Dream City

Let me take you through a story of rapid mood swings, biscuit disasters, and way too much food for four people.

I don't even really know why Thanksgiving exists, or how it evolved the way it did. Sure, it's good to keep what your thankful for in the forefront of your mind, but really, the whole history of the holiday baffles me.

The day began with my mother insisting that I deal with the giblets (the heart, kidney, etc of the turkey). "You have to slice off the fat and..." at that point the kidney nearly slipped through her fingers and I had to cut her off. "Mom. I'm going to be sick." She gave me such a 'don't-be-such-a-wuss' look. Usually I pride myself on how able I am to stomach gross things. Animals are a different story. I swing between being vegetarian and eating meat on occasion. And hoooly shit. Seeing that kidney nearly fly at me was freaky.

So instead of dealing with the giblets, I got turkey massage duty. This involved throwing canola oil over the bird and giving the skin a good rub down. A massage. I was massaging a dead bird.

the.
fuck.
lol.
It was all cold and bumpy from where the feathers used to be, and the skin kept wrinkling up. Ahhh .

Hours later when the bird was about 5 minutes from being pulled out of the oven, chaos broke loose. Out of nowhere, my father became angry because no one told him how to make the mashed potatoes. The whole house was in a coughing fit because my mom put too much pepper in the green beans. Meanwhile my brother and mother were hashing it out because he wanted to sit on the couch watching football. Ohhh family.
So while all this mess is going down, I'm desperately trying to dodge people in our kitchen so that I can get the biscuits all figured out. I'm sure you all can imagine how silly that must have looked.
Don't ask me how this happened, I really have no idea.
The pan hit the upper part of my arm, resulting in this:



It stung for a while, but it's kind of a cool scar

After all that mess it ended up being a pretty awesome feast. I didn't over eat, for once.
Allthough, this morning when I woke up to grab some breakfast, my mom informed me that my cat was puking. So I got to spend the morning cleaning up cat spew all over our glass door. Cat food, smelly stuff, and grass. Mmm delicious. Thanks Savvy. You're the best.

And now the best part. Crazed holiday shopping. Good luck comrades!

I need advice. Real, honest advice. After watching those vids, espeically the one of Gisement, I feel like my artwork has hit a wall. My technique has changed, my patience has become thin, and lately I am completely displeased with my anatomy. I have very general and basic knowledge of how animal forms work, the rest is filled in my my head. Coloring; I know how to do it. But same problem. Mostly it's my head filling in the gaps, which means for very wrinkly necks and arteries that don't make sense... muscles that don't exist etc. That image, the one of Gisement... I feel like that one was really awesome. Lately there hasn't been much that I've been satisfied with. Back then I thought I was lazy, but now I feel like I'm getting worse! D: Bah!
My question is this:
What is something you do when you feel displeased with your art?

I'm trying some techniques, but the frustration still is there. I'm considering completely revamping my style and forcing myself to concentrate on what I'm doing. It's so easy to zone out when you have a formula from beginning to end. 1: noble creature. 2: pick a fantasy landscape. 3: pick glowy bright sort of colors. 4: color the image. 5: slap in some clouds and stars. 6: submit to deviant art.
Might do some more cartoons too. Who knows. I just feel a need to change it up. Maybe work on my own characters some more. Ahh.

Also, I won't be accepting equine commissions for a while. I really need to break out of my comfort zone here.

That being said, how about a change of tune?
WE FINALLY GOT A STORM!
The wind was howling and I ran out in the rain with my cat. Savvy was a little scared, but after a while he started batting at the rain drops as they fell, and tried to pounce on them . I absolutely love storms. I like to think, sometimes, that StormCry ([link]) is paying me a visit.

And now the wishlist. Sorry if you had to scroll a lot I just am sometimes uncomfortable posting these because I feel like a snob. No pressure either! This is for those that KNOW they want to get me something, but have no idea what to get!

Self healing. Oh what a powerful experience you are.
But I'm not here to bore you all with details Instead, I'll speak of shoes and ships and sealing wax, of cabbages and kings.
Or, how completely in love with traditional art I am. Maybe because it actually works for me. Hah. Seriously now, time to get a scanner and upload my recent work. Photographs just don't cut it, no matter how much editing in Photoshop it takes . I think the healing has helped the art block.

Shit happens. I hate that saying. But it does.
And it's hard to remember to breathe.
But I do breathe.
And I listen.
and I keep running with life

In any case, I just didn't want this to be a quiz only journal. But *Winzer tagged me soooo. Here we go

Cars buzzing down the freeway, late night chirpings of insects, my fingertips on the keys.

7. When did you last step outside? What were you doing?
A few hours ago, on the way to the coffee shop. I was thinking about life, about the odd things that continuously happen. The strange coincidences that follow me. The people that turn up. The people that disappear. What I want. What I need. How much I love being scared by people. How much I love when unexpected things turn my world upside down. When the norm gets shaken and my shell cracks open.

