As part of an effort to be more productive, I have made steps to get my freelance business (Pro Vision Media) off the ground again. so far so good; the website is up and running, the showreel is done, and I should be getting my hands on a new HD video camera soon: The Panasonic HVX-202, which can do full 1080P! *drool*

I guess once I have that all sorted I will finally be able to get more projects underway, as I have been penning out so many ideas over the past few months, but did not have all the gear I wanted to shoot them. So hopefully soon there will be a burst of films coming, including a project which relates to me recent fire tests!

Speaking of which, if there are any script writers out there who would love to have their ideas / short films shot and made into a film please feel free to send them to me and we can have a chat! It's a great opportunity for the writers to see one of their ideas come to life, and a great chance for me to develop further and find new challenges!

Anyway, that's all for now. You can watch the showreel by clicking on the thumb below:

-Cub. =o)

Fire and flames, and a whole lot of testing...

Good news is, things are finally in motion with a couple of new projects. It's a flame animation test, done entirely on the computer using 3D Studio Max. It is part of an upcoming project and was testing the fire for various effects, such as explosions, flares and other forms of pseudo-realistic pyrotechnics!!

I was up till 8am one morning rendering a few of these and caught the most amazing sunrise from the window... will post pics tomorrow.

In the meantime, there is nothing much else to report.
A filmmakers (fingers crossed) blog...

Ahoy all of those who are interested in my film's progress!

Well, just to give you a brief background on what it actually is:

Last year was the final year of my 3 year University course in Media Arts and Production... which was pretty much, for me at least, film and media related. And so, for my final project (and along with about 20 others) I decided to make a short film. The film is a remake of an Edgar Allan Poe short story titled "The Masque of the Read Death" which for those of you who have not read it, details the story of a Prince who, during the bubonic plague summons those closest to him to join him in his castle, sealed off from the outside world, thus escaping death. But under the premise that not even the rich are free from death, during a Masquerade ball within the castle's confines death attends as a guest at midnight... the rest is pretty cool!

I had completed a draft version for my Uni assessment back in November 2006... and despite being a draft it has complete sound design and music.

However, after the UTS draft version screened back in November 2006, I have been trying to put in motion a more thorough final version of the film to make it “festival ready”. But both fortunately, and unfortunately at the same time, my post production crew who helped me churn out the UTS draft have moved onto bigger and better projects.

And so I had to spend a bit of time resourcing a new post production crew. I am now happy to report that thanks to a workmate who came on board to handle the editing and post-production effects we have finally finished our final cut of the film!! He has done an amazing job, and I can’t think him enough for his dedication to the project.

Now all that is left to do are five stages, which will be completed at the same time by 5 different parties:

Sound design, Music, Rotoscoping, Credits and a final colour grade adjustment.

Sound design:

This is a re-hash of the sound design to match up with the changes in the edit. This process should not take as long as it originally did, but we are slightly delayed after the Hard Disk that contained our original Pro Tools project failed and we must start again. The good news is a lot of our original audio mixdown files are still in around, so we can work off them.

Music:

Our composer, who is a professional film and television composer; Matt Heider in Salt Lake City, Utah now has a copy of the final cut, and will be re-synching his music to match the new edit… once again, the music is already there so it is just a matter of adjusting the timings.

Rotoscoping:

Hopefully the person I have in mind for the job has some time to dedicate to the project so that we can start removing bits and pieces from shots that should not be there.

Credits:

An old schoolmate will be tackling the remake of the beginning and end credits. Should be fun to see the end result and what he comes up with!

Final Colour Adjustment

Obviously, we need to make sure nothing dropped out of broadcast boundaries and that everything is as pretty as it should be, colour wise!

Because these five stages are happening at the same time, it should not take a terribly long time to do. I have been itching to screen the final version of the film for ages now, and officially thank everyone who was involved with the project for their dedication and patience during the film’s production.

You may see some images from the film in my Gallery if you like... they are the ones that are about death hehe.

Anyway, fingers crossed it won't be too long now... I can't wait to see if I can submit it into Deviant Film!!

I don't get it...

Well, this is kind of what you would call a rant, but not really. I guess it depends on how you look at it.

I don't understand (and maybe some folks here can clarify this for me?) why there is such a rift between talented artists a popular artists on DA? Now, a lot of the time popular artists are not even very talented , and by that same token many of the talented artists are not popular enough (or at least, not enough as they should be ).

Now I am not going to mention any artists here (that should not be a popular as they are) because that would be just plain rude... but often I visit artist’s profiles and their gallery is not very inspiring at all... and yet you see their images on the popular sections of DA all the bloody time? So I take a look at the profiles to make sure there is nothing I missed (just in case there were some hidden brilliant works of art in there that somehow warranted their popularity)... but alas, there is not. Just a whole bunch of messages from people (that resemble a flock of sheep) leaving messages like "OMG I love your gallery... and you're so cute!" as if the cuteness of the artist somehow makes them all of a sudden much better at what they do...Meh! ...But even the ones that are not so cute still get hundreds of daily visits on works of art that could, quite frankly, be whipped up by a 12 year old ...The reason why I say that age is because I know a few people already on DA who are making greater achievements, and who are not too much older!).

Now, this is not about me complaining about a personal vendetta against more popular artists versus myself... because I am very new to the game, and let’s face it, there is a lot of room for improvement on my part. It's more like a cry out for the attention some of my fellow friends and DA-ers deserve.

