Edit: Wooooot, 10k!

Bleeeeeeeeeeh, the Project Managers have all come to the realization that they'll be losing me in four weeks, so now I'm piled up with various work requests (for projects I'm not even on). I guess its kind of flattering since I'm certainly not the only modeler here, but it means this next month is stupidly busy.

Three dog models (German Shepard, Pitbul, and possibly a Rottweiler), a female soldier, 4 stories of a Winter Olympic Hotel, and every possible variation of the T-2, T-72, and T-90. To top it off, I'm also in charge of organizing Professional Development workshops for the extended interns by the end of January, so I have to find people to bring in for that. I was also hoping to do some personal pieces and update my portfolio/website since I have to enter job-finding mode, but that might have to wait until I'm done work.

I'd like to find some time over the Christmas break to work on something. Maybe a certain space General?

It's going to be a busy week between moving out, having no place to stay for a few days, and then moving into my new place. I can see myself being without the internet for a few days even though Aliant has scheduled the switch (it should all depend on if guy has his existing account there deactivated before they try to activate mine there. DO IT GUY). If not, I should at least have Arkham Asylum to keep me occupied for a while.

There s hould be some bonuses to the move however. Aside from having a clean apartment for once, there's a chance I should have some form of a desk back. I've been without one for about a year and a half now, which really makes working on art at home difficult; I just can't find a comfortable way to do 3d with a laptop and a bed (don't even have a mousepad). So hopefully this will mean more art afterwards :3

So I'll be working away at learning that and getting some sculptures going.

At the same time, I'd also like to focus on extremely low-poly work as well, the kind seen on the DS/PSP and around communities like Polycount. So once some current projects are out of the way, I'd like to alternate between low-poly and high-poly every week, hopefully posting more art here.
Personal Art:
Upon seeing zBrush4 will soon be out and is a free upgrade to anyone who purchases zBrush3, I figured I might as well grab the program. Looks like a commercial license is only a few weeks worth of pay, and it seems well worth the investment. I'm currently trying to milk as much out of the demo as I can, but there is a lot of features to learn.

Through all of it so far, I've come to realize I've forgotten much of what Sean tried to drill into my head. Negative space, the planes of the human figure, basic skeletal and muscular anatomy, the "boney landmarks", and so much more. I certainly have my work cut out for me to get where I wish to be, so I'm currently in a mad learning mode hunting down all the books, videos, and reference I can. The feeling reminds me of when I first started school at CATAC.

-----------------------------------

Work Art:
The new project I'm on is to recreate a Kingston class ship in Unreal 2/Swat4/CFDA. We had been waiting for the floorplan and photos, and as of tomorrow we should have all we need to begin this project.

I'm currently weighing my options for future employment as the internship comes to an end. An 6-month extension is available, but there is no guarantee I'd be kept in CapDev and no way in hell I'd work for Courseware. I offered them six months of my time long ago, and their decision of 'all or nothing' has been haunting me ever since.

There is a Game Garage in PEI which I might apply for as well. It is only a 3 month deal though, paying $2000 a month.

And finally there is a local company looking to start up a 3d cell. There would be nothing creative in this line of work as it is just modeling high-detailed machine parts, but the pay is pretty nice (a $5 raise from what I have now, which I already thought was a good pay). I wonder if this would be countered by having to pay more for rent (right now it is $260 a month thanks to roommates, but if they all move and I'm left to find a 1bdr place in this city, I'm looking at $500-700, and my student loans will require payment starting around Jan). But this job should give me ample time to perfect my digital sculpting skills, I might be able to freelance on the side, and the exposure to various machine parts should help me be more creative in that area (designing believable machine parts from scratch was always a weakness for me).

We've finally finished all 190ish buildings required, of which I think I did more than 60 (not including other buildings I had to retouch). It might be a while before they make it into an engine like WiC, but there is a chance the city might want to throw it into Google Earth as we have been working with them as well (I already have a full .kmz file). I recieved my second work review: this time the only negative thing they had to say about me was that I had met all expectations - everything else I had surpassed.

I'm not sure what project I'll get assigned to next as we'll be busy hosting a Symposium, so I'll probably get to be a prop monkey for a week or two, or I might even have to dust off my animation skills.

I've also started some personal art projects, which I'll be posting as time goes on.

I should probably post for the sake of updating; it has been nearly a month. A bit of a busy one too due to the holidays, so unfortunately I've found myself somewhat distracted* from my Art. That's starting to change now though. Christmas had a pretty good art turnout as I once again have a sketchbook that needs to be filled, a nice new sharpener, and a dozen of my favorite kind of pencil, so that will help contribute to my future sketches.