8. Before you started this survey, what did you look at?
My recent deviation, but in it's real form. The paper on which the drawing exists in it's non yellow photographed form.

9. What are you wearing?
Blue lace bra, gray tank top, and beige pants with lots of pockets. I feel like such a girl, eating chocolate sorbet and taking quizes at night.

11. When did you last laugh?
Talking to ~tabbykit on AIM, when she refrenced an RP we had YEARS and years ago, one in which her character, Siona, stabbed himself in the foot. Hehe.

12. What is on the walls of the room you are in?
A lot of artwork that *whirl-wind has mailed to me or given me when she came to visit. There's also a wind chime, glow in the dark stars, bells, necklaces, prints, bracelets, and my own paintings

13. Seen anything weird lately?
Few things weird me out. Though I did see a beautiful young woman picking at her butt. That made me laugh though. I also saw an elderly Chinese couple picking out lube at Target. That made me laugh as well, but not at them. I was more happy for them. They looked so excited!

14. What do you think of this quiz?
Same old. I'd like some deeply psychological questions that challenge me and make me really consider who I am. This kind of stuff I can just spew out.

Here's how it works.
After paying the $15, you can tell me what you want me to draw for you. It can be a landscape, a personal character of yours, gift for a friend, a portrait... any subject matter you want!
But
I am leaving it open ended as far as exactly what kind of image you will get. I need to keep things interesting for myself and in order to get these done before the holidays (goal I'm shooting for), I'd like to have some freedom with the image. So, you could get a head shot with a detailed background, a full body character image with a minimal background, etc. The only exception is for landscapes.

Hey guys! Rough week. My mom fell down the stairs and badly sprained her wrist and ankle and the bank charged me for an overdraft that didn't exist x_x bleh.

On the bright side, I found some video footage from when my monster cat, Savvy, was a kitten! For those who don't know, Savvy is HUGE. Not fat huge. Like, lion cub huge. He's still growing after 3 years, weighs 17 pounds, and is part bobcat . He's bigger than most small dogs! So I was playing around and threw some of it together to make a movie!

Also, I know some of you wanted to hear a sample of my music, so I included a tiny chunk of a song I'm working on called "Meteor Shower." It's kind of an electronic innocent scifi sort of style

I am all for those crazy little tricks that get the inspiration going. Especially making some up, on the fly. The other day I was in Starsucks (starbucks) with ~Oakwitch and we started playing a game. It involved a newspaper, shouting out a random number, an much word circling. The result were some very funny and abstract sentences!

Well this is a variation on my original username, which was based on the children's book of the same title. However, I started going by "Cricket" at a similar point in time, and after I moved "CricketWings" seemed to fit Most still don't know that my real name is Ashley, and I don't mind being called that!

"She watches 113 people, while 1,020 people watch her." Ah, and like most, only about a third of those watchers are actually active, and maybe 20 or 30 actually bother to comment. Except on that big watcher feature, everyone came out of the closet. That kind of bothered me :/ I felt a little used.

Well I unfortunately missed that fluke draik release on draik day. I might try applying for one but that's a shot in the dark and a lot of work... And saving up is ridiculous.
My question is this. I know a lot of my watchers found me through Neopets.com, and a number of you don't play anymore. I wonder if you have a Draik that you would be willing to transfer to my account? I have a personality and character all planned out and everything, and you all know he'll get plenty of attention art wise . All I'm looking for is a well named draik that needs some loving

In other news, life is kicking my ass right now. School is rough. Relationships are rough. But there's diamonds out there :] I find myself writing a lot more these days than drawing. College for 4 days, then veg for 1, then friends on saturday, visit with dad on sunday. Monday is my art morning, but I have school that day too. Ahhh it's all so crammed. I'm hoping I slip into a rhythem soon... I feel pretty worn out x_x.

The good news is, though yoga is a lot tougher than I anticipated, my arms are getting STRONG. I can actually do push ups now XD. Five years ago I was so athletic and strong and in shaaape. After high school it kind of died... and I put on a lot of weight D:. I lost 20 pounds recently and now it's all about the exercise . I've always wanted upper body strength to a degree because I miss being able to climb and pull myself up around things like I could when I was little. Climbing trees! haha.

By my 5 course schedule. Well I'm never doing this again and that's for sure. 5 classes, fun as they may be, are exhausting me. At least I'm still doing well though and hopefully keeping up with my grades for the first time in my life x_x
So I know I owe a lot of people art. I can honestly say that yes, it is being worked on! If any good is coming from my schedule it's that it's forcing me to take time on my artwork instead of rushing through it in one sitting. Most of the things on my to-do list have been started and are in the works. I want you all to know that. And I hope you can bear with me while I try to get all of this done. If I owe you art, please don't feel bad about noting me. Sometimes I need to be bugged and poked and prodded .

