Okie dokie folks. I'm going to hold a contest. It will be a "Design a Mate" contest.

Contest Details:

You will kindly be designing a mate for my new unicorn character: [link]

Here are the guidelines for your design:

Gender: A Mare

Breed: Plains Unicorn (Fresian build with heavier feathering on the legs), tasseled ears, long eyelashes and usually an uprite mane, (although sometimes they may be born with the typical equine mane that lays flat against the neck), tasseled lion's tail

Markings: The plains unicorns body colour can range through any shade of gold, chesnut or brown. White markings are allowed, as they are common among the breed, and the breed is typically known for their distinctive black striping and spotting patterns. I give you free range on interpretation on the markings, but most patterns are usually found in nature...(i.e you wouldn't find excessive swirlings or tribal patterns, ect.)

Hands: 15-17h depending on gender, mares being the smaller of the two

Weight: 1050lbs-1250lbs

Please include the mare's name as well. You may include the male in your drawing if you wish, but it is not necessary. No background is required.

You may enter as many times as you wish. Please note me with your entry, simple entitled CONTEST ENTRY.

DUE DATE: August 31, 2009

Prizes:

1st Place: A 9x12 full colour drawing with fully detailed background of your hearts desire, matted and framed.

2nd Place: A 9x12 full colour drawing with simple background of your hearts desire.

3rd Place: A 9x12 full colour drawing without background of your hearts desire.

Please have fun and enjoy yourself and note me if you have any further questions. Good luck and brightest blessings!!

P.S - I've had some questions regarding added extras..like jewelry adornment, wings, multiple horns and such...and I'm pretty easy, but if you go out of the guidelines, such as giving the mare wings, please explain how she ended up that way, since the breed does not have wings. (For example, is she the offspring of a Plains Unicorn and a Pegasus?..and that's how she ended up with wings?)...just have fun and enjoy yourselves!!

ENTRIES:

Whitelightning24:[link]
[link] [link]

*ArtistMeli: [link]

=Sighthoundlady: [link]

~lunatteo: [link]

*SageAndora: [link] [link]

Okay, I have never done this before, but I was wondering if I held a contest if anyone would be interested in it. I'm really having a problem with my new unicorn character...he won't present his name to me..so, I thought maybe if I held a contest to design a mate for him complete with her name, he might be more forthcoming with his own...just to give you a peek as to what he looks like, [link] So, if I get some good feedback on this journal, perhaps I will proceed with a contest and details on prizes and such. I know everyone is very busy lately, so if I need to hold off a while and try this again much later, I will. Forgive me if I sound like a total newbie at this...but I am! LOL. Dangit! DA is a bit fuzzy at the moment and the link isn't working..pooh..anyway, if you'd like to see him, he's "New Unicorn Character" in my gallery...page 2.

I'm not really sure how to start this, so's I'll just go ahead and take the plunge. Lately, as I'm SURE everyone else is feeling, the economy just has been giving me a run for my money, literally, emotionally, and physically...I've had two jobs going, trying to make ends meet, and I never seem to get ahead...I'm always two steps behind. I am struggling to afford my house and cc debt and bills, and the way the country is going, I'm infuriated that all these corporate companies are being bailed out with my tax money, but no one's helping ME!!!!!, the homeowner, the one who's in trouble!!!! AAAARGH...not to mention that the winter is also coming, and being someone with BiPolar II Disorder, and winging it without meds..(I take the holistic approach after some terrible traumas with perscription drugs..another story in itself..)...is just so taxing on me emotionally. I work, work, work, have no time to draw, and when I finally do find the time, I'm simply too exhausted to do anything. I'm not sure really how to better manage my time to fit in the things I want to do. I've always said that no amount of money is worth your sanity, but when it's that revolving paycheck keeping you from living on the streets, it's so difficult not to get caught up in that rat race I always promised myself I wouldn't. Sheesh. I teach pre school, and I can't even begin to explain how deeply it breaks my heart to see the majority of these parents treat their children simply like status symbols, not wanting to spend time with them and leaving them in daycare for over ten hours a day, when there's no need for it, and I can barely afford to feed my animals, my husband and myself let alone a baby though I so desperately want a family of my own!!! Anyway..with all that being said, I've come to the conclusion, that as difficult as it may be to find time to draw, I MUST find the time to do what I love, and what I've always wanted to do...I know right now, I could never be financially stable just being a full time artist, but even the little I do is sooooo sporadic...so, the advice I'm seeking is this, and anyone's input to mull over would be so incredibly appreciated!!!

1. What's the best way to market myself based on the type of
things you see in my gallery?...(obviously, I'm heavily
fantasy, though I'm perfectly capable of doing otherwise).
2. Should I be adding more intricate backgrounds to my work,
or does simplicity work best?
3. What sort of contacts should I be looking for to get my
foot in the door into the artworld?

Basically, I would love to be self-employed and marketing myself very much the way of Amy Brown or Linda Ravenscroft and that sort...but how the hell do I even get started?...I would also loooooove to illustrate childrens books, or book covers..but how does one get involved in that? I must admit, I'm a bit reclusive on the subject....so, if anyone can help...I would really appreciate some thoughts on what direction I should be headed in.

Nasty, Bad, Pagans....

