This year marks a new direction for The Neo Tokyo Project http://www.neotokyoproject.com , with a move away from just being a cosplay and pop-culture blog into an actual cosplay events entity.

Here's another tutorial, in a line of hopefully more practical crafting tutorials, and it's a guide to creating a stage safe cosplay sword out of blue foam.

This weapon should provide cosplayers with hours and hours of safe fun bopping each other upside the head at conventions, amongst other things.

Part of this tutorial also demonstrates my method for crafting basket hilts for cosplay props, so if you're wondering how to do it quickly, and on the cheap, do check the tutorial out. ^_^

It's awesomely dark, and at the same time richly atmospheric. The treatment is especially brilliant, resulting in a work that evinces an old painting, while the fiery streak and glowing red eye evoked the sinister feel of a destruction warlock casting Incinerate. ^_^

The studio shoot for our Rogue costumes went swimmingly.

I handled the setup, styling and creative direction again and this time we employed a mixture of strip light and black bounce, as well as dramatic back lighting techniques to generate a style that was not only flattering for the costumes, but also "shady" enough in the context of two World of Warcraft Rogues - one versed in Subtlety, the other in Assassination.

So I survived 3 days of License 2 Play over the weekend, and it was awesome. It was great to hit the same con I debuted my Warlock Tier 5 costume in last year, and this year, it was awesome actually being part of the cosplay competition and winning the West Champion (1st) spot in the CosGames challenge.

Contests for game-centric cosplayers are already a rarity in Singapore. With the local scenes predominant anime and manga bias, it's even harder still for those portraying characters and costumes from Western genres and Western developers to showcase their outfits and talents on stage. I'll be running my first public seminar series - Writing for Comics and Manga - for aspiring comic book and manga writers at SCAPE from December. It's a big step up from just dispensing little pearls of wisdom via MSN, or screaming at people to work on their scripts.

Just caught Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (Part 1), and I was bored out of my mind. If there's one thing to be said about bad sequels, it's that Potter's swansong is painfully placid.

For one, Radcliffe's cringeworthy acting, coupled with Grint's perpetual deer-in-headlights expression really ruined it for me. In the same vein, the trio's only saving grace, Watson, spent more time being the damsel in distress than intellectual heroine.

Now, the sets and special effects were of course top notch. With the kind of budget a Harry Potter movie commands, one would expect nothing less. So I survived AFAX (Anime Festival Asia 2010) - the trudging around in my Victorian Age Vampire costume whilst nimbly circumventing the pedestrian masses, the endless posing for photographs, and generally acting, and staying in character. And if there's one lesson I've learnt, it's hard being a vampire - especially during the daylight hours, without your make up running and going up in smoke. Thank god for air conditioning and the rain - even if I hated it on the second day because I actually got my coat tails wet. At least there was nothing sparkly or glittery about the whole affair. Thank god.

Monday morning. Time sure flies when you're having fun. Hong Kong was a blast, and those three days spent in the Land of Tea and Dim Sum just came and went so so quickly. Hong Kong's really the pearl of the orient. It's a city of sights and sounds. Everywhere you turn, there's something cool to see, something neat to do - it's really that intense.

I'll be putting up a feature about Hong Kong soon enough. I owe the Hong Kong Tourism Board, which graciously hosted the Hong Kong Halloween Treats trip at least that much. The trip definitely wouldn't have been possible without them.

I fly for Hong Kong tomorrow, to put in an appearance at the Animax Hong Kong Halloween gig at Harbour City. It's funny how after trying my damnedest for years, I finally break into show business, even if it's as a cosplayer. It's still cool, in a way.

In the same vein, it's a rare opportunity for me to travel and take pictures of a new place, a new skyline. It's a chance to capture some glimpses of a different place other than this concrete jungle. Scan yesterday was a pain in the ass. Literally. Had air pumped into my intestines, a bunch of chemicals injected, and then they stuck me through this giant x-ray tube that made a "whoop-whoop" sound as it pieced a digital composite of my entrails together. I'm jacked full of meds today because I'm going for a CT scan tomorrow. Body's kinda sluggish and unresponsive, and my attention's shot, but at least I'm still holding on. Just barely.

The whole of last night was spent tossing and turning as the medicine worked its way through my system. Dreams were tortured and fragmented.

It was like the world had turned into a nightmare out of The Sims. Everything was pastel and flat, like it was 2D, rather than 3D. Just came back from Resident Evil: Afterlife. Loved the opening. The DOP used some really simple techniques to create an amazing sequence, so more power to him. Loved Mika Nakashima's zombie cosplay - socks were awesome. All told, the umbrella parade was perfectly choreographed, and was probably one of the high points of the entire film. The rest of it was pretty standard action fare. Lots of props given to pop culture (especially other video games) though. So fanboys, keep checking.