In other news, life and such, we've been getting rain in northern California! A big storm rolled over the bay two nights ago and many people were woken at 4 in the morning to the sound of thunder and bright lightning. I slept through it, which bummed me out, but I did wake up to rain hitting my face. I was so puzzled by this (my window was open but we don't usually get rain this early in the season)! So in my half sleeping state, I closed the window, wiped my eyes on my stuffed dog, and went back to sleep.

For those that don't know, I love chaos. I think I thrive on chaos. There is a sweet sort of thrill I get when I know shit is about to go down. Like storms, like 2012... things that shake up the mundane and normal get me very excited! So when I missed the storm I was pretty bummed D:

Hey contest entrants, worry not, I haven't forgotten about you I'm in the process of judging now.

I'm looking to buy a scanner. I can't take decent photographs of my work without losing a tremendous amount of detail. I have a lot of graphite work that I am eager to upload!

So, please recommend scanners! I've got a tight budget. I don't need one that prints and answers the phone XD Nothing fancy like that necessary. Just something that can get my traditional art from point a to point b. Thanks! Also, they need to be Vista compatible.

This was only recently brought to my attention, and I think all artists should be aware of this when dealing with their art being ripped off or used without their consent.

A lot of people are unfamiliar with the words "Art Theft"
When I first heard it, the image that came to mind was of someone running off with a painting from a museum. I think people who are unfamiliar with what it means to have art "stolen" are equally unaware of the consequences should they use an artist's work without signing a release or getting some form of permission.
While I know the majority of us here on Deviant Art are aware of what is implied when using the words "Art Theft" I think a much more appropriate thing to say is "copyright infringement."

People who violate your copyright (and yes, if you made the artwork it is automatically © to you under the Berne Convention) will be far more intimidated if you use the words "Copyright Infringement" instead of "Art theft." In other words, you'll likely freak them out. People are more likely to recognize those words. Copyright is something legal, it can be fined, people can be sued for infringing it.

I'm taking Yoga, Intermediate Acting, Vocal Training, Intro to Electronic Music, and French
Yoga and Acting today, French was yesterday. I love it. I love school. I love learning.
I hated high school so much, but now at age 20.5, being in college and able to pick my classes has been SO nice!

So, Subby is gone and I can't work on Journal CSS for people :/ I haven't uploaded any real art piece in a month... but I'm trying to draw when I can. Life has been busy, and with school back in action, I'm not going to have much time x_x I'll try my best though.

Anyway, if someone can buy me year subscription, I'll draw you an amaaazing picture of whatever you want and throw in a free print :]. 3 month sub will get you a speed painting.

I'll still be drawing, just know that my main focus will be school now. For once in my life! (I had to test out of high school because I hated homework and failed most of my classes XD. Aced my tests and all buuuutttt beyond that I didn't give a rats haha. Stay in school, kids.)

Her hair is supposed to be white, but it's on a white shirt sooo yeah XD.

It works fabulously as a night shirt so far, and the paint dries nicely... so you won't have a stiff cracking shirt . Completely washable (though I recommend turning the shirt inside-out to preserve it as much as possible when washing).

I think I've decided that pricing will be on an individual basis, but won't exceed $50. It all depends on how much of the shirt is to be painted and how big the shirt is. I'll knock off $5 if the shirt is provided.

For instance, something like what I've done above would be around $35-40. XL shirt with only a portion of the front painted. A shirt that is front and back will be more like $45-50.

Also, I don't exactly have a good resource for buying blank shirts, so keep in mind that a blank babydoll might be harder for me to get than, say, an XL shirt like the one pictured. Hopefully I'll find a good resource for buying cheap blank shirts? If any of you know of some, feel free to let me know.

Also, would anyone be interested in buying t-shirts of your characters, painted by me? The four of us painted shirts, and I did a pretty neat one of Dil... soooo t-shirt commissions may be opening if there's enough interest. I'm thinking somewhere between $30-$50, depending on how much of the shirt is to be painted and how big the shirt is.

This one is actually for one of you deviants here. I've been working on it for a while, and I'm please with how it's coming along. Lots of major changes since the beginning. Refs used.


Can you guess who this duo is? I'll tell you Zero and Delirium. This is the moment when Dil decided to settle on Earth and Zero basically lost his mind from rage. Lots of refrences used, some my own, some from various stock accounts. Parts of Dil's face were traced

And this one is the WIP from my recent picture of Zhy. I had a lot of fun coloring Ezebo, but like I said in the description, Zhyaril just dominated the picture like the sexy beast he is. Sorry Ez!


