Up for a new challenge?

Hey kids..!

Ready for October's monthly challenge? How about an autumn themed one? Here's the palette and example.

We're all gonna make pixel leaves! When we put all the leaves together, it'll make a great deviation, like `ShoneGold did with the pumpkins last year!

I know, I know, I still need to feature the art from last month's challenge. I'll get on it.

And I think I should make a stamp.

October - Pixel Art Challenge:

Create an autumn leaf - maximum 100x100 - using the palette I've provided [link] .

Remember, this is a challenge, not a contest, so there are no rules, but here are some parameters:

- You can use whatever program you want, Photoshop, MS Paint, or whatever. For it to be submitted to the pixel art gallery, however, it must be in gif or png format. Oh yeah, and I want them to be transparent for collaboration purposes.

- Remember for something to be considered pixel art, it is made "using only the pencil tool, hand laying individual pixels one at a time, under high magnification." (dA's Gallery Info.) [link]

Participants will be gathered into one big deviation and featured in my journal. I'm going to see if I can get some gallery directors and admins on board too.

I thought I'd try something new: the Monthly Challenge. Each month I'll suggest something to do to exercise your artistic skills. I hope everyone will participate and you'll spread the word! Let me know in the comments what you think.

And don't forget to visit the lovely *algy, who painted this month's feature. She and *celesse have a great webcomic.

September - Photoshop Challenge:

This may be a stretching exercise for some of you, a limiting exercise for others. Create a desktop wallpaper - minimum 600x800 - with only custom shapes and gradients.

Here is a simple example: [link] (It's already got 2 faves! )

This is a challenge, not a contest, so there are no rules, but here are some suggestions.

- Set a time limit. See what you can do in just half an hour total, or try one hour an evening for two days.

- Use only the shapes and gradients that came with your program. If you download any, be sure to link to the source in your description!

- Screen resolutions: FAQ #813: What screen resolutions are accepted in the Wallpaper gallery?

Participants will be gathered into one big deviation and featured in my journal. I'm going to see if I can get some gallery directors and admins on board too.

Hope everyone had a good Canada Day and Fourth of July and everyone enjoyed the fireworks.

We're renovating our bathroom.

And my mind is full of stories.

Fanfic-type stories. But that doesn't matter. I just like going to my story place.

That's a place in my head. It should probably have a name, but for now it's just "my story place."

How to keep a toddler from getting underfoot

Step one: Put the toddler on his stepstool and fill the bathroom sink partially with water. Not too much! He'll make a mess! Just enough so he can reach it and paddle around a little. Put some toys to play with in the water such as his rubber duck, a washcloth, and maybe an empty hand soap bottle.

Go about your business in the next room. In my case I was loading the clothes washer; I have a convenient laundry room upstairs next to the bathroom.

Peek in every few seconds to check that the baby was where you put him and still safe and enjoying himself.

When you get a chance, go in to play along.

Watch him cough and spit bubbles because he discovered how to open the bottle and decided to drink some soapy water. (It is a bottle after all...) Then notice that the mirror is wet, the floor has a puddle snaking toward the door, and even the window has been splashed.

Oh well, you needed to clean up the bathroom anyway. Drain the sink and throw the soap bottle in the recycle bin. Find a couple of old beach towels and flop them on the floor, one for each foot. Skate around on your towels until the floor is dry and clean. (Spray a little all purpose cleaner first if you want.) Use the cloth to wipe your mirror, counter and window. Engage the little one by giving him a cloth too -- he loves to copy grown-ups.

Finally, put some dry clothes on your baby, then get a snack and take a nap.

Baby can splash in the sink the next time you need to clean the bathroom...!

Yep, that happened this morning. On another day, I would probably have been livid. On that kind of day, I wouldn't have let him play in the water at all. So, whatever.

Yes, I will clean my bathroom like this again. When I need to clean the walls, I'll just fill up the sink a little more.

It's a contest!

Carol-Lines!

Sorry, everyone! I wanted to launch this contest long before now, but I was heavily involved in a Christmas play at my church. That took most of my time and attention for the past few weeks. But now, here it is! I'd love for you to participate if you can.

This is a Christmas themed contest, and the topic is a line from a Christmas song. I'm calling is the Christmas Carol-Line Contest!

Entries should be of the visual art variety: traditional, digital, sketches, whatever! From MSPaint to oil paint! Fanart is fine. Anything you like, just keep it rated "G".