I also have my desktop set up again (albeit in a bit of a temporary place), meaning I can now access XSI Advanced to really pick up my 3D output. I'm reworking my Toph model at the moment, so while it isn't the first submission to be shown, know that it has in fact been updated the other day.

I was invited to a Con a few days ago, which is awesome as I've always wanted to go to one. It isn't until March, but I imagine afterwards I'll have some more inspiration and friends. I'll be posting more about that as it nears.

Lastly, it took me 3 full years of college, two desktops and two laptops, but I am finally the Advanced Curve-Ball Champion with 34930 points. What this means is that in a game of 3d pong, I can hold my own against the Superman while wearing an eye patch to limit my depth perception. I know its not really a major feat compared to my other current priorities (getting a job), but it took 3 years for me to beat, which is more than I can say for any other game.

*Call of Duty and The Orange Box, though at the same time COD will help my military based models, and the Orange Box will help with anything I decide to throw into the Source Engine, so its not a total waste of time

And as additional news, the application for one of the jobs I was aiming for is coming up sooner than I expected (just a few weeks really), and it seems like my art is already being used to help advertise it. So hopefully that gives me in a bit of an advantage

Like many others, last year I set a handful of goals around New Years. Now I would do this for many years throughout my life, but this was the first time I found myself having a few personal tasks (mountains really) that I absolutely had to accomplish in order to be able to look back at the end of the year and be able to think of 2007 with a smile. A year ago these goals seemed completely impossible, but I had no choice but to teach myself to push forward with determination and optimism (without them there would be no other way, and mastering them would only change me for the better). It was a mentally exhausting uphill climb that lasted for more than 300 days, but this last week I feel I finally managed to meet all but one of my goals (getting a job in the industry, but even that only feels a few months away at most).

So while I feel I've earned that smile, I think it would be nice to get a replacement goal as a placeholder for the job. I can't think of anything major that can be done within the remaining days, so how about something as simple as this:

4444 pageviews before 2008

It's not like it is too far away. I should be able to do this by mass commenting and perhaps an additional deviation or two, but if you see this message, I would appreciate lending me a hand and refreshing the page or visiting every now and then for the next week to help me see those 4s.

After a few weeks of letting my other site sit idle (save for file backup and offsite image hosting), I've decided to do something with it. The original plan was html, but that tends to make updating harder, so I am aiming for a platform I've never used before.

Edit:
I've decided to split the site already - it would be easier to do it before there's a lot of content to deal with. The root of the site, [link] will serve as a personal blog/site so I can ramble on about things. DA and [link] will serve as a gallery and Art Journal, similar to DA but perhaps with more journal entries as I'd hate to annoy people with frequent update notifications. The goal is to make it a place more for the finished art, and this DA account will instead see more sketches/doodles/wips so I can use the community for needed crits.

I knew it was coming for months now, something that occurs roughly twice a decade. The Console Wars. A vetern of many wars, I've proudly carried the flag of Nintendo into several battles with the NES, SNES, N64, and Gamecube, and I have to say that there were times when I often wondered "what if". Nintendo has brought many memories with their titles, especially the Marios, Zeldas, etc, but there were many great offerings I was also missing out on from the other consoles.

As I'm focusing on being in the industry pretty much around next October, I knew this time things would be different. PC, 360, PS3, Wii, it doesn't matter - the grass can't be greener on the other side if there are no fences.

So a month away from the start of many great things, I took a small trip to the mall to see where I can begin, and ended up buying Fight Night ROund 3 and Splinter Cell: Double Agent for the 360. I also saw that Ubisoft had FINALLY released their PC port of Devil May Cry 3 for the PC (which I've been waiting quite a while for as I didn't own a ps2 for the original, and it was only $19.00 CAD so all the better). And for the first time in my life reserved a copy of a few games (Gears of War and the THPS: Project 8). I wanted to reserve Superman Returns at the same time, but didn't see it. Battlefield 2142 looked pretty tempting, but in the end I decided that since I'm just starting with BF2 that I wouldn't mind going without it for a while. With the release of the new system coming up in a few weeks, I knew I'd have to be back to get more games anyway. I also decided it might be good to buy a set of fans for the 360 to keep it running cooler and longer (albeit louder), and the official VGA cables for a friend as he had expressed interest in them and I'm in the mood of gift giving.