For =AureliusXII. Ahh my best friend in the world :] He has this beast character that has the head of a raven and the body of a panther. Similar to a Gryphon, but much sexier . I'm really proud of myself with this one because I'm not so used to drawing birds or cats, and I've never combined the two. I'm sure there are plenty of anatomical errors, but for now, I'm pleased And no refs used!

haha well it happened AGAIN. This time on Howrse. I hear a lot of people get their art ripped at that site.
Cozmiah has been thoroughly mutilated.
Cropped and plastered with her name; blinding and animated. Which I actually find kind of funny.
If anyone is familiar with that site, could you please help me get the image down? I couldn't find any "Report" or "Contact info" ... then again I am pretty tired

So, I hoped it wouldn't come to this, but I've gone around and stamped as much of my art as I can with the DA watermark. A temporary solution until I can come up with one of my own and apply it to each and every one of my deviations :/ I know people are going to complain about it because, let's face it, it really makes an image look tacky. A giant square in the middle of your picture? Bleh. It does ruin an image (especially the DA watermark -_-; ) I don't like it, but I don't like my art being edited, cropped, and turned into ridiculous banners without my permission even more.

I'm glad people like my art that much and everything, but if someone wants the rights to an image of mine, they have to pay a pretty penny! x_x Internetz. *fist shake*

Long journal is long. First things first. New CSS.
I wanted something simpler, cleaner, but still me. Tell me what you think? And this way I don't have to worry about copying and pasting codes into my journal content. Still have to get commission links and such all set up, but for now I'm pretty happy

I'm pretty excited. is coming over to Northern California this summer and we're going to meet up with down in So Cal. I've known all of these girls for years. YEARS! And all of us met through neopets.com when we weren't even teenagers. Most of us have grown up together. And now we are finally meeting! I swear, if one of you turns out to be an axe murderer I'm going to be pretty pissed off

So yeah. I've been sick as ever for the past 5 or so days. It all peaked yesterday, when I could barely lift my head without getting dizzy, coughing, and all sorts of yuck. Bright lights were painful. The slightest noises were deafening. Not cool. But last night I went through a series of intense shifts in body temperature, which was by far the worst. I'd either wake up freezing cold or sticking to my blankets from sweat. I don't get sick often. In fact, the last time I got sick was about a year ago. When I do get sick, I get REALLY sick. But, the good news is, come morning I felt totally better.

When I told my mom about said temperature change her logic basically flew out her rear.
Mom: "WHAT?! Go to Kaiser! Now!"
Me: *blank stare* "Did you not hear me? I said I felt totally better!"
Mom: "Take vitamin C! Drink water! You could have SWINE FLU!"
Me: "Yes mom. I have swine flu." *woogly fingers in her face* "No seriously. I. Feel. Better." *starts to walk away*
Mom: *shouts after* "SWINE FLUU!!"

lawl.

Anyway. The week has been rather crazy. I don't know how many of you have noticed all this crap going around about "Character Theft Drama" but seriously? I can't say this plainly enough. THE ISSUE WAS RESOLVED. I don't know where everyone got it in their heads that they should post journals about it, spreading it all over DA... OR that I or Whirl were accusing the maker of those adoptables of art theft. We weren't. She came to me asking me if they were too close for my comfort. I said pretty plainly "yeah, they are similar, but I'm not going to bite your head off if you keep them" because I know Dil's look is pretty generic. Nobody was crying over it. Nobody said "ZOMG MY CHARACTER YOU THIEF I AM ORIGINAL BECAUSE I HAVE A CHARACTER THAT IS BLUE AND WHITE WAAAHH". I sure as hell know that there are a lot of characters that look like Dil.
That's as far as my case goes. I don't know if anyone else had a problem with the characters because comments were promptly hidden. But seriously. Enough posting journals about how "stupid it is that people claim copyrights to their characters." It won't get you anywhere and it just makes things worse

Firstly, this is a long journal. I have virtually no experience with art theft, and I don't exactly know what I'm doing here x_x Any help would be appreciated.

So.

You know, it's funny. I always thought I'd be the type to throw a tantrum when I found my stuff on other sites, or coppied and claimed... or just, you know, having my work taken without my permission. I'm not used to it. I found a bunch of OLD work on blogs a while ago, nothing I really cared about, but that was the extent of my experience with "art theft" ...Now that it's turning up left and right, I just find it kind of funny. I think people just don't know, or they're being a smart ass.

Lately I've been googleing my user name "CricketWings". Most of the images that show up are thumbs from DA, but a few times I find something that's on a foreign site. I send them a message in both english and their language, laying out the whole "Ask before use, read the rules, etc." If they take it down, awesome. Sometimes they don't. Most of the time I don't even get a reply. I usually drop it. I mean, I don't really care THAT much. Especially if the image hasn't been altered and my watermarks are still visible.

Last week I found "Dawn of Hope" plastered on a blog as a header. It was the only image on the site. Commissioned work I DO fight for. Someone payed me for that image, the rights belong to them (which makes me think I should remove some of my commissioned work from the internet). I tried contacting them but the image still remains. So, I suppose my first question, as a n00b with virtually no experience with this sort of thing, is how can I contact Onet.net (I think that's the site) and how can I have them remove the image?