Here is what you do. Pick a line from a Christmas song and draw an illustration of that line. Such as: "a one-horse open sleigh," "it's a marshmallow world," "see the blazing yule before us." Or, what does "Harold Angel" look like? How about "Mary-Ann Bright?" Draw the picture that comes into your head when you hear a particular song. Give the song title and special lyrics in the description of your deviation. If you don't celebrate Christmas, you can pick any wintery, holiday-themed song.

The winner will recieve a 3 month dA sub. Runner(s)-up will receive a chibi of their choice by me. The lovely *algy has agreed to help me judge, and has offered to contibute a prize too.

Anyone can participate, no matter their skill level. Judging will be based on feeling and creativity as much as artistic merit. You may win, as long as we can see that you put some thought and effort into it! Participants and their art will also likely be featured in my future journals.

To enter, leave a comment in this journal with a link to your deviation. You can enter as many times as you like.

Since I know that December can be really crazy, the deadline is midnight, January 5th, 2009. Winners will likely be announced January 6th. I know that's only three weeks. Again, I'm sorry. These are my planned dates, but I'll extend the deadlines if necessary.

Don't stress over it, okay? The holidays are stressful enough! I'd love to see any doodles you come up with. The idea is spreading holiday cheer, so don't take it to seriously, all right?

Anyone out there wondering why I've been so silent for the past six months?

Well, being pregnant is probably not an excuse, but that's what I'm going with for now. Only two more months to go and I can't believe it. It feels like I've been preggie for a long time, but it's still difficult to realize I'm going to have a real live baby soon. Aaaaaaaaaaaaaah!

I want to draw, but it's been like pulling teeth trying to squeeze anything out of my hand. I'm trying. Anyone who's been expecting art from me, please don't think I'm a total slacker.

I've taken the notion to use this journal to record quotes that I find inspiring, uplifting, or motivating. It'll be a lot more interesting than my usual "nothing to report," and other people may get some use of this space too.

I don't have much to report. I got Prismacolor markers for Christmas, but I've mostly been colouring other people's art, which I won't post here. I'm enjoying the markers because they're so much faster than coloured pencils. The colours are so saturated and vivid.

I recently discovered Avatar: The Last Airbender and I'm really enjoying it! I'm just tickled to see the big "7" in the corner of the screen. I've got that age beat by a couple of decades. But it has good writing, endearing characters, and beautiful art, so I make no apologies for being a fan of what was designed to be a kids' show. I have a couple of pieces of Avatar fanart lined up so hopefully I'll be able to post something else soon. I blame *osy057 primarily for my newfound fandom. I thought, "if he thinks it's good, I'd probably like it too," and I was right!

Oh yeah, I'm on Gaia just about every morning. My Gaia username is comfycozie. SilverLyfe and CoziesPaperDoll are mine too. If you want to be friends, please note me.

I saw a soldier in the grocery store the other day. I wanted to slap him on the shoulder and say, "hey, thanks for being a soldier!" Can't really do stuff like that but I hope my thought counts for something. I hate it that our boys are getting killed over in Afghanistan but I'm glad that there's someone willing to go. I know I couldn't be a soldier. I'm a fluffy, live-in-your-head type of person.

*sigh* I don't think the stupid reasons for wars can ever be worth the lives that are wasted on them.

My journals usually come around once a month or less, but I feel I need to update to remove my plug for Opera. I still lovelovelove Opera, but this new dA is just a mess! I have IE and Firefox as well, and the new format looks flawless in Firefox. In Opera, there are floating squares covering up stuff on the main page, the links on my message list wonât work, and - freakiest of all - when I use my mouse scroll button, the page will only scroll down, whether I scroll up or down. (Iâd like to know how they managed to do that!)

I am sure the hard-working staff is fixing these problems. They just wanted to launch the new format on dAâs birthday, even though itâs buggy in an uncommon browser. Please, fix it soon! Opera and dA are usually so great together.

Kiriban: Iâll draw a chibi of an existing character for visitor #1000! (The pageviews are a little harder to see now, arenât they?)