Now for the delicate balance of gaming and art >_<

100 questions for an artist

1] What is your pen name?
Cryrid

2] How did you get the name?
Minor altercations to a result of a random name generator I used long ago. No one else was using the name anywhere on the net, so I took the liberty. I'm pretty sure that the thousands of results churned out by google all point to me now too.

3] Do you use PC or Mac?
I'm a gamer, so PC. That and I hate CRAP
*glares at Mac fanatics*

4] What software you use most often?
Photoshop 7

5] Do you use mouse, or tablet?
Both

6] The color you use most often is?
Green

7] What area of the pictures do you put most effort into?
Most (hell, all) of my pictures actually start out by me doodling a head with no thought to the rest of the picture (ever notice the lack of a good pose and feet?), so the head gets a lot of attention.

8] How long does it take you do draw a picture?
Since they're doodles; 10-20minutes on average.

9] Do you keep your rough drafts?
Somewhere.

10] What kind of font do you use most often?
I have a few ones I downloaded that I like.

11] What's the dpi when you scan?
Usually around 300, but I'm thinking of increasing it soon.

12] Do you do anything else when you're drawing pictures?
Listen to music, visit websites, watch tv, talk on msn

13] How many pictures do you draw in a month?
Real/complete pictures: 0, but I do go through sketch books pretty quickly. Now that I think about it, I guess Sean and Zen are technically increasing the number of pictures I do in a month to a lot, especially if you count the animation frames.

14] What kind of paper do you draw your pictures on?
What ever I can find (as long as it doesn't have lines or something else on it)

15] What kind of paper do you use for sketches and drafts?
What ever I can find (as long as it doesn't have lines or something else on it)

16] How long does it take to ink something?
Never tried with a pen. In photoshop I might spend 20-60 minutes since I never have too much to ink.

17] Do you do doujinshi or original manga?
Can't say so

18] Do you like doujinshi? Is it fun making it?
I don't think I've read too much of it to form an opinion

19] Ever submitted anything to a magazine?
Nintendo Power Envelope Art

20] Did it get published?
Not sure, it was a bit close to the end of my subscription

21] Who are your favorite artists?
Samwise and Twincruiser are up there, but I have a lot to pick from.

22] What's your favourite Anime/Manga?
Tenkuu no Escaflowne

23] Favourite Character?
Depends on what category you're looking for (anime, anything, etc)

24] Any artists that you'd like to draw like?
Many.

25] Do you buy books a lot?
Yeah - I'm a reader.

26] Did you ever buy a book to inspire you to draw?
Yup

27] Any video games you enjoy?
Most of them.

28] Any favourite characters from video games?
Gotta love the Links, but there are way too many to name

29] Do you have a favourite writer?
Eiji Yoshikawa

30] Any books you really enjoy?
Musashi, Tom Clancy's, Star Wars

31] Do you write fanfics?
No

32] Any music that you often listen to while drawing?
Tons of it

33] Any recommended songs?
Depends on the day/mood. "At the Beginning" by Donna Lewis/Richard Marx is currently playing, so I'll say that. And of course, Devils Never Cry by Shawn McPherson

34] Any websites that you totally admire?
Yeah

35] Do you have any sites you want to go everyday?
Several (Polykarbon, Penny Arcade, DA, Pointless Waste of Time, etc)

36] What is your dream site like?
Good looking, lots of my art, lots of fans drooling.

37] Do you like your own art?
Half of the time.

38] What do you enjoy watching on TV?
I have a few favorites, but Smallville is currently the king of them all.

39] Favourite celebrity?
Never really thought about it, nor do I care to put too much into it now.

40] Favourite color?
Green
Funny how often I seem to forget that. The very reason I haven’t had any new art up (95% of the ones I had been uploading are several months old by now) is because for a while I had forgotten about several things, and as a result I was just never happy with the art I was creating as of late. Essentially it felt like a long artist’s block. Thankfully I stumbled upon that quote by mere chance, and it reminded me what I needed to find. It seems to be doing the trick, and my old ways are working even better alongside what I learned during its absence.

Plus I’m not only relearning how to draw, but thanks to school I’m being reminded of why I love to draw. It seems every hour spent there strengthens my inspiration to draw, and now that I’m again liking what I draw there should be more art flowing in soon (especially with classes like Life Drawing, Introduction to classical Animation, Drawing for Animation Workshop, etc).
I expect that even by next Friday my educational version of XSI/Softimage might arrive, so soon I’ll be entering the world of 3D as well.