Yesterday.

I started searching my user name HERE on DA. Mostly turned up my work and colored line art. A few images turned up where people mentioned "I hope to be like CricketWings one day" or something similar (you guys rock!). Then I thought to try using the little codes like iconcricketwings or devcricketwings without the colons. A TON more art showed up! People crediting me for helping w/tutorials and such, even giftart I hadn't seen.

But there was one that looked frighteningly similar to my "StormCry" piece. I opened it up. She had mentioned me via icon, but beyond that I had no idea what she said in her description. Even google had a hard time picking up on most of the words. When I took the image into Photoshop and resized it, it turned out to be a pretty spot on trace. I mean, on one hand I was kind of thrown off because I pretty heavily referenced the pose/coloring from a lipizzaner pic myself, AND she seemingly gave me credit. But I was never asked about it :/ Still, I reported it to DA, and they took it down. I suppose I'm lucky in that respect because I know a lot of people have been having trouble getting rips of their work taken down. That one I am confused on... I guess my question here would be, was it within my rights to report it? x_x

This is my third contest, and I am very excited to host it Prizes will be delicious!
The theme this time around is Mythological Deities. I want to see how others can incorporate my characters into scenes from traditions around the world. Egyptian, Greek, Babylonian, Celtic, Native American... if the story exists you can use it!

Please note me or comment here if you would like to donate prizes!

I would love to see my characters in those stories. You can draw them as a particular god or goddess, or you can have them interacting with one. And the character you choose does not have to retain an equine form. I would be thrilled to see them as a fox, human, fairy, fawn etc. Whatever you want, really, as long as it fits the myth you pick. They don't even have to maintain gender, as most Deities can be represented as both.

For example, you can portray Valar as Hades. Or StormCry as Atum-Ra. Or Dil could be Hera, arguing with a Zeus like figure.

Important Notes: It would be wise to match personalities or abilities with the scene being represented. For instance, my character "Zero" would not make a very good Demeter . Please make sure you are informed on the character you are drawing, and the Myth/Deity they are representing.

You find yourself being sucked into the criminal underworld, resorting to bribery, corruption and theft just to get a fix on all the new goodies in an early beta copy of the next release.

You're first thought as to how to fix a hole in your wall is to use the clone tool, and then the healing brush to make it look more natural.

You're standing by the ocean and wondering who used Ocean Ripple.

You actually get these jokes and pass them on to other friends who are addicted to Photoshop.

I'm kind of scared to show the picture, because I know there are tattoo thiefs out there, and so much time went into this design... even though it's simple, each and every part has a meaning

It didn't hurt really. It was better than a bee sting! I barely felt anything until the end, when he did touch ups. By then, I was getting antsy from having my head pushed into a pillow for an hour XD. Anyway, here it is!

I feel like it's been a VERY long time since I've given a life update!
So first things first, this saturday I'm getting my first professional tattoo, in Berkeley. It's a sun design on my neck!
It's not my first tattoo. When I was in 8th or 9th grade, I took a sewing needle and calligraphy ink and tattooed my legs with spotted designs . Idiot allert. They're still there though! haha. Luckily my mom is mostly blind. When she looks at my legs I just tell her they were sharpied x_x. She does know about the tattoo this weekend though. I don't think she approves completely, but she's not stopping me! hehe. I'm sure she'll grow to love it. It's like men and babies. Kinda.

Also, this sunday, is Peter S. Beagle's 70th birthday! For those who don't know, he is the author of The Last Unicorn! AND GUESS WHAT?! He's celebrating in SAN FRANCISCO! Ohhh I'm totally going to try to go if I can. I'd just have to hop on the train and then take a bus to golden gate park :] Unless Ari can drive us. It sounds like such fun. I ADORE Golden Gate park! If I go, I'm totally getting my book signed as well as a picture with him! yay! Hopefully it fits in

Also, I'm single. Any male artists out there what a cute photoshop/music/book loving contortionist who is good with her tongue?

That's right.

That last picture I uploaded of my Gypsy Vanner? That's the last image from me that you will see from CS3.
On to bigger and better things! WOOT WOOT.

Amazingness of Photoshop CS4:
- ZOOM! You can zoom to any size and the image wont go all wonky like it does in earlier versions!
- hot key's for dragging brush size and hardness. For those of us that are quick with our fingers, this is a big plus!
- FREE ROTATING CANVAS! Oh this alone was worth the upgrade. Traditional artists, I'm sure you all are constantly rotating the paper. Some strokes come a lot more naturally to the wrist! Well, now we can rotate our canvas as such with CS4!

And that's what I know so far. I'm sure there will be plenty of things you will be hearing from me in the future!
I haven't even TOUCHED Flash, dreamweaver, illustrator or the others yet!