And so in an attempt to give these people more recognition I have listed some friends here that you MUST visit!
So listen up! Now these are four artists who I myself watch and adore their work ... now don't get me wrong, they are more popular than me anyway... but I feel that compared to a lot of other folk who get hundreds of hits a day, the work from these artists above is nothing short of spectacular, so please drop them a visit... or I will bitch slap you from now until the end of time! <img src="http://...

Well I got my battery for the camera the day after getting the camera back so it was not that bad. I was expecting a longer wait, but it looks like they felt bad about making a second mistake.

I have not been taking as many happy snaps as I would've liked now that its back, but I still have a few older ones I would like to submit first, which should hopefully be within the next few days.

Spent most of the weekend filming a friends birthday video. It's a tradition in our group to make a 20 or so minute video for a persons birthday to screen at the party, and this usually involves various skits and send-ups making fun of the person. This time we decided to do a Naked Gun style send up to begin with the whole crazy police car intro, and then do our own little Law and Order skit (as you can tell our friend has had a few law-based run-ins and we like to remind him of it! haha). And we also did a rap music video, which has me and a few friends making a fool out of ourselves in the city. Can wait to begin editing! ...And I might YouTube it once it is done.

I am currently growing my hair long in preparation for a cosplay at the Animania festival here in Sydney in September. I plan on going a Kiriyama from Battle Royale, so I am thinking I will need to also dye my hair orange/brown and get some white contact lenses. That should be fun! I will definitely post pics of the costume when it is done... but as I said the festival is not until September. Yay, finally found a local Anime/Manga festival!

Sometimes you kick, sometimes you get kicked.

Well, after 3 weeks of being without my precious IXUS 850IS they return it... but it wasn't without difficulty. My friend (who works for the company) helped sort out the replacement of my camera (remember the one that had a few dead pixels on the CCD that would show up in all the images? ). Anyway, after giving it to them and asking for a replacement, they give it back to her 2 weeks later fixed, not replaced. My friend (Julia) being the wonderfully to the point and assertive person she is (a respectable quality I might add ) told them, in a nice way "No thanks, we did not want it fixed, we wanted a replacement"... and rightfully so. Because when you start opening up a camera and screwing around with the CCD you lose a little bit of something, no matter what anyone says.

Anyway, they comply, take it away and another week later they supply me with a nice shiny new replacement. I was excited because I really wanted to get back into taking photos as soon as possible.

BUT...

This time they decided to give me one without a battery... it was left out of the box!

Well done Canon, so I am supposed to magically power the camera with my own sense of well being? ...I don't think so.

So now I have to wait some more for a battery! *sigh*

Signing off.

It never ceases to amaze me how so many people here in DA are so good at what they do!

For a long time I was always self-conscious about showing my work here, because DA is both an amazing yet depressing place at the same time. Amazing in the sense that, you get to see so many wonderful works from such talented people... depressing because you soon realize you are a small fish in a VERY big pond.

I look at some of the artists here (particularly photographers, because that is what I am aiming to become known for here) and see their vast galleries full of wonderful images, thousands of visits, and comments... they are so popular! But I don't say that with resentment, but with respect. While it is depressing to look back at your own gallery and find tumbleweed blowing past, I never stop aiming to become like these talented people. They are people to look up to.

I hope that one day my works will reach audiences, so I guess I have to keep going. I don't think I would be able to without the kind comments from the people who have visited my gallery so far... so many thanks to all of you (you know who you are).

(Hmmm... I wonder if I posed as a pretty girl I could get more hits?? )

Well, seeing as this is my first journal entry, I thought I might give you a short brief on what I like to do, and what I use:

I like:
Photography mainly. However, I also do a bit of computer generated imagery... although I have no uploaded any of those here... not until I actually produce something I really like.

Style?:
Well, I like playing with colours and lighting. I like contrasting between colours and black & white in my images, and work with a lot of emotive portraits of people. If find that; because I cannot really afford a very high-end camera I like to emphasis expression, framing and lighting so that it gives me quite a bit to work with already. A lot of the time I am making adjustments to my photos in Photoshop CS2 to bring them to life.

My equipment:
The photos in my gallery were taken with one of three cameras:

Sony Mavica CD – This was the first camera I did serious photography with... it was not very high end, and I used to borrow it from my school, but it took some wonderful shots and held amazing clarity and maintained nice depth of field for a lower end camera... my works: 'Cold Spring', 'Bullied' and 'Paris' were all done using this camera. But now it is long gone.

Konica Minolta Dimage X50 – This was my first camera which I actually owned... cost quite a bit at the time, but once again, nothing super special. 5mp... it did the job when the scenes were lit well, but stryggled a bit in low light, and did not hold a very good DOF. You really had to dissect the settings to bring the best out of the camera. I sometimes use this one as a spare.

Canon IXUS 850IS – My new toy. Takes great photos and I love the macro on this model. the colour is very good (even though I usually take it out in Photoshop).

Although, my IXUS is currently away being replaced... turns out after a few days of photography I noticed a few dead pixels on the CCD At first I thought it was just the display (which I could live with) but the dead pixels were showing up on the images too. But they agreed to replace it completely with no charge, which is good.

Well that's pretty much all I have to say for my first journal entry. To everyone who is visiting my gallery, thank you!!! And please drop me a line if you like my work!

Take care!