Yes, indeedy, ladies and gentlemen, I have left dial-up behind. I now have my handy-dandy DSL modem. No more loading big dA graphics one at a time! (That's why I love Opera so much; you can turn off the graphics and only load the ones you want. It's ideal for dial-up users.) Surfing and downloading feel so much tidier now. And I can listen to internet radio, which is great. I like classical music but the station that's broadcast from Toronto isn't always clear enough to listen to on regular radio in my area. So I can now listen to Classical 96.3 [link] and AccuClassical. [link]

It's funny, last year when I signed up for a dA account, I had my Dad's old laptop that he gave me, and a scanner I bought at Walmart to scan my drawings. Since then, I've gotten a Wacom tablet, a new HP desktop, and now hi-speed internet. Does any of it make be a better artist? Nope! I've still got to hunker down with my sketchbook and pencil to work on my anatomy and use of light and all that basic stuff. [Want a good, inexpensive book for that? Get Jack Hamm's Drawing the Head and Figure. [link] Awesome little resource.]

I am reading Gone with the Wind for the first time. I didn't know Scarlett had a baby with her first husband! That was completely left out of the movie. I'm really curious to find out what happens to him. I'm expecting him to get sick and die. But maybe he has a place in the story... we'll see..!

I haven't produced much art this summer. Things will likely continue the same way. In a couple of weeks we'll be going "down home" to Newfoundland. [link] I may not do much drawing but hopefully I'll have some nice photos to share. Newfoundland is so very photograph-able!

Enjoy a breath of fresh air

Anti-smoking crusader Heather Crowe passed away from lung cancer on Monday, May 22, 2006. Crowe never smoked, but was a waitress for decades, and was exposed to second-hand smoke in the workplace. When she found out she was dying from lung cancer, she participated in a Health Canada television campaign. A Flash version of one of the ads is available here: [link] . Anyone out there who smokes, I'm not going to tell you to quit; that's pointless. If you want to, you will. However, anyone out there who is thinking about trying a cigarette to see what it's like, please don't. Run away. You're not missing anything.

...in the meantime, here's a baby pic. I really love P-chan (my previous avatar) but the gif was made with screencaps, so that's copyright infringement. Very bad. Shan't be done. So the pink baby pic is temporary until I make a new ani gif.

It's January the 20th and it's sunny, 10ºC, and I have my window open. What happened to January in Canada? This is weird -- but nice! -- but, weird! Hey, I'm not gonna complain; all this warm weather is having a lovely effect on my gas and electric bills!

Chriiiiistmas time is heeeere, haaaaappiness and cheeeeer..... loo loo loo, loo-loo loo loo loo!
Yeah... here in Canada we have Thanksgiving in October, so as soon as Hallowe'en is over, it's practically the Christmas season. Quite a few stores were getting their Christmas decorations and products out a week or two before Hallowe'en. Doesn't feel very Christmassy to me until there's snow though... not that I want it to get that cold yet.

In the meantime, I'm still working on my entry for ~bottled-talent's October contest. I only have two weeks left; the deadline is November 15th. This project is the most complex and challenging thing I've tried thus far. Somehow I'll get it finished. I've wanted to draw a gift for *celesse for so long! (There's homage paid to *algy in there too.)

Sunglasses and a sweater. That's the kind of weather that makes me happy.

Fewer bugs doesn't hurt either.

Anyhoo, I've created a lavish piece of visual art -- okay, a scribbly comic -- for the monthly contest at ~ThatTime. If you have never watched Inuyasha it will make absolutely no sense. But I think it's fun. And fun things belong here. Along with improper sentences that are actually clauses.

I would like to have more sketches in my gallery. Right now, though, I am visiting my parents in Newfoundland. The tablet practice has pretty much stopped. I left my old, full sketchbook at home and since I've been here I've been nearly devoid of, well, sketchability. I try to make myself draw but nothing comes out!
It's another week or so before I go back home, and then, hopefully, I'll have some new stuff for my millions and millions of fans! Maybe some old stuff that I happen to like too.

P.S... Does anyone else besides me really love circle templates?
Yes, I'm lame, and I don't care.

I bought myself a treat: a Wacom graphire3 4x5. Yay!

Okay, so I don't really know how to use it. And I don't know how to use the tools in Painter. But I'm having fun figuring it out.

Anyone who wants to leave some tips for the tablet newbie, feel free.

Okay, so I've posted a drawing. And it's coloured, however shabbily! I know there's enough Inuyasha fanwork out there to choke ten horses but Takahashi characters and stories inspire me to keep drawing, as well as writing. Whatever helps me practice, I won't argue with it!