I'm trying to put a positive spin on my life. Remember when I mentioned how things weren't exactly looking up for me recently? They got worse! Hah! Not only did I overdraft at the bank resulting in a $200 fee, but this morning my tablet broke.

Broke!
Dead!

And sure, I've been iffy about drawing these days, but after my latest poll and all the WONDERFUL and helpful critique, ideas, and insight... well this morning I woke up very ready to throw myself into some artwork. I open photoshop to finish a quirky bird doodle I've been working on, but what? DENIED.


Oh but hope is not lost, my friends. Generally I'm a pretty optimistic girl.
I called the bank being as it's my first and only overdraft and GUESS WHO'S GOT HER $200 BACK!? That was commission money, birthday money, bus money...


Not only that, but for the first time in 4 years, I'm scoring an A, and it's not in art! It's in DRAMA. Woot. My teacher pulled me aside to talk to me yesterday. Dun dun dun.
Conversation continues as such:

Beth: Soooo Meez Ashley with the lovely foreign last name...
Me: *tiny voice* yes?
Beth: How do you think you did with the last scene?
Me: Um. Well. I think I'm learning to manage the hypertension...
Beth: YES. Excellent way of putting it. I hate it when people say "the hypertension is going away" because we are human! Hypertension doesnt GO away. Humans get nervous!
[she's very out there and jolly]
Me: :yes:
Beth: Well let me tell you this. You're one of those people that makes me go "Oh goodie! Ashley is going on stage!"
Me: o_o wha... really?
Beth: Oh yes. Your energy is quite tasty. I get pretty excited for you.
Me: suh-weeeeet.
Beth: You're getting an A.
Me: WHAT.
Beth: You've never been late or absent, you've got great effort, you practically glow when you get into character. Good work. Hope to see you in Intermediate Acting.
Me: *walks back to seat*

Now, anyone who really knows me (which is about 4 of you on DA), knows that it's not easy for me to commit to things. When I was in High School I was constantly ditching class, skipping homework, bubbling in pictures on tests etc. Like my art, I just got bored with the same old routine. Not to mention I have ADD so... concentration? Nada. If it wasn't an art class, I was probably failing. And even my last art class, I barely managed a B-. The Horror!

And anyone who REALLY REALLY knows me, knows that when I was little, I was determined to be an actress or a singer. I fucking love to sing (excuse the language). It brings me more joy than kissing in the rain after watching the little mermaid and prancing with unicorns who can cry diamonds. what? Well, it makes me happy to say the least. I used to be in plays and musicals every chance I got, which abruptly stopped after I was about 10.

Wait. Hang on. I haven't acted on stage in TEN YEARS?!

Needless to say at this point, I was practically pissing myself with joy. I can act. I can act? Whoa. I'm getting an A!

So.

A severe and bizarre twist of events recently smacked me in the face. One I could deal with. The next day another came. Then another. I don't exactly want to go into detail, because I'm not that fond of spilling my emotional life all over the internet, especially on an art focused site. But I will say this:

My desire to continue drawing horses is dying.

Let's face it, I'm that girl that figured out a style that works, gets attention, and has little depth beyond that. I don't put time and love into my pieces anymore. I'm not experimenting as much as I'd like. I sit down, and like a zombie, I process images out by the hour. It doesn't feel good at all.

For once I want to get commissioned to draw something powerful. Not just a "Draw my character doing such and such..." but how about "I'd like a portrait of me and my mother that somehow incorporates the theme of silence."

That would challenge me. And I feel a severe need for challenge at this time.
I'm not trying to put blame on my commissioners either, really anything that pays the bills helps. I feel like I'm to blame for attracting that kind of attention to myself.

Anyone who watches my other account can see the love and care I give to my pieces. They're not horses, and I will never post a horse on that account. The man that encouraged me to make a side account and start over advised against it, and I promised I wouldn't.

For the art I do owe people here, I'll try hard to put some feeling into it, but again... with recent personal events I don't know if I have it in me to churn out a horse slapped on a generic background.

Also if you are going to comment with something that says "cute, pretty, I like it, nice, good work" and other one liners, I'm sorry, but don't expect a response back. I appreciate it, I do. Really. But I don't have the time anymore to find some clever way to respond to all of those. I feel like people that take the time to look at my generic images and CRITIQE (I know I ask not to a lot).. those are the people I owe responses to.

Also also, I'm not looking for hugs or "I'm sorry, feel better soon," this is really just an update on where I'm at as far as art goes.... and I wanted to out my side account. Feel free to check it out (I'm not going to throw a fit if you don't watch me )

So, there's just way too many horse comics out there at the moment and I honestly don't have the time and energy to continue with Deliusion. I'm sick of giving so much attention to Delirium. Dil is beautiful and much loved, but I draw her way too much. Maybe it's because I can relate to her. I dunno. And I can't figure out if I want to go realism, or cartooned. I'm indecisive. The decision to take on this project was so impulsive x_x ....However, I do want to share her story with the world! So fear not, there will certainly be a story to come, just not in comic form. I might play around with a lot of different mediums. It might switch around a lot. Really, I think I'd be content to do it in story book illustration form. Draw a scene from her story, then provide the writing to go along with it.