I was too tired last night to write something, even though I really wanted to. My body's still kinda out of it. Sluggish, unresponsive, weak in the joints and the knees.

Saw a kid when I was in hospital yesterday. Couldn't have been more than 6 or 7 years old. He was hooked up to a bunch of machines, and being wheeled towards the surgery area. He was sedated, but he had his fingers clutched tightly around this green toy train, and this inscrutable expression on his face. It was heartwrenching - a beautiful portrait of human suffering that was also incredibly painful.

Here I was assuming that a week after graduation, I'd be set to jump straight into getting my photography career on track. Except this past week has been a regular mess. Tuesday, I fell and gashed my head against a length of pipe in the kitchen. Then my graphics card died and had to be replaced. Then I fell sick with the flu, amongst other things.

I should really leg it so I can raid in the morning, so I'll be brief. I hit the Mascot Parade and costume competition on Saturday, and though I didn't make any of the top prizes, I scored Judges' Choice, apparently for RP and the ability to ham it up in character.

Hit up L2P in full costume today, and the experience wasn't bad at all.

I guess I was more of a menace to the gaggles of happy con-goers than they were to me, all things considered. What with my spiky shoulder pads and all, it was a miracle I didn't poke anybody's eye out. Nevermind that the spikes are moulded out of soft styrofoam. :P

I think I bumped into a few people though, and I'm pretty sure I knocked into somebody when I was stretching my arm to pose for a photo, so if that's you out there reading this, sorry! ^^;

It's 9.33 AM, and I got my results from NTU. So I've got a Bachelor's degree with 2nd class honors now. That's not half bad, considering that I hardly bothered and only put in the barest minimal of effort.

Still, it was nice to notice that despite my relative disinterest, I pulled more As out of my ass than I'd cared to imagine. Goes to show that equivocation and inveiglement goes a long way in academia.

Next up, I imagine, is actually muscling my way into that lecturing job I've always wanted.

In a sense, I'm relieved. I just submitted my graduating project on Star Wars costumers on Wednesday, and I'm fairly confident I won't be flunking anything anytime soon.

I didn't ace my Forensics paper. Pretty much just racked up a bunch of Bs and two As this semester. Not that it's a big deal. Afterall, the only reason why I'm even studying at this point is so I can get that degree processed, and gtfo from NTU.

I received an email yesterday from a complete stranger casing out the background of her latest beau. Seems she met the guy on facebook, and wasn't sure what to make of 'em. Good move, imo.

Now, if only other Internet users were just as careful. It'd really keep the horror stories on WOW, Maple, and those other very many Internet aided relationships from happening. I'm inspired. I've been working on a paper toy project for a campaign in the past couple days, and I'm thinking of developing this idea into a product range. Depending on how things go, there may be some sneaks in the days to come. Rawr! XD

It's 7.19 PM, and it's been what? A quarter of a year since I last posted?

Nothing new's happened, really. I'm still flogging that dead muse, trying to make the best of my dwindling finances, and grasping at whatever creative opportunities come my way. I've also started school again, and this time, I'm intent to finish it, if only to be spiteful to some of the inane bureaucrats.

I've got a few art ideas in my head right now, and they're of a multidisciplinary nature, combining visual, audial and spatial elements to form a coherent whole. Suffice to say, it's going to keep me busy for a little bit from here on out.

It's been close to three months since I've last updated this journal, and for the first time in a long time, I've got no good excuses, no witty turn of phrase, no cunning equivocation to disguise the long and short of it.

I haven't been posting for a rather banal reason. I've been busy with work, on and offline, and its been a rather busy few months.

But now that the grind is over, it seems like work, the erratic, day-to-day background noise, and other stimuli seem to have rekindled my muse, and for once, I feel alive enough to start working on my artwork again.

I've been tossing and turning in bed for the past one hour, agonizing over things I should have done and things I've yet to accomplish.

It's so easy to get sucked into the daily grind, to be distracted by the unimportant and the inconsequential, to lose focus and forget what I'd intended to accomplish in the first place.

Some people have the luxury of wasting their lives away because they have rich parents, sugar daddies and honey mommies to fall back on. Some have family businesses to succeed, ivory walls of academia to hide behind, wealth up the wazoo.

I don't.

It's a shame life in here is all about the paper chase and th ]]>
