, and I hope these basic tips may help some people

> Check your gear the night before

Nothing worse than getting to a photoshoot with a low battery, or full memory cards! so make sure all your batteries are charged, and take a spare. Also make sure your memory cards are free of images.

Clean all your lenses the night before. If you leave it to when you get on site, for the DSLR users out there, there may not be a convenient place to do this. So take no chances.

> Get level with the eye

When you are with the animals, always get to eye level (where possible). Sometimes this may mean laying or kneeling in mud, so its a good idea to wear old cloths, and maybe even leaving a change of cloths in the car!

> Get focused on the eye

Always focus on the eye, if you have a camera that has a centre focus point, you can always reframe after focusing, but always make sure the eye is the part in focus.

> Think about the environment you are in

For me, I like to eliminate any man made structures that may be in view. So if you taking the picture in a captive environment, spend some time walking round the enclosure, and then choose your spot carefully where the background wont show any man made structures. I tend to do this, then be patient and wait for the animal to walk past this spot and then take my shot.

If this isnt possible, then (if you have the equiptment) zoom right in, and maybe settle for a nice portrait!

>For 'F's Sake!'

Choose a low 'F-Value' this widens the apperture of the camera, and will shorten the depth of field. What this means in reality, is, the subject you focus on, will be in focus, and the background will be out of focus. This in turn makes the animal pop out of the screen/print making for a more pleasing image.

>Think about the frame

When taking a picture of an animal walking, running, or even staning with a side profile, this about negative space, that is, an area that the animal can move into. It will balance the picture more, and make for a more pleasing image. If the frame is close against an animals nose tip, the picture will feel somewhat claustophobic.

> Tripod/monopod

For me, a monopod is a handy device which I carry everywhere (in fact, it stays in the boot of my car, so its always ready) I love tripods for lower light photography, but for me, they are too bulky for work with animals. I always opt for the monopod. Not always useful on a shoot, but easy to pop to one side if you have to get lower than it will allow, and a lot easier to carry around than a bulky tripod! (othersmay disagree with this part )

> Digital Zoom

Agh, dont get me started! OK Some people may have digital zoom on their cameras, I know my point and shoot cameras do. TURN IT OFF! they are a waste of time.

With digital zoom, the camera will zoom into the pixels, now your computer will obviously do a better job of cropping a picture than your little camera can. Turn it off and forget about it, always just use optical zoom, and crop the picture on your PC after if you feel the need to.

> Check your pictures

Once you have taken a few shots, and if your camera allows it. Check your pictures. Zoom in to the eye to ensure they are nicely focused. Its very difficult to check for good focusing without zooming in to the preview, so if your camera allows it, make sure you do as what can at first seem a pleasing image, may turn out to be a little out of focus.

>Be prepared

OK this may seem silly, but it has served me well.

Sadly no, they werent, in the UK (which is where I live!) we do not have any wild wolves left.

However, I am lucky enough to have a wonderful wolf sanctuary fairly close to where I live.

He was 16, and had diabetes, which he faught and beat!
He then had kidney problems, which he put up a fight for, but then the diabetes worsened.

We (my good lady and I) made the decision to put him to sleep as he was having trouble walking, and was losing weight rapidly. We told the vet that money was no option, and whatever needing doing we would do, but sadly, we had exhausted all possible solutions, and to carry on would just be cruel.

Gone but not forgotton.

Hi All,

Apologies if I havent replied to people, or commented on their work.

I am trying my best to get round this, but I seem to be getting more and more problems with this site!

I would love to hear if others are having the same issues.

If I try and comment on a picture, send a note, or visit a page, I (more often than not now) get page can not be displayed coming up.

I have done the following to try and remedy this issue:

Delete Cookies.

Delete Temp files.

Delete Browsing history.

Tried using Firefox.

Still I am getting the same issues, and it is really bugging me, as I love DA, but, this is winding me up!!!!!!!

Trying to do anything on DA now is around 10 times slower than when I was on dial up!

If anyone can suggest anything to ease my pain, I will be grateful, and let us know if you are getting the same issues.

It doesnt have an MOT (the passenger door handle doesnt work, and I cant work out how to fix it, other than that, she is pretty much perfect), but it has got 6month tax, I'll even throw in the CD player.

God I feel old.....bah!!

PLUS my good lady is cooking me my favourite meal tonight....

The smell, sights and sounds were simply breathtaking.

If there are any petrol heads out there, you have to visit this place next year!!!!!

Maybe we could have a DeviantArt meet there? Let us know if your interested......