So, yesterday, I was on my myspace, and I got a bulletin regarding something Kathy Lee Gifford stated on national television the other day. The clip was about origins of wedding traditions..and the question was, "What were the origins of wearing the wedding band on the left ring finger?"...one of the answers was that it was a tradition bourne out of Pagan origins..and Kathy referred to the Pagans as, "those nasty, bad pagans"....which had me in a complete uproar. I am Pagan, and the reason I am is because I found that they were most tolerant of other religious factions, nature cycle based, and that witches run in the family(being from England and all). I couldn't believe that she was allowed to make such a racist comment without reprimanding or repercussions of her actions. Don Eimus got fired over his comment of "Knappy headed hoes"...when his job description is to be a "shock jock"...but Kathy Lee attacks a religion, and nothing is done...Two months ago, Al Roker makes fun of epileptics on air, and all he does is make a half assed apology the next day durning some routine commentary....if this county insists on being so goddam politically correct, then go across the friggen board people, and make EVERYONE subject to the same dam rules...otherwise, recognize the constitutional right of Freedom of Speech, and don't attack anyone.....I could care less what Kathy Lee has to say about Pagans...because she's ignorant, so I just take what spews outta her mouth with a grain of salt, but if this country is going to attack people like Don Eimus, then EVERYONE should be held accountable as well across the board for racist remarks.

This establishment is really turning out to be somewhat of a joke. I am appreciative that it is a website that allows artists a place to showcase their creations, but the guidelines and some of it's members are really pathetic. I uploaded a deviation the other day, and it ended up in the wrong gallery..(this has happened so many times before with deviant...I'll upload it to the correct gallery, and then when the computer posts it, it posts it somewhere completely different than where I actually put it). So, someone actually comments me that my deviation is in the wrong spot..(pathetic)so, I comment back that I didn't realize and that it's happened before and I'll fix it...next thing I know, I get 2 notes stating that I have a WRONGFUL DEVIATION LOCATION VIOLATION!!!!!...and that someone has contacted the staff to complain that my piece was in the wrong catergory...what the fu**...are people on here like, 12 or something? It's so nice to see that they're on top of things when your artwork is misplaced, yet they'll rape your ass on the print prices of your artwork.

The first dog I ever owned was a big beautiful huskie/shepard/collie mix named Brue. We named him that cause he had one blue eye and one brown eye, and the word is a combination of the two. I got him when I was a sophmore in highschool, and at the time, while I was going through the angst of teenage puberty, he was my closet friend. He grew to be a huge boy, 135lbs at his prime, and extremely handsome. Then, a few years ago, due to his weight, he blew out his right knee. We had to take him halfway across the state of New Jersey to a special surgeon to have a steel rod and kneecap put in. He was very weak for a few months...then the most horrible thing happened...his other knee couldn't bear the added weight, and that one blew out a couple months after the first one...so back we went...for a second steel rod and kneecap. Needless to say, he was too big and heavy and uncomfortable, and rehabilitation never really worked out for him...he continued to live, but his back legs were never the same..they were now riddled with arthritis, weak and crooked, and would constantly slip to the side out from underneath him, causing him to fall often. We thought about putting him down back then, due to all the pain he was in, even though he was on a pain management system...and then my sister came home with a chihuahua...and suddenly, Brue had something to live for...he began going up and down the stairs again, attempting to run, playing, smiling, and even tried to run away a couple times, just like he used to do when he was a pup to have a little fun......then this past May he began getting very slow, refusing to go out(not having any accidents, but holding himself for days, so he wouldn't have to go down the back stairs)...he started whimpering in pain and became subdued. My parents called me on a Thursday at work and told me that they were taking him to be euthanized that night, and to please come home and say good-bye. I went right to my parents house after work and stayed with him. We gave him a good dinner, and then walked him up the block to the vet. My parents had never done this before, so they asked me what to expect, so I told them. We all went in the room and stroked him till he was gone...he fought the vet the whole time...which still to this day, makes me feel as if I didn't do the right thing....but I will have to come to grips with that. This will be the first Christmas without him in thirteen years, and I decided to do a portrait of him for my parents..it proved to be a horribly difficult task, for everytime I tried to sit down and do it, I would burst into tears and ruin the paper...but, I asked some friends to pray for me to give me the strength, and I was able to get it done....with a few smiles too....I think Brue would be tickled pink to see his likeness, for although he wasn't a vain dog, he definately knew that he was handsome.....such short lives animals have, but their love will light up your life like the powerful intensity of a shooting star.....In Loving Memory.

Some of you have noted me regarding requests, trades and comissions..and while I could really use the money...(I've got a home mortgage and an arkful of animals to support)...I've decided that I can't turn away all you brilliant and beautiful artists who want to request and trade art....so, if you are really, really intent on asking me for request art or trades...note me and I'll do everything I can to fullfill people's requests....all I ask is that you give me the courtesy of some time..(I usually get the brunt of my drawing done on the weekends)...and also, if u could spread my name a bit around the community...it'd be much appreciated!! Thank you to all the artists who stop by to view my gallery and leave such wonderful comments..it means a lot to me. Hope to hear from you guys soon~ Blessings and Merry met~

Elements: Air and Water
Magickal Meaning: Knowledge, wisdom, understanding, purity
Direction: East
Time: March, Spring equinox, 6 AM.
Pace of Change: Rapid at first, then gradually slowing.

The Unicorn indicates purity of thought, wisdom and understanding, and points to knowledge from diverse areas and penetrating insight. This is not only relevant to the world of ideas, because the Water secondary relates to feelings. Comprehension therefore extends to the deepest needs of self and others, coupled with the ability to communicate these realizations. Unicorn signals social activities, talk and laughter. Travel or communication with Otherworld entities. If so, the primary Air confers the necessary discrimination. Artistic activities are highlighted, as is the world of the imagination generally. Unicorn emphasizes the importance of the unconventional and the eccentric, the individualist. Air and Water means that reason is allied with feelings, hence altruism and compasion.