Woohoo! Testing out some scroll boxes here. Anywhoo... Life never ceases to be interesting. I was supposed to see a play today, for Drama credit. Got the tickets and everything. My parents and brother were going to come along. Last night, mother tells me that she accidentally made plans to see her friend. Boo. This morning my dad calls and says he can't make it because his radiator overheated last night. He tried to hose it down but this morning it overflowed. Soooo. It's been 3 weeks since I've seen my dad, which sucks.
=AureliusXII and I were supposed to see Coraline together tonight, but he's sick. Guess we'll be watching the grammys instead

I'm really trying to take things slow. Only draw when it feels right, you know? And yeah, I still churn out the pictures in one sitting x_x but that's only when it feels like something I want to do. I know I told everyone I'd be working on the next page of the comic but BAH comics are slow! I get so bored with them. I always want to jump from one thing to the next, ahhh you guys know me by now. I'm impulsive!

Annnnd I'm thinking of throwing together a contest. I know, I know, there's a billion and one contests going on right now. But seriously, I want to do something different. Not the whole DRAW MY CHARACTER DOING BLAH BLAH OR WITH BLAH BLAH OR EXPRESSING SUCH AND SUCH. What can I say, those get ooold. Quick. So I want to throw something together that allows someone to really express some artistic qualities (define them as you wish). OR something that challenges the artist. :] I'm still throwing ideas together but if you have suggestions let me know!

The red is already fading from my haaairr. It's some massive lame sauce. So I bought some henna and such, (au natural!) so hopefully that will compliment me faace.

Many things to say.
First off, if you have yet to pay for a commission, don't. At least not yet. I am officially taking a break as of now. I feel I have exerted far too much energy into artwork for other people, and have yet to do any purely for self enjoyment.

8D This is one happy Cricket, ladies and gentlemen.
*whirl-wind commissioned icons for us! That made my day! Just look at the top of my journal and see AND 3 days before my birthday! 20 years, babes. I'll be 2 decades old. Wow.

Last night I plugged in my old hard drive and found a ton... and I mean a TON of old artwork! Art I thought was lost forever... art that is only 3 years old, but so so so much different from what I do now. It's amazing watching the evolution. I think, on my birthday, I'll post a progression through the years again It'll be fun!

Today is going to be one of those good days.
Funny, because the last couple days have been pretty sucky. Loverman moving out, my cat disappearing for 24 hours, seeing a really beautifully sad movie (the curious case of benjamin button) and such. I need a day like today!

EDIT:

Bahahaha! I was right! I was so totally right! =AureliusXII finally got his beautiful Canon 5D mark II. Which, let me say, is probably the most beautiful digital SLR I have ever seen. I can even record high definition video. 21 MEGA PIXELS. DO YOU KNOW WHAT THAT MEANS?! Basically the width of his photos will be something around 5000 + pixels. *salivates* ...I dashed over to Berkeley to see the beauty and get my old SLR (Rebel XTi) back. It was wonderful!

So yeah! Now I've got my SLR back and loverman has a beautiful new camera. Be sure to check his page in the coming weeks for some out of this world photography

I... really want to start cartooning again. Or at least drawing with line art. but LINE ART IS A BITCH. I don't know how you guys do it. It tacks on an extra hour of work for me, to work with the pen tool. And my hands aren't steady enough to do the lines by myself. And then I want to go back and very up the thickness in corners like I did here:

And then all the bother about staying in the lines and being clean etc. And if you really want it to look nice, making the lines' color match the color of the subject... x_x HOW DO YOU DO IT!? I hear from so many people that cartoons are easier than realism.. am I missing something here? lol. I can push out realism in an hour, but cartoons end up taking me three!

THATS RIGHT. I want to know how much YOU know about Adobe Photoshop. Think you're the grand master? Some of questions are tough! Winner gets a feature in my journal! And yes I've punched all my questions into google, so I'm on the look out for cheaters

1. What do CMYK and RGB stand for?

Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Black and Red Green Blue. This is important peeps because pinters print in CMYK but most people set their colors to RGB. Makes things tricky on your printer XD

2. What are the shortcuts for making a brush larger and smaller?

The brackets! [ makes the brush smaller and ] makes the brush larger!

