News 04.16.05
okay, so i lied when i said that i would only be out for the weekend.
i'm mostly caught up now, though for the next (few?) week(s) there may be a lag of a day or two between visits, as we don't yet have internet service at the new house. we don't have phone service either, but that's what cells are for.

those of you watching will notice that i've added a few more pages, with the intended effect of making the club easier to run.
i'll need to find someone to assist in admin duties starting before the summer, so i'm trying to forestall the issues we had back when there were multiple admins. it requires a tiny bit more time, but hopefully eliminates some of the 'right hand not knowing what the left hand is doing' quirks.

that's all for now, and i recommend that none of you ever move anywhere. ever.

activity has picked up, and will hopefully continue to do so. but i must stress something important:
communication with the club should be carried out via notes.
the front page doesn't always get checked, and so your message could easily slip by. so make it easier on everyone, and send a note.

on a related note, (get it? note?) i'd like to ask that
when requesting a critique, please select a few from your gallery that you want done.
we're taking the time and trouble to critique your art, we shouldn't have to search through your gallery to find what we think might be helpful for you. and again, you can link to them by cut and pasting the address into the text. it's that simple.

these are easy things to do, and it saves everyone hassle in the long run.

who are we? what do we do? how can you help?

have no fear, the members are here!
anyone can be a member. becoming one shows us that you support the club, even if your useful skills don't include critiquing.
we appreciate it if you link us in your journal, we appreciate it even more if you tell people about us, and we will positively adore you if you wash our car. but none of that is mandatory, we like to keep things mellow here.


Critics!

got art? they'll tell you what's wrong with it.
a critic in this club is someone who has proven they can deliver thoughtful, balanced critiques, and are willing to do so in order to help other artists. critique requests submitted to the club are forwarded at random to the critics, who write a critique and post it to the work. then they diligently write a note back to the club with a link to the piece they just critiqued. and they never forget that very important step.


The Club!

the past.
the club was conceived, then founded a few weeks later by ~MJRBURNS and myself, =vedaman.
it started out as a network of artists who would critique each others' art, and was successful enough that we had to take on ~gray-dusk as an admin to help with the work load.
long story short, around june or july the club went quite dead, until sometime in late november when ~ gray-dusk undertook the project of ressurecting it. when i got wind of this i felt suitably shamed and went to help her out, i contacted ~MJRBURNS who said that he had also forgotten about the club, and that he had very little time to devote to dA.
so ~gray-dusk and i continued work on the club, until sometime in january when she announced her departure from dA for various reasons.

the future.
so i'm continuing to run the club, and persist in referring to myself in first person plural. because we feel it it gives more weight if people don't know it's just me; that and it's fun.
if the growth continues as it has been going, i will need to find another person to help me out before the summer, when i will embark on my annual sojourn into the wilds of virginia and won't have access to a computer for two months.

so hopefully you all will now know where everything stands, i had a much more comprehensive history written up but my computer crashed as i was trying to submit it. maybe that was for the best.
if anyone has corrections to make, suggestions on something to add, or general smart remarks; be my guest.

joining as a member.
send us a note saying you want to join, and add us to your devwatch. there isn't that much to do, it's basically our way of recognizing you, the deviant, as someone who cares about the club.
there may be contests or activities for members in the future, but for the moment your name will just be listed in our shiny members list

becoming a critic
there are slightly more stringent requirements for this, but nothing too difficult.
this requires active participation in the club, and the ability to write quality critiques.
applications are judged on a case by case basis, so send us a note if you're interested. (and we'd love to have you on board.)


leaving the club

there is certain ettiquite to be observed when critiquing, here are a few basic rules to be observed when commenting.

for the critics out there: yes, criticizing is an acquired skill.
try to be as helpful as possible when commenting, the ideal result is having the artist say “hey, good point! i hadn’t noticed that before now!”

for crits, “this piece sucks” is not going to cut it.
if we see any of this, we will take measures to stop it.
“the way you drew this part of the piece sucks.” is a little better but still not quite there.
ideally, you should say what the problem is, and the way you think that it can be improved.
be as specific as possible.
if you see something off, but can’t quite figure out what it is or how to fix it, then use a
“there’s something about ___ that looks odd to me. does anyone else notice this?”

do not fault styles: if there’s nothing really wrong with something, but you just don’t like the style that they did it in, this does not bear commenting.
however, if the way that they did a certain portion and the way they did another clash, say so.
or, if the proportions are off in some way, but you think that it might be intended, just say “this may be stylistic, but...”
last thing. criticism is not all about finding flaws.

a very good practice is whenever you say what you don’t like, then also add something that you do like about it.
the way they drew this, colored that, the eyes, the hair...
if something looks good, say so.
the same rules appply though: be as specific as possible.

for the receiver: don’t take it personally.
the comment is not about you, it’s about the one piece of art that you just happened to make.

also, it’s just that one persons opinion; that doesn’t make it true or untrue.
you are empowered to totally change your style/habits/technique because somebody said that it looked a bit wiggy;
you can also totally ignore everybody and do whatever you want.
i personally choose the middle road: look at your piece keeping the criticisms in mind, if you see that they have a valid point then keep that in mind the next time you’re drawing.

lastly, if you’re using an intended effect/style and someone says that place doesn’t look right, make sure they understand what you are doing before you write it off.

everybody is expected to abide by these rules, and also participate. you cannot sit back and expect other people to take the time to evaluate your art.
we’re not trying to force people to do things they don’t want to, but if everybody’s waiting for someone else to help out, then nothing would get done.