3. What is the spot healing brush used for?

It's wonderful for fixing dust marks. It takes a selection of neer by pixels and translates them over to where you've clicked, but slightly smooths it out so you don't get a random circle XD
(it's the little bandaid tool in the tool bar)

4. What does "Stroke" do?

Stroke: (Edit: stroke, or stroke in layer effects) makes a line around your pixels. For example: you have a circle. Stroke would add a line of your color choice and thickness around that circle

5. What happens when you Rasterize Type?

It rasterizes the type XD. It turns the type into an image, basically. You can no longer edit it with the text tool, but you can treat it as an image for applying filters and coloring over it, etc.

6. What are adjustment layers?

Adjustment layers allow you to change hue/sat, brightness/contrast, curves, levels etc without damaging the image. It creates a separate layer above the selected layer. So if you don't like what hue/sat did to your image and you didn't keep note of the edits, you can just turn off the layer ^_^

7. Name 3 different blending modes:

Normal, Dissolve, Darken, Multiply, Color Burn, Linear Burn, Lighten, Screen, Color Dodge, Linear Dodge, Overlay, Soft Light, Linear Light, Vivid Light, Hard light, Hard mix, Difference, Exclusion, Hue, Saturation etc. XD

8. What is the "Action" window for?

You can record actions! So, if when saving, you want to apply a signature + make a boarder etc. you can record the action once, save it, then apply the action for future images XD It's the lazy man's route.

9. Name 1 way "Channels" can be used:

Controling color, but I'll take the variety of answers I got People can get very creative with Channels ^^

10. Name 1 way Layer Masks can be used:

Like adjustment layers, Layer Masks are used to prevent permanent damage to the image. I mostly use masks for erasing. Masks cover up a certain portion of the layer (based on where you've drawn in the mask).

11. How do you proof your colors for print?

Gamut Warning. Using Gamut will likely make gray blotches over your images to indicate certain colors that will show up slightly more desaturated than what your monitor shows.

12. If you have a white logo with a semi dark background on top of a black background, how can you efficiency make the logo's background black without deleting or masking?

Make the layer's blending mode "Screen" to kill most of the darkness and allow for the bottom layer to show through, then use "Levels" to make the logo's background completely black.

13. How do you set the white point in "Curves"?

Using the eye droppers at the bottom of the menu to adjust the curves.

14. What is a Smart Object layer?

Converting a layer to Smart Object is very handy. Photoshop basically remembers what the image looks like. This is perhaps one of the first years that I haven't been head over heels with excitement. I didn't make a list, I didn't expect much. Money is tight and I notice people often get stressed at this time of year. Being as I am nearly 20 years old now, I can appreciate the gifts, but the childhood wonder is very noticeably gone.

Even still, I had a horrid time trying to get to sleep. I woke up every 3 or so hours last night and after much impatience I just decided to lay awake, watching =AureliusXII sleep peacefully.

It's about 12:20 now. We've all had breakfast and gifts have been all sorted out. I was pleasantly surprised to find some new video games to suck my life away, lovely lovely clothes, and my favorite of all, a very large canvas print of my prized deviation:


It is so beautiful, it nearly brought me to tears. I hadn't expected that at all. The framing is perfect and the color quality is spot on. It looks better than I had ever dreamed.

These days seem to be frought with stress and conflict. Where am I going? What am I doing? I am almost 20 years old. I am paying rent for the first time in my life. I work in an office, putting together products for Live Nation. I like to think that working for dozens of big name bands will make me important, but in reality, people only care about the product. Not the person working behind the scenes. I often wonder why the opinions of others matter so much to me. Why my mother's lack of interest in my life after all these years still has me licking warm tears from my face in the late hours of the night.

All I know for sure is that I like to draw. It's the one solid thing in my life, it seems.

I hate myself sometimes-- for running to the internet, to DeviantArt just to feel cozy and anxiety free. I feel appreciated here. And I hate that a computer has become my escape. Why not run outside? Why not experience the world? I don't know. Instead I stay locked in my bat cave of a room and hope to numb myself. The world scares me.

But I'm not so lost.
I feel, at least I can recognize the need to experience the world.
Last Sunday, *AureliusXII and I went to Berkeley-- faced the blasting wind and the setting sun and the smell of sea salty ocean water-- to take pictures. Pictures of each other, ridiculous from laughter, shivering in the cold, eyes watering. Pictures of the earth rotating, the sun falling, the sky changing colors. Pictures of boats, lonely boats eager to set sail again.

I need more of that in my life.
I want to spend less time on the computer every day and feel the wind and the cold and laughter like that. Because I know this place is NOT my life.

Thtough I still love you all very much.

So, I've decided, once I've completed a good chunk of my commissions, I'm going to start up some tutorials to help all of you! In my recent poll, I asked what kinds of tutorials you wanted and they were all within about 5 votes of each other. So I guess I'll do them all! Lucky ducks. It'll start with backgrounds of all types (with other various objects as well), then move on to basic shading (and I mean BASIC! I'll start from the very beginning with shapes and then move up to the more complicated stuff ^^), and then some techniques I learned for getting accurate anatomy!
